Brian Wilson's beard means more to him than pitching for the Yankees.Brian Wilson’s beard means more to him than pitching for the Yankees. (USATSI)

With Mariano Rivera calling it a career and GM Brian Cashman saying he’s “not sure” if setup man David Robertson is prepared for the ninth inning, the Yankees figure to be available in the market for a closer this winter. Joe Nathan and Grant Balfour are free brokers, amongst others, however we are able to cross former Giants closer Brian Wilson off the listing. Why? Look:

Brian Wilson’s agent informed Brian Cashman that Wilson will not shave his beard. “Cross him off the checklist,” Cashman mentioned.

— Mark Feinsand (@FeinsandNYDN) November 13, 2013

The Yankees have had a pretty strict facial hair coverage – neatly groomed mustaches only, no hair below the lip – for decades now, a policy the right-hander desires no a part of. Keep in mind, Wilson reportedly turned down a cool $1 million to shave his beard earlier this 12 months.

In 24 games with the Dodgers after returning from his second Tommy John surgery, Wilson allowed one run whole in 19 1/3 innings between the regular season and postseason in 2013. His fastball sat within the mid-90s and his slider was a wipeout pitch.

Given his energy stuff and pedigree as a World Sequence successful closer, Wilson made an terrible lot of sense for New York. Alas, it is not meant to be.

MLB World Series- Cardinals Win In A Wild Ninth 5-4

World Series Game 2: Cardinals win 5-4

Best-of-Seven: St. Louis leads 2-1

For the first time in postseason history, a game was decided by an obstruction call and it’s the first time since 1986’s Game 6 that a World Series game was decided by an error in what was a bizarre ending in Game 3 of the Fall Classic that saw the St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Boston Red Sox 5-4 to take a 2-1 series lead.

The play in question that everyone will be talking about, and for all intent and purposes was the correct call took place in the bottom of the ninth inning when third baseman Will Middlebrooks tripped the Cardinals’ Allen Craig as he was trying to score on an errant throw from Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia who seconds before successfully tagged out Yadier Molina.

Second baseman Dustin Pedroia fielded Jon Jay’s grounder and immediately threw home to get a sliding Molina for the second out… Saltalamacchia then threw wildly to third base in hopes of completing a double play with a sliding Allen Craig. It was then, when Middlebrooks dove for the ball as it went wide down the left field line and tripped Craig as he attempted to get up and go home.

Left fielder Daniel Nava fielded the ball and gunned it home and had Craig beat when he slid home, however as the Red Sox where about to begin celebrating a successful double play… third base umpire Jim Joyce immediately signaled obstruction by Middlebrooks making Craig safe at the plate and more importantly giving St. Louis the win.

It was an entertaining game as the Red Sox fought back twice in Game 3 to tie the game in the six and eighth innings to set the stage for a wild bottom ninth.

Boston’s Jake Peavy started for the Red Sox but lasted only four innings giving up two runs.

Brandon Workman (0-1) took the loss for the BoSox.

Joe Kelly started for Cardinals and went 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs, striking out six.

St. Louis closer Trevor Rosenthal (1-0) picked up the win despite allowing two runs as he tried for a five-out save with one out in the eight and bases loaded.

David Ortiz started first base for the Red Sox, but his bat did not cause any damage going 1 for 2 with two-walks.

Game 4 is scheduled for Sunday night at 8:15PM EST with Boston’s Clay Buchholz (0-0, 5.40 ERA) facing Lance Lynn (2-1, 5.40 ERA).

Leyland won’t return for Tigers: ‘It’s time’

DETROIT – A picture of Jim Leyland’s face stared out from the video board at an empty Comerica Park, next to that familiar Olde English “D” and a message that stated merely: “Thank You Jim.”

After eight seasons managing the Tigers, including three division titles and two American League pennants, Leyland stepped down Monday. His voice cracking at times, wiping away tears at others, he announced his departure two days after Detroit was eliminated by Boston within the AL Championship Collection.

“It has been a thrill,” the sixty eight-year-old Leyland mentioned during a news conference at the ballpark. “I got here here to change expertise to staff, and I think with the assistance of this whole organization, I think we’ve accomplished that. We’ve won quite a bit. I’m very grateful to have been a small a part of that.”

Leyland made his managerial debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986, and from Barry Bonds to Miguel Cabrera, he’s managed among the sport’s greatest stars and been involved in a few of baseball’s most memorable games over the past quarter-century.

