Iowa State’s Niang out for rest of NCAA Tournament

Shortly after No. 3 Iowa State’s 97-seventy three win over No. 14 North Carolina Central on Friday evening, the staff took some terrible news.

Georges Niang, a talented forward/star for the Cyclones, was revealed to have damaged his right foot. The damage will take a minimal of six weeks to recuperate, which means Niang’s season is over.

The college launched the information through’s the team’s official men’s basketball Twitter account.

Niang averaged sixteen.5 factors, four.four rebounds and 3.6 assists getting into Friday’s sport. He is a significant forward. Iowa State’s Ultimate 4 hopes certainly take a hit without him.

Iowa State plays No. 6 North Carolina at 4:15 p.m. on Sunday in San Antonio.

It was a really emotional evening for both of those groups. This specific image was hanging as effectively.

Warren stars as NC State reaches field of 64

Warren, NC State Cruise Past Xavier

T.J. Warren scored 25 points in North Carolina State's seventy four-59 win over Xavier, because the Wolfpack advanced to face St. Louis.

Warren, NC State Cruise Previous Xavier

DAYTON, Ohio – Two missed pictures, two fast fouls. T.J. Warren's second likelihood on the NCAA tournament did not begin very nicely at all.

It ended with the ACC's prime participant placing on a show.

The exhausting-to-guard sophomore ahead scored 16 of his 25 factors within the second half on Tuesday night, exhibiting why he was chosen as the ACC's player of the 12 months, and North Carolina State led many of the manner in a 74-59 victory over Xavier within the NCAA event's First 4.

N.C. State (22-12) didn't have a lot time to celebrate. The 12th-seeded Wolfpack headed to the airport for a two-hour flight to Orlando, Fla., and a recreation on Thursday towards St. Louis in the Midwest Regional.

Warren had the most to do with it. He made up for a freshman tournament flop on the same floor a year earlier and prevented Xavier (21-14) from getting any traction in the second half.

"I simply needed to come back out and be aggressive," said Warren, who was 10 of 18 from the sphere. "My photographs would not fall in the first half, but my teammates did a terrific job of finding me."

No shock there.

"Finally in a 40-minute recreation, he's going to find a way," coach Mark Gottfried mentioned.

Middle Matt Stainbrook led Xavier with 19 points and 9 rebounds regardless of an injured left knee. Main scorer Semaj Christon was restricted to 14 factors, and Xavier made only 2 of 14 shots from past the arc.

Xavier's biggest disappointment was its incapacity to decelerate the Wolfpack in the second half, when N.C. State shot 61.5 p.c from the sector.

"We weren't ourselves today on defense," Strainbrook said. "We construct our identity on defense. After we cannot get stops, it ruins every part else. Total, it was just a shambles."

Xavier was taking part in in a well-recognized enviornment less than an hour from campus. Familiar, but not totally pleasant. Fans of the Dayton Flyers – an extended-time rival – booed loudly as they took the court, making for a mixed welcome with a whole lot of Musketeer fans in the stands as well.

Warren made it all a moot point, serving to N.C. State take all the drama out of the sport over the ultimate eleven minutes. Ralston Turner added 17 factors.

The Wolfpack went six years between NCAA appearances earlier than Gottfried obtained them there three years in a row. This was his youngest and least-skilled group: Only two players with match expertise. They bought one of many last at-large bids with a robust closing run, successful five of their final six games, together with an upset of Syracuse within the ACC tournament.

Warren was the important thing. And he really wished a second likelihood at the NCAA match.

As a freshman final 12 months, he managed solely 4 points as N.C. State lost to Temple seventy six-72 on the College of Dayton Enviornment in its opening game. He's grown so much in a single year, main the ACC with 24.eight points per recreation this season and hitting the forty-level mark twice.

He got off to a bad start on Tuesday, missing his first two shots and choosing up two fouls in the first four minutes, 14 seconds. Warren checked back into the game and hit a jumper for his first factors on the eleven:29 mark.

Christon, who was Warren's roommate at Brewster Academy for one yr, stored the Musketeers in it in the course of the first half. He scored off two drives to the basket, starting an eight-1 run. Stainbrook's reverse layup trimmed it to 27-26 with 2:22 left. Jordan Vandenberg's three-level play gave N.C. State a 34-28 advantage at halftime.

