Top-ranked UConn shoots 49 percent from the industry in its dominant victory over Number 2 Duke.(USATSI)

CLARINGTON, N. C. – No . one Connecticut came into Cameron Indoor Arena and did something no other group in women’s basketball has been in a position to do.

The particular Huskies dominated Duke.

UConn routed the second-ranked Azure Devils 83-61 on Tuesday night time behind 21 points and a career-high seven 3-pointers from Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis in her first game back again from an injury.

Breanna Stewart had 24 factors and 11 rebounds for the Huskies (11-0), and Stefanie Dolson acquired 14 points and Bria Hartley finished with 13.

UConn shot 49 %, held the Blue Devils with no field goal for a critical 8-minute stretch while pushing its prospect well into the 20s and converted the 52nd meeting of Em. 1 and 2 into the newest blowout in this series.

“I think I would end up being less than honest if I said I think we could come in here and earn by 20, ” said trainer Geno Auriemma, who earned their 850th career win. “Simply since we haven’t played in [12 days]. We weren’t sure what we should were going to get from [Mosqueda-Lewis and Morgan Tuck]. And I thought Duke coming to home and they’ve got a bunch of upperclassmen.. it would be a little bit different. ”

It wasn’t.

UConn won the seventh straight in the series — and the previous six were made a decision by an average of nearly 30 factors.

Chelsea Grey had 13 points and Haley Peters finished with 11 regarding Duke (10-1), which saw the 24-game winning streak at Cameron j. snapped – a run that will dated to UConn’s last go to in 2011.

“We didn’t do what we needed to perform defensively, ” coach Joanne L. McCallie said. “We didn’t come back the way we need to rebound. And we demonstrated little patience on offense in critical times. ”

The Huskies, the only people to beat Duke on its house floor since 2008, now have performed it three times since anybody otherwise has found a way to do it as soon as.

They also ruined the Blue Devils’ undefeated begin with a rout for the third amount of time in four seasons.

Stewart did much of the early harm in her first appearance ahead of the Cameron Crazies – or at least that which was left of them, with the Duke learners on winter break. She has been four points shy of the profession high she matched last 30 days against Oregon.

And every time Duke threatened to create a run, the Huskies found a method to get Mosqueda-Lewis a clean seem from behind the 3-point series. She was especially accurate in the corners while showing no indications of rust after missing eight video games with a nerve contusion on her correct elbow.

“I don’t think we would have won the overall game the way we won it without having her, ” Auriemma said.

The Blue Demons, who spent the second half looking to claw their way back into the video game, pulled to 65-52 on At the Williams’ layup with just under 7 minutes left.

After a timeout, UConn worked the particular ball around the perimeter to Mosqueda-Lewis, who swished her fifth a few to restore the Huskies’ 18-point guide and help them pull away for their seventeenth consecutive victory.

“That’s something that coach has been informing me since last year – which i need to shoot every shot such as it’s the last shot, and take every shot like it’s a significant shot, ” Mosqueda-Lewis said.

Tricia Liston plus Alexis Jones each finished along with 10 points for Duke, which usually earned only five free includes and was 4 of eighteen from 3-point range.

“Horrible shot selection, inch McCallie said. “Chucking up pictures. ”

The particular Blue Devils were denied their particular first victory against a Number 1 team since 2007 — and were in serious risk of being run right off its house floor in the first half.

Stewart scored fifteen points in the half, and twelve of those came during the 13-minute period in which the Huskies outscored Duke 35-11 and turned a one-point debt into a 38-15 lead.

“You can’t necessarily earn a game in five minutes, but you can drop a game in five minutes if you don’t perform certain things, and then your body language as well as the way you react in individuals five minutes, ” Auriemma said. “If we score enough points throughout those six minutes and you avoid, it’s going to be hard to catch up. ”

For the Blue Demons, this one couldn’t have started a lot worse. They missed 12 consecutive shots during that drought before points finally started to click late within the half behind Gray.