In 1992, his Pirates misplaced Game 7 of the NLCS when Atlanta rallied within the backside of the ninth inning. Five years later, Leyland received his solely World Series title as supervisor when his Florida Marlins beat Cleveland in an eleven-inning thriller in Recreation 7.

He is experienced a few of the highest highs the sport has to supply, but he also endured troublesome rebuilding periods in both Pittsburgh and Florida.

After one season with the Colorado Rockies, Leyland didn’t manage in any respect from 2000-05 earlier than Detroit employed him. Leyland led the Tigers to the World Series instantly after taking over in 2006, shedding to St. Louis in five games. The Tigers went to the World Series once more in 2012 but had been swept by San Francisco.

Leyland labored underneath one-12 months contracts the last couple years, saying he was content to attend till after the season to address his standing. He was reflective late this season, mentioning to reporters that he had already managed the Tigers longer than he had anticipated they’d hold him, but he additionally said in September that he still beloved the environment, the competitors and his crew.

Actually, he’d actually told general manager Dave Dombrowski in early September that he didn’t wish to return as manager. He expects to remain with the organization in some capacity after going seven hundred-597 as a manager.

Jim LeylandJim Leyland announced Monday that he is stepping down as manager of the Detroit Tigers after eight seasons and two journeys to the World Sequence.

“I am not completely retiring as we speak, I am simply not going to be within the dugout anymore,” Leyland said. “I hope and pray that you simply give the next supervisor the same respect and the same chance that you gave me.”

Leyland says his health is okay, however it is time to stop managing. He stated he began weighing his determination round June.

“I began thinking this was getting just a little tough. I thought that the fuel was getting somewhat low,” Leyland mentioned. “I knew that I might get through it as a result of I knew we’d be taking part in for one thing.”

The Tigers determine to contend again subsequent yr, which may lead Dombrowski to search for a confirmed commodity who can are available and handle. Kirk Gibson, who led Detroit to the 1984 World Collection title as a player, is now managing in Arizona, however Diamondbacks president Derrick Corridor tried to quash any hypothesis that Gibson would return to the Tigers.

“We might not grant permission [to the Tigers to speak to Gibson] if asked as a result of we wish him right here, and he told me this morning he has little interest in leaving,” Hall mentioned.

Detroit’s gamers came upon about Leyland’s departure after Saturday night time’s sport in Boston, when the Red Sox won Game 6 to take the collection.

“You have bought your head down, you lost and the season’s over, after which Jim dropped that bomb on us,” outfielder Torii Hunter mentioned. “I simply had a feeling that it might have been his last 12 months. All yr, he was kind of emotional, and I just felt it.”

Leyland stated there was no announcement Saturday because he wished the main target to be on the victorious Red Sox. Nevertheless, he was honest about how a lot this defeat hurt.

“With all due respect to the Boston Purple Sox – who earned it, they gained it, they should be the place they’re – I really believe the Detroit Tigers must be playing right here tomorrow,” Leyland mentioned. “This is one which’s going to stay with me, that is one that really hurts, because I actually felt like we let it get away.”

Red Sox supervisor John Farrell said the transfer got here as a shock.

“I had sent him a text yesterday morning simply to congratulate him and the group on not solely an amazing team, however an amazing year,” Farrell said. “I expressed the respect that we have for him, and positively I’ve personally for him for all of the success he is had in his profession.

“To see the announcement in the present day, and to pay attention and know early September this was very clear on his thoughts, that’s stunning. However my gosh, whenever you take a step back and also you see someone who has managed for 22 years, it is a hell of a profession and one I’m certain he’s extraordinarily proud of.”

When Leyland arrived on the Tigers’ training camp this year, it marked 50 seasons since he first showed up there as an 18-yr-outdated prospect. His playing career by no means amounted to a lot, however his accomplishments as a supervisor over greater than 20 years have been impressive.

He is 1,769-1,728 overall throughout stints with the Tigers, Pirates, Marlins and Rockies.

When Leyland took over the Tigers, they had gone 12 years with no profitable season. Below Leyland, they completed under500 only as soon as.

Detroit has develop into one among baseball’s glamour groups of late, with stars like Cabrera, Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer serving to the staff win video games and draw fans. Cabrera received the Triple Crown and MVP award final 12 months. Verlander won the MVP and Cy Younger Award the earlier season.

“It has been as much fun for me to handle Ramon Santiago is it has Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander,” Leyland stated. “Now in saying that, it was additionally an honor to manage the Triple Crown winner, an MVP, a Cy Young winner.”