Dee Davis hit Xavier's first three-pointer, and Christon scored on a quick-break lay-in that lower it to 39-37.

That is when Warren took over.

"T.J.'s a terrific player," said point guard Tyler Lewis, who had eight assists and 7 points. "We know that generally it's not going to be his greatest game. We need all people to step up and make performs. I assumed within the second half, T.J. did an incredible job of hitting some pictures."

He had a pair of pull-up jumpers, adopted by a steal and a lay-up as N.C. State rebuilt the result in fifty one-42. He had another pull-up jumper and a fast-break dunk that made it 57-forty seven with 7:56 to go. Xavier never received closer than seven factors the rest of the best way, fading down the stretch.

The largest query for Xavier was how Stainbrook's left knee would hold up. The Massive East's second-main rebounder sprained a ligament, sat out the final regular season game and was extremely limited in two Massive East convention games.

He was back in type, however Xavier did not have enough different scoring choices to maintain up.

Poll Attacks

I can not work out why people preserve underrating Iowa State, and I don’t know how anyone might put the Cyclones, with that body of labor, twenty fifth on an AP ballot . However any person did. And their prize for doing so is a spot in this week’s Poll Attacks

Let’s get it!

Related Press: There isn’t a greater discrepancy between the AP ballot and my Top 25 (and one) than the discrepancy between where they’re rating Iowa State and the place I am ranking Iowa State, and I genuinely do not perceive how the Cyclones may be 17th within the AP poll until you just disregard actual wins and losses and penalize them due to a low KenPom rating and/or some eye-test you are administering from a couch.

Because the physique of work is very nice.

Iowa State is nineteen-5 with seven prime-50 RPI victories, just one loss outside of the top 25 of the RPI, and 0 losses outdoors of the highest 75 of the RPI. To assist put that resume into context, it’s worthwhile to know that Kansas has 10 top-50 RPI wins, and that Syracuse and Arizona both have eight. And that is the complete checklist of faculties with extra top-50 RPI wins than Iowa State.

That’s it.

Kansas, Syracuse and Arizona.

Those are the only teams with more top-50 wins than Iowa State. And, again, Iowa State’s losses aren’t dangerous. Two are to Kansas (No. 1 in the RPI), one is at Texas (No. 22 within the RPI), another is at Oklahoma (No. 25 within the RPI), and the fifth is at West Virginia (No. sixty nine in the RPI). So what I decided to do Monday afternoon is establish the AP voter who ranked Iowa State lowest and write about essentially the most indefensible things I may find on his poll.

The AP voter who ranked Iowa State lowest is Tom Keegan.

So right here we go..

Tom has the Cyclones ranked twenty fifth – which is 15 spots decrease than the Top 25 (and one), eight spots lower than the Related Press ballot, and 6 spots decrease than the Coaches ballot. This is baffling for all the reasons said above. Nevertheless it’s especially baffling considering Tom has Iowa State ranked behind Ohio State, North Carolina and Arizona State on his poll as a result of the profiles belonging to those three colleges don’t even examine to Iowa State’s profile. None of these schools have higher wins than Iowa State. All of these schools have worse losses than Iowa State.

You bought a moment?

I will break it down for you here:

Wins towards high 50: 7
Losses outside prime 25: 1
Losses exterior top 100: 0

Wins towards top 50: three
Losses exterior prime 25: four
Losses outside prime a hundred: 1

Wins against top 50: 5
Losses outdoors top 25: four
Losses outside high one hundred: three

Wins against high 50: 4
Losses outdoors high 25: 3
Losses outdoors top 100: 1

So, to summarize, Iowa State has..

  • 4 extra top-50 wins than Ohio State, three extra prime-50 wins than Arizona State, and two more high-50 wins than North Carolina.
  • three fewer losses exterior of the top 25 than Ohio State and North Carolina, and two fewer losses exterior of the top 25 than Arizona State.
  • zero losses outdoors of the highest a hundred whereas North Carolina has three, and Arizona State and Ohio State every have one.

    The numbers are plain, right?

What might possibly be the argument against ISU’s body of labor?

