MLB Prediction World Series Preview & Pick – Cardinals vs. Red Sox

MLB Prediction World Series Preview & Pick – Cardinals vs. Red Sox

World Series- St. Louis Cardinals vs. Boston Red Sox

Best-of-Seven: Game 1 10/23- 8:07PM EST

Adam Wainwright (2-1, 1.57 ERA) vs. Jon Lester (2-1, 2.33 ERA)

All the hard work in Spring Training, the regular season and nail-biting postseason baseball has brought these two teams to where every team fights for to be on Opening day… the World Series!

Wednesday night at Fenway Park is where it all begins for the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox as the play for the right to be crowned World Series Champions.

The Cardinals and Red Sox are no strangers to October baseball as St. Louis is shooting for their second title in three years and third in eight years. For the Boston, they are aiming for their third crown in 10 years.

The Redbirds and BoSox met in the 2004 World Series that saw Boston sweep and win their first title in 86-very-long years.

Boston’s David ‘Big Papi’ Ortiz was part of that magical Red Sox team of 2004 that won it all.

On the other end, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny was the St. Louis catcher of that 2004 team that suffered the sweep. As was rookie back-up catcher back then, Yadier Molina, who many consider the best catcher in the game now.

Some of us have some pretty bad memories of being here in 2004, and we’re looking to kind of right that ship,” said Matheny.

It’s different to play here overall. Playing defense, offense, pitching. It’s different, but at the same time it’s fun,” Molina said.

One Cardinal, who will be anxious to get back to playing baseball will be Allen Craig, who hasn’t played ball since Sept. 4 because of a sprained left foot.

I feel like I’m in a good spot,” Craig says, who will be the Cardinals’ designated hitter.

Another player looking to make an impact will be 2011 World Series MVP David Freese, who watched the Red Sox sweep of ’04 on TV.

I remember the come backer that ended it. The sweep. You don’t expect a World Series to end in four games,” said Freese.

This will also be the first meeting for these two teams since 2008.

It will exciting to see some unfamiliar faces,” said Red Sox Jacoby Ellsbury. “Obviously, I’m aware of the history of the two teams. Once the first pitch happens, all that goes out the window.”

NLCS rookie MVP Michael Wacha (3-0, 0.43) will face veteran John Lackey (2-0, 3.00 ERA) in Game 2 on Thursday.

Wacha knows the challenges pitchers face when dealing with Fenway Park.

A ballgame can change with one swing of the bat in this ballpark,” said Wacha. “It’s pretty crazy. Crazy dimensions, that’s for sure.”

Boston is listed as the slim favorite, however Cardinals’ pitching will be the key to winning it all, as the Red Sox have the stronger bats. Two good baseball teams that tied for the most wins in the majors.

So for my MLB Prediction of the World series

NFL Thursday Night Preview: San Francisco 49ers vs St. Louis Rams

By Mario Martinez-Wonder Punter

San Francisco 49ers @ St. Louis Rams 9/26 8:25PM EST

Line: SF -3.0

Over/Under: 42.0

SSThis Thursday night, the disappointing to this point San Francisco 49ers (1-2) travel into St. Louis, to take on a Ram team (1-2) who are also struggling on both ends of the football. At stake, is both teams hoping to avoid their third straight loss of the early season, and keep pace with the 3-0 Seattle Seahawks within the NFC West division.

Get Live Odds Here

While much expectation has not been placed on the Rams this season, the 49ers are facing the pressure of critics everywhere as they have been favored to return to the Super Bowl for a second straight year. Both teams are coming off horrible games from last Sunday, the Rams losing to the Dallas Cowboys 31-7, and the 49ers getting spanked on their own turf against the Indianapolis Colts 27-7.

Injuries have taken their toll on the 49ers to this point, greatly affecting their play on both sides of the football the last two games. The 49ers seemed to have picked up from last season where they put 34 points on the board against the Green Bay Packers on opening day. However, since that first win, they have been outscored 56-10 by Seattle and Indianapolis, and second year QB Colin Kaepernick has struggled to regain his form that took the league by storm last year.

