Tiger Woods had high hopes for his first event following disappointing finishes at the Farmers Insurance Open and Dubai Desert Traditional.

If these hopes are to be fulfilled they'll be despite his first spherical performance and not due to it.

Woods made birdie on the final to save lots of what would have been a not-good first spherical 72 and turn it right into a not-too-terrible first-round seventy one (1 over for the match).

Here's a take a look at his up-and-down scorecard (he began on the again nine with eight straight pars):

I say "not awful" as a result of it usually does not take an incredible score to par to win on the robust PGA National. The last seven successful scores: 9 underneath, 12 below, 9 under, thirteen beneath, 9 beneath, 6 below, and 5 below.

Plus Woods shot a 62 on Sunday at this observe back in 2012 when Rory McIlroy gained so we know he's a minimum of able to some magic.

Tiger fans may take solace on this:

Still, there's work to be executed for the world No. 1 and he'll have to begin with a decidedly better second spherical on Friday.

Woods didn't say much after his spherical as he is often wont to do after middling performances like the one he gave on Thursday.

He did tell Golf Channel he did not have it on a day when there have been scores to be posted (early leaders were at 5 beneath).

"I did not make a lot," said Woods. "The first 4 holes out of the gate I had 4 attractiveness, didn't make any of them. I didn't hit the ball very effectively on the back 9. I've to start placing higher."

Woods did have chances on his first 9 (the back 9 on the course) and some birdies littered in would have really buoyed his round. But like he said, he couldn't get it to fall within the cup.

As long as he keeps hitting fairways and greens (he was 67 p.c on greens in regulation) I'm fairly confident the putting stroke will come.

I believe he's, too.

"I could have got a couple a lot more out of it. "

A couple more that Tiger Woods might need come Saturday and Sunday in the Dubai Desert Classic.

Woods shot a just-fine 68 (good for T10 after round one) in his first look since that ghastly seventy nine at Torrey Pines last Sunday however it came regardless of only striking seven associated with 14 fairways and ten of eighteen greens in regulation.

The fairways he did hit were unable exactly in ideal places, either. On the par-5 550-yard 13th opening, a gap easily obtainable in two, Woods chose to hit a 3-wood from the tee while playing partners Rory McIlroy and Stephen Gallacher each hit drives 90 yards past your pet.

Forest is fulfilling the narrative many folks have built regarding him — that he aren't hit a driver, a minimum of with any confidence.

If you read between the lines Woods made a Hank Haney reference after his round regarding his driver.

"It's my older pattern once again. With the last coach it was a push prevent. We tried to get out of might go to a cut [a ball that curves from left to right]. It's tougher to aim [more to the] correct knowing that I have got to cut it. "

Nevertheless, Woods only needed 25 (! ) putts for the whole round sought out in 32 and appeared poised for a crazy low number yet nine pars on the back again left your pet at 4-under for the tournament, five back of McIlroy.

"We all performed well, inch said McIlroy to ESPN, "Tiger took a little time get started, but this individual managed their game really well the first nine holes plus started striking the ball better on the back. "

Woods did not go that will far but he has been still pleased.

"I'm going to focus on a couple of things every now and then, but Personally i think like it was a good day, " mentioned Woods. "I could have got a couple a lot more out of it, just by making a couple of putts from about ten feet or so. I hit a lot of great putts, that was nice. A week ago I did not do it. It was nice to really play properly again. inch

Here is a look at Woods' scorecard (note his 2-under performance within the par-5s : birdies upon No . 13 and No. 18 – after not creating a birdie last week in 12 opportunities):

There's nevertheless a lot of work to be finished Woods — since 2000 the champion has obtained 17 below or better – but he saved the emotion on Thursday night that their 79 a week ago at Torrey is an outlier.

With the way he or she and McIlroy both performed Thursday We wouldn't end up being surprised to find out them paired for all 4 rounds — the first 2 as a draw and the last two since the leaders of the tournament.

Woods summed up his day the way days along with bogey-free 68s in competition play ought to be summed upward, for the world's No . one player or anyone.

