Brown, SMU snubbed by NCAA tournament

UNIVERSITY PARK, Texas – Somewhat more than a thousand SMU followers, players, band members and cheerleaders and coach Larry Brown sat in Moody Coliseum in anticipation of the school's first NCAA appearance in additional than 20 years, solely to experience disappointment.

SMU's name by no means appeared on the NCAA bracket. As an alternative, the Mustangs have to be content with the No. 1 total seed in the faculty's first look within the NIT since 2000.

It turns out that the staff's solely three-sport dropping streak of the season got here on the incorrect time, because the Mustangs fell to Louisville and Memphis to finish the regular season after which misplaced to Houston within the first spherical of the American Athletic Convention tournament. Shedding to two of the league's worst teams in South Florida and Temple might not have helped, both. All of it was simply enough to keep the invitation from exhibiting up on the SMU campus, about 20 miles from where the Last 4 shall be performed in lower than a month at AT&T Stadium.

Moments after the broadcast was over, Brown took the microphone and addressed his workforce and people fans in attendance.

"I feel bad for our team and you followers," Brown said. "I feel like we allow you to all down."

That acquired an instantaneous response from the group, shouting: "No."

Brown, clearly disillusioned and admitting that he didn't know what to say, selected to deal with how his team can respond.

"When issues do not go precisely how you deliberate, you can both pack it in or you'll find a strategy to do higher," Brown said. "We have to use this as a technique to get better."

SMU finished the season 23-9 and had an RPI of fifty three coming into Sunday's games. It was a memorable season for the Mustangs, regardless of dropping three consecutive games to finish the regular season.

In chatting with the media afterward, Brown lamented among the shut calls SMU had over the course of the season.

"We might have overwhelmed Louisville at residence. We jumped on them, then obtained in foul hassle and acted foolish," Brown mentioned. "We did not play our greatest sport at Memphis, but we did not get blown out by both staff. I checked out our schedule; we did not get blown out by anyone.

A late-season swoon price SMU a trip to the NCAA tournament, however the Mustangs did earn the highest general seed in the NIT.

"We almost beat Virginia. We had possession down one. But when we didn't beat Houston, I form of thought this could presumably occur. Folks have stated we lost our last three games. We lost two of our last three against top-20 teams, and one in every of them may be one of the best group in America. I hoped possibly they would look at it that manner but I believe they looked at [it] like we lost our last three games."

SMU defeated four ranked teams for the first time since 1955-56, which additionally was the varsity's solely Final 4 look. The Mustangs received 23 games for the first time since 1987-88 and earned 12 conference victories for the first time since 1992-ninety three.

SMU made Dallas a real house-court benefit, going 15-1 at residence, together with 9-1 in the newly renovated Moody Coliseum. Three of the team's wins over ranked opponents occurred in that building.

Brown spoke to his group briefly after the NCAA choice process was over.

"I mentioned I don't want anyone crying or complaining as a result of that takes away from the groups that bought in," Brown said.

Brown mentioned that when he saw that Louisville obtained a No. 4 seed, he "figured that they [the selection committee] didn't have a number of respect for our conference."

Brown harassed to his group to finish the season with a strong effort within the postseason and said he felt like the Mustangs didn't finish in addition to they may have, which could have cost them a chance to get to the NCAA event.

"I believe we'll be better for this," Brown stated. "I definitely hope I am and I am pretty confident the individuals in that locker room will study from it and grow from it, and hopefully it would assist our program get to the point where we would like it to be."

NCAA Tournament Bubble: Take a Blind Taste Test

Georgetown and Providence are in the bubble test

The final examination is getting close. Persons are debating the bubble. (and I might have a post on some of my pet peeves this week). Let’s do a blind check of teams. But rather than talk about how teams did against the RPI high 50 (sure, one of my pet peeves), let’s break it down. The RPI might be misleading, and after we break it down that way, we embrace losses to #1 seeds in the same breath as wins over groups that may not be within the match.

