UConn No. 1 in Lincoln; Stanford draws No. 2

Connecticut has landed within the Lincoln Region as the top seed for the women's NCAA tournament, which begins Saturday.

The Huskies (34-zero) will likely be making an attempt for a document ninth NCAA title, which might break a tie with Tennessee for most all-time.

Fellow unbeaten Notre Dame (32-0) additionally picked up a No. 1 seed as host of the Notre Dame Area, with Tennessee drawing the top seed in the Louisville Area and South Carolina getting the No. 1 seed within the Stanford Area.

Notre Dame plays in opposition to Robert Morris on Saturday. UConn opens Sunday in opposition to No. sixteen Prairie View.

It units the stage for the former Massive East rivals to meet in an historic national championship game and is simply the second time two groups have entered the NCAA match undefeated.

In the event that they do both get to Nashville, the Irish can be all that stands between Geno Auriemma and a report ninth title.

"We actually have not talked, I wager hardly at all, about this national championship or what number it's or any of that," Auriemma stated.

Regardless of being the 13th girls's staff to go unbeaten throughout the regular season, the Irish have felt almost unappreciated with most of the talk centered on the Huskies. Coach Muffet McGraw does not appear to mind.

"I like it as a result of we are able to get a chip on our shoulder and head into the event with a bit of chip," she said.

Although UConn and Notre Dame didn't play this season, the two teams know plenty about one another having met 12 instances over the previous three seasons. Notre Dame is not intimidated by Connecticut; the Irish have gained seven of the previous 9 meetings with the Huskies.

"It was very unusual to go through a complete season with out playing them, we're so used to it, 3 times yearly," McGraw stated. "We have gotten pretty good at beating them the last couple of years."

Earlier than the potential meeting of unbeatens, the 2 may need to go through SEC powers Tennessee and South Carolina, who also earned No. 1 seeds.

Whereas it is the twenty second time that the Girl Vols have earned a high spot, it's the primary for the Gamecocks. The Huskies, Lady Vols and Gamecocks all may should play on an opponent's residence court docket with a trip to Nashville on the line. Stanford, Notre Dame, Louisville and Nebraska, who're all internet hosting regionals, had been a mixed fifty two-3 at residence this season.

The Lady Vols, who gained the SEC tournament championship, are the highest seed in the Louisville Regional and would also like nothing more than to interrupt the tie with Connecticut and win their ninth NCAA title. They open up against Northwestern State and will probably be trying to end a five-12 months drought of not making the Closing 4. The Girl Vols won't have an easy path. West Virginia is the second seed. Host Louisville is the three seed and Maryland is the four.

Tennessee was concerned in the one different meeting between unbeatens. The Lady Vols routed Liberty within the opener of the 1998 tournament when both have been undefeated.

Like their SEC rivals, South Carolina would not have an easy street to the Ultimate 4. The Gamecocks may face an inspired younger North Carolina group in the regional semifinals before potentially taking part in host Stanford.

The Tar Heels and their stellar freshman class, led by Diamond Deshields, beat the Gamecocks in December. The Tar Heels also might have coach Sylvia Hatchell again on the sidelines at that point. The Corridor of Famer battled leukemia throughout the common season.

Whereas Hatchell's status is unknown for the match, Baylor shall be lacking coach Kim Mulkey for the first game. She is suspended for the primary round sport against Western Kentucky for comments she made last season after shedding to Louisville within the regional semifinals.

"I have not talked to the workforce in depth about me not coaching in the first recreation," Mulkey stated. "I will watch it on television at dwelling… I at all times tell the workforce something might happen to me on that sideline and it's best to be able to coach your self."

Connecticut may have to beat host Nebraska in the regional semifinals if each groups make it that far.

The host faculties have been chosen in October. Tennessee did not bid to host a regional because of a scheduling conflict at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Auriemma mentioned his school did not bid as a result of he didn't just like the concept of getting colleges host regionals.

"I do not imagine in it," Auriemma said. "I do not think it is fair and I informed our administration, 'We're passing on it. I don't want to do it.' So we did not."

Louisville coach Jeff Walz also would not like the concept of host websites for the regional rounds. Walz cited Louisville's eighty two-eighty one upset of prime-ranked Baylor in last 12 months's Oklahoma Metropolis Regional semifinal as evidence.

"I exploit us as an example," Walz stated. "If we played Baylor at Baylor last yr, I am not sure we win that game.. I am an enormous proponent of enjoying regionals on neutral flooring and I'm excited that we will again to."

