The Raiders (four-12) ended their eleventh straight non-profitable season with six consecutive losses and big questions on the way forward for second-yr coach Dennis Allen. Oakland has gained eight video games in Allen's two seasons however after displaying signs of progress early this season, regressed down the stretch to place his job in jeopardy.

Murray’s 3 TDs rally Cowboys past Raiders

Cowboys Rally Past Raiders

Lions Earn Rare Thanksgiving Day Win

ARLINGTON, Texas – Tony Romo was sick, and it wasn’t because he had just watched the Oakland Raiders return a fumble for a touchdown on the opening kickoff.

After the Dallas quarterback caught a virus the night before Thanksgiving, his top two running backs were there to help out.

DeMarco Murray ran for three touchdowns, backup Lance Dunbar led Dallas with a career-high 82 yards rushing and the Cowboys overcame the shock of Oakland’s early score to beat the Raiders 31-24 on Thursday.

Romo still did his part. He was behind 7-0 before taking his first snap, and his offense didn’t have a yard in the second quarter when he took the field down 21-7 with less than two minutes remaining before halftime.

Five completions from Romo later, Murray scored on a 4-yard run 10 seconds before halftime and set the stage for a second-half rally that put the Cowboys (7-5) two games above500 for the first time since late last season.

Dallas is at least temporarily ahead of Philadelphia (6-5) atop the NFC East.

“To have the opening kickoff fumbled and returned for a touchdown and then be down a couple of scores in the first half, nobody blinked,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “The momentum kind of turned and I think guys started feeling pretty good and it just continued.”

Dallas was without kick returner Dwayne Harris because of a hamstring injury, and rookie replacement Terrance Williams gave the Raiders a touchdown with a fumble on the opening kickoff.

Greg Jenkins picked up the ball at the 23 after it squirted away from the pile and outran everyone to the pylon. The play was upheld on review after replay showed Williams’ knee hitting the turf just as the ball was coming out.

Matt McGloin, an undrafted rookie quarterback making his third career start, had a strong first half for the Raiders.

But without much help from the league’s fifth-best rushing attack, his offense stalled in the second half as Oakland (4-8) clinched an 11th straight season without a winning record since going to the Super Bowl during the 2002 season.

Rashad Jennings rushed for 35 yards on 17 carries – a 2.1-yard average – and had both of Oakland’s offensive touchdowns. Darren McFadden carried just five times for 13 yards in his return after missing three games with a hamstring injury.

The Raiders finished with 50 yards rushing – 1 more than their season low – while the Cowboys went in with the league’s 29th-ranked rushing offense and had 144 yards on the ground, their second-best total of the year.

“The game boiled down to, in the second half we wore down,” said Raiders coach Dennis Allen, the league’s youngest head coach, who was making his first appearance near the Dallas suburb of Hurst, where he grew up. “They were able to run the ball, and we weren’t able to get off the field.”

Murray had just 25 yards after his third TD but ran for another 38 to help Dallas burn the clock with a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter. Most of the late damage came on a drive to Dan Bailey’s 19-yard field goal to put Dallas up by 10 with 1:56 left.

Murray, who tied the score at 7-all on a 2-yard run the first play after a fumble by McGloin late in the first quarter, also had 39 yards receiving.

“I was just playing like I always play,” Murray said. “I’m not worried about anything else. I’m just doing the best I can do and trying to help this team win.”

Dunbar, who went out with a left knee sprain in the fourth quarter, sparked the tying and go-ahead touchdown drives in the second half, highlighted by a 45-yard run that led to a 4-yard scoring pass from Romo to Dez Bryant, who had seven catches for 61 yards.

McGloin, who was 18-of-30 for 255 yards, converted five straight third downs with passes on a pair of touchdown drives in the second quarter.

He also had a throw to Andre Holmes that was ruled a touchdown on second-and-goal from the 16. After the call was overturned on replay, Jennings scored from the 1 to put Oakland ahead 14-7.

Holmes, who played seven games for Dallas last season before he was sent to the practice squad, had career highs with seven catches for 136 yards. His previous high was 33 yards.

After McGloin completed a 21-yard pass to Holmes on the first play of the second half, the Raiders didn’t get another first down until the fourth quarter.

“We did start slow but this team is getting to that point where there is no panic anymore,” said Dallas cornerback Brandon Carr, who was burned repeatedly by Holmes but had an interception to stop a potential tying drive by the Raiders in the fourth quarter.