She reeled off 6 straight points before Chloe Wells’ 3-pointer with 35 seconds remaining in the half pulled Duke in order to 41-26.

Bucks at Bobcats final score: Milwaukee drops 11th straight in 92-76 loss in Charlotte

Nov 29, 2013; Charlotte, NC, USA; Charlotte Bobcats middle Al Jefferson (25) shoots the ball over Milwaukee Bucks energy ahead Ekpe Udoh (5) in the course of the second half at Time Warner Cable Enviornment. Bobcats defeated the Bucks 92-seventy six. Obligatory Credit: Jeremy Brevard-USA IN THE PRESENT DAY Sports

Coming into the 2013-2014 season, there was a rumored directive from the proprietor’s office in Milwaukee that the Bucks would not be tanking, and would relatively compete for a decrease-tier playoff spot. Nonetheless, it appears that the Bucks organization didn’t account for the truth that their current roster could be quite this dysfunctional.

The Bucks misplaced their eleventh consecutive choice by the hands of the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday evening, and so they did it in embarrassing trend by the score of 92-76. Milwaukee’s offense fully deserted them in the loss, as they shot just 33.three% as a crew and didn’t tally more than 21 points in any of the four quarters.

Brandon Knight, the workforce’s place to begin guard, was the lone statistical vibrant spot for Milwaukee, scoring 17 points on 7-of-11 capturing in half-hour, however that didn’t come close to making up for some of the carnage. OJ Mayo (2-11 FG), Khris Middleton (three-9 FG), John Henson (three-9 FG), Luke Ridnour (1-6 FG), and Gary Neal (4-11 FG) all failed to crack even forty% taking pictures on a person foundation during the game, and the truth that Milwaukee got destroyed on the glass (54 to 38) solely made the harm larger.

In equity to the Bucks, Charlotte played fairly well in this spot, especially on the defensive end. The rebounding differential was doubtless the one biggest factor, however huge man Al Jefferson had his best game of the season (23 points, 11 rebounds) and Charlotte continuously pressured less than optimal shots from the Bucks.

Overall, Milwaukee’s shedding streak is probably a good factor for the crew. It was largely preposterous for Milwaukee to attempt to compete for the 8th spot this season as an alternative of aiming for draft position, and even if the workforce elects to “compete” moving ahead, they’re in all probability in a big enough hole at this level where it won’t matter.

Newton carries Panthers to 7th straight win

Panthers Rally To Win Seventh Straight

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Cam Newton angrily slapped his hands together and stared into the end-zone stands, watching Miami Dolphins fans celebrate the interception he had just thrown.

His mistake helped put the Carolina Panthers in a deep hole Sunday, but Newton knew how to get out.

He led a late comeback for the second time in a week, converting a fourth-and-10 situation at his 20 with a completion to keep alive the Panthers’ final possession, and their touchdown with 43 seconds left beat Miami 20-16.

The Panthers (8-3) overcame a 16-3 first-half deficit for their seventh win in a row, their longest streak since 2003.

“It may not be pretty,” Newton said, “but at the end of the game we get that three-letter word, and that’s gorgeous.”

Newton hit Greg Olsen with a 1-yard pass for the winning score to cap a 12-play drive. Carolina also rallied past the New England Patriots with a late drive last Monday.

The Dolphins (5-6) fell to 2-2 since tackle Jonathan Martin left the team and the team’s bullying scandal began to mushroom.

“We’ve got to make plays at the end when it counts,” receiver Mike Wallace said. “We’ve got to have a killer instinct. I don’t think we have it that well right now. We’ve got to do a better job of putting teams away.”

The Panthers trailed 16-13 when their winning drive began at their own 20 with 4:13 left. With only one timeout remaining, they went for it on fourth down, and Newton threaded a pass between two defenders to Steve Smith for a 19-yard gain.

A backbreaker for Miami?

“I’m not sure there’s any other word to describe that,” defensive lineman Jared Odrick said.

“That’s when the tide shifted in our favor,” Newton said.

Carolina then converted two third downs before Newton hit Olsen for the winning score.