"Overall it was a pretty great score. inch

World Challenge: Tiger has 10 birdies, shoots 62 for 2-shot lead

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP)

Tiger Woods did not like the way he warmed up on the vary. What he produced on the golf course Friday left him with no complaints.

TIGER WOODS

ALL TIGER, ON A REGULAR BASIS

Woods had a birdie putt on every hole and made 10 of them for a ten-under sixty two, tying his course record at Sherwood Nation Club and giving the tournament host a two-shot lead over Zach Johnson going into the weekend at the World Problem.

“It was good immediately,” Woods said with a broad smile, maybe as a result of there was little else to say.

“It was a clinic,” said Graeme McDowell, the defending champion who performed alongside Woods within the second spherical and had a 67.

Woods was at eleven-below 133 and might be paired in the last group Saturday with Johnson, who missed a couple of good birdie possibilities on the again nine however still managed a sixty eight. Johnson is a two-time runner-up on the World Challenge, both instances to Woods.

Matt Kuchar had a sixty eight and was three shots behind, and nobody else was nearer than five shots. What could challenge Woods, together with everybody else, is a forecast of rain after which wind for the ultimate two days.

Woods didn’t be ok with his swing till a tee shot to fifteen toes on the par-3 third hole, and while he needed to accept par, he a minimum of preferred the way in which the ball left his club.

“It was the first swing I feel I made, even throughout warm-up, that felt actually good,” Woods stated. “And I attempted to keep that feeling the remainder of the day, and I did. I hit lots of good photographs after that.”

Accumulating trophies is a behavior of

Tiger Woods

.

It was the tenth time Woods has shot 62 or lower in a tournament. He went on to win six of these events. The exceptions were the 1999 Byron Nelson Classic (61 within the first round), the 2005 Buick Open (61 within the second spherical) and the 2012 Honda Classic (62 in the closing round).

This is his remaining event of the yr, although Woods has been around lengthy enough to keep it in perspective.

“Two extra rounds,” he stated.

No one is able to concede this match to Woods, apart from these at the far end of this 18-man area. Hunter Mahan had an eighty, Dustin Johnson had a 79 and Rory McIlroy, coming off a win at the Australian Open, had a seventy seven.

“Wonderful what Tiger did out there. It’s just a few incredible golf,” Kuchar stated. “I kind of felt sorry for Graeme McDowell. I saw he posted a 5-below-par spherical, and it will need to have felt like it was 2 or 3 over. It’s tough if you’re paired with a guy like that. It makes you’re feeling such as you’re not doing much. But the remainder of us simply go about our enterprise.”

Even after watching what he felt like was an exhibition – Woods’ golf, not the tournament – McDowell figured he might still defend his title if he might nail down the speed of the greens, that are running on the quick side.

That is what set Woods apart on one other chilly day at Sherwood. Not solely did he make the putts, he not often was in a position the place he needed to stress over par. The lone exception came on the par-3 12th, when Woods was in such a precarious spot above the opening that he had no intention of trying to make birdie. He would have needed to begin the ball excessive on a ridge to get it to roll near the outlet, and that may imply more velocity going by. So he aimed for the low facet and made the ten-foot par putt coming again.

Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn made headlines in March once they introduced they have been a couple.

See how love bloomed

.

“I do not think I’ve seen them fairly this quick unless we get Santa Ana’s blowing when it’s dry,” Woods said. “I imply, that is the final event of the 12 months for a lot of us. I might think they’d make it a bit easier on us. However they gave it to us pretty good the final couple days. You miss the ball within the mistaken spots, you make bogeys.”

Woods never went more than two holes without a birdie. One of the few times he was above the outlet, Woods hit his putt on a perfect line with the fitting tempo and dipped his knees when it dropped in the correct side of the cup.

At the same time as he dropped further behind, McDowell could not assist however admire a flawless round of golf.

“I loved that,” he mentioned. “It was cool to see that type of golf. He was underneath control. He hit it down the center of each fairway. He did not have that form of violence along with his pace by the ball.”