Taking a look at different mock brackets, I divided groups into teams of 15, based mostly on where they have been projected, from top seeds, to bubble teams, to teams probably within the NIT who have fallen off the bubble in recent weeks. This also helps, by the way in which, conceal the identification, as a result of most individuals are used to taking a look at Prime 50. I additionally embody a few other things, my “Wins over Bubble” rating, which takes your complete schedule, together with where video games are performed, and who (so there, even a game at #1 is handled method otherwise than at residence in opposition to #12), plus the general RPI vary a workforce is at present occupying. Few bubble groups have a great successful percentage towards the best groups within the nation. I highlighted in green (good) or orange (bad) when a team was above or below average in a particular category. There are 14 groups right here. 7 should make it, 7 shouldn't.

NCAA Bubble Test

So take the take a look at, who's in and who is out entering match weekend? Mark down the animals you want, after which decide as much as 7 groups to make the event.

Z. Johnson wins Tournament of Champions

KAPALUA, Hawaii – Zach Johnson is taking his place among the large boys in golf with two of the shortest clubs in his bag.

On a Plantation Course at Kapalua that needs to be paradise for the game's longest hitters, Johnson chipped in for his opening birdie after which hit 4 beautiful wedge pictures on the back 9 Monday to rally from two shots behind, close with a 7-under sixty six and win the Event of Champions.

"I simply picked it apart," Johnson mentioned.

[+] EnlargeZach Johnson

AP Photo/Marco GarciaZach Johnson's year acquired off to a good begin with a one-shot victory over Jordan Spieth in the Tournament of Champions.

That was pivotal on the back 9, where five gamers had a chance to win. Johnson ran off 4 birdies in a five-gap stretch, all of them with a wedge in his hand, none of the photographs significantly simple. He wound up with a one-shot win over Jordan Spieth, the perfect solution to begin a brand new yr.

Particularly after he ended the outdated one with a win.

Johnson didn't want any heroics this time, not like last month in California within the World Challenge when he holed a shot from the drop zone – with a wedge – on the final hole and wound up beating Tiger Woods in a playoff. Kapalua was mainly about chipping and putting, and Johnson is among the many finest.

"Getting the ball in the fairway and giving my wedges a chance was essential," he mentioned. "It's about plotting my manner, placing myself in a yardage spot that I do know goes to give me a chance."

Johnson, beginning his eleventh season on the PGA Tour, won for the 11th time in his profession. Since his rookie season in 2004, solely Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh have received more on the PGA Tour. It additionally was Johnson's third win in his last six begins, relationship to the BMW Championship exterior Chicago in September that certified him for this winners-solely tournament in Kapalua.

Spieth had a one-shot lead going into the back nine and thought solely of constructing three birdies. He started approach too late, dropping three good birdie chances in the gentle, middle portion of the again 9 and then ending with two birdies that solely gave him a runner-up end. He closed with a 70.

"I was more than happy with the finish, having the ability to birdie the final two holes and not less than have considerably of an opportunity on 18," said Spieth, who had a 100-foot eagle putt just off the entrance of the green to power a playoff. "But in the end, 14, 15, 16 really kind of hit me onerous in the course of the back 9."

He made par on all of them, twice missing putts from about 6 toes.

That's where Johnson thrived.

He caught Spieth for the lead with a wedge from eighty three yards to about 2 toes for birdie on No. 12. Johnson laid back with a three-wooden on the 14th gap and hit wedge to about 8 feet beneath the outlet for birdie and the outright lead. Maybe probably the most daunting shot came on the par-5 15th, up a steep slope to a green with a false entrance. The grain from the fairway and on the green was in opposition to him.

"For those who simply missed it just a little bit, it's come back at you," he said. "I hit an excellent shot."

He adopted that with a wedge to 5 feet and a tough, downhill putt that broke sharply toward the ocean that he made for his closing birdie.