The choice to have schools host regionals was made in an effort to attract larger crowds.

Last season, the NCAA posted an average attendance of 5,883 for all event games, a 21-p.c improve over 2012. But the event had posted average attendances of a minimum of 6,400 every year from 1998-2005.

The common attendance for regional rounds last yr was 7,a hundred, a 38-% improve over 2012 but a far cry from 10 to fifteen years in the past. Average attendance within the regional rounds had been over 8,000 5 occasions in a seven-yr stretch from 1998-2004.

"I believe residence courts are a real a part of the women's event versus the men's event," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said.

Next 12 months, the regionals will likely be back at impartial websites.

Auriemma has one idea for serving to these impartial sites draw massive crowds.

"We do have to search out, I believe, 4 cities which are hotbeds or probably, for ladies's basketball and we have got to offer them an opportunity to host the regionals, and give it to them for a few years at a time, instead of only a one-shot deal," Auriemma stated.

The Huskies have made it to the Closing Four in a file six straight seasons. They hope to make it to Nashville to maintain that streak alive.

If the Huskies do win the national championship it would be the fifth time they went undefeated in a season. This would be the first time that they gained 40 games, joining Baylor as the only teams ever to perform that feat.

The defending national champions have won games by an average of 36 points. They open up at home towards Prairie View A&M on Sunday evening. The Lady Panthers grew to become the ninth team to reach the NCAA event with a shedding file when they won the Southwestern Convention championship.

Tennessee will be making its 33rd straight look in the NCAA match, entering into the sector ever year. 5 teams will probably be making their first trip – Akron, North Dakota, South Dakota, Winthrop and Wright State.

Whereas these colleges will be getting their first taste of the NCAAs, Chattanooga's Jim Foster grew to become the first coach to take four totally different groups to the NCAA tournament.

NCAA Prediction Week 14 College Football Game Preview/Pick- #6 Clemson vs. #10 South Carolina

#6 Clemson Tigers (10-1) @ #10 South Carolina (9-2) 11/30- 7:00PM EST

Line: SCAR -5.0

Over/Under: 58.0

Yet another big time rivalry game is set this Saturday in the Southeast as No. 6 Clemson goes into Columbia to take on the #10 South Carolina Gamecocks in a game where the stakes (including bragging rights) will be high.

With title hopes on the line and rivalry bragging rights up for grabs, these two teams will be ready.

Sort of neat that we have two teams in the top 10 that started the season there and are still there after 11 games,” South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said. “I know our state is proud of the two football schools. It should be a heck of a game.”

I agree, as this year more then any, both Clemson (10-1) and South Carolina (9-2) are playing in a series that first started way back in 1896 that both teams coming in are ranked in the top 10 in 111 meetings.

To have two teams from the state of South Carolina nationally ranked, that makes this rivalry that much better,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. “Alabama and Auburn got the top-10 teams playing in their rivalry game, we got two top-10 teams playing in our rivalry game, and I think it makes for an exciting game.”

South Carolina goes into Saturday’s battle having won the last four games…. The first time that have done that since the 1951-54 seasons. They have yet to win five straight.

The Tigers last victory in the series happened in 2008 when now head coach Dabo Swinney carried the interim tag for a troubled football program. After the 31-14 victory over the Gamecocks, he was named permanent head coach and has responded by guiding Clemson to three straight 10-win seasons.

But despite Swinney’s success, having not won the biggest rivalry game since 2008 has left a hole in his resume.

When you’re the coach, all the losses you live with. The big state rival, that one’s more so, because everybody in your state lives with it,” he said. “Everybody wants those bragging rights.”

Saturday’s game will mark the final duel between Tiger’s record-setting quarterback Tajh Boyd and the Gamecocks’ top pass rusher and highly projected NFL first-rounder Jedeveon Clowney. Clowney made the claim he will never lose to Clemson in his career.

In last year’s game, Clowney dominated the Tigers with his defense as he brought down Boyd 4½ times throughout the contest to help lead his team to 27-17 victory.

Clowney backed up his play at this year’s SEC media day by saying….

I like to pick at quarterbacks. That’s what I do,” Clowney said. “If they can’t handle the heat, get out of the kitchen. I’m just playing.”

Fifth-year senior Boyd realizes the task at hand of finally needing to beat the Gamecocks, but says it will take a total team effort.

This game is bigger than one player,” Boyd said. “It’s not me versus him versus anybody else.”