Now, with All Pro outside linebacker Aldon Smith being placed on the non-football injury list Monday due to substance abuse issues, he will enter rehab and there is no timetable on his return to the field. Other key injuries for the Niners include linebacker Patrick Willis (groin) and defensive back Nnamdi Asomugha (leg). On the offensive side of the ball, tight end Vernon Davis (hamstring) could miss his second straight game.

The Rams on the other hand, just seem to not be able to stay consistent, and falling behind early, makes it that much more of a struggle to win ball games. They rallied from 11 points down to beat the Arizona Cardinals, but could not relive the magic against the Atlanta Falcons after trailing by 21 points. Against the Cowboys, they were never in it from the get go, getting blown out at Dallas.

The division rivals San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams each played each other twice last year, with the Rams winning 16-13 in overtime at home, and both teams playing to a 24-24 tie in San Francisco.

However, despite what problems, both on and off the field the San Francisco 49ers have going in to play the St. Louis Rams on Thursday night, I like their chances, and see the Niners (-3) pulling out a victory on the road.

Dodgers clinch NL West, complete worst-to-first turnaround

(Getty Pictures)

Much just like the season of the 2013 Los Angeles Dodgers, their NL West-clinching victory on Thursday required them to claw back. But these Dodgers are nothing if not resilient, a high quality they’ve shown in their worst-to-first turnaround, they usually beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6.

It is the Dodgers’ first NL West crown since 2009, they usually’re the first group this season to clinch a playoff spot. Not unhealthy for a staff that was in last place in June.

Hanley Ramirez, in the lineup for less than the second time within the last seven days, put the Dodgers forward 3-zero with a three-run homer within the third inning, then the Diamondbacks roared back with a six-run third inning off Dodgers starter Ricky Nolasco. The Dodgers — particularly Ramirez — wouldn’t be denied and crept back. Ramirez hit another homer within the seventh to tie the game at 6, a part of his 4-for-5, four RBI day.

Then, within the eighth inning, Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis had the clutch hit of the day, sending a Josh Collmenter pitch into the left field stands for the go-forward homer. The Dodgers’ bullpen did the rest as Brian Wilson and Kenley Jansen set the D-backs down in order in eighth and ninth, respectively.

The win completes a surprising about-face for the Dodgers, the crew with the $239 million opening day payroll, that tanked at season’s begin. Let us not overlook that the Dodgers spent the whole month of June in last place within the NL West. At their worst, they had been 12 games under500, 30-forty two and 9 half video games again from first place. That was June 21.

At the beginning of the July, the Dodgers started a hot streak that will be the thing of legend in L.A. for years to come back. They went 19-6 in July, then 23-6 in August. With their victory Thursday, the Dodgers (88-65) have managed to go fifty eight-23 since their most dismal point.

While we wait to see how far these Dodgers can go, having now remodeled themselves into World Collection favorites, their last-to-first comeback by itself stands as some of the memorable tales of the 2013 baseball season.

New Jersey Devils, 2013-14 (Puck Daddy Gold Medal Preview)

(Ed. Observe: It’s an Olympic 12 months in the NHL. So, naturally, we determined to use the trimmings of the Winter Games to preview all 30 teams for the 2013-14 NHL season. Who takes the gold? Who falls on their triple-axel? Read on and find out!)

The New Jersey Devils began the season missing star winger Zach Parise, who left to play back home with the Minnesota Wild. Then, after the season, they noticed their different star ahead, Ilya Kovalchuk, “retire” from the NHL and leave to play again dwelling within the KHL.

Sandwiched in-between was a non-playoff year that followed the staff’s shocking run to the Stanley Cup Remaining. The Devils went 19-19-10, watching accidents gradual Marty Brodeur and Kovalchuk and the workforce’s offense tumble to No. 28 within the NHL in goals for.