Webb Simpson, tied with Spieth and defending champion Dustin Johnson to start out the ultimate spherical, by no means caught up and closed with a 70. Simpson tied for third with Kevin Streelman, who had a sixty seven.

Jason Dufner was four strokes back in fifth after a sixty nine.

Dustin Johnson made three bogeys earlier than making his first birdie. He shot seventy three and tied for sixth.

Jordan Spieth

Spieth had a one-shot lead going to the again nine.

Spieth was playing within the last group for the first time and seemed poised as ever. With birdies on both par 5s on the front nine, he had the outright lead and regarded as if he would possibly grow to be the youngest participant with two PGA Tour wins since Ralph Guldahl in 1932. The signature shot was from a bunker in need of the 14th green. He blasted out to 6 feet above the hole for a chance to match birdies with Zach Johnson, in the group ahead.

Besides that he missed it.

After which he had to scramble for par on the 15th when what he thought was a perfect shot rolled down the slope 45 yards away. "Yes!" Spieth mentioned when the ball was in flight. However when he saw it land softly and tumble down the hill, he adopted that with, "You've got to be kidding me."

It took two chips to reach the green, and solely a ten-foot par putt saved him in the sport.

Spieth missed an eight-foot birdie putt on the 16th, and the 2 birdies on the end not less than gave him a superb begin to his new yr. He earned $665,000.

Simpson, who received some encouraging news concerning the new child of caddie Paul Tesori before starting his spherical, additionally discovered the incorrect gear with consecutive bogeys early in the spherical and spent the remainder of the day trying to catch up. He birdied three of his final five holes, but that wasn't sufficient to keep tempo with the leader.

Masters champion Adam Scott got inside one shot of the lead with an eagle on the fifteenth hole, just for his wedge to hit the flag on the sixteenth. He had to settle for par, and he closed with a bogey to complete within the tie for sixth.

Charlotte’s layup knocks off No. 14 Michigan

Charlotte Stuns Michigan

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The Charlotte 49ers came to Puerto Rico an afterthought in a tournament that featured two ranked teams and two more from power conferences.

They’re going home champions.

Terrence Williams put back his own miss with 0.4 seconds left, giving Charlotte a stunning win over No. 14 Michigan on Sunday in the final of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

“That’s one of the most incredible basketball games I’ve ever been a part of,” Charlotte coach Alan Major said. “All three games in this tournament got sticky… The thing that’s been the thing that’s been the most encouraging and fun for me is watching them coming together down here and just trying to be a team.

“They deserve this,” Major said.

The title is the 49ers’ (5-1) second early-season tournament win in two seasons. They won the Great Alaska Shootout last season.

Michigan’s Mitch McGary tied it at 61 on a layup with 9 seconds left, but Charlotte quickly pushed the ball up the floor. Williams missed a layup but got his own rebound and scored.

“I just stayed with it so I could get an extra chance at the basket and I ended up making the shot,” Williams said. “There was no time to think I just had to react.”

Denzel Ingram had 12 points and Willie Clayton added 10 points and 15 rebounds to lead the 49ers. Pierria Henry chipped in 11 points. Charlotte’s Shawn Lester was named to the all-tournament team.

“We told them before the game, you belong in this game,” Major said. “You’ve earned your way into it. Whatever was lined up before, bracket-wise and who’s in it, you can’t control that. But you can control the way you play. You can control how close you are as a team. You can control your toughness.

“We just said before the game – it’s enough,” he added. “Don’t worry that you don’t have enough. If you rely on each other, you’ve got enough.”

Michigan overcame a 16-point deficit in Friday’s semifinal against Florida State to win in overtime. On Sunday it stayed in the game despite shooting just 31 percent for the game.

The Wolverines (4-2) also played most of the night without starting forward Glenn Robinson III, who logged only 9 minutes as he struggled with back problems.