Woods mentioned he was much like the sixty one he shot this summer at Firestone, the place he went on to win by seven pictures.

“I believe Firestone is clearly a much more difficult golf course than Sherwood,” Woods said. “But as far as quality ball-hanging, I hit it equally pretty much as good at the moment, if not even better.”

Bills vs. Browns

bills

Please No More Infractions Josh Gordon (USAT)

This week’s Thursday evening contest wasn’t horrible for a change but potential severe accidents to both beginning quarterbacks cast a pall over an otherwise entertaining sport. The 37-24 victory gave the Browns a three-2 record that places them in sole possession of first place in an AFC North division that appeared to be one of the competitive coming into 2013. Maybe the Trent Richardson trade wasn’t a white flag in any case. The win snapped Cleveland’s NFL-lengthy 25-sport losing streak in games they trailed by eight+ factors. Credit must be given to the Browns’ aggressiveness late, as the crew threw the ball downfield on 3rd-and-18 with 5:08 left in the fourth quarter at their own 35-yard line up three points, choosing up the first down within the process. Furthermore, the Browns remained on the attack, throwing but again on the following first down (leading to a 16-yard achieve). This all appears so apparent, but so many groups would have settled for a run after which punted in this scenario. As a substitute, the drive led to a field goal, putting them up two scores as an alternative of one.

Brian Hoyer’s stats haven’t jumped off the web page, however on the subject of pocket awareness and athleticism, his injury that sure seems to be season ending ought to hurt the Browns. In fantasy terms, I first assumed it would be a blow to Jordan Cameron, who’s caught four of his 5 touchdowns this season over the 2 video games in which Hoyer began. However, the breakout tight finish has averaged eleven.5 targets and seventy eight.5 yards with Hoyer at the helm compared to 10.0 targets and one hundred and one.5 yards with Weeden. Thursday night was easily Cameron’s worst recreation of the season, and Weeden took over virtually immediately, however he was coming off an injury and had literally seen zero observe reps leading up to the contest, so I think it’s protected to jot down this one off. The touchdown manufacturing may be one thing that suffers (Weeden can wing it downfield, however he lacks accuracy and touch, evident by him overthrowing Cameron ultimately zone Thursday), but I still would have a hard time not ranking Cameron because the No. 2 fantasy tight finish proper now (possibly in two weeks it’s Rob Gronkowski, however the point stays: Cameron ought to proceed to be a beast even with the QB change).

To place it mildly, Willis McGahee appeared gradual and just like the announcers stored saying, the third-oldest working back within the NFL. He merely wasn’t quick sufficient to hit the holes. That said, he should only be higher the more in shape and conversant in his new group’s system he will get transferring forward. Extra importantly, McGahee seems like a transparent workhorse, a dying breed in the NFL nowadays. Even if it comes with an ugly YPC, on this panorama, McGahee would possibly very properly be a prime-20/25 fantasy back from right here on out thanks merely to attrition. He’s a must personal.

C.J. Spiller’s fantasy evening was salvaged solely by his fifty four-yard touchdown run, as he clearly wasn’t near one hundred pc. Fortunately, he now will get 10 days to get better. Fred Jackson (the oldest RB in the league) continues to defy my expectations, totaling ninety three yards and two touchdowns towards a troublesome Browns run protection…Kiko Alonso, who entered tied for the NFL-lead with four interceptions as a linebacker who’s a rookie (to place this in perspective, the Steelers and Raiders have but to record a single pick this season), had one other spectacular effort, recording 12 tackles and acting as a serious disruption to Cleveland’s offense. He’s easily been the most spectacular rookie on defense to date in 2013…Travis Benjamin was completely a difference maker on this recreation.

