WASHINGTON – The College Athletes Players Association is criticizing Northwestern University's argument for overturning a ruling that would allow the school's football players to unionize.
Northwestern is appealing a ruling by a regional director of the National Labor Relations Board who said that the school's football players are employees under federal law and thus entitled to unionize.
CAPA says Northwestern "has not established grounds for review of the regional director's factfinding." Wednesday's filing also attacks other parts of the appeal.
The players are set to vote by secret ballot April 25 on whether to form a union. CAPA would represent them.
The Evanston, Ill.-based university argues in the appeal that its athletic program "is fully integrated with its academic mission, and that it treats its athletes as students first."

They were shredding a showing Cavs team that apparently had both internal and external problems. This isn’t the Lakers if you’re used to either.

Ayanbadejo played for that Bears in Super Bowl XLI after the 2006 time of year and the Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII last season, but he'd not uncover which year the occurrence took place.
"I'm not going to say which usually Super Bowl it was, yet I just remember getting off the elevator one night — it was early on in the [Super Bowl] week, simply to start the particular week away – and all sorts of the unexpected I just got hit on the head along with fumes associated with marijuana within the entire flooring of the resort that the team was keeping on… I really could just imagine there was a few young guys just toking up in more compared to one room. "
Ayanbadejo, who else did not play in the NFL this season, said he was surprised his teammates would use cannabis days before the Super Bowl.
"I was like, 'Man this is the 7 days of the Super Bowl plus you're simply going in? '" Ayanbadejo mentioned. "So i quickly was searching, and I'm like 'OK, where will be the security? ' I looked and for several reason we all didn't possess regular law enforcement. Coach was smart sufficient to have rent-a-cops on our flooring instead of regular police such as we usually do. "
Marijuana has been a subject of discussion this week since the Super Dish features 2 teams from states to recently legalize the drug for leisure use.
Medicinal marijuana is lawful in twenty states as well as the District associated with Columbia, plus Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll agreed with the notion that the NFL should consider allowing players to use cannabis for medicinal purposes.

"Regardless of what other stigmas might be involved, we have to do this because the planet of medicine is doing this. "
Marijuana continues to be on the NFL's banned elements list, plus two people of the Seahawks secondary — cornerbacks Brandon Browner plus Walter Thurmond – possess served drug suspensions this year. Browner's suspension is continuing.
Kain Colter displayed APU on his uniform to draw attention to the NCPA movement.
According to ESPN's Outside the Lines, Ramogi Huma, president of the National College Players Association, filed a petition in Chicago on behalf of the players with the National Labor Relations Board.
If the group is certified by the NLRB, it will be called the College Athletes Players Association (CAPA). Huma, Colter and former UMass basketball player Luke Bonner created the group with support from the United Steelworkers.More details, via OTL:
"This is about finally giving college athletes a seat at the table, " said Huma, a former UCLA linebacker, who created the NCPA as an advocacy group in 2001. "Athletes deserve an equal voice when it comes to their physical, academic and financial protections. "
Huma told "Outside The Lines" that the move to unionize players at Northwestern started with quarterback Kain Colter, who reached out to him last spring and asked for help in giving athletes representation in their effort to improve the conditions under which they play NCAA sports. Colter became a leading voice in regular NCPA-organized conference calls among players from around the country.
Huma, Colter and the NCPA organized the "All Players United" movement in the 2013 season that resulted in several players from Northwestern, Georgia and Georgia Tech displaying #APU on their uniforms.
Huma told OTL that the goals of CAPA will be the same as the NCPA; looking for representation in the decision-making process of college athletics to improve conditions for student-athletes. The group has advocated for multi-year scholarships and has called for guaranteed scholarships for players who can no longer compete due to injury or medical issues.
"A lot of people will think this is all about money; it's not, " Colter told the
on Tuesday morning. "We're asking for a seat at the table to get our voice heard. "
Colter to Trib on unionizing: “We're not expecting a decision to be made right away. It might.. go all the way to the Supreme Court. ”

Leaders of the NCPA and CAPA will hold a press conference Tuesday in downtown Chicago to discuss the petition and unionization efforts.
According to NCPAnow. org, the group has 11 specific goals.
1. Minimize college athletes' brain trauma risks.
2. Raise the scholarship amount.
3. Prevent players from being stuck paying sports-related medical expenses.
4. Increase graduation rates.
5. Protect educational opportunities for student-athletes in good standing.
6. Prohibit universities from using a permanent injury suffered during athletics as a reason to reduce/eliminate a scholarship.
7. Establish and enforce uniform safety guidelines in all sports to help prevent serious injuries and avoidable deaths.
8. Eliminate restrictions on legitimate employment and players ability to directly benefit from commercial opportunities.