The one player that was able to keep up the scoring load was Michigan’s Nik Stauskas, who was chosen the tournament’s most valuable player. He finished with 20 points, but played through an ankle injury over the final 9 minutes. Caris LeVert added 11 points.

“The injury was tough, especially defensively, because they noticed it real quick and whoever I was guarding just started running around a bunch of screens,” Stauskas said. “It was definitely difficult just to move around and put pressure on them. I was kind of limited.”

Charlotte held about a six-point cushion for most of the second half until Michigan took its first lead of the half – 47-46 – on a pair of free throws by LeVert with 6:12 remaining in the game.

But McGary, playing in his fourth game back from a back injury, was forced to the bench with his fourth foul at the 5:26 mark. The 49ers attacked, and immediately went on an 8-2 run to take back the advantage at 54-49.

McGary returned with the clock under three minutes, and cut the 49ers’ lead to 58-55.

Then, after another Charlotte basket Michigan cut it to 60-58 on a 3-pointer by Zak Irvin.

Michigan fouled, and Williams hit 1 of 2 free throws.

The Wolverines came up empty on the next possession, but after a foul this time Williams missed the front end of a 1-and-1.

Spike Albrecht was fouled in a scramble on Michigan’s next trip down the floor and hit the first of his free throws to make it 61-59. He missed the second, but a scramble for the rebound ended up in a jump ball and the possession arrow favored Michigan with 11.4 seconds left.

McGary got free on the inbounds pass for a layup, but Charlotte quickly pushed the ball up the floor to set up the final sequence.

“Another March game played in November,” Michigan coach John Beilein said. “Charlotte was really good… We’re embracing this and saying, ‘What a great opportunity to grow.’ We had adversity tonight like we hadn’t had, and we just kept plugging away.

“It’s all good. I know that sounds crazy, but it’s all good to come into that environment, play as hard as we did and fight back to have a chance to win.”

Major said it’s way too early to think about what his team’s ceiling might be this season, though.

“Our thing is gonna be let’s take the good from these three games and try to store that away,” Major said. “We can still get better. Let’s take improvement and see where we can go from here. I think it gives the guys a taste of how good we can be at some point. But what that is, I don’t know.”

Andriy Shevchenko’s professional golf career didn’t start too well

Many skilled footballers present a flare for golf once they grasp up their boots, but Milan legend Andriy Shevchenko has taken his passion for the fairways a step additional by participating in an expert event.

Despite playing off a retired-bank-supervisor handicap of two, the 2004 Ballon d’Or winner entered the Kharkov Superior Cup, a second-tier Challenge Tour tournament in his native Ukraine.

Unfortunately, after the primary day of play on Thursday, left-handed Sheva didn’t set the golfing world alight, capturing 12-over eighty four, bogeying eight holes of the front nine:

Shevchenko is undoubtedly used to shooting 12 over form his days at Stamford Bridge (Boom!) nevertheless it appears most unlikely he’ll make Friday’s cut. In accordance with Spanish newspaper AS, his lengthy-term goal is to play golf at the Olympics.

While the 36-year-old shouldn’t hold his breath for Rio 2016, he’ll receive a quantum of solace from the fact that he was definitely not the worst golfer of the Ukrainian tournament. That dubious honour went to went to Poland’s Pawel Japol, who managed to shoot 37 over:

Presumably, he was utilizing his golf equipment upside down on the thirteenth hole.

Anyway, we should always get again to writing about soccer now…

The Las Vegas Summer League’s new tournament format generated very little additional interest

The Golden State Warriors celebrate their first championship since 1975 (Garrett Ellwood/ Getty).

The NBA’s annual Las Vegas Summer League came to a conclusion on Monday night with the Golden State Warriors defeating the Phoenix Suns 91-77. It was an entertaining game in the form we’ve come to expect from these late-July contests: a little loose, featuring only a handful of notable players, but mostly enjoyable simply because it had one of the highest levels of talent in the world of basketball.