Raiders to handle DC’s gestures ‘in-house’

Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis might understand his defensive coordinator’s thought process, nevertheless it doesn’t mean he endorses what Jason Tarver was caught doing in his staff’s eventual 21-18 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. And Tarver himself issued a mea culpa for his actions.

Jason TarverRaiders defensive coordinator Jason Tarver apologized Monday for his gestures directed towards officers in Sunday’s recreation.

Tarver flipped a middle finger, on separate events, at the officials after a private foul was known as on cornerback Mike Jenkins for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell with eight:forty eight left in the third quarter.

Raiders release demoted QB Flynn

ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Oakland Raiders have moved on from the failed Matt Flynn experiment, releasing the $6.5 million quarterback after he was beaten out in coaching camp by Terrelle Pryor and following one poor common-season start.

Flynn, acquired by Oakland on April 1 to be the Raiders’ franchise quarterback from the Seattle Seahawks for a fifth-spherical decide in the 2014 draft and a 2015 conditional decide, had been demoted to third-string, behind Pryor and undrafted rookie Matt McGloin. This after Flynn threw a decide-6 interception, fumbled twice and was sacked seven instances in a 24-14 loss to Washington on Sept. 29.

He was booed mercilessly by the home crowd and his body language sagged as Pryor sat out that recreation recovering from a concussion. With Pryor under middle, the Raiders jumped out to a 17-zero lead over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday night en route to a 27-17 victory.

“I don’t know, precisely, what the reason was, why it didn’t work but it surely simply, it didn’t work,” Raiders coach Dennis Allen said. “Terrelle got here in and he took over the job and he’s earned the place that he’s in so we simply felt prefer it was in all probability greatest to go ahead and move on from that.”

A 12 months ago, Flynn signed with Seattle after four years as Aaron Rodgers’ backup in Green Bay and two stats-pushed begins, including a 480-yard, six-landing performance within the 2011 season finale.

Flynn has made $14.5 million from the Seahawks and Raiders mixed the previous two seasons for a complete of 1 start.

Mike McCarthy, Flynn’s former head coach in Green Bay, is shocked things haven’t labored out for the quarterback.

Cary Edmondson/USA TODAY Sports activitiesMatt Flynn was sacked seven instances against the Redskins in Week four, his solely begin this season for the Raiders after being acquired in a commerce.

“I undoubtedly am shocked because when his alternative got here I obviously gave him a really excessive suggestion,” McCarthy said. “Injuries and all the several types of things, quarterback competition in each places, a whole lot of components go into it.

“I haven’t watched the film of Matt so I actually can’t even provide you with an educated or knowledgeable opinion on how precisely he did play, but on a private degree I’m very fond of Matt Flynn, he was glorious in his time here and I wish him the most effective of luck.”

Pat White, a second-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2009, is about to visit the Raiders on Tuesday, together with David Carr, the top pick of the 2002 draft, sources said.

“We’ll look,” Allen said, when requested the place the Raiders go from right here. “We’ll always be wanting by way of what’s on the market. Clearly right now we have got Matt McGloin, who’s on the roster, and we’ve got Tyler Wilson, who’s on the apply squad, and we feel good about these two guys.

Tyler Wilson doesn’t get claimed by any team on waivers, gets added to Raiders’ practice squad

(USA Immediately Sports Photos)

Not one NFL group thought the Oakland Raiders made a mistake in cutting quarterback Tyler Wilson.

He was once a prime prospect at quarterback, however that looks as if ages in the past. Despite having a contract that might be very gentle for a young NFL quarterback, not one crew claimed Wilson on waivers. Not the Jaguars. Not the Packers, who didn’t maintain one backup quarterback that played for them in preseason. Not the Payments, who might need to contemplate beginning undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel this week due to injury.

Wilson, a fourth-round decide and the best choose within the 2013 draft who was cut, signed back with the Raiders’ observe squad. He’ll have completely no strain there to try to get his NFL profession going.

What went flawed with Wilson? He didn’t have a great senior season at Arkansas, but that appeared on account of a terrible teaching situation. Maybe Arkansas’ problems have been partially because of Wilson.

He was touted as a minicamp sensation (which exhibits what glowing reports from minicamps are price) and a attainable starter for the Raiders a pair months ago, but it seems he simply couldn’t choose up the offense.

“Properly, I believe he’s bought the bodily tools,” Allen stated, based on the San Francisco Chronicle. “I think he’s behind from a psychological part of the game, and that’s the place he’s obtained to proceed to work to improve.”

Wilson has time to choose up the offense on the practice squad. The Raiders have Terrelle Pryor, Matt Flynn and undrafted rookie Matt McGloin at quarterback. One training camp and preseason is not enough time to make a final decision on any mid-round choose in the NFL.