And how might anybody fairly have Iowa State behind OSU, UNC and ASU?

Coaches ballot: I’m not going to get too worked-up about Villanova being ranked forward Creighton as a result of I like Villanova and nonetheless have the Wildcats ranked seventh within the Top 25 (and one) due to a physique of work that options wins over Kansas and Iowa, and 0 losses to anyone apart from Syracuse and Creighton (twice). However I’ve Creighton ranked sixth – i.e., one spot forward of Villanova – and the reason being as a result of I merely consider that when two colleges’ resumes are comparable then the one faculty that has pounded the other twice should in all probability be at least a spot higher.

    That’s not crazy, is it?

Creighton and Villanova are shut to one another within the KenPom scores, within the Sagarin scores, and in the RPI, and Creighton truly has two extra high-50 RPI wins than Villanova. Creighton, after all, has three losses outdoors of the top 25 of the RPI, and Villanova has none; that shouldn’t be ignored. However, nonetheless, the our bodies of labor are close sufficient to the place it is sensible to provide the sting on a weekly ballot to a Creighton workforce that is 2-zero against Villanova due to a 28-point road win over the Wildcats and a 21-point house win over the Wildcats.

Just so we’re clear, head-to-head results aren’t that necessary.

Not whenever you’re judging total bodies of labor.

However, again, Creighton’s body of work is comparable enough to Villanova’s to the place it appears to be like a little silly, I feel, to have the Bluejays behind the Wildcats based mostly on what we have seen when these two groups have lined up and, you know, performed basketball and stuff.

Is Florida St. toast?

Leonard Hamilton and the Noles have a lot of ground to make up now. (USATSI)
Leonard Hamilton and the Noles have lots of ground to make up now. (USATSI)

It's been more than a month since Florida State won back-to-again video games. And given the schedule going forward, it will likely be at the least six weeks before FSU has a shot to end that skid.

While you're saying that about any group, and then you definately have a look at the calendar and see that it is the center of February.. that's an enormous issue. So with Monday night's collapse at residence to North Carolina, the Seminoles' NCAA tournament possibilities might've taken the first hit atop the final nail.

FSU fell eighty one-seventy five to North Carolina on its residence flooring, and naturally the loss is hard take, but especially so when you think about FSU bought out to a hot begin and crumbled away its lead. It was 21-6 before UNC bought itself together and made a push back.

Also must be arduous to swallow contemplating Heels star forward James Michael McAdoo, who averages 15 factors and seven rebounds, did not rating and fouled out with 4:19 remaining. No matter for UNC, since Kennedy Meeks was 11-of-12 from the sector and had a career-greatest 23 points. Level guard Marcus Paige, who was horrible within the first half, went on a tear within the final 10 minutes. He hit three three-points in a 4-minute stretch to give and extend UNC a lead.

Wrote over the weekend how North Carolina's getting into the precise route and is more likely to be rewarded in a big approach on Selection Sunday because of the Heels beating the groups it should.

Leonard Hamilton's crew? Simply can't see it going forward. I'm not sure if FSU falls in that class of "should" have been crushed by UNC, but given the early lead and unhealthy shooting from the Heels, it is an unattrractive look to lose a recreation like this.

The Seminoles have two good possibilities left before the ACC match: at Pittsburgh this weekend, and home to Syracuse to close out the season on March 9. Both might be gained, however with a 2-6 report in opposition to groups within the top 50, how optimistic should Noles followers be?

15-eleven and 6-8 within the league is the present standing. The group's RPI coming into the night was 61 with a energy of schedule close to 50 and a 2-6 record against the RPI high 50. These numbers do not stack up mixed with the sputtering play over the past 5 weeks. The wins have come in opposition to Miami, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Notre Dame, all of whom a preventing for a bid – in the NIT.

Hamilton is in his 12th season at FSU. He had the program in a pleasant spot between 2009-2012, when FSU made four straight NCAA tourneys with a mean seed of No. 7. But between these 4 trips are seven – and now probably eight – campaigns with out an NCAA tourney bid. Below Hamilton FSU is never bad (averaging 19.9 wins, not including this season), however it's typically blended in with the pack both when it comes to its conference and nationally.