Monday’s finale was different, though, in that it was an honest-to-goodness championship game. The Warriors’ victory, in which non-roster invitee Ian Clark hit 7-of-10 shots from beyond the arc for 33 points and Championship Game MVP honors, gave them a real trophy, “Victory in Vegas” Adidas-branded title shirts, and the satisfaction of knowing they’d accomplished a goal. (It also solidified the team’s reputation as a Summer League dynasty whose dominance had been proven only unofficially in previous years.) It’s unclear how meaningful the accomplishment is, but it still gives the Warriors another positive moment to build on for the future.

However, this new eight-team tournament format (announced in March) didn’t necessarily drive any more public interest in Summer League. While it still holds value for teams looking to find potential training camp participants and teach rookies their systems, only the most diehard fans seem to derive any special pleasure from Summer League. The tournament has lent structure to the event, but its premiere these past few weeks didn’t necessarily do much to make the games more exciting. Now that we’ve experienced the tournament, does it have any special purpose?

We have to consider that it might not. Summer League is not a major event — it takes place in relatively small gyms for a select group of motivated fans, and only participation by genuine stars and more prominent TV slots could turn it into a bigger deal. Greg Oden and Kevin Durant, the most anticipated rookies since 2003, couldn’t do much to get people to watch NBA TV during their Summer League appearances in 2007. It’s possible that the seemingly loaded, Andrew Wiggins-centric draft class of 2014 could change things, but Summer League contains very little to interest casual fans.

To put it another way, the tournament may only be valuable to the extent it makes these games more watchable for the fans who already invest their time in Summer League. Those of us who do watch the games certainly didn’t find them any less entertaining than usual — it was the usual Summer League, just with the added drama of potentially not getting to watch certain players past the moment their team was eliminated. It was pleasant and kind of cool, if also clearly something unlikely to appeal to a critical mass of fans.

And that’s probably fine. There’s a tendency in sports fandom and analysis to confront a league’s inability to become as large and focus-intensive as possible as a failure in need of a fix. But some games can be enjoyable specifically because they’re mostly inconsequential. In these formats, it can be fun to kick back and watch the artistry on display devoid of any overbearing context apart from the possibility that a player will find a job where there previously wasn’t one or catch his coaches’ attention before training camp. It’s more or less a diversion, and sometimes sports don’t have to be anything more.

Tahiti players hold ‘thank you, Brazil’ banner after their final Confederations Cup match

Tahiti lost their three Confederations Cup group-stage matches by a combined score of 24-1, but being the gracious guests that they are, they still took the time to thank the host nation. Following their 8-0 loss to Uruguay, in which they surrendered the fastest goal in the Confederations Cup’s brief history (79 seconds, scored by Abel Hernandez), the Tahitian players held a large banner that read “Obrigado Brasil!” (thank you, Brazil) as they waved farewell.

As the smallest nation to ever compete in a FIFA senior tournament, Tahiti instantly became fan favorites at the tournament. Their popularity only grew when they managed to score in their first match against Nigeria and gave traditional shell necklaces to all of their opponents before every match. Their massive defeats in every match prompted some critics to argue that their inclusion in the tournament (achieved fair and square by winning the 2012 OFC Nations Cup) only served to devalue the competition. But the Brazilian people got behind the team at the time when they themselves are feeling like the little guy as they protest their government and fend off attacks from a violent police force in the streets.

“We have won a major victory here by winning the hearts of the Brazilian public,” said Tahiti manager Eddy Etaeta after their record-breaking 10-0 loss to Spain. “I think its fair to say we are better known in Brazil than we are in Tahiti.”

So the mostly amateur team returns home with a set of once in a lifetime memories and fans around the world. They never came close to winning any matches, but they did win a bit of admiration for their positive style both in attitude and in their refusal to play with cynical tactics by parking the bus and trying to frustrate their more talented opponents. Size and skill aside, it was nice to see a rare bit of joy and sportsmanship brought to a tournament of jaded giants.