Ryan Tannehill nearly connected with Wallace for a 60-yard score in the final seconds, but the pass fell incomplete at the goal line.

“That’s a tough play,” Tannehill said. “You’re basically a hope and a prayer and get it out there.”

“A little scary,” Carolina coach Ron Rivera said.

Tannehill and Wallace earlier teamed up for a 53-yard touchdown and a 57-yard completion to set up a field goal.

Newton’s interception led to another field goal by Miami. He was erratic at the outset, perhaps partly because he bit his tongue when hit on the first series, and he finished with a quarterback rating of only 60.6.

But Newton was at his best with time running out. Following the Panthers’ uncharacteristically slow start, he led them 52 yards for a field goal in the final 61 seconds of the first half with no timeouts left, taking advantage of Miami’s soft coverage to cut the deficit to 16-6.

Rivera’s willingness to take chances paid off in the third quarter. From the Panthers 41, Newton ran for 8 yards to convert a fourth-and-1, and they went on to complete an 83-yard touchdown drive to make the score 16-13.

“They have been calling our coach Riverboat Ron because he likes to gamble,” Newton said.

Newton scored on a 5-yard keeper in the third quarter and celebrated with a dance tribute to LeBron James, mindful he was in the Miami Heat star’s area code.

“Three-oh-five is where he reigns supreme with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh,” Newton said. “I’m big fans of those guys.”

For the second game in a row, the Panthers’ Luke Kuechly made a big play in the end zone that was disputed. He appeared to make helmet-to-helmet contact when he broke up a potential touchdown catch by Rishard Matthews, and an official threw a flag, but the referee determined there was no penalty and Miami settled for a field goal and a 16-3 lead.

Kuechly bear-hugged the Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski on the final play of the Panthers’ victory at New England last Monday.

While Tannehill threw for 280 yards, he was also sacked three times to increase his season total to 44, a franchise record. Carolina held Miami’s running backs to 16 yards in 13 carries and shut out the Dolphins over the final 31 minutes.

“We were lazy in the first half,” Carolina’s Smith said. “We underestimated that team.”

The Dolphins fell to 4-4 in games decided by four points or less.

“We were a couple of plays away from winning,” Tannehill said. “We’ve got to be able to make those plays. It’s tough to win three-point games every week. When the defense is playing well like that, we’ve got to be able to score more points.”

Game notes

Miami RB Daniel Thomas left the game in the third quarter with a left ankle injury… The Panthers had been 0-4 previously against Miami… Ted Ginn Jr. dropped a potential 50-yard catch playing in Miami for the first time since he left the Dolphins as a first-round bust following the 2009 season… The Dolphins announced their annual cycling event has raised $3.1 million for the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

NFL Week 10 Game Recap- Carolina Stops San Francisco To Win Fifth Straight

Carolina Panthers (6-3)- 10

San Francisco 49ers (6-3)- 9

Line: SF -6.0

Over/Under: 43.0

Much hoopla was made about the Carolina Panthers winning streak with people saying they haven’t beaten a “quality” opponent during their run… well now the Panthers can put all the nay sayers to bed (at least this week) with a dominate defensive performance on the road against the reigning NFC champs San Francisco 49ers on Sunday by shutting them out in the second half and notching that “signature” win 10-9 and extending their winning streak to five games.

Colin Kaepernick had no answer against the swarming Panthers defense as he was held to only 91 yards on 11 of 22 with one interception. He was also sacked six times for a 42.0 passer rating.

Kaepernick’s interception to Drayton Florence in the final minute assured Carolina’s victory while putting an end to San Francisco’s five-game winning streak.

San Francisco now sits at 6-3… 2 ½ games out of first place in the NFC West behind Seattle (9-1).

I don’t think it really bothers us, it gives us the opportunity to step up to the challenge. We did,” said wide receiver Steve Smith. A win like this can boost us, a win like this can continue to give us life throughout the season, and make us feel like we’re working for something, and we are.”