That will look like the case this season. And what's worse, FSU will lose three seniors of influence this 12 months, including the crew's greatest player in Ian Miller. He had a team-best 22 factors Monday.

Aspect be aware: Roy Williams set a brand new ACC teaching record for the fastest in league historical past to 300 video games gained general. Williams beat Dean Smith's report of 406 games by doing it in 386. UNC's now won seven in a row. Subsequent up? Massive one at residence Thursday night against Duke.

Ex-Tar Heel Hairston pursues D-League stint

P.J. Hairston

Several NBA executives believe P. J. Hairston could play his way into the first round of the NBA draft with good results in the D-League.
Hairston, 21, released a statement to several news outlets Friday in which he said he has enrolled in an online course at North Carolina and also has submitted paperwork for the NBADL.

"I am pursing an opportunity to play basketball in the NBA's Developmental League, and submitted my paperwork this afternoon, " Hairston said in the statement.

The 6-foot-6 swingman will not be eligible to be called up by an NBA team this season. He will be eligible for the NBA draft in June.

"I am excited to continue to pursue my degree at UNC while also pursing my dream of becoming a professional basketball player, " Hairston said.

Hairston was expected to be North Carolina's go-to player this season after averaging 14. 6 points per game in 2012-13, but he did not play in a single game after an investigation into potential rules violations for his use of rental vehicles tied to former felon and party promoter Haydn "Fats" Thomas.

The school did not seek reinstatement for Hairston. Tar Heels team spokesman Steve Kirschner said earlier this week that Hairston wasn't enrolled for spring semester classes according to the university registrar's office.

""We are displeased with the University of North Carolina's decision not to submit the necessary paperwork to the NCAA requesting to have P. J. reinstated, " the Hairston family said in a statement late last month released following the announcement. "This process has been long, and for to end without having a final decision from the governing body is a shame. "

Added North Carolina coach Roy Williams in a statement: "I am extremely disappointed for P. J., his family and our team as he will no longer be playing basketball at North Carolina. P. J. made mistakes and I was very disappointed by his actions and now he is suffering the very difficult consequences. He is not a bad kid; he just made some mistakes. "

According to several NBA executives, Hairston could play his way into the first round of the NBA draft with strong play in the NBADL. One NBA general manager told ESPN. com that Hairston is considered a fringe first-rounder.

Glen Rice Jr., who was dismissed from Georgia Tech, took a similar path a year ago. Rice increased his stock from a player who would have likely went undrafted, played well in the Development League, and was taken 35th last June by the Washington Wizards.

NCAA Prediction Bowl Game Preview/Pick- Cincinnati vs. North Carolina

ncaa prediction and picks

Cincinnati Bearcats (9-3) vs. North Carolina Tar Heels (6-6) 12/28- 3:20PM EST

Line: UNC -2.5

Over/Under: 56.5

Belk BOWL- Charlotte, NC

Two teams that mirrored each other during the season will take the field on Saturday afternoon in the Belk Bowl hoping to end the year on a high note.

Cincinnati (9-3) and North Carolina (6-6) both struggled in the early season, then made some midseason changes at quarterback which led to long winning streaks before both teams lost close games to longtime rivals in their regular-season finale.

They are a lot like us because they had a slow start and then won a lot of games in the end,” Bearcats coach Tommy Tuberville said. “We are probably a much better team now than we were at the beginning of the year, as they are.”

North Carolina coach Larry Fedora said of his team… “This is a resilient bunch of guys that kept believing in one another throughout the year and I’m glad they were rewarded with a bowl game. We’re looking forward to facing a very good Cincinnati team led by an outstanding coach in Tommy Tuberville.”

The Bearcats will be making their second consecutive appearance in as many years in the Belk Bowl defeating Duke last year 48-34, and this year are back in it thanks in part to a six-game winning streak during the middle of the season that helped them finish third in the AAC.

Quarterback Brendon Kay took over the signal calling for the Bearcats in the second game of the season replacing injured first-stringer Munchie Legaux and responded well throwing for more than 3,000 yards in a season, despite not always being 100 percent healthy.

I tell you that kid competed and he did it on one leg. His ankle is so bad. He’s been wanting to play and push through it and it’s been that way for about six weeks and he has only practiced about one or two days a week,” Tuberville said of Kay following his team’s 31-24 loss to then-No. 19 Louisville on December 5.