E.J. Manuel’s injury didn’t look as unhealthy as Hoyer’s at the time (but who is aware of?), but the rookie may have simply ran out of bounds on the play, instead incurring a direct hit to his knee. Let’s hope he’s OK, because Jeff Tuel was brutal, to put it mildly. He went eight-for-20 whereas getting 4.zero YPA. In fact, throughout 27 plays after Tuel took over, the Bills produced seventy six yards. That’s not best…As if the QB accidents weren’t unhealthy enough, robust break for Stevie Johnson homeowners too. His absence led to Robert Woods seeing 13 targets, but that also unfortunately led to Joe Haden switching over to him, leading to simply 5 catches for sixty four yards. Still, Woods has now seen a whopping 31 targets over the past three video games, and he appears lots competent. Assuming Manuel returns, the rookie wideout can absolutely be fantasy related from here on out…Josh Gordon dropped what would have easily been a 90-yard touchdown during the first drive, but he still settled for 86 receiving yards and a highlight worthy TD catch. Brandon Weeden has loads of faults, however an unwillingness to throw downfield isn’t one in all them, which should benefit Gordon, as all seven of his profession TD receptions have come from 20+ yards out. Gordon should be treated as a high-15 fantasy huge receiver proper now.

Tiger Woods injured again…this time, by hotel bed

Tiger Woods enters this weekend’s Barclays, the initial occasion of this year’s FedEx Cup, as the favourite to win the entire deal as soon as again. And, since it is not a major, he’s probably going to throttle your entire subject and stroll away with another two-comma check.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”24″]

But it will not be easy, no. Woods has taken his first lumps this playoff season before swinging a single competitive membership. The perpetrator? A delicate resort bed.

Woods skipped drives and approaches on the back 9 of a Wednesday professional-am, saying that he’d suffered the damage the night before. And, sure, somebody asked Woods if he’d have a brand new bed, and Woods simply smiled and answered, “We’ll have something.”

This is the most recent in a spread of injuries that have beset Woods this year, although this seems relatively minor compared to the elbow and back problems that gave him difficulty throughout a lot of the summer season. Woods, naturally, says he’s high-quality now.

Now, earlier than you go make some joke about golfers not being athletes because they can’t even beat up a mushy mattress, needless to say back and neck injuries suck, and the back and neck are form of necessary in golfing situations.

The Barclays begins Thursday, and the FedEx Cup playoffs run until the late-September Tour Championship finale at East Lake in Atlanta.

Tiger Woods continues his major championship struggles at the PGA

Tiger Woods — Getty Images On Sunday at the PGA Championship, everybody knew that Tiger Woods wouldn’t be winning his 15th major championship. Coming in off certainly one of his best performances since he was snagging majors 5 years ago, Woods was the new story and the apparent choose, however his four days at Oak Hill were a reminder that despite how he dominates the common PGA Tour occasions all season, it’s the majors that proceed to flummox the No. 1 participant on the earth.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”24″]

Woods shot a spherical of even-par 70 on Sunday, never giving up despite a bogey-double bogey finish to his entrance 9 and the truth that when that driver comes out of the bag, our guess is pretty much as good as his to where it can find yourself.

Tiger shot a again 9 32, never giving up and grinding as onerous as he may, particularly over the past two holes when he could not be extra out of position. Woods grabbed his again after a tee shot on the par-5 thirteenth, but continued to go after tee photographs and attempt to dig irons out of the rough, a testomony to only how much this man cares about all the time taking pictures one shot higher if potential.

But the actual story right here is not his play at Oak Hill, however his play in any respect the majors. Last month I wrote a piece defending Tiger’s play, stating that a T-6 at a serious is a fairly incredible accomplishment considering he had has B sport at Muirfield. This week isn’t as defensible. Woods simply ought to have played better on the PGA, coming in off a giant win at Firestone by which it seemed all elements of his game had been clicking.

This is not a swing drawback or a membership problem, it is all mental. The area between Tiger’s ears that used to be so invincible seems to get rattled when it is main championship week, and no matter if the course is dry and quick or delicate and moist or tree lined or wind-swept, it is the identical story for the man with 14 majors.