9. Prohibit the punishment of college athletes that have not committed a violation.
10. Guarantee that college athletes are granted an athletic release from their university if they wish to transfer schools.
11. Allow college athletes of all sports the ability to transfer schools one time without punishment.
Previously, the NCPA flew a banner over the Rose Bowl before the BCS National Championship game that read "All Players United for Concussion Reform. Wake Up NCAA! "
The NCAA responded Tuesday, in a statement from Donald Remy, chief legal officer: "This union-backed attempt to turn student-athletes into employees undermines the purpose of college: an education. Student-athletes are not employees, and their participation in college sports is voluntary. We stand for all student-athletes, not just those the unions want to professionalize.
"Many student athletes are provided scholarships and many other benefits for their participation. There is no employment relationship between the NCAA, its affiliated institutions or student-athletes.
"Student-athletes are not employees within any definition of the National Labor Relations Act or the Fair Labor Standards Act. We are confident the National Labor Relations Board will find in our favor, as there is no right to organize student-athletes. "
Northwestern subsequently issued its own statement, saying in part: "We are pleased to note that the Northwestern students involved in this effort emphasized that they are not unhappy with the University, the football program or their treatment here, but are raising the concerns because of the importance of these issues nationally.
"Northwestern believes that our student-athletes are not employees and collective bargaining is therefore not the appropriate method to address these concerns. However, we agree that the health and academic issues being raised by our student-athletes and others are important ones that deserve further consideration. "
After revealing to the world he is gay, Thomas Hitzlsperger hopes players will one day feel comfortable disclosing their sexuality without the shelter of retirement.
Hitzlsperger believes football is ready for gay players
Former Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has told Sky that gay footballers would be crazy to come out during their careers.
Jens Lehmann played alongside Thomas Hitzlsperger for Germany and Stuttgart. In September 2012, a footballer in the Bundesliga had given an anonymous interview to Fluter in which he said he and several other players in Germany were gay but added: “I would not be safe anymore if my sexuality was made public. ”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel responded by insisting players should not be afraid to come out and, last month, Thomas Hitzlsperger became the first German footballer to do so, but only after having retired in September.
Lehmann, who played alongside Hitzlsperger for Stuttgart and Germany, said that it would be inadvisable for an active player to follow suit.
“Anyone doing that would be nuts, ” the former Arsenal keeper said during a talk show. “You can’t foresee what would happen. You can’t advise anyone to do so – they would no longer have fun playing football. ”
Asked how he would have found it had he known Hitzlsperger – nicknamed “Der Hammer” – was gay during their time as teammates, Lehmann said: “Strange, I think. You shower together every day, and there are times when it would be difficult.
“But Thomas Hitzlsperger is a player who never caused anyone to think that there is something – firstly because he is very intelligent and, secondly, because of his style of play. ”
Former England international Graeme Le Saux wrote in his autobiography that, despite being heterosexual, taunts from fans, opposition players and even his own teammates over his sexuality almost ruined his career. LA Galaxy midfielder Robbie Rogers, who came out in February 2013, told the BBC last year that, after his experience of playing for Leeds, he thinks it would be difficult for a gay player in the UK.
Lehmann feels that it is inevitable that a gay player would be victimised.
“I know for sure that there would have been a few players, be it opponents or others in the dressing room, who would have permanently made jokes, ” Lehmann said. “It’s not like there are 25 intellectuals who discuss whether someone’s gay or not.
“Football is a man’s sport, and you don’t have to think a lot, and you also can’t control the fans in the stadiums. As a [gay player], should you have to put up with all that? ”
The 44-year-old’s suggestion that players should keep their homosexuality a secret caused some controversy in Germany, with the Stuttgarter Nachrichten headlining its article: “Lehmann talks himself into trouble. ” The German football monthly 11 Freunde described Lehmann’s statements as “non-reflective” of the public mood.
During the same Sky show, the president of the German Football Association (DFB), Wolfgang Niersbach, spoke of his hope for a potential co-operation with Hitzlsperger in the fight against homophobia in football.
“He has said that he will be at the Germany vs. Chile game in March, ” Niersbach said. “We will talk to him and see if and how we can involve him in it. ”
An ESPN “Outside the Traces” investigation has revealed that the College of Missouri didn't alert authorities concerning the allegations from Sasha Menu Courey, a member of the swim staff who later committed suicide, that she was sexually assaulted by a Mizzou football player (or gamers).