The difference in the game for Carolina (6-3) was Graham Gano’s 53-yard field goal with 10:05 remaining in the game as the defense took over from there shutting down any 49er drive after that.

This game is a maturity jump for us, because in the past what I’ve been part of, we’ve been somewhat uncertain of how we will turn out in these types of games,” Carolina quarterback Cam Newton said. “We needed that type of game, just to be in a dog fight, in somewhat of a barnburner, to show what type of team this really is.”

Cam Newton’s numbers were only slightly better then Kaepernicks going 16 of 32 for 169 yards, an interception and four sacks for a 52.7 rating.

Not the kind of numbers you would expect from two quarterbacks who have been leading their offenses to put up some points this past month.

As the game went on, it got more and more intense,” Smith said.

The 49ers may be without the services of Vernon Davis and rookie safety Eric Reid to concussions as they get set to take on the New Orleans Saints and the Washington Redskins in back-to-back road games.

We’ll do what we do, bounce back, regroup, refit and reorganize and come back this week,” coach Jim Harbaugh said.

San Francisco did however get All-Pro linebacker Aldon Smith back, but played limited snaps after missing five games due to undergoing treatment for substance abuse.

Receiver Mario Manningham also returned to action, making his season-debut after nearly 11 months due to knee surgery. He ended the afternoon with three catches.

Not the kind of offensive performance we were expecting, but both defenses stepped up to keep it entertaining.

For the most part, I don’t really think they did anything that necessarily confused us, 49ers center Jonathan Goodwin said. “They only gave up nine points. It’s hard not to give them credit. We expected it to be a physical game. Did we expect to score only nine points? Nah.”

This one really did come down to the way the defense played,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “Any time you put yourself in a position where you can force the other team to kick field goals, you get a chance to win.”

And that they did and with the win as Carolina now sits one game back in the NFC South behind New Orleans (7-2).

Hyde ran for 149 yards, together with 106 and two touchdowns in the second half, to guide the Buckeyes again from a halftime deficit to a 34-24 victory over Iowa on Saturday, extending their win streak to an FBS-finest 19 straight.

The sport tilted on two athletic performs early in the fourth quarter.

Buckeyes quarterback Braxton Miller escaped the frenzy, ran proper after which scooted all the best way to the left sideline, running perhaps seventy five yards to gain 9 for a primary down.

On the following play from the Iowa 19, Hyde took a handoff – the call is 13 sprint – and bounced off right tackle. He rumbled to the 7-yard line, where he was hit exhausting by free safety Tanner Miller, the blow knocking him off steadiness. He had retreated all the way in which to the 11 by the point he regained his bearings and turned up the fitting sideline. Hyde ran to the 3 earlier than vaulting just inside the nook submit for the landing that put the Buckeyes (7-zero, 3-0 Massive Ten) ahead to stay.

“I’ve by no means had a run like that however that play was working all day,” the senior tailback said. “The security got here up and hit me. I got here out of it and I was still up. I used to be like, ‘Let me attempt to catch my steadiness.’ Once I did I rotated… I used to be like, ‘Man, I have not even scored but.’ When I noticed (wideout Corey Brown’s) block, I just went in for the landing.”

The game wasn’t the identical after that.

“That run by Carlos, I don’t know, that’s God-given for him to make somebody miss a tackle like that and just preserve shifting ahead,” said Miller, who accomplished 22 of 27 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns (58 yards to Brown and 14 yards to Devin Smith) and ran for 102 yards. “And then to dive into the top zone like that, that’s candy.”

The 19 straight wins ties the second-greatest streak in class history.

But it surely didn’t come straightforward.

The Hawkeyes (four-three, 1-2) dominated offensively in the first half and led 21-14 behind the sturdy play of quarterback Jake Rudock. He hit on 19 of 34 passes for 245 yards and three scores overlaying 2 yards to C.J. Fidorowicz, 6 yards to Kevonte Martin-Manley and 85 yards to Jake Duzey.

However Hyde tied it with the first dashing TD against Iowa this season on Ohio State’s first drive of the third quarter, and the Buckeyes eventually took over.

