Tiger Woods had high hopes for his first event following disappointing finishes at the Farmers Insurance Open and Dubai Desert Traditional.
If these hopes are to be fulfilled they'll be despite his first spherical performance and not due to it.
Woods made birdie on the final to save lots of what would have been a not-good first spherical 72 and turn it right into a not-too-terrible first-round seventy one (1 over for the match).
Here's a take a look at his up-and-down scorecard (he began on the again nine with eight straight pars):
I say "not awful" as a result of it usually does not take an incredible score to par to win on the robust PGA National. The last seven successful scores: 9 underneath, 12 below, 9 under, thirteen beneath, 9 beneath, 6 below, and 5 below.
Plus Woods shot a 62 on Sunday at this observe back in 2012 when Rory McIlroy gained so we know he's a minimum of able to some magic.
Tiger fans may take solace on this:
60th time in Tiger's @PGATOUR profession as professional he is opened with a round over par. Went on to win four of those occasions (23 times exterior high-20).

Still, there's work to be executed for the world No. 1 and he'll have to begin with a decidedly better second spherical on Friday.
Woods didn't say much after his spherical as he is often wont to do after middling performances like the one he gave on Thursday.
He did tell Golf Channel he did not have it on a day when there have been scores to be posted (early leaders were at 5 beneath).
"I did not make a lot," said Woods. "The first 4 holes out of the gate I had 4 attractiveness, didn't make any of them. I didn't hit the ball very effectively on the back 9. I've to start placing higher."
Woods did have chances on his first 9 (the back 9 on the course) and some birdies littered in would have really buoyed his round. But like he said, he couldn't get it to fall within the cup.
As long as he keeps hitting fairways and greens (he was 67 p.c on greens in regulation) I'm fairly confident the putting stroke will come.
I believe he's, too.