He doesn’t throw the ball much because his shoulders are so banged up but I tell you he is a warrior.”

The Tar Heels also made a quarterback change with Marquise Williams taking over for Bryn Renner who suffered a season-ending shoulder injury back on November 2nd. The more mobile Williams generated 14 touchdown passes while also rushing for 531 yards and six scores to lead the Heels.

Look for North Carolina’s Eric Ebron, one of the nation’s top tight ends to be a main target as he leads the team in catches with 55 and with yards with 895, as he looks to challenge the Cincinnati defense.

I just go there out there and do what I do best,” Ebron told the school’s official website.

Ebron is a finalist for the Makey Award which is given to the top tight end in all of college football and has already declared himself eligible for the 2014 NFL draft following the Belk Bowl.

North Carolina finds itself in the Belk Bowl by way of a 1-5 start followed by a five game winning streak to become bowl eligible before losing to in-state rival Duke 27-25 to end the regular-season.

Coach Fedora is proud of the way his team performed after a horrible start. “I’m excited for our team, especially our seniors, who fought through some early season adversity and won five of the last six games to become bowl eligible.”

The Bearcats may have the better record, but the oddsmakers are giving the Tar Heels a slight (minus -2.5) point favorite playing close to home in Charlotte, but get the latest spread on the game up until kickoff right here at Wonder Punter.

The Tar Heels are 2-0 all-time against the Bearcats, but I predict Cincinnati, who outscored their opponents by 166 points through the backend of their schedule to continue the trend on Saturday and leave the state of North Carolina with the Belk Bowl trophy.

P. J. Hairston's career as a Tar Heel has come to a close. He's projected as an NBA player.
(USATSI)P.J. Hairston's career as a Tar Heel has come to a close. He's projected as an NBA player. (USATSI)
The University of North Carolina will play its 2013-14 campaign without one second of contribution from P. J. Hairston. The junior forward has been suspended to this point amid an NCAA investigation into rental cars he drove in the offseason, rental cars connected to an ex-convict. On Friday the school announced it would not seek reinstatement for Hairston, meaning his career at the school is officially over. Nothing to gripe about

Parrish: Hairston's own undoing

"Unfortunately P. J. made a number of mistakes that placed his eligibility at risk and the University's joint review with the NCAA made it clear that seeking reinstatement for P. J. would not be possible, " UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham said in a statement. "The University thanks him for his contributions to Carolina Basketball. We also want to thank Coach Williams for the way in which he has held the team together over the early stages of this season despite not having two veteran players and for the level of care and concern he has for the young men on his team. "

It was Cunningham who said in the summer that Hairston would play this season. Hairston himself echoed that sentiment less than two weeks later.

Williams added that Hairston has been a terrific teammate since his troubles bubbled up over the summer and said he would "support him and help him as much as I possibly can as he enters this next phase of his life and basketball career. "

After the reduction to Texas, Williams declined to take questions about Hairston’s standing or whether the school would distribute a reinstatement demand on his behalf. North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham did issue a short statement.

“The University of North Carolina can be functioning with P.J. Hairston and his household to settle a few unresolved problems that remain,” the declaration read. “We expect to have this matter resolved at the finish of this week.”

[+] EnlargeLeslie McDonald, P.J. HairstonLiz Condo/USA TODAY SportsLeslie McDonald, still left, had been in the Tar Heels’ lineup Wednesday night, but P.J. Hairston remains in limbo.

McDonald known as Wednesday evening “bittersweet” because Hairston wasn’t also declared eligible to play.

“It’s a hard offer being able to become strong in front of the camera because it hurts serious down inside that you can’t become out there with your family – that’s what we call it – my brothers, out there offering their all,” McDonald stated. “Just to be back I has been overjoyed.”

McDonald and Hairston leaned on each other for assistance while they were sidelined. McDonald mentioned they tried to remain focused on issues they could manage, like practice.

“All we can do is talk to each additional, perform the normal points, be as casual as we can,” McDonald said. “That really issues. If you attempt to do the extraordinary, that’s not actually being genuine. We just like to be us. I think that’s what carried us on and kept our spirits up.”