While they misplaced their star within the offseason, the Devils gained quite a few veteran players in an try and juice their offense – together with their goalie of the future.

How can one not honor the objective-scoring juggernaut that’s Marty Brodeur, whose third profession goal tied him with Cam Janssen’s career total.

Devils President/GM/Ruler of All He Surveys Lou Lamoriello did what he does when his crew faces adversity and/or loses a key participant: he spent a lot of money on veteran gamers to compensate.

The Devils lost Kovalchuk to Russia and David Clarkson (7 years, $36.75M) to the Toronto Maple Leafs, depriving them of their biggest offensive menace and best energy forward.

Lamoriello’s reinforcements included Ryane Clowe (5 years, $24.25 million), Michael Ryder (2 years, $7 million), and the ageless (nicely, a minimum of till the playoffs) Jaromir Jagr, who signed for 1 12 months and $4 million. The Devils additionally inked Blackhawks castoff Rostislav Olesz for one yr and $1 million.

But the largest transfer Lamoriello made wasn’t on offense: It was his trade of the ninth total pick in the 2013 Draft to Vancouver for goalie Cory Schneider, who turns into Marty Brodeur’s inheritor apparent, whereas Brodeur becomes one more Canadian gold medal goalie that Schneider has to warm the bench behind.

New Jersey also misplaced Matt D’Agostini, Matt Corrente and Alexei Ponikarovsky to free agency, and traded a bitter Henrik Tallinder again to the Sabres.

Forward: In addition to Brodeur, the one fixed for the Devils has been left wing Patrik Elias, who signed a brand new contract this summer season. The franchise’s offensive chief returns and could skate on a line with Travis Zajac and Jagr.

Adam Henrique broke the bank after his sophomore season, foregoing a traditional bridge contract for a six-year deal. He might heart Clowe and Ryder, because the Devils hope their younger heart can blossom into a legit No. 1.

Dainius Zubrus missed vital time last season resulting from harm, but is a helpful presence up entrance. The Devils return Andrei Lokionov and usher in Olesz, who performed for DeBoer in Florida.

Mattias Tedenby, Jacob Josefson and Stefan Matteau are young players hungry for ice time. Stephen Gionta, Ryan Carter and Stever Bernier return as essential grinders, with Krys Barch and Cam Janssen along for muscle.

Defense: The Devils’ ice time leader on defense last season was Andy Greene, an underrated backliner who was a plus-12.

Captain Bryce Salvador, meanwhile, was a minus-12 and saw his offensive numbers from the 2013 playoffs disappear in the following regular season. Additionally a minus-12: Marek Zidlicky, who might see an expanded role on the facility play with Kovalchuk gone.

Anton Volchenkov nonetheless brings the bodily sport however appears to have misplaced a step. Mark Fayne is strong however unspectacular. Veteran Peter Harrold is back, whereas the Devils proceed to hope Adam Larsson becomes the defenseman they picked him fourth overall to turn out to be. Young D-men Jon Merrill and Alexander Urbom will push for time.

Goalies: Brodeur will get the opening day start, however one assumes Schneider will get greater than his share of time. The 40-12 months-old Devils legend stays a solid goaltender, but the 2012 playoff run may very well be the final we see of the dominant Brodeur. Until, after all, the presence of Schneider ignites one thing within the veteran netminder, and we’ve got to pry the job out of his crease.

Pete DeBoer struggled for options last season after Larry Robinson and Adam Oates both left his bench following the Cup run. This season poses several distinctive challenges, together with how he plans to mildew a crew out of a patchwork of veteran gamers.

Lou Lamoriello scrambled to fill the Devils roster with scoring, and was extensively criticized for a few of those contracts (like Clowe’s). He remains one of the shrewdest, smartest and most influential GMs in hockey. However because the workforce enters a transitional phase, one wonders how much longer Lamoriello will likely be pulling the strings in Jersey.