Oddsmakers believe the Gamecock’s will get it done again this year making the home-team a (minus) -5.0 point favorites early on, but with odds changing, check the latest spread here through Wonder Punter leading up to kickoff.

It’s going to take a big game by Boyd to give his visiting Tigers a chance, but he has put up the numbers this year to get it done by going 233 of 346 for 3248 yards with 29 touchdowns.

The problem is come rivalry time, Boyd has fallen off performance wise passing for just 399 yards with three interceptions to only two touchdowns with 14 sacks in three games against the Gamecocks.

The numbers for Saturday’s contest have the Tiger’s averaging 515.6 yards per game, good for 11th in the country and the gamecocks at 465.8 yards per game which ranks 26th in college football. Clemson also holds the advantage with points scored with 42.3 (10th) to 34.4 (34th) for the Gamecocks.

Look for a steady diet of South Carolina sophomore running back Mike Davis to get some carries as he has 179 rushes for 1,112 yards.

I’m leaning towards the Gamecocks playing with a little bit more sense of passion because if they win, they will have another game next Saturday should No. 19 Texas A&M knock off No. 5 Missouri…. That loss would mean the Southeastern Eastern Division title for South Carolina.

Spurrier wants his team focused on the field and not on the scoreboard come Saturday and if they do should win yet another rivalry game against the Clemson Tigers.

We won’t think anything about it,” Spurrier said. “We really won’t.”

PICK: South Carolina

Ed Orgeron: USC Should Not Make Him First Choice, But He Could Be an Appealing Backup Plan

Ed Orgeron USC

Ed Orgeron is 5-1 since taking up for Lane Kiffin as interim head coach. His players are nicely fed. The Coliseum is full and not booing. He’s fresh off an enormous Stanford upset. Orgeron wants the pinnacle coaching job. At this time, he’d be a well-liked choice with gamers, fans and marching band members. But ought to Pat Haden hear?

Hiring the interim coach can be risky. There’s the apparent threat of a fleeting infatuation with the rebound man. There’s a small sample dimension. One recreation, a handful of video games or even a complete season can come down to luck. If Michigan does not come again from a 17-zero deficit to beat Virginia in 1995, Lloyd Carr is not hired. If Luke Fickell has higher fortune in one-score video games (1-5) in 2011 the best way City Meyer did in 2012 (6-zero), he may be Ohio State’s head coach.

Bill Stewart at West Virginia is the instance of what to not do with an interim head coach. However, a extra applicable parallel could also be Dabo Swinney. He’s a popular, enthusiastic guy and an incredible recruiter. He has no expertise as a coordinator. Dabo closed the 2008 season with 4 wins in his last five, beat South Carolina and acquired the everlasting job. He had some initial growing pains. It’s still debatable how good he has been. Nevertheless it was not a foul hire.

Ed Orgeron fist pumpHiring a position coach can be dangerous. A specialist can instill his vision on one side of the ball (a la Saban or Chip Kelly). A position coach has a unique command dynamic. He should rely on two expereinced coordinators. That may make it more durable to jump in and force changes.

That kind of CEO-model head coach can work. It just raises the level of issue. A Dabo or a Brady Hoke can have a clear vision, promote the program and with nice hires on each side of the ball can succeed. That style coach can even see issues snowball and be overwhelmed. That occurred to Derek Dooley. That occurred to Ed Orgeron throughout his head teaching stint at Ole Miss.

Orgeron inherited a not so nice state of affairs in Oxford. He made it worse. He did recruit – Houston Nutt received two Cotton Bowls together with his players – but he by no means assembled the correct workers or introduced a route to progress. He went 3-21 in the SEC, which is abominable, even by Ole Miss requirements. Would the second attempt be totally different?

Perhaps. USC is a distinct job than Ole Miss. Orgeron wouldn’t be forging an id at a non-traditional energy. He can be restoring and refurbishing an extant one (which he is well conversant in). Additionally, crucially, his presumed employees is already in place. The continuity would be helpful recruiting this yr and heading into next season. The price is minimal, a raise for Ed Orgeron. However what occurs three years down the highway?

Ed Orgeron with a swordThe query for Pat Haden just isn’t whether or not Orgeron has executed enough to earn the job. It’s what he can do sooner or later. Evaluation of that is determined by the analysis of what is happening now with this collective staff. Is that this a high quality group scheming effectively and getting essentially the most out of its talent? Or, is it really, ridiculously gifted players attempting lots harder for the more affable substitute instructor?