“You aren’t getting a prize for enjoying a good first half,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz mentioned. “You need to play a full 60 minutes.”

After watching Iowa’s offense management the opening half, the Buckeyes outgained the Hawkeyes 306-153 within the last two quarters. They piled up a 23:05-6:55 edge in time of possession within the half.

The Buckeyes have not lost in City Meyer’s two years as head coach.

“I’ve discovered a lesson in my life. I will enjoy this win,” Meyer scored. “I really feel excellent. I will go hug my gamers and hug my family and go to work tomorrow. But, tonight? I am not anxious about any (problems on) protection. I’ll enjoy this win.”

Teams had run 204 instances this season against Iowa’s protection before the Buckeyes finally broke by for a rating. Hyde barely bought the nose of the ball across the goal line from a yard out to tie the sport at 17 on the primary collection of the second half.

The teams traded touchdowns, Miller hitting Smith before Iowa evened it on the following snap on Rudock’s excellent spiral in step to Duzey down the suitable sideline.

Then Hyde scored on the hit that in the first place staggered him to place Ohio State ahead for keeps.

Ohio State’s protection finally held and compelled a punt, with the Buckeyes including Drew Basil’s field goal to make it a ten-level lead that they maintained the remainder of the way in which.

Ohio State’s All-Massive Ten cornerback, Bradley Roby, was ejected from the game for successful to the head of a receiver within the first quarter.

Rudock tossed a short cross over the center to tight finish Fiedorowicz with Roby hitting him high after an 11-yard gain.

Meyer questioned the call. Ferentz stated it was right.

The crowd of one zero five,264 booed loudly because the play was reviewed, and Roby was despatched to the sideline. He then slowly walked to the locker room, all of the whereas shaking his head.

Because it turned out, the Buckeyes obtained by – barely – with out him.

Meyer declined to sit up for the first Bowl Championship Sequence rankings on Sunday or to the place his group suits into the massive image.

“I want I had our guys dwelling on a desert island with us,” he mentioned. “I don’t want to hear the rest apart from let’s go get able to win No. eight.”

New York Jets will start Mark Sanchez for second straight preseason game

(USA At the moment Sports activities Pictures)

A day after Rex Ryan described Geno Smith’s practice performance as “brutal,” the New York Jets unsurprisingly announced that Mark Sanchez will get a second straight begin this preseason.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”17″]

The veteran quarterback will start Saturday towards the Jaguars.

Smith will nonetheless have two games after this week to impress whoever in the Jets organization is making the decision on the beginning quarterback for the season opener, but Sanchez has a reasonably nice alternative to widen his lead.

Sanchez had one horrible mistake last week in an otherwise stable efficiency. On a display screen pass on the first sequence, instead of throwing it away when his target got caught up on the line of scrimmage, Sanchez threw it proper to defensive end Ziggy Ansah. Ansah picked it off and ran it back for a landing. But then Sanchez settled in. He completed 10-of-thirteen for 125 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. But that’s the factor with Sanchez: A decide-six on certainly one of his thirteen throws isn’t insignificant. He has to reduce mistakes to start reestablishing himself as a reputable NFL quarterback.

Smith is not healthy. He damage his ankle towards Detroit, and whereas he is valiantly working towards by it, Ryan stated the ankle situation affected Smith in Wednesday’s poor follow outing.

Now the rookie Smith must wait his turn for a second straight game while Sanchez tries to inch closer to beginning when the games rely.

Nadine Angerer saves two penalties to help Germany win sixth straight Euro title

Though German substitute Anja Mittag deserves credit for scoring the one purpose in her aspect’s Euro 2013 remaining towards Norway simply three minutes after coming into the match, awesomely named goalkeeper Nadine Angerer proved to be the star by stopping a penalty in each half.