Both players participated in exercise while ineligible.

Oregon gamers Dominic Artis and Ben Carter have furthermore missed time under comparable circumstances. In November, the two received nine-game suspensions and were ordered to pay back again $1,800 each for selling sneakers supplied by the college.

“I think it’s a privilege,” coach Tom Izzo said Monday, several hours earlier than Michigan State was to host Portland. “If we handle it effectively, we’ll see how long we will grasp on. And if we do not, we’ll be taught one thing from that. We do not get a banner or a ring for this, nevertheless it’s good for our program. It is also good for the guys on this crew so as to add to their collection of accomplishments.”

This is Michigan State’s first time leading the rankings since a two-week run in 2000-01, when the Spartans reached the Final 4. Their only different time at No. 1 was a two-week stint in 1978-79, the season Magic Johnson carried the Spartans to the national title.

“Being No. 1 now offers us a chance to see how we’ll handle our purpose of being No. 1 on the end of the season,” Izzo said. “We now have to learn to cope with the stress and standing of being where we are proper now. But I do not suppose by any means this might be like enjoying with a forty-pound weight on our shoulders.”

Kansas, which beat Duke in the nightcap of Tuesday’s Champions Basic on the United Center, moved from fifth to second and received seven first-place votes. Louisville stayed third and drew the opposite seven first-place votes.

“We’ve been within the prime five loads, but we haven’t won a big game early quite like we did last week,” Izzo said. “We’ve earned this, but I do know Kansas or Louisville may very well be No. 1 proper now. Duke and Kentucky are really good, too.”

Kentucky dropped to fourth and was adopted by Arizona, Duke, Oklahoma State, Ohio State, Syracuse and VCU.

VCU is making the school’s first appearance in the high 10. The fans at Death Valley got a scare in the third quarter when Boyd went down with an apparent collarbone injury as he headed for the locker room, only to return a short time later to the delight of the Tigers faithful although with the Tigers up 41-24 at that point, he was not needed to return to action.

With the win, No 8 Clemson moves to 9-1, 7-1 in ACC and for now at least stays in the BCS major bowl bid conversation but most importantly x-rays were negative.

No. 2 MSU keeps Kentucky at bay

Michigan State Holds Off Kentucky

CHICAGO – As the buzzer sounded and his Michigan State teammates raced onto the court docket to celebrate, Gary Harris held his index finger aloft.

Little question about who's No. 1.

For now, not less than.

Branden Dawson tipped in a miss with lower than six seconds left, and the No. 2 Spartans hung on for a 78-74 victory over top-ranked Kentucky and its latest forged of phenoms within the first recreation of the Champions Basic on Tuesday night time.

"We wish to be No. 1 on the finish of the season," Keith Appling stated. "Not the start."

Hold playing like this and the Spartans (2-zero) are positive to be within the dialog come the tip of March.

Kentucky, too. After trailing by as a lot as 13 in the second half, wanting like the freshmen most of them are, the Wildcats (2-1) showed why there's a lot hype surrounding them. Julius Randle virtually beat the Spartans single-handedly, scoring 23 of his 27 points in the second half and making a jumper with 42 seconds left that lower Michigan State's result in seventy six-74.

However Dawson tipped in a miss by Denzel Valentine, and James Young missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

"You bought guys crying in there, which is an efficient thing," Kentucky coach John Calipari stated. "I would like it to hurt like that. I knew this is able to get their consideration. The most important factor is for those who don't do this collectively, you won't win. You may by no means be a particular staff."

This was the earliest 1 vs. 2 match-up, and first since Feb. 23, 2008, when Tennessee beat prime-ranked Memphis. The Tigers coach then? None aside from Calipari.

This sport had even more hype, principally due to the Kiddie Cats. Much has been manufactured from the children, with good purpose. The last time Calipari had a roster this star-studded, the Wildcats gained a nationwide title.

This group may be much more spectacular.

Six have been McDonald's All-People, and all are considered lottery picks in subsequent summer time's NBA draft, with Randle a risk for the general No. 1. The kids did nothing to minimize the hype in their first two video games, with Randle averaging 22.5 points and 15 rebounds, and the Harrison twins averaging in double figures. No marvel the game brought out scouts from almost every NBA group and celebrities including Nazr Mohammed and Detroit Lions defensive deal with Ndamukong Suh.