Haden is doing the fitting things: waiting and never saying a word. If USC beats UCLA and sneaks into the Pac 12 title recreation, dumping Orgeron is a difficult, unpopular decision. If USC will get dumped by three touchdowns, it’s a a lot easier one.

Orgeron’s probabilities could rely upon the place USC is with its teaching search. If Kevin Sumlin, Chris Petersen or one other A-checklist candidate has real curiosity, that’s the clear route to go. However, USC may discover it onerous to pry a coach from a second-tier program. With new TV revenues, schools such as Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Baylor are paying huge cash (in wage and facilities) to maintain good coaches. If Haden is confronted with blowing up this system for a candidate on his B or C-checklist, staying the course with Coach O could also be a far more interesting possibility.

NCAA Week 12 College Football Recap- #8 Clemson Wins Big!

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (6-4)- 31

Clemson Tigers (9-1)- 55

Tajh Boyd had a big night for his No. 8 Clemson Tigers throwing for 340 yards and four touchdowns to lead his team to a 55-31 victory over Georgia Tech on Thursday night breaking the all-time touchdown record in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

With Boyd’s four touchdown tosses on Thursday night, he now has 97 for his career, breaking the old-mark of 95 set by Phillip Rivers while at North Carolina State in 2000-03.

The fans at Death Valley got a scare in the third quarter when Boyd went down with an apparent collarbone injury as he headed for the locker room, only to return a short time later to the delight of the Tigers faithful although with the Tigers up 41-24 at that point, he was not needed to return to action.

With the win, No 8 Clemson moves to 9-1, 7-1 in ACC and for now at least stays in the BCS major bowl bid conversation but most importantly x-rays were negative.

It was a dire situation I felt like I needed to play I felt like I could’ve,” Boyd said. “But we were in a situation where it wasn’t needed.”

It was the third straight victory for Clemson since losing to Florida State 51-42 last month and have one remaining game at home with FCS opponent Citadel and with rival South Carolina still to play, Boyd has no intentions of slowing down.

No, man, I’m not going to miss my last game in the valley,” he said. “I’ll throw a pad in there and I’ll be fine.”

He’s a competitor,” Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris said. “My gosh, look at the records this guy has broken in the ACC. Wow. And in just three years.”

Georgia Tech (6-4, 5-3) went into Thursday’s night match-up with an opportunity of winning the ACC Coastal Division, but once they fell behind 20-0 early in the second quarter, it was too much to catch up.

The Yellow Jackets had won four of the past six meetings with the Tigers having success with their triple-option attack, but this time Clemson was up for the challenge shutting down the Yellow Jackets early and often to build a lead they would never surrender.

With the Yellow Jackets sporting an ACC-best 311 rushing yards a game, the were limited to only 72 in the first half.

The second half saw Georgia Tech cut the score to 27-17 on Robert Godhigh’s 65-yard touchdown run in the early third, but Clemson responded with scores on their next two possessions to take control for good.

Once we did that, we started feeling good about ourselves,” Godhigh said. “But when we started kicking ourselves in the foot again.”

Godhigh finished with 126 yards rushing and two touchdowns and added 103 yards receiving on five catches.

But, in the end it was too much Tajh Boyd.

AD on Gators’ woes: Muschamp ‘will fix it’

State Of The Florida Gators

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Embattled Florida Gators coach Will Muschamp should be feeling higher about his job security after receiving votes of confidence from university president Bernie Machen, athletic director Jeremy Foley and South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier on Wednesday.

“As athletic director, I’m a thousand p.c satisfied that Will Muschamp is the guy to steer this football program,” Foley stated in an announcement posted on the varsity’s athletics website. “Nothing has modified in what we really feel about Will Muschamp from the day we hired him. Everyone around here needs the same thing. We need to do what is right for the University of Florida.

Will Muschamp

Will Muschamp needs two wins in the last three games against South Carolina, Georgia Southern and Florida State to maintain alive the Gators’ 22-year streak of playing in a bowl recreation.

“We understand that this football season has not gone the way any of us needed it to go, actually not the way in which our fans wished it to go and, most of all, not the way Will Muschamp wished it to go.”

With 4 straight losses, Florida (4-5, 3-4 SEC) has fallen below500. The Gators had been crushed soundly 34-17 by Vanderbilt on Saturday on homecoming. It was Vandy’s first win at Florida since 1945.

Muschamp, in his third season because the Florida coach, has a 22-13 file and is 13-10 within the SEC and 1-1 in bowl games. He has five years remaining on his contract at a mean wage of $2,928,791.