Among the many hundreds of pages of documents gathered by Missouri directors in late 2012 in response to a information request was a December 2010 online chat transcript between Menu Courey and a rape disaster counselor that had been saved in Menu Courey’s college electronic mail folder. Within the transcript, the previous high swim recruit describes an assault after having consensual intercourse with an unidentified man. Another doc discovered by a college hospital administrator exhibits Menu Courey had instructed a campus nurse and doctor in 2011 that she had been raped by a football player in February 2010.
Menu Courey dedicated suicide in June 2011, about 16 months after the alleged assault. The incident has not been reported to campus police, University of Missouri Police Capt. Brian Weimer said Thursday. Metropolis police and the Boone County prosecutor’s workplace say in addition they have not obtained any reviews.
An athletic division spokesman denied that anybody on the coaching staff or within the administration had information of the allegations earlier than Menu Courey dedicated suicide. Rolandis Woodland, a former Tigers receiver, says within the article that Menu Courey sent him video of the assault before her loss of life, that it exhibits three gamers on the workforce participating in it whereas the alleged sufferer was intoxicated, and that the tape was inadvertently misplaced by one of the former receiver’s family members.
In a separate incident during the same time interval at the college, standout operating back Derrick Washington was convicted of sexually assaulting a tutor in 2010.
The OTL investigation also serves as a reminder about the case of Lizzy Seeberg. Ms. Seeberg, a former scholar at St. Mary’s University, alleged that she was sexually assaulted by a Notre Dame football player, who was not interviewed by investigators till several days after Ms. Seeberg committed suicide.
Soccer followers in America have gained a fame as a slightly obnoxious bunch of know-it-alls. As an example, run into a soccer fan at a bar and ask them a simple query and infrequently they’ll go on-and-on in an attempt to show you just how a lot they learn about their beloved sport. Belief me: I’m speaking from experience on each side of the equation.
This video from TalkSport taken outdoors Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge is a superb send-up of soccer fans’ know-it-all tendencies. Granted it zings English Chelsea fans, but I do think there’s one American within the combine. At no point throughout the interview do any of the folks interviewed notice “Liam Ying,” “Win Nowt,” “Win Ding Youp” aren’t real. It’s funny to watch the fans speak about a faux players tempo or that they watch a whole lot of the Dutch League.
Try it subsequent time you run into an annoying soccer fan. I wager it works.
You may forgive Chelsea fans, a little bit, for pondering each participant the reporter mentioned to them is actual. The membership’s new coverage seems to be buying up any young player with a modicum of talent after which farming them out on loan. Odds are most of the guys in the picture below will never play a significant minute at Stamford Bridge — wearing a blue shirt at the least.
On Wednesday, the Poker Players Alliance announced that the federal authorities and Garden Metropolis Group — the firm it hired to process all the Full Tilt Poker claims — are simply “weeks away” from finally putting the money into the fingers of victims.
In response to studies, at the very least some of the money might be made by ACH deposit.
“I spoke with [Asset Forfeiture and Cash Laundering Section/Division of Justice] employees in the present day and they knowledgeable me that they've authorized roughly 30,000 undisputed participant claims,” John Pappas, PPA’s govt director, mentioned in a statement Wednesday.
“Backyard City ought to be making a formal announcement on its web site, fulltiltpokerclaims.com, throughout the next 24 hours. Gamers with undisputed claims must be looking for an e-mail from Backyard City Group throughout the next few weeks with directions on how to receive their cost.”
The PPA added in a Tweet that the money quantities to $82 million, which is round half of what was stolen from players by the positioning whereas below prior ownership. As of late Full Tilt Poker is beneath the identical umbrella of ownership as business-main PokerStars.
The information is good for these with undisputed claims, but there are in fact individuals who disputed the quantity GCG mentioned they have been owed. No phrase on what's next for these gamers.
More than one million potential victims of Full Tilt Poker had been identified within the initial processing of the data. The positioning shut down in 2011.
As soon as a dominant participant within the U.S. market, Full Tilt was engulfed in the Black Friday indictments within the spring of 2011. Later the Division of Justice alleged that the firm was working as a Ponzi scheme and paying its homeowners handsomely with the funds of players. All the former owners have settled their respective cases with the feds.
The information from the PPA comes after Backyard Metropolis Group originally mentioned that the money outs would happen by Mar. 31, 2014. In other words, issues are shifting ahead of schedule.
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — He reached 10, 500 rushing yards faster compared to all but two running back in NFL history. this individual ran for more yards in a season than all but 1. He racked up a lot more yards in a game compared to anyone else has ever carried out.yet Adrian Peterson has never used a handoff in the extremely Bowl. His counterparts around the NFL would like to see that modify.
within ESPN's NFL Nation private, an anonymous survey of more than 320 players around the little league, players voted the mn Vikings running back the player they would most like to see in a Super Bowl who hasn't been there yet.