However the Spartans aren't precisely slouches, returning six of their high seven scorers. Just as necessary, massive-time video games like this are nothing new to them, with Izzo routinely scheduling the likes of Connecticut, Duke, North Carolina and Kansas earlier than Jan. 1.

"They're actually good," Calipari said. "This is the second sport out and so they go 17 assists to seven turnovers? That is unbelievable. Again, understand we're not the greatest defensive group, but 17 and seven? With these lights and all that is occurring around them? They're properly coached. They performed nicely."

Appling got here within two rebounds and two assists of a triple-double, finishing with 22 factors, and eight rebounds and assists. Harris had 20 points and Adreian Payne had 15 points and 4 rebounds for the Spartans.

Kentucky had strolled via its first two games, with Randle and the other freshmen developing large. However there's a large difference between those non-conference patsies and Michigan State, and the Spartans let the Wildcats know what they were up towards from the opening tip.

MSU shot chart

ESPN Stats & Info

Michigan State hit fifty eight.1 percent of its field goals within the first half against Kentucky.

Smothering the Wildcats defensively and leaving them flat-footed with their stunning speed on offense, Michigan State had a ten-0 lead earlier than Kentucky acquired its first bucket. The Cats had seven turnovers before the midway level of the first half, and would finish with 17.

And it was clear that, with four freshmen within the starting lineup and one other getting heavy enjoying time, the Wildcats are still getting used to each other, too. At one point, Andrew Harrison rifled a no-look cross to Willie Cauley-Stein that Cauley-Stein wasn't anticipating, and the ball sailed out of bounds.

They struggled at the line, too, going simply 20 of 36.

"They will get quite a bit better. Give them credit," Izzo said. "But I believed we played awfully well for lots of that game."

Still, the Spartans acquired in foul bother midway by the second half, and the slower tempo gave the Wildcats time to catch their breath and regroup. It also gave a seething Randle a possibility to work out his anger.

"What I beloved about him, he gritted his tooth, was ornery and nasty and he wanted to put them on his shoulders," Izzo mentioned. "For a freshman, that speaks volumes. He utterly did that. You could possibly see it and hear him. Robust kid."

Randle scored nine points in a thirteen-1 run that minimize Michigan State's result in 60-fifty nine with eight:05 left, including a "How'd he do that?" off-steadiness jumper from behind a sea of inexperienced jerseys. He and Harrison every made a pair of free throws to tie the sport at sixty six with 4:forty eight left.

But Appling drilled a 3, and Harris stripped Randle at the other finish. He took it in for a layup that put the Spartans back in entrance, seventy one-66, bringing the Michigan State fans – including Spartan in Chief, Magic Johnson – to their feet.

Randle wasn't executed simply yet, however. After Harrison's free throws Kentucky inside seventy six-seventy two with 1:33 to play, the Wildcats pounced on an Appling turnover and Randle scored on a jumper. But Dawson's tip-in sealed the win.

"I maintain reiterating: They are going to get rather a lot higher," Izzo mentioned. "But I truthfully believe so will we."

I’m joyful for him, that a Cuban won. I’m glad his grandmother arrived and I hope he enjoys his time along with his grandmother and enjoys the prize he received.”

The 22-12 months-previous Myers batted293 with 13 house runs and 53 RBIs in solely 88 games after he was known as up from the minors June 18. He immediately added a lot-needed power to the middle of the Rays’ lineup, helping them reach the playoffs as an AL wild card.

NCAA Recap College Football Thursday Night – Canes Survive

NCAA Recap College Football Thursday Night – Canes Survive

Miami Hurricane’s coach Al Golden warned his football team going into Chapel Hill on Thursday night not to overlook a Tar Heels team that is having a down year, as they would be ready to upset the #10 Hurricanes and that they almost did until a last second touchdown by Dallas Crawford saved Miami from falling off the ranks of the unbeaten.

Crawford, a redshirt sophomore was asked to step in for top rusher Duke Johnson who was injured earlier and he responded by rushing for a career high 137 yards on 33 carries. The biggest run being a go-ahead touchdown run from 3-yards out with 16 seconds left to give the ‘Canes a 27-23 victory.