Now comes a long offseason of refocusing on these four weeks each year that really matter to Tiger’s legacy. He could win each PGA Tour occasion subsequent season, an accomplishment that solely Woods is capable of doing, and it would not matter to most critics. It’s the majors and the majors alone for Tiger, and for some cause his recreation and his thoughts aren’t sharp enough to compete all 4 days at these occasions.

Tiger said before the week that even with no win at Oak Hill he would contemplate 2013 a profitable season. I tend to agree with the man that has five PGA Tour wins this season, but seven months is a very long time to attend and take into consideration what exactly happens when he is not just enjoying the field, but enjoying history.

Tiger Woods posts another disappointing round at a major championship

There was outdated main championship Tiger Woods and present major championship Tiger Woods, and while lots thought the outdated guy would show up after that performance final week at Firestone, it has been the present Tiger that’s struggled at Oak Hill.

Woods shot a spherical of even-par 70, not dangerous if Oak Hill had played the way in which most anticipated this week but not good contemplating how everyone else is attacking this PGA Championship.

While Jason Dufner, Webb Simpson and Okay.J. Choi weren’t only chasing the course report but major championship historical past on Friday, Woods was combating the green speeds and the distances together with his irons, dropping a number of golf equipment after impact in disgust.

He sits 10 photographs again of Dufner with 36 holes to go, an element by name only.

The putter that Tiger Woods had final week at Firestone, and for a lot of the non-major season, went missing, and it actually showed on the again 9 on Friday. Woods drove the par-4 14th but three-putted for a disappointing par. After picking up a birdie on the next gap it was back to the balky putter, as Tiger three-putted the 16th for a bogey to give the shot he simply picked up right back.

On a day when it seemed everyone was going low, Woods could not get a single bit of momentum on his facet. After his bogey on 16, Woods buried a fantastic birdie putt on the seventeenth to get again to even par for the event, however again it was a foul swing on the 18th tee that compelled Woods to simply pitch out and after a weak wedge shot could not convert the prolonged par putt, settling for a closing bogey.

Now comes the hard part for Tiger. In some way the No. 1 player on this planet needs to figure out a method to block out the truth that he is enjoying in a serious championship and strategy Saturday like it’s Bay Hill, or Sawgrass, or Torrey Pines or Firestone. During his five wins this 12 months on the PGA Tour the man with 14 major wins carried himself like a person that already knew what the longer term held, walking with his chin up and a strut that said this tournament was his.

At the majors it has been a distinct Tiger, enjoying conservatively to a fault and being befuddled on the greens.

Tiger has two more rounds left in 2013 that actually, truly matter to his career. Hopefully he can block out all the pieces that clouds his mind at the major championships and keep in mind that he is still the most effective on the earth, and coming from behind to win a significant championship is one thing he’s very a lot able to doing.

If he does not, it is going to be a protracted offseason for a man with five PGA Tour wins answering questions about the place he leaves his golf recreation throughout the four most vital weeks of the PGA Tour season.

Phil Mickelson says Tiger Woods has brought the best out in his game the last few years

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson — Getty Images

This Tuesday at Oak Hill meant press convention day, and a long record of one of the best on this planet took to the rostrum on the PGA Championship to talk about the expectations this week and just about anything else within the recreation of golf.

Tiger Woods was there, but so was British Open champion Phil Mickelson, long the No. 2 to Tiger main the cost.

Mickelson is coming off among the finest golf of his profession in Scotland, successful each the Scottish Open and the Claret Jug at Muirfield, and was asked about what Tiger does for Mickelson’s sport and career.

“… Definitely my document doesn’t stand up to what (Tiger’s) done within the sport. It is simply unimaginable what he’s accomplished with the number of wins, the variety of majors and the consistency that he’s shown all through his profession. But within the final 5 or 6 years, I’ve had some fairly good success head‑to‑head and I feel like he brings out the very best golf in me. He’s an excellent motivator for me. He is helped me work arduous. He is helped me put forth the hassle to try to compete on the highest stage 12 months‑in and yr‑out, and I’ve beloved competing in opposition to him. He’s actually brought the best out of me, particularly after we’ve been paired collectively, and I hope that we are able to play together for a lot of more years.”