But every NFL crew had an opportunity to take a shot to seize Wilson and passed. Wilson has a lot to prove before he can make anyone remorse that call.

Oakland Raiders keep four quarterbacks and two punters on 53-man roster

(USA At the moment Sports Images)

Maybe they’re visionaries. Thinkers so outside the field that we won’t even comprehend their brilliance.

Or maybe the Raiders just aren’t good.

On Saturday, they minimize their roster all the way down to the league-mandated fifty three males and came up with some attention-grabbing math. They didn’t answer no less than two coaching-camp battles for now, in deciding to keep two punters — Chris Kluwe and Marquette King — and 4 quarterbacks on the roster.

The roster spots of Matt Flynn and Terrelle Pryor seemed set, as certainly one of them ostensibly must begin. But the Raiders gave the impression to be admitting their very own mistake by preserving each fourth-spherical quarterback Tyler Wilson and undrafted Matt McGloin. Wilson fell to fourth behind McGloin, who seemed like he ought to have been drafted. Wilson did not.

It’s simply too straightforward now to select on the Raiders, who clearly have some extra strikes to make earlier than they head to Indianapolis for subsequent Sunday’s recreation towards the Colts. They probably hope to trade one of many punters, seemingly the older Kluwe, to a playoff contender. However with a surplus of respectable punters out there — headlined by ex-Patriot Zoltan Mesko — that seems fairly tough.

But the bigger statement about four quarterbacks and two punters is that the group at present has six roster spots for 2 positions that you typically can only function certainly one of at a time on the field. (Although we’d love to see some two-punter motion — some way, someway.) GM Reggie McKenzie’s job is still very much lodged in the throes of great rebuilding, with terrible depth and never superb high-shelf talent, either.

Brace yourselves, Raiders fans. This may be one attempting season. Unless you are a severe punting aficionado.

Oakland Raiders cut QB Tyler Wilson, their fourth-round pick in this year’s draft

(USA Right this moment Sports Pictures)

The Raiders cannot afford to blow draft picks. They’re in the course of the deepest rebuilding challenge within the league, and with so much dead cap space, they wanted to hit on draft picks.

Instead, they’ve already minimize a fourth-spherical decide earlier than he even performs an everyday-season recreation.

Quarterback Tyler Wilson’s drop is shocking. Before he came back for his closing season at Arkansas he was thought of a potential high 10 NFL draft pick. He struggled as a senior, fell to the fourth spherical and now he’s out of a job after the lowly Raiders cut him. Pro Football Speak was the primary to report that news.

The idea to take a shot on a quarterback within the fourth spherical was good for the Raiders. However Wilson was so dangerous he’s on the lookout for a job already.

Despite being praised throughout minicamps (youngsters, let’s bear in mind this subsequent year when observers are going loopy over rookies in meaningless practices), Wilson plummeted rapidly in coaching camp. He was effectively behind undrafted Matt McGloin in the preseason.

The Raiders’ resolution to cut him now means they do not suppose he can be salvaged. This is a workforce that entered Sunday with two punters on the roster (they did cut Chris Kluwe Sunday afternoon to get down to 1). And no clear quarterback of the future both. The Raiders, who aren’t going to make the playoffs this yr anyway, could afford to use a roster spot on a fourth-spherical pick at quarterback if they thought there was any probability Wilson could develop into a competent player. By slicing Wilson now, they’re announcing they think he has absolutely no future as a NFL quarterback. Or they’d don’t have any problem retaining him around to develop. It’s a really unhealthy mistake by basic supervisor Reggie McKenzie. Wilson was the best choose in the 2013 draft cut over the weekend. Seahawks receiver Chris Harper was the only different fourth-spherical decide lower.

Perhaps the Raiders didn’t use him proper and another staff can turn him round. He has to have some expertise to justify that 2012 draft hype, which got here earlier than he made the regrettable resolution to return again for one more 12 months (how might he have identified Bobby Petrino would sink Arkansas’ season together with his idiocy?).

But if you cannot make the Raiders, the one crew that was still auditioning gamers in Week four to determine a beginning quarterback, that’s a horrible sign for Wilson’s NFL future.

Terrelle Pryor getting first-team reps for Oakland Raiders with Matt Flynn ailing

(USA Immediately Sports activities Images)

Call it an issue, if you’d like.

Following a productive Friday night time in opposition to the Bears, there has been some clamoring amongst Oakland Raiders fans to start out Terrelle Pryor over Matt Flynn, with the frequent reprise of “why not?”