We’re resilient,” Crawford said. “We’ve been through a lot over the years. It took a long time to get to this point. In years past, we’ve probably would have lost the game. But it’s all about believing, and that’s what we did tonight.”

With the victory, the Hurricanes (6-0, 2-0 ACC) assured themselves another week of staying unbeaten and possibly staying in the Top Ten.

Miami was their own worse enemy with a rash of injuries, quarterback Stephen Morris throwing a season high four interceptions, a nationally top-ranked defense giving up 500 yards of offense and having to come back from 10 points down early in the fourth quarter in order to keep their ACC Championship dreams alive.

Still standing in Miami hurricanes way of that happening are showdowns with No. 5 Florida St. and No. 19 Virginia Tech.

There’s no turning back for this group right now,” Miami coach Al Golden said. “They’re not turning back. There’s no finger-pointing. They’re too invested in each other and in what they’ve given and what they’ve sacrificed to turn back.

I told them all week we were going to have to win this game by playing until there were four zeros, and that was right until the very end.”

However, North Carolina ( 1-5, 0-3 ACC) had one last shot with a Hail-Mary from the Miami 28-yard line as time ran out from quarterback Bryn Renner, but was knocked away denying the Tar Heels of yet another Hurricane upset.

This is worst start for the Tar Heels since 2006, who had expectations of winning their division beginning of the season.

We’ve got a bunch of guys hurting in that locker room down there,” second-year UNC coach Larry Fedora said. “A bunch of guys that played their tails off tonight, gave everything they had, they did everything we asked… Just a tough one for us to swallow for us right now.”

NCAA College Football Picks Thursday Game Preview/Pick- #10 Miami vs. North Carolina

#10 Miami (FL) Hurricanes (5-0) @ North Carolina Tar Heels (1-4) 10/17 7:30PM EST

Line: MIA -7.5

Over/Under- 60.0

This Thursday night, the No. 10 ranked Miami Hurricanes look to stay unbeaten and improve to 6-0 for the first time since 2004 as they take on a struggling Tar Heels team in Chapel Hill.

The Hurricanes, who are also enjoying their first top 10 ranking in four years feel they can stay there for at least one more week against a mismatched North Carolina football team.

Miami coming off a bye week was able to move into the top 10 this week thanks in part to losses by three teams ranked ahead of them.

At the end of the season we’ll count them up and see where we’re at,” Miami coach Al Golden said. “We’re 0-0 going into this game. All that matters right now is going to Chapel Hill, being a mature team, having poise, playing with poise, communicating, executing. The rest of it doesn’t really matter.”

Coach Al Golden comments are meant to keep his Hurricanes in line and not take a down Tar Heels team lightly this year remembering the Georgia Tech game on October 5th where they were down early and came back.

You really don’t have any leadership until you have a bead of sweat and the crap hits the fan,” Golden said. “And that’s what happened. I think we learned a lot about our team. We had great leadership through that, we had great poise, but it did look bleak.”

The Hurricane offensive attack is lead by quarterback Stephen Morris with a passer rating of 169.7, ninth best in the country and Duke Johnson, fourth in the FBS with 190.8 all-purpose yards per game.

I’m proud to say we’re on the right track,” Morris said. “But we’ve still got a lot of things to do.”

Last year, the Tar Heels beat Miami in their own home with an 18-14 victory, something still fresh in the minds of the Hurricanes, but with any hope of a repeat performance, North Carolina’s defense must step up. The Tar Heels are last in the ACC in yards against at 436.0 per game.

But despite the Tar Heels struggles this year, coach Larry Fedora believes the season can be turned around.

There is no doubt in my mind that it is and it starts today, or yesterday or whenever you want it to start, it starts now. It’s just about us getting better,” he said.

Miami was winless in four trips to Chapel Hill prior to 2011, however North Carolina has dropped six straight to Top 10 teams since a 31-28 win over then –No. 4 Miami in 2004.

We will find out Thursday night, but still feel the Hurricanes will be looking to avenge last year’s loss to the Tar Heels. Too much offense and a solid defense. Miami in a route.