These comments from Phil should not be that stunning.

Before Tiger Woods, Phil was battling a lot of guys, glad to be the most gifted within the group that would often snag a win or compete in a serious championship. In the final six years Mickelson has grow to be a drive, successful two majors and being a consider numerous others, but it’s his battles in opposition to Tiger which have improved.

In the outdated days Phil appeared afraid of the drive that’s Tiger. Now at the youthful age of 43, Mickelson looks like would take pleasure in nothing greater than getting Tiger within the final group of this week’s PGA Championship and hope to do what he did to Woods at Pebble Seaside a yr in the past.

I know a few million other those who wouldn’t thoughts seeing those two bring within the pins on Sunday at Oak Hill.

Tiger Woods continues to roll at Firestone

Tiger Woods — Getty Images It seems you’ve read, and I’ve written, this story before. Tiger Woods, with a big lead, cruising to a victory at Firestone Country Club even with a whole round left to play.

Saturday was simply the third spherical of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, but with a seven-shot lead on a golf course that they could rename Tiger’s World when his profession is over, the engraver had probably already pressed his name into the trophy and took the weekend off.

Woods posted a 3rd spherical 68, ok to take care of a seven-shot lead with 18 holes to play.

They say one of the hardest issues for a professional to do is comply with up a ridiculously low spherical with another great round, however on this golf course he did not must go that low to take care of his huge lead over the rest of the field.

Sunday can be a light stroll for the No. 1 golfer on the earth. Positive, he will say after the third round that this tournament “isn’t over but” and there “is still one spherical to go” however anybody that has seen or watched Tiger in his profession knows that this would be the golf equal of the final day of the Tour de France, a spherical of golf that is all but conceded to the person with the Swoosh on his cap.

Tiger had some loose swings on Saturday. He hit some errant iron photographs and drives that missed right, but the guy is simply on a unique stage proper now when it comes to scrambling. His birdie on No. 13 was nice, but simply take a look at how he closed out his spherical on No. 18, punching a shot out of the rough to the front of the inexperienced after which pitching the ball to a couple of feet to avoid wasting par.

The story now’s simply how much will Tiger win by. Sunday will mark eight occasions that Woods has left Firestone with the hardware and it is going to be his 18th World Golf Championships win (just one participant, Geoff Ogilvy, even has three WGC wins).

If nothing else, this week has shown us that when Tiger Woods is clicking, he is still as dominant over the remainder of the golfing world as he was when he was picking up major wins by the handful.

Why Tiger Woods deserves a bit more credit

Tiger Woods — Getty Images On Sunday at Muirfield, Tiger Woods was once again in the hunt of a major championship. A three-putt on his first hole followed by another on the sixth put him a tough spot, and despite some birdies on the back nine it was another come from behind effort that came up short. It’s now been 17 majors that Tiger has played without a win, the longest stretch of his career, and the questions continue to come about what exactly is wrong with Tiger Woods?

Here is a spoiler for you all; nothing is wrong. This is golf, a game that embarrassed the best in the world at times, and given us plenty of head-scratching moments. It’s a game that doomed the Shark on a Sunday at Augusta, seen Phil Mickelson blow a drive 40 yards left on the last hole to lose the U.S. Open, and big name after big name come up just short when they had one hand on the trophy. For Tiger, it’s been five years of bad weeks or tough breaks (remember the flagstick at the Masters?!) or running into a player that is simply golfing his ball better than Tiger, and while it seems strange that Tiger is majorless since ’08, it isn’t fair to bash him for it.

Fred Couples has one major win. So does Tom Kite, Adam Scott, David Duval and Mark Calcavecchia. Tiger has 14, second only to one man, and despite his continued pursuit of a record most thought was unattainable, we scratch our heads and blow Woods off because he finished sixth and not first.