“We now have a history of being profitable. We have a historical past of fixing issues once they need to be fixed, and that is what’s going to happen right here,” Foley mentioned. “And Coach Muschamp is the one that may repair it.”

Machen echoed those sentiments in his assertion.

“I need the Gator Nation to know that I have full confidence in Coach Muschamp and his leadership of the football program,” he stated.

With troublesome video games remaining towards No. 10 South Carolina on Saturday and No. 2 Florida State on Nov. 30, the Gators are in a combat to proceed a 22-yr streak of going to a bowl game.

Gators Now we have a historical past of being successful. We have now a history of fixing issues once they should be fastened, and that is what’s going to occur here. And Coach Muschamp is the one that will fix it.

- Jeremy Foley, Florida ADVERT

“I’m fine,” Muschamp stated Monday when asked about the personal toll of a difficult season. “I am a football coach. I go to work each day trying to find ways to get this football group better and get them to improve on how we play. That’s part of your job whether or not you are 9-1 at this level or you’re the place we are.

“It’s irritating. It’s very irritating, but you work and individuals are dependent on you to do a superb job, do an excellent job for the players and do a good job for the college. That is my job.”

The endorsements for Muschamp started Wednesday morning with Spurrier, who won the Heisman Trophy at Florida as a participant and guided the Gators to their first nationwide championship as a coach.

“I admire the best way he coaches his crew, runs the present down there,” Spurrier stated throughout the weekly SEC teleconference. “Last 12 months, I think he was SEC Coach of the Year. I feel after they beat FSU they were third within the nation in that BCS poll, and if Notre Dame had misplaced to Southern Cal, I believe Florida would have been in the nationwide championship sport final yr.

“Obviously this 12 months they’ve had a rash of accidents everywhere in the workforce that’s actually damage them. However they’ve still acquired plenty of ballplayers and so they’re nonetheless a really exhausting-nosed, bodily-type crew.”

Florida has lost 10 players for the season, together with seven starters. Quarterback Jeff Driskel broke a bone in his lower right leg early in Week 3 in opposition to Tennessee. Florida’s greatest participant, senior defensive sort out Dominique Easley, tore his ACL in practice days later. Tailback Matt Jones suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee throughout a Week 6 loss at LSU. Three beginning offensive tackles have missed important time with accidents this season.

The listing stored growing, as Muschamp introduced this week that starting middle linebacker Antonio Morrison would miss the remainder of the season with torn cartilage in his right knee.

Spurrier stated he’s by no means seen that many injuries on certainly one of his teams.

“Our groups, for some motive, we have not had a whole bunch of accidents,” he said. “I do not know why, however I don’t suppose I’ve ever seen quite as many as they’ve had.”

Gators suspend two more to start season

Florida coach Billy Donovan announced Thursday that transfers Dorian Finney-Smith and Damontre Harris have been suspended, becoming a member of senior point guard Scottie Wilbekin on the bench for the No. 10 Gators.

Donovan said the suspensions are indefinite, however sources informed ESPN that Wilbekin will possible sit for three-5 games to start out the season, while Finney-Smith and Harris are expected to miss the first two.

Finney-SmithDorian Finney-Smith, who transferred to Florida from Virginia Tech, will seemingly miss the primary two games of the season after being suspended by coach Billy Donovan.

“Effectively, I mean, you understand, it is what it’s,” Donovan said Thursday. “We just try to go together with the fellows that we know are going to be available, going to be there to play.”

Donovan mentioned all three will continue to observe.

“There’s some issues that they should do,” Donovan mentioned. “Hopefully, they will do it and we’ll see how that interprets going forward.”

Wilbekin began 29 video games at the level last season but will possible be challenged by talented freshman ground leader Kasey Hill, who will virtually actually begin while Wilbekin is out of the lineup. Hill might wind up supplanting Wilbekin as the total-time starter.

In accordance with a number of NBA scouts, the 6-foot-7 Finney-Smith has been as impressive as anyone in observe to date for the Gators. The former Virginia Tech ahead will bring versatility and toughness to the crew and could wind up beginning as soon as he serves his suspension. Harris transferred from South Carolina and may give Donovan and the Gators length and a shot-blocking presence off the bench.

Florida is among the deepest teams in the nation and should nonetheless have enough to compete with No. 20 Wisconsin in Madison on Nov. 12 as a part of the ESPN Tip-Off Marathon. The Gators open the season Nov. eight at residence towards North Florida and play Arkansas-Little Rock in Gainesville on Nov. sixteen within the third recreation of the season.