Why would it not be something aside from Devils followers chanting “HEY, YOU SUCK?”

The goaltending. Say what you will about Brodeur, however the potential Corridor of Famer paired with one of the top goalies in a generation in Schneider makes for a dynamic battery.

Elias. One of the most underrated offensive stars in hockey, the Devils’ prime scorer in franchise historical past might also be their top offensive expertise this year.

C’mon, such as you gained’t watch a couple of more Devils energy performs with No. 68 lurking near the web.

Team Velocity. There are some completely plodding gamers on this roster, at a time when speed is at a premium within the NHL.

Every time you need to depend the Devils out, they shock you. So whereas many have them pegged for the bottom two within the Metropolitan Division, don’t be stunned if this can be a workforce that battles on the bubble until the top – and doubtlessly snags the No. 4 seed in the division.

(USA Right this moment Sports activities Pictures)

The Payments said that undrafted free agent quarterback Jeff Tuel would start Week 1.. if E.J. Manuel wasn’t ready.

Manuel, who had minor knee surgical procedure after the team’s second preseason recreation, was back on the sector Sunday.

The Bills aren’t going to rush Manuel again if he is not prepared. He is too valuable, for this season and past. Manuel and Tuel are the only quarterbacks on the lively roster after Kevin Kolb went to injured reserve due to a concussion. Manuel was a primary-spherical choose, and the Payments don’t want to put their hopeful franchise quarterback in hurt’s means. So just because Manuel was again to observe doesn’t suggest he’ll play the opener towards the Patriots. And, Mike Rodak of ESPN reported that Manuel’s participation, through the period the media could watch, was solely in “low-intensity heat-up drills.”

However, it is certainly an excellent sign.

With an excellent week of apply one would assume the Bills would have to give critical consideration to giving Manuel the start. There shall be loads of interest in how Manuel responds over the following week.

He at the moment is in the “everyday” category however won’t be able to go by next week, leaving Smith to start out against the Bucs and former Jets nook Darrelle Revis.

Sanchez has been the extra stable of the two, and watching Smith throw three picks and take a security had to turn Ryan’s stomach when fascinated by the opportunity of what may occur Opening Day.

“[Smith] started out like gangbusters and, clearly, he had the ankle injury, in order that set him again,” Ryan stated. “[He] acquired the game in against the Giants. Obviously, it was a very up-and-down efficiency. He had a great week of follow. We’ll see the place he is from there.”

What about Matt Simms? The statistically impressive quarterback was actually good within the preseason, and he is nearly certain to make the group as a No. three. He will not start, although, having not worked with the first-workforce offense a lot at all in apply, or in the preseason video games.

USA Hockey motivated by gold loss; Saad’s amazing year; big ice questions

ARLINGTON, VA — When the hockey world descends on Sochi for the 2014 Olympic Video games, they are going to be greeted with a bigger ice floor, a floor not see within the event for the reason that 2006 Games in Torino.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”23″]

For Pavelski, the extra ice permits for more creativity, however it also offers a unique problem.

“It’s just fun taking part in,” he said. “It was undoubtedly a bit of completely different sport, holding on to the puck just a little longer, be affected person in certain areas and situations. It was a change of pace. It did take me somewhat bit to get used to, but I used to be actually glad I went over [to the KHL]. [Around] sport eight or nine things began to click a bit bit higher. It was abruptly you knew the conditions [and] the areas of the ice you are able to do certain things on.”

Keith Yandle of the Phoenix Coyotes, meanwhile, sees his sport as a defenseman change with some added room, and he’s relishing the possibility.

“We watched a little video right now and I got a excited to perhaps have the opportunity to be on the massive ice,” he stated. “I’d say probably my finest power is my skating and having the ability to skate out of trouble. With the big rink you can do that. You will get pucks and escape hassle just a little simpler than in an NHL rink simply because there’s that much more room.”