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”20″]

Head coach Dennis Allen admitted that the group must consider giving Pryor a protracted look. But the Raiders are actually giving Pryor first-crew reps in observe and will start him within the preseason finale towards the Seattle Seahawks with once-presumed starter Matt Flynn suffering from a little bit of arm fatigue.

This has to really feel like a horrible case of déja vu for Flynn, who allowed Russell Wilson to usurp the starting position for the Seahawks final preseason and now could be on the verge of relinquishing it in Oakland.

Certainly, the elbow might heal up — if indeed Flynn is actually all that damage — in time for the Raiders’ regular-season opener at Indianapolis. However one other energizing efficiency on Thursday might elevate Pryor no matter Flynn’s well being.

D.J. Hayden played and played pretty well in Oakland Raiders debut

(USA Right now Sports activities Photos) They are saying preseason games are unhealthy entertainment and not worth the exorbitant regular-season ticket costs the groups charge for video games that do not depend, and there’s a ton of evidence backing that up.

But typically these video games actually mean one thing to the men taking part in in them.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”20″]

Case in point: Raiders cornerback D.J. Hayden. He most likely needs to be dead. The damage he suffered final fall easily may have killed him. What appeared to be a routine hit on the follow subject on the University of Houston turned out to be a freak critical damage, struggling a torn vein near his heart.

The fact that Hayden lived is a miracle. The actual fact he went in the first spherical of April’s draft was astounding. And the truth that he was on the sphere Friday night in a so-called meaningless preseason sport against the Bears is cause is celebrate.

The No. 12 total choose within the draft made his preseason debut, beginning at proper corner, and played pretty properly. On his first snap, he lined up reverse Brandon Marshall. How’s that for an early check?

It was clear the Bears were testing Hayden on their first drive, and he whiffed on a deal with on Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery on a 3rd-and-1 play that ended up a 22-yard gain. However Hayden made up for it later in the series, breaking up a cross thrown to Marshall that was tipped and nearly intercepted.

Hayden struggled to disengage on blocks a number of times, was giving his receivers fairly huge cushions and seemed a bit small on the market compared to the Bears’ big receivers, tight ends and backs. But he additionally regarded fearless, playing on defense and particular groups within the first half, with the primary real football contact he has incurred since the close to-deadly accident final fall.

That in and of itself is a major victory in what was an otherwise horrible showing by the Raiders’ first-teamers, falling down 24-zero within the first 20 minutes of the game before Terrell Pryor made a number of circus performs within the second half. Raiders fans can be pleased with their brave first-round choose for his effort on Friday, even when a lot of the rest of the crew appeared pretty depressing.

Raiders sign kicker Sebastian Janikowski to four-year contract extension

Sebastian Janikowski signed a four-yr extension (USA At present Sports Photos)

Oakland Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski has signed a 4-12 months contract extension, normal manager Reggie McKenzie introduced on Friday.

According to Scott Bair of CSN Bay Space, the extension is value slightly below $19 million with $eight million guaranteed and paid in the first two seasons.

Janikowski, 35, was scheduled to earn $3.eight million in base wage with as much as $200,000 in incentives tied to kickoffs and area goals. Earlier than Friday’s extension, Janikowski’s $5.05 million cap quantity was the second-largest among the Raiders’ active contracts.

According to the NFLPA public database, the Raiders had been $5,558,580 under their adjusted cap variety of $126.683 million for the 2013 season.

The Raiders selected Janikowski with the seventeenth general pick within the 2000 NFL draft out of Florida State, where the Poland native was a two-time winner of the Lou Groza award. Over his 14-yr careerin the NFL, “SeaBass” is 324-of-402 on area objective attempts and his 1,398 points rank twenty fourth in NFL history. Janikowski tied the NFL file for longest field goal (63 yards) and has probably the most 60+ yard area goals in NFL historical past (two).

Janikowski, a 2011 Pro Bowler, is coming off what was arguably his best season in the NFL, connecting on 31-of-34 subject goal attempts (ninety one.2 p.c) with all three of his missed makes an attempt coming from past 50 yards.

Oakland Raiders linebacker Kaluka Maiava charged with assault

(USA Today Sports Images) It took about four months, but Oakland Raiders linebacker Kaluka Maiava’s assault charges stemming from an incident in Hawaii were finally uncovered.

Just add it to the list of NFL player (and front office) off-field trouble this offseason.

Maiava and his brother Ilima are accused of “beating up two men,” the Associated Press reported. They are both charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, and fourth-degree criminal property damage, a petty misdemeanor, the AP said.