Peterson, who received league MVP honors in 2012, claimed 18 percent of the total ballot with fifty nine votes, three more than altlanta ga Falcons tight end tony a2z Gonzalez. Eighty-eight players obtained at least one vote."That's pretty awesome, " Peterson said. "It feels good. I guess guys are able to see the passion that I play with, the desire I play with, and they respect it enough to make that type of statement.
"It states a lot, and it means a lot. "
Peterson came tantalizingly close to reaching the Super Bowl in the 2009 season, when the Vikings faced the New Orleans new orleans saints in the NFC Championship sport. He scored three times, yet his botched handoff led to Brett Favre's fumble at the Saints' 4-yard line in the second quarter and the Vikings went on to lose in overtime."I don't think we watched [the Super Bowl that year], inch Peterson said. "We offered that one away. We offered a championship away. the particular NFC Championship Game has been pretty much the Super dish that year.
"Not to take something away from the Colts [who lost to the Saints in the Super Bowl] – that was a good team – but just how it balanced out, nor one of us was a great matchup they wanted to observe in the Super Bowl. That was a tough one. "
This year noticeable the fourth time in seven months that Peterson and the Vikings missed the postseason. Each year, he said, it hurts a little more not to be in the playoffs. Would he wants to go somewhere else if the Vikings don't seem to be on the road to a championship?
"I try to stay in stride with what's going on plus play my cards because they're dealt to me, inch he said. "I've usually said I would love to complete here, with the Vikings, therefore I'll just stick with that will. "
A-Rod's union-mates do not want him around any longer.
According to Jeff Passan and Tim Brown associated with Yahoo! Sports, several partnership members – Rodriguez's other players – asked regardless of whether he could be expelled from the MLBPA following the lawsuit. Here are some information:
On a conference call associated with perhaps 40 players plus board members held january. 13 from 4: thirty p. m. to 6 g. m., outraged union users repeatedly requested that Rodriguez be expelled, sources stated. Following a roll call associated with players present on the line, according to one participant and an additional familiar with the call, the first gamer to speak asked bluntly: Can we kick him out of the partnership?
recommended by union leadership that was not possible, more players however expressed the same opinion. Not a single member defended Rodriguez, one player said, in a forum where there are frequent arguments.
"That's what everyone was thinking, inch the player said. "We wanted to get on this call and not let him back. [To say,] ‘This is our own game and we don't would like you in it. '"
A-Rod included MLBPA in the match claiming the union "completely abdicated its responsibility" in order to him. Late union main Michael Weiner was also charged of failing to properly symbolize A-Rod. It was harsh yet legally necessary – Rodriguez had zero chance of getting the ruling overturned in a federal government court without claiming the particular union didn't help your pet during his appeal listening to.
But , naturally, members of the partnership felt betrayed following the legal action. A-Rod had turned on their fellow players.
"It's past disappointment, " said a player involved in union leadership who was on the conference call. "What brought it beyond dissatisfaction was the fact he's your house the union. Guys realize people make bad choices, they lie when they may embarrassed or trying to prevent punishment. Those are human being qualities. Guys understand. But what made guys incensed will be he would bring a match against the union. "
"When he will get up to bat, you can strike him and hit your pet hard, " one gamer on the conference call informed Yahoo Sports. "That's exactly what I'd do. He sued us. Jhonny Peralta plus Nelson Cruz screwed up. You know what? They owned up to this. They took their medication.
inch[Rodriguez] needs to be scared of coming back and facing individuals he sued. If this individual can't fear the difficulty of getting kicked out or not being included, he's going to be forced out. "
From what I understand, a federal judge is very unlikely to overturn A-Rod's suspension. They tend to stay out of collectively bargained matters that have already gone through the proper stations, in this case a hearing prior to a three-person arbitration screen. Rodriguez has said the prohibit "could be a big favor" at this point of his profession because it would allow his entire body to rest, and he also stated to have received support "not just from my Yankees teammates, but also players from other teams, retired players, Hall of Fame players and lots of good individuals, owners of other groups. ”
Personally, I don't believe A-Rod will ever play again and maybe I'm just naive. There will still be $61 million remaining on his contract from 2015-17 following the suspension, but he will be months away from their 40th birthday by then. He will have also played only forty-four games in the previous 30 weeks by time opening day time 2015 rolls around. I think the particular Yankees will simply release your pet after the suspension and no group will bother signing your pet afterward.
Either way, it's clear Rodriguez is no longer wanted in the game. not really by his peers, not really by the league and not by many fans.