Ryan Kesler and David Backes had to watch Group Canada celebrate after Sidney Crosby’s goal in overtime received the gold medal in 2010. Regardless of Team USA overcoming the doubters previous to the event, a silver medal was fairly the achievement.

But for Kesler, the loss nonetheless hurts and the photographs of the Canadians celebrating stay.

“That’ll never leave. A whole lot of guys are returning and we all know that feeling still.”

David Backes, alternatively, modified his focus within the aftermath of the gold medal game.

“I’ve sort of suppressed these ideas,” he said. “After the Video games you go proper into your NHL season and there’s not a whole lot of time to mirror. I since have and I’ve concentrated less on what the Canadians did and more on what we did and the successes and the place we probably fell just a little quick.

“The feelings that we had and what I was feeling, somewhat than the elation that they had been feeling are driving elements for me still to improve one spot and convey home the gold.”

Brandon Saad of the Chicago Blackhawks has had quite a yr. In case you told him a year ago all the things he would expertise within the following 12 months, he in all probability would have said you have been loopy.

He began the 12 months with Rockford of the AHL, and after making the Blackhawks in January, Saad finished with 10 objectives and 27 points, adequate to warrant being named a Calder Trophy finalist. But there was one other trophy he had his eye on: the Stanley Cup.

Saad contributed six points as the Blackhawks gained their second Cup in four seasons. Not lengthy after the Cup win, Saad was named to Team USA’s Olympic orientation camp roster. Now with a little bit of a summer season break, he is been capable of lastly process just exactly what’s occurred to him over the past 12 months.

“It’s been pretty unbelievable,” he stated. “It’s been surreal. When it happened, it didn’t fairly sink in at the time, however having my occasion and seeing footage an seeing the Cup again, it’s really sank in.”

Even in the summer, you didn’t know if the group was actually going to be there. Simply to have the possession and have them come in and take us in the precise route, that’s going to be nice.” – Keith Yandle on the Phoenix Coyotes’ ownership scenario lastly being settled.

Being the overall manager of a NFL team is: Extraordinarily challenging this time of yr. I all the time felt that after our top 35 players our roster was firmly in pencil and never pen on account of the sudden nature of our sport.

Unexpected cuts from other groups or trades were avenues we were constantly exploring to improve our workforce. Preseason accidents, and especially season-ending ones, can be devastating to a staff it doesn’t matter what kind of public spin a team places on it. If it’s a beginning player at a place the place you don’t have quite a lot of depth, it’s particularly painful (belief me, I’ve been there). You’ll hear the everyday “subsequent man up” strains (strains I’ve used previously), however those try moments for leaders of groups. You do your finest to give you the most effective plausible solution.

Further, you’re fortunate if that top 35 stays intact; coaches and GMs are always discussing the pros and cons of attempting to get your staff ready, balanced with managing the crew’s health as it gets prepared for opening day. Usually occasions our schedule can be tweaked as we received up to now in camp relying on the overall well being of our group.

The cause most NFL GMs are on Ambien: You have to be always trying to find methods to improve your workforce. There can be players added to rosters after Sept. 1 that may have an effect on playoff races. Look at the following key players who have been acquired after Sept. 1 in years past and began at the very least 10 games (thanks to Elias Sports Bureau):

Seattle RB Marshawn Lynch (USA Right now Sports activities Images) • Will Witherspoon, started 10 video games for Eagles in 2009
Brandon Lloyd, began 10 video games for Rams in 2011
Braylon Edwards, began eleven games for Jets in 2009
Marshawn Lynch, started 11 games for Seahawks in 2010
Dan Koppen, started 12 video games for Broncos in 2012
Richard Seymour, started 16 games for Raiders in 2009
Brian Waters, started sixteen games for Patriots in 2011

Lessons Discovered: Evaluating preseason efficiency is tough, no more so than on the quarterback position. A ton of variables enter into this; some groups game plan greater than others, some groups play their starters longer than others, but it’s attention-grabbing to look at some noteworthy quarterbacks who played effectively within the preseason lately and then adopted it up with a sub-par common season:

Drew Bledsoe, Dallas, 2006
Preseason: 33-of-44, 425 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT, 118.1 rating
Regular season: 90-of-169, 1,164 yards, 7 TD, 8 INT, sixty nine.2 rating

Eli Manning, New York Giants, 2007
Preseason: 35-of-51, 345 yards, three TD, zero INT, 107.1 rating
Regular season: 297-of-529, 3,336, 23 TD, 20 INT, seventy three.9 rating

Matt Hasselbeck, Seattle, 2009
Preseason: 38-of-fifty three, 414 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT, 111.7 rating
Regular season: 293-of-488, three,029 yards, 17 TD, 17 INT, seventy five.1 rating

Colt McCoy, Cleveland, 2011
Preseason: 28-of-forty six, 320 yards, four TD, 1 INT, one hundred and one.7 rating
Regular season: 265-of-463, 2,733 yards, 14 TD, eleven INT, 74.6 rating

Nick Foles, Philadelphia, 2012
Preseason: 28-of-forty six, 320 yards, 6 TD, 2 INT, a hundred and ten.1 rating
Regular season: 161-of-265, 1,699 yards, 79.1 rating

Matthew Stafford, Detroit, 2012
Preseason: 26-of-37, 360 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT, 116.9 rating
Regular season: 435-of-727, 4,867 yards, 20 TD, 17 INT, 79.eight rating

Recently, I spotted: There are parts of the coaching camp ritual that I actually miss, (USA Right now Sports Photographs) significantly spending time in Cortland, N.Y. with among the most welcoming individuals in the country. Particularly, Mark Braun of Doug’s Fish Fry, some of the knowledgeable and die-laborious Jet fans anywhere, is as good an individual as there is. Mark was born with the “generosity gene” and he truly derives pleasure from helping others. You owe it to your self to at some point go there and experience a household meal in a great All-American atmosphere – Mark Braun units a excessive standard for all of us.

During the week, regulate: The third week of the preseason is typically when you’ll get the closest to an everyday-season game from a training standpoint, when it comes to sport planning in all three phases.

Evaluating the starters for 2-and-a-half quarters on this week’s video games might provde the finest indication of where your crew presently is. Most coaches I’ve been round liked to play the starters all of the first half and one sequence into the third quarter so players get used to popping out of halftime, making changes and taking part in yet another series.

A sport I’m very conversant in is the Jets-Giants recreation, which at all times had slightly more energy attributable to two teams from the identical market going at it. Unfortunately, it’s additionally a recreation that has brought on vital injuries to each side (Jason Sehorn, Chad Pennington and Osi Umenyiora to name just a few).

Geno Smith will reportedly start in third preseason game for New York Jets

(USA Right now Sports activities Photographs)

The New York Jets have not decided whether or not Geno Smith or Mark Sanchez will begin at quarterback this season, but it seems Smith is being given a golden opportunity to win the job.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”20″]

Smith, a second-round choose this offseason, might need unseated Sanchez throughout the second preseason recreation without even taking part in.

Sanchez began in New York’s first two games, whereas Smith sat out final week resulting from an ankle injury he sustained in the course of the first preseason recreation. Within the preseason opener, Sanchez threw a careless interception to Detroit rookie defensive end Ziggy Ansah, but completed 10-of-13 passes for a hundred twenty five yards and a landing. Last week, Sanchez struggled 3 times the red zone towards Jacksonville. Once, he threw a terrible interception into the end zone on third and goal. The worst possession occurred when Sanchez decided to scramble around for several seconds and ran out the clock earlier than halftime, which cost his crew a discipline purpose alternative but once more. Which will have sealed Sanchez’s destiny.

Barring a setback with Smith’s ankle, the rookie quarterback will start against the New York Giants on Saturday, in response to New York Daily News reporter Manish Mehta. That is vital as a result of the third preseason game often indicates who will start on opening day.