In the 29th minute, Norway had their first probability from the penalty spot, but Angerer made a leg save as she dove away from Trine Ronning’s arduous-hit shot down the center. Mittag then put Germany forward together with her goal within the 49th minute. In the 61st, Norway again had a penalty probability, this time giving it to Solveig Gulbrandsen. But Angerer nonetheless wasn’t within the mood to surrender her clear sheet and this time made a diving save along with her outstretched glove.

Angerer was understandably named Participant of the Match as she gained her fifth European title (to go with her two World Cup wins and one Champions League title).

Park wins US Women’s Open for 3rd straight major

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Inbee Park understood the meaning of winning the U.S. Women’s Open much better the second time around.

She appreciated, too, the magnitude of this particular accomplishment.

On Sunday, Park became the first player in the modern era to win the first three majors of the year.

Babe Zaharias did it in 1950 when there were only three to enter. Now there are five.

”I didn’t expect myself being in this kind of position, breaking some kind of record that hasn’t been broken for 50 years,” Park said. ”I never dreamed of myself doing that.”

The world’s top-ranked player finished at 8 under to win by four strokes. Her 2-over 74 in the final round was more than enough, with Sebonack’s trying conditions keeping any rivals from making a run. Only three players were under par for the tournament.

Fellow South Korean I.K. Kim also shot 74 for her second runner-up finish at a major.

Ahead by four strokes at the start of the round, Park birdied the ninth and 10th holes to extend her lead. She has won six times already this year, including three straight tournaments. Park added to another historic U.S. Women’s Open victory in 2008, when she became the event’s youngest champion at age 19.

”I didn’t know what was going on at that time,” Park said. ”I played very good golf then, but I didn’t know what I was playing for, and that was just my first win. It was a great championship then, but now I think I really appreciate more and I really know what this means.”

So Yeon Ryu shot 72 to finish third at 1 under. South Korean players took the top three spots and have won the last five majors.

Ryu and Na Yeon Choi, the last two U.S. Women’s Open champs, sprayed Park with champagne after she made her final putt on the 18th green.

With lashing wind and devilish greens, Sebonack was a classically troublesome U.S. Women’s Open course. And once Park built a lead, nobody could mount a charge.

She certainly wasn’t going to make enough mistakes to come back to the field. Park had just 10 bogeys and no double bogeys in four rounds.

She predicted Saturday that shooting even par in the final round would be enough, and she sure was right.

All of four players were under par Sunday – though that was still more than the third round, when only Park achieved it.

Kim birdied No. 2 to pull within three strokes; she couldn’t claw closer. And when she bogeyed the fourth hole, the deficit was back to four shots.

Park bogeyed the sixth and seventh, but so did Kim.

Kim had what would have qualified as a sensational week if not for Park, finishing at least three strokes better than everyone but the player currently dominating the sport.

”You can obviously feel for someone like I.K. Kim who would be winning any other U.S. Open on this golf course if it weren’t for Inbee,” said seven-time major champion Karrie Webb.

This was Kim’s fourth top-four finish at a U.S. Women’s Open, but she’s still seeking her first major title. She was a foot away last year at the Kraft Nabisco, then missed a short putt on No. 18 that would have clinched the championship and went on to lose in a playoff.

Asked if she feels she’s on the verge of a major breakthrough, Kim paused for a moment then said: ”Yeah, to be honest, yeah, it’s time to win it.

”But I think things have to come naturally,” she added, ”and it’s great to play with Inbee, and she’s doing so well. Seeing her doing it, it just makes me want it more.”

Americans Paula Creamer (72) and Angela Stanford (74) and England’s Jodi Ewart Shadoff (76) tied for fourth at 1 over. Shadoff was alone in third at 3 under after the third round but opened Sunday with three straight bogeys.

Soon-to-be Oklahoma State player Casie Cathrea shot 70 on Sunday to match Shanshan Feng for the best round of the day and finish as the low amateur at 9 over. Lydia Ko, the 16-year-old New Zealander who won the Canadian Open last August to become the youngest LPGA Tour winner, was next at 11 over.

Park also became the second player to win the U.S. Women’s Open after victories in her previous two tournaments. Mickey Wright did it in 1964.