There is a misnomer around these parts that I’m a huge Tiger fan, that I love the guy and gush about his play and want him to win every golf tournament. That is simply not true. I like Tiger the same way I like any athlete that continues to make the sport I love look easy. It isn’t a love for the man, it’s a love for his talent. His run between 2000-’02 was one of the most fun things I’ve ever watched simply because I love golf and I want to be perfect at the sport and for two years a man was doing exactly that. It wasn’t golf, it was art.

Now we sit around and bash the guy when he doesn’t win a major. I’ve heard people say he choked on Sunday at Muirfield, which is ridiculous. Tiger didn’t choke, he just didn’t play well. He didn’t have a lead with two holes to go and finish bogey-bogey, or miss a two-footer on the final hole for the win, he just couldn’t get anything going all weekend just like nearly the entire rest of the field. For Tiger, the problem is more ours than it is his. We look at a man and see a kid, a youngster that ripped major win after major win like he was playing for the Dobson Ranch club championship. Tiger is now 37, with multiple injuries and a lot of scar tissue from life, some deserving and some not. He is the most famous athlete in the world and the one golfer that can move the needle. When he plays bad most of us turn off our television, rolling our eyes at names like Justin Rose and Charl Schwartzel because “they aren’t Tiger Woods.”

This year alone Tiger has finished T-4 at the Masters and T-6 at the British Open. Only Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson and Jason Day have finished in the top-six at two majors in 2013, but that doesn’t satisfy us with Tiger, it frustrates us. We get mad at the guy for not being better, despite his ability to almost always be in the hunt at a major championship.

Tiger Woods has one goal in mind, and that is winning major championships and getting to 19 and passing a number we never thought was possible until he came on the scene in 1997 and blew away the field at Augusta National. That is the one and only motivation for Tiger right now. But he still tees it up at regular PGA Tour events and wins a lot of them, even if nobody notices. This season alone Tiger has four PGA Tour wins, twice as many as anybody else on the planet, but that only holds us over for that Monday after he wins. The talk always circles back to if Tiger is “back” or if he can win the Masters or at Merion or at Muirfield and now the PGA.

We should be impressed by what Tiger keeps doing to the game, even if that means he goes another year without a major win. He will eventually get one, and when he does, the floodgates might open just like they did when he broke his PGA Tour winless streak last year at Bay Hill.

Tiger made himself a legend. Now we sit and wait for him to return to his rightful spot. Eventually his game will click on one of the four weeks it matters to us all and the trophy will be his and everything will be back to normal. For now, why don’t we just enjoy the fight he’s putting up and stop bashing the guy for continuing to put himself in a spot to win?

Another major, another miss for Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods. (Getty Images) Rooting for Tiger Woods in majors these days is like rooting against the sunset. You can hope and wish all you like that the sun will stay up for an extra hour or two, but every time — every single freaking time — it goes down exactly as it always has.

Tiger Woods is no longer a force in majors, and only those blinded by Nike’s Sunday red possibly think differently. Yes, he plays well enough to post multiple top-10 finishes. But he’s beyond “good job, good effort” accolades. When you’re chasing history, it’s win or nothing.

Woods remains, deservedly, the best player in the world. He’s won four times on Tour this year, effectively and decisively. But in majors? He’s a puppy, relatively speaking. You know the drill: he hasn’t won since the U.S. Open in 2008. He’s got injuries to his knee and leg and elbow and heart and soul and who knows what else and after awhile, it’s all just excuses. The guy’s good enough to win tournaments on Tour. The guy’s good enough to put himself within strokes of the lead at majors. But closing the deal? That, apparently, is beyond him now.

Here’s the really bad news: Woods’ propensity for spiraling in the weekend is getting worse. ESPN’s stats report that from 2005 to 2011, Woods was a combined 60 under in rounds three and four of majors. In the seven majors of 2012 and 2013, he’s +23. That’s an 83-shot swing. Consider, also, his last seven closing rounds in majors: 74, 73, 73, 72, 70, 74, 74. There’s absolutely no way to defend that, especially in light of the fact that Woods was, for a time, the greatest closer in golf history.