There is no word if each quarterbacks will cut up time with the primary crew. Contemplating Sanchez will come off the bench after two preseason video games not only indicates he has not solidified the job, however it may not be his at all. Nevertheless, if Smith struggles this weekend, the Jets will face a dilemma.

Most NFL groups want to rest their key starters within the remaining preseason sport, and it would be odd to proceed the battle past this weekend. Smith already sustained a preseason injury and risking another damage in the remaining preseason recreation is probably not worth it. And in case you are Rex Ryan, who already has an uphill battle to save his job, it’s definitely not value it.

Smith will have to prove he’s safer with the ball than Sanchez, who at all times appears to battle along with his determination making. Sanchez fumbled 14 instances final season (43 since 2009) and threw 18 interceptions (sixty nine since 2009). If Smith does not mess up this weekend, he would possibly emerge as the favorite to start out forward of Sanchez in Week 1.

Broncos lose center Dan Koppen to torn ACL

The Denver Broncos offensive line suffered one other massive blow as Ian Rapoport of reports the veteran heart Dan Koppen suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and can miss the 2013 season.

The Broncos have confirmed the season-ending injury.

Koppen, who turns 34 on Sept. 12, signed a one-12 months, $915,000 contract with the Broncos on July 2 after middle J.D. Walton underwent another surgery on his left ankle. Walton, at present on the “energetic/bodily unable to perform” record, broke his ankle final September and the setback in his recovery is anticipated to cost him the whole 2013 season. The Broncos added Koppen final September and the former New England Patriots stalwart would go on to start out the final 12 common season video games, as well as Denver’s playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

With Walton and Koppen out, the Broncos turned to guard Manny Ramirez to play heart on Sunday. Ramirez, a 2007 fourth-round pick from Texas Tech who joined the Broncos as a free agent in 2012, has been cross-training at the center position within the opening days of coaching camp.

“We need that flexibility,” head coach John Fox stated. “Whenever you choose your offensive line, not only for the season, however for recreation day, you must pick them from the standpoint of getting some flexibility. You’ve bought to have a swing guard/center, you’ve acquired to have a swing tackle/guard, for the video games. Typically you go in with 5 and convey up two backups. I’m certain that’s the way we’ll go. And who they’re, these guys will determine by how they play in this training camp and preseason.”

The solely different center choice on the Broncos is 2012 fourth-round choose Philip Blake, who did not play as a rookie due a thumb harm. The Broncos will certainly be scouring for additional options on the waiver wire and avenue free agent market.

Ranking the training camp QB battles, from most interesting to ‘Jacksonville Jaguars’

(USA Today Sports Images)

There are many training camp position battles that will have a much bigger effect on the outcome of the 2013 NFL season than who plays quarterback for the Oakland Raiders or Jacksonville Jaguars.

Whoever wins the battle to be Seattle’s backup running back or Denver’s starting middle linebacker will likely have much more of an impact on who wins the Super Bowl than any of the five quarterback battles going into camp.

But, we care about quarterbacks. Mark Sanchez’s comments that he’s ready for the Jets’ competition reminded us of that. And so, with training camps coming up soon, here are the starting quarterback battles that truly seem up for competition as camp begins, ranked from least to most interesting:

Jacksonville Jaguars (a.k.a. the team that drafted a punter instead of Russell Wilson)
The combatants:
Blaine Gabbert vs. Chad Henne

I still don’t get how the Jaguars didn’t take one shot on any of the quarterbacks available in the fourth round of this year’s draft. Even if you don’t love Tyler Wilson, Ryan Nassib or Matt Barkley, the impact of hitting on a quarterback in the fourth round is well worth the gamble. Maybe, in the worst case scenario, you get a solid backup going forward. But they passed on all the quarterbacks, and now we’re stuck with this.

The only good thing about this “battle” is it will be over at some point.

Verdict: Gabbert wins the job, because the Jaguars aren’t going to be very good this season anyway and they might as well try out the former first-round pick again. And then they figure out this offseason that they’re allowed to draft a quarterback for 2014.