The 24-year-old Park won the Kraft Nabisco and LPGA Championship for her first two major titles of the year. Up next is the Women’s British Open at St. Andrews on Aug. 1-4.

The Evian Championship is Sept. 12-15. Park won the French event last year before it became a major championship.

Park contemplated the current definition of a Grand Slam.

”So I think the British Open is one I have to win,” she said. ”So it would be great if I could win five, but I still think four means a Grand Slam.”

Laughing, she added: ”I think four out of five is very big.”

LeBron James named NBA Finals MVP for second straight year: ‘I ain’t got no worries’

LeBron James was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2013 NBA Finals on Thursday night, earning his second straight Finals MVP trophy after his Miami Heat won their second straight NBA championship by beating the San Antonio Spurs, 95-88, in Game 7 to earn a 4-3 series win in one of the most thrilling NBA Finals we’ve seen in quite some time.

James was sensational in Game 7, leading all scorers with 37 points on 12 for 23 shooting, grabbing a team-high 12 rebounds, dishing four assists and snagging two steals in 45 brilliant minutes. He averaged 25.3 points, 10.9 rebounds and seven assists per game in the series, shooting 44.7 percent from the floor, 35.3 percent from 3-point range and 79.5 percent from the foul line.

When James accepted the Bill Russell Trophy awarded to the Finals’ Most Valuable Player after the Heat’s 2011-12 championship win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, he said it was “about damn time” he’d won an NBA title and series MVP award in his third trip to the title round. This time around, he was a bit more circumspect, opening his remarks by giving credit to the Spurs as a first-class organization and a team that had given his Heat its toughest challenge since James joined Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in South Beach in the summer of 2010.

James did the lion’s share of his Game 7 damage with his jump shot, a tool he’d worked tirelessly to improve but had seemed to abandon him as San Antonio defenders repeatedly sagged off him and packed the paint to cut off driving lanes to the basket. Early in the series, those midrange jumpers (14 for 38 through six games) and 3-point looks (7 for 24) weren’t falling for James. But in Game 7, when he needed them most, his stroke was true, going 9 for 20 outside the paint, including 5 for 10 from long distance, to give the Heat a needed deep threat on a night where Ray Allen, Mike Miller and Mario Chalmers combined to shoot 1 for 13 from 3-point range.

ABC sideline reporter Doris Burke asked James about how it felt to finally find the rhythm on the jumper after all the time he’d invested in improving it.

“I work on my game a lot,” James said. “Throughout the offseason, I put a lot of work into it. And to be able to come out here and [have] the results happen out on the floor is the ultimate.. it’s the ultimate. I’m at a loss for words.”

Luckily, that wasn’t the case when it came time to discuss the seemingly endless outside pressure and electron-microscope-level scrutiny James faces.

Heading into Game 7, plenty of ink was spilled and words exchanged about how every game seems like the biggest game of LeBron’s life and, in the eyes of some, will always serve as some sort of referendum on James’ talent, demeanor and place among basketball’s immortals. When Burke asked how he’s managed to continue to perform at such a high level in the midst of all those external stresses, James reached for some inspiration from noted NBA fan/philosopher Lil Wayne.

“Listen, for me, I can’t worry about what everybody say about me,” James said, as the AmericanAirlines Arena faithful cheered. “I’m LeBron James from Akron, Ohio, from the inner city. I’m not even supposed to be here. That’s enough.

“Every night I walk into the locker room, I see a number 6 [jersey] with ‘James’ on the back,” he continued. “I’m blessed. So what everybody’s saying about me off the court don’t matter. I ain’t got no worries.”

What he does have, though, is one of the most impressive 18-month stretches in NBA history, with consecutive regular-season Most Valuable Player awards, consecutive NBA titles and consecutive NBA Finals MVP trophies bracketing an Olympic gold medal. While a 2013-14 season that starts in 133 days will surely give him plenty to gnash his teeth over, on this night, LeBron James has the basketball world on a string, and there’s not a thing in that world that he’s got to worry about.