Woods remains stubbornly defiant. “I’m very pleased with the way I’m playing,” he said after the tournament, making the total number of people pleased with him total up to 1. “I’m right there. I hit a ton of good shots this week.” There’s something to admire about the go-down-guns-blazing approach, detached as it is from reality.

The sad thing is, there doesn’t appear to be anything truly wrong with Woods’ game. His iron play was almost flawless through the first three days of this week. He putted as well as anyone this week, and he’s putted better than most in the past. He’s learning to work his driver, or work around it, as he did this week. He still knows how to win.

That leads to an inescapable conclusion: come major weekends, the world’s greatest golfer is faltering between the ears. It’s the only variable, the only element that changes once the spotlight cranks up. And how exactly does one reframe one’s mindset, particularly if one happens to be famous for world-class mental toughness? That’s the challenge ahead of Woods.

There’s time, there’s time.. Woods has at least another 30 or so majors ahead of him while he’s in his competitive prime. But for a guy who’s spent most of his life defeating everyone around him, it’d be sadly appropriate if he turned out to be his own worst enemy.

Tiger Woods opens with impressive 2-under 69 despite nasty start at British Open

If Tiger Woods had drawn up a way to get off to a hot start, it probably didn’t involve having to re-tee on the first hole of the 2013 British Open.

Woods hit a pull-hook that ended up so far left of the first fairway that he was forced to hit a provisional, eventually taking an unplayable lie drop with his first ball and making a very good bogey. That was where the jitters seemed to end, and Woods put together one of the best afternoon rounds of anybody in the field, posting a 2-under 69 to land in the top-10 after the first round at Muirfield.

There were plenty of questions on how Woods would fare at Muirfield considering his recent injury and time away from the game after the U.S. Open, but despite a few bad swings off the tee, mostly with fairway woods, it was a businesslike round for Tiger, who flushed his irons all day long and made some very tricky putts look easy.

That said, he still had to deal with the beast that is Muirfield. On the par-4 14th hole, Tiger putted his ball off the back of the green, having to make a tricky six-footer for bogey to save himself from four-putting.

He hit 10 of 14 fairways on day one, never pulling out his new Nike Covert driver once, sticking to a game plan of iron after iron off the tee to try and keep the ball in play and in control.

Now comes what has to be said about the 2013 version of Tiger. We’ve seen him play well to start major championships in the last couple of years, especially at this tournament. A year ago at Lytham it was consecutive rounds of 67 to open his British campaign that got us all excited before struggling on the weekend, a common theme of late with Woods at the big four.

This was a solid opening round and exactly what he needed considering he was one of the afternoon guys that had to deal with a bit more wind on these firm and fast greens. Friday will give him a chance to attack Muirfield in the morning, but it will still be the weekend that we have to wait and see if Tiger can hold it together and step his game up a notch.

Tiger Woods plays practice round at Muirfield, says elbow feels fine

Tiger Woods — Getty Images On Sunday morning, Tiger Woods got his first look at Muirfield since tough weather pounded the 14-time Grand Slam champion back in 2002 as he posted a third round 81, his worst score ever as a professional, and said he’s looking forward to the third major of 2013.

Woods took some time off from golf after the U.S. Open to heal a strained elbow, but said on his website that everything feels good and he should be ready to try and win his fourth Claret Jug this coming week.

“I will be able to hit all the shots I need to hit. That’s why I took the time off, so it could heal, and I would feel comfortable playing again,” Woods said. “I’m still taking anti-inflammatory medication for my elbow and getting treatment, but the big thing at Muirfield Golf Club will be to avoid the rough.”

Woods played the back nine at Muirfield with Dustin Johnson and Jason Day on Sunday morning and said the tough track will play firm and fast, something he prefers in an Open Championship.

How fast is the course playing? Tiger was overheard saying he hit a 4-iron 285 yards on the eighth hole, meaning we could see a Hoylake approach from Woods if the weather holds.

Still, it’s good to see Tiger out at Muirfield hitting golf shots with an elbow that should hold up this week.