Buffalo Bills
The combatants:
Kevin Kolb vs. E.J. Manuel

This one doesn’t have much long-term intrigue because, let’s face it, Kolb isn’t holding off Manuel for long. This is worth keeping an eye on because Manuel is an intriguing player. He wasn’t universally considered the top quarterback of last year’s draft class, but Buffalo took him as the first quarterback off the board, and he does have a good skill set. Good luck finding anyone who is excited about Kolb’s future.

Offseason accounts from Buffalo reporters had Manuel getting a comparable amount of reps to Kolb, which should indicate the rookie will be given every chance to win the job.

Verdict: Manuel starts the season opener. The Bills have more invested in him, and he’s the future. Might as well start the process now.

Geno Smith (7) and Mark Sanchez (USA Today Sports Images) New York Jets
The combatants:
Mark Sanchez vs. Geno Smith

Here’s where it starts to get a little more interesting. Sanchez said he’s planning to win the job, and he’s probably right. He has the experience edge and let’s be honest, Rex Ryan isn’t going to be around after this season if Smith struggles. He won’t benefit in 2014 from Smith learning on the job (unless Smith pulls a Russell Wilson. Andrew Luck or RGIII), so why would he go that route? Smith’s final half of last season and West Virginia and his fall into the second round of the draft shows that he has work to do anyway. (Reports that Smith didn’t go to the informal “Jets West” private workouts this week won’t help that much either.)

Verdict: Sanchez wins it, but there will be a ton of pressure to play Smith if Sanchez keeps turning the ball over. Expect the crowd reaction to be fierce with every single mistake Sanchez makes this season.

Oakland Raiders
The combatants:
Matt Flynn vs. Tyler Wilson vs. Terrelle Pryor

I might be a little crazy but I’m looking forward to this one. The ultimate results of the other three are obvious (the rookies take over eventually in New York and Buffalo, and whoever wins in Jacksonville sets the game back 30 years), this one is tougher to predict. Flynn is intriguing for one reason: He has started two games in the NFL and has had two great performances. I know about sample sizes, I know Flynn has weaknesses that are easily spotted on film, but his two starts have to mean something. But Wilson slipped in the draft mostly because Arkansas was terrible last year, and not surprisingly he is getting rave reviews in the offseason. That pick was perfect for the Raiders. The reward of landing a franchise quarterback is always going to be worth a fourth-round pick (and before the 2012 season the talented Wilson was considered a likely first-round pick). If Wilson isn’t very good, it’s easy to move on.

There’s also Pryor, who is at least somewhat interesting in this era of read-option offensive success. How this battle plays out will affect the Raiders’ future plans and have an impact on the 2014 draft.

Verdict: Flynn wins, Wilson gets a long look at some point, but neither prove in 2013 to be franchise quarterbacks. Then the Raiders look long and hard to see how good Teddy Bridgewater is.

Philadelphia Eagles
The combatants:
Michael Vick vs. Nick Foles vs. Matt Barkley

This is the battle with the most moving parts, and the most interesting. Vick was immediately lauded as the perfect fit for Chip Kelly’s offense when Kelly was hired, and while he may be, Kelly doesn’t rely on his quarterbacks running the ball as much as is portrayed. Reports have started to filter in that Foles might have the upper hand, and it makes sense. Foles isn’t fast, but maybe Kelly isn’t looking for that. Foles looked good at times last year when thrown into the fire, and he’s a lot younger and cheaper than Vick. There’s also Barkley, another case like Wilson – another player once thought of as a sure first-rounder who slipped and should be in Jacksonville right now. It seems like a race where nobody should be surprised if any of the three win it.

Verdict: Vick starts opening day because he is so intriguing. Vick at his peak may be a memory now, but it’s still worth chasing. Plan on seeing at least Barkley this season, and maybe him and Foles. It’ll take a while for Kelly to figure out who fits best.