The venue of the fight? Life’s a Beach restaurant and bar in Kihei.

The alleged incident came on March 17, four days after Maiava signed three-year, $6 million deal with the Raiders. He is a candidate to start at linebacker in Oakland’s revamped defense.

The AP reported Maiava and his brother are scheduled to be arraigned in Wailuku District Court on July 25, the same day Oakland’s training camp begins.

Oakland Raiders salary cap outlook: Lamarr Houston is a key free agent in 2014

Darren McFadden has the largest base salary on the Raiders (USA Today Sports Images)

The “Shutdown Countdown” is underway. In addition to previewing each team, “Shutdown Corner” will be taking a brief look at each team’s salary cap situation heading into the 2013 season and beyond. We begin the series with the Oakland Raiders.

2013 Adjusted Cap Number: $126.683 million (16th-highest adjusted cap figure in the NFL)

2013 Cap Room Remaining: $7.628 million (16th-most available cap space, as of July 4). The Raiders have yet to sign first-round cornerback D.J. Hayden, second-round offensive tackle Menelik Watson and fourth-round quarterback Tyler Wilson. Those three draft choices will have first-year cap numbers totaling $3,266,552 and will have cap numbers large enough to crack the “Top 51″ contracts that count against the salary cap prior to the start of the regular season. Those deals will replace contracts totaling $1.44 million in cap space, therefore, the Raiders will have $5.8 million in cap space once those three rookie contracts have been signed.

[Related: Will short-term pain lead to long-term gains for Raiders?]

Biggest Bargain: Stefen Wisniewski is one of the more underrated centers in the league. The 2011 second-round pick out of Penn State has been durable, playing in 100 percent of the Raiders’ snaps as a rookie and 93.3 percent of the snaps last season. Wisniewski had just four accepted penalties in 2012 (three holding calls, one false start) and is exceptional in pass protection. Wisniewski will earn $750,946 in base salary this season with a $1.128 million cap figure, which is about 30 percent of what Samson Satele (the player Wisniewski replaced at center in Oakland) will cost the Indianapolis Colts in both cash and cap space this season.

Potential Camp Casualty: The Raiders have over $50 million in “dead” money on their 2013 salary cap as most of the cuts and restructures took place earlier this offseason. Only two players —running back Darren McFadden and kicker Sebastien Janikowski — have base salaries exceeding $2 million. Janikowski is safe, but the same cannot be said for McFadden. The No. 4 pick of the 2008 NFL draft has had durability issues, failing to play more than 13 games in a single season and missing an average of 4.6 games per year. McFadden is coming off a 2012 season where he averaged just 3.3 yards per carry, scored two touchdowns and was dead last among qualifying running backs in Football Outsiders’ DYAR (Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement) metric, with his -155 DYAR being the lowest figure among regular running backs since Marcel Shipp’s -168 DYAR during the 2005 season. McFadden is arguably the Raiders’ most talented player and the team does not have much depth at the running back position, two factors that will likely keep him in Silver & Black this season. However, there are few could successfully argue that McFadden’s production has or will match his $5.856 million base salary (which ranks fourth among NFL running backs and will become fully guaranteed in Week 1) or his $9.685 million cap figure (third-highest among NFL running backs), two figures that could make him vulnerable when the team is finalizing its opening week roster.

Lamarr Houston (No. 99) will be a free agent in 2014 (USA Today Sports Images)

Looming Contract Issue: Many of the projected starters on the Raiders are not signed for the 2014 season. McFadden, Janikowski, Jared Veldheer, Marcel Reece, Jacoby Ford, Pat Sims, Vance Walker and Mike Jenkins will be unrestricted free agents, but no issue looms larger than defensive end Lamarr Houston, who is entering the fourth and final season of his rookie contract. Houston had five sacks as a rookie and tied for the team lead with four sacks during a 2012 season that saw him lead the Raiders with 12 tackles for a loss and 13 quarterback hits. If Houston can build off of his performance last season, he will earn a considerable raise over the $660,000 ($630,000 base salary plus a $30,000 workout bonus) he is slated to make in 2013.

Long-Term Cash/Cap Outlook: Around half of the Raiders’ 90-man roster is unsigned for the 2014 season, including many key starters, so it comes as no surprise that the team has a league-low $58.3 million in salary cap commitments for next season. Some of that ($6.2 million) is comprised of “dead” money from the “post-June 1″ designated release of safety Michael Huff that allowed the team to split his cap hit over the 2013 and 2014 seasons. In terms of cash, the Raiders have only $41.5 million committed to 2014, which is also a league-low.