The Tigers should be capable to preserve their core of players mostly together for next season, however now they will have to discover a new manager to replace Leyland, who always earned high marks for his skill to keep his veterans targeted.

“He actually cares deeply about his gamers,” utility man Don Kelly said. “If you go out there, the way he treats you, you want to run through a wall for him, go on the market and get a win. That is the best way he treated me, he handled all people like that.”

Fellow Detroit coach Jim Schwartz, of the Lions, also lauded Leyland, saying if he hadn’t been a manager he may have been “a captain of a ship someplace.”

“I feel the hallmark of his managerial model would have been the same hallmark if he would have been that ship’s captain,” Schwartz stated. “He would have been up at the helm most likely smoking a cigarette. It would have been like 20-foot swells, hurricane coming in and he would not even bat a watch. Everyone on the crew would have seemed up and said, ‘Hey, things are going to be OKAY.’ That is why I’ve a lot respect for him.”

“There’s all the time second-guessing and there is a lot of issues that go on and baseball’s robust,” Schwartz added. “There is a reason they call it a supervisor. He has to manage lots of completely different personalities and things like that and I actually realized so much watching him up shut these final 5 years and, you recognize, baseball goes to miss him. Hopefully he can stay. I do not know what role he’ll have however I heard that he’ll keep in the game. Baseball will be higher for him staying within the sport.”

MLB NLCS Game 5 Recap- Dodgers Win To Stay Alive

NLCS Game 5: Dodgers win 6-4

Best-of-seven: Cardinals 3-2

The Los Angeles Dodgers with their backs against the wall in Game 5, used their bats and played long-ball on Wednesday afternoon in beating the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 to force a Game 6 Friday night in the National League Championship Series.

The Dodgers got clutch performances from Zach Greinke (1-0) and Adrian Gonzalez who homered twice to set-up ace Clayton Kershaw (1-1, 0.47 ERA) for a Game 6 showdown back in St. Louis against rookie Michael Wacha (2-0, 0.64 ERA) who won Game 2 against Kershaw.

The Cardinals had a chance to end it early after loading the bases in the first inning with no outs, but Greinke was able to get Matt Adams to chase a pitch in the dirt for strike three, then followed that up by getting Yadier Molina to hit into an inning-ending double play.

That was big. I was real nervous out there with that situation,” Greinke said.

If my at-bat changes, it could swing the game,” Adams said. “I didn’t get the job done. We didn’t get it done.”

Last year St. Louis failed to close-out the Giants after leading 3-1, as San Francisco rallied back to win the NLCS and eventually the World Series as well.

We’re looking to do the same thing,” Gonzalez said.

We had a couple of opportunities to do something, and we just couldn’t make it happen,” manager Mike Matheny said. “These guys have done a tremendous job in those exact same situations all season long. You’re going to have games where you just can’t make it happen, and we’ve got to figure out a way to get it done the next time we get a chance.”

The Dodgers have to like their chances of extending the series to seven- games with possibly the best pitcher in baseball Clayton Kershaw getting the ball in Game 6.

We’ve kind of become America’s team because everyone wants to see a seventh game,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. “Probably even the fans in St. Louis would like to see a seventh game, so I figure that everybody’s for us to win on Friday night.”

And if the Dodgers remember to pack their hot sticks with them along with the pitching of Kershaw… America may have its wish for a Game 7.

Game 5 saw the Dodgers hit four long balls.. two from Gonzalez, and one each from catcher A.J Ellis and Carl Crawford that help lead the way to a six run explosion on the afternoon.

It was just on of those days that we were a little better, got some runs, good feeling,” Mattingly said.

Winning pitcher Zach Greinke ended the afternoon with seven strong innings, six-hits, two earned runs, one walk, four strikeouts.

He made the pitches, we made the plays, got out of it,” Gonzalez said. “We were able to get run support for him. All he needed was a few runs.”

Guys weren’t ready to lose today,” Carl Crawford said.

The Cardinals made some noise in the ninth inning when they got as close as 6-4 with two-runners on against Dodger closer Kenley Jansen, but he was able to strike out pinch-hitter Adron Chambers, thus securing the Game 5 victory.

Cardinals starting pitcher Joe Kelly (0-1) took the loss.

Game 6 is Friday night at 8:30PM EST.

MLB Scores ALCS Game 1 Recap- Tigers Win On One Hitter

ALCS Game 1- Detroit Tigers @ Boston Red Sox

Best-of-Seven- Detroit leads 1-0

Not a bad opening act for the Detroit Tigers in Game 1as they combined for a one hit shutout 1-0 over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park Saturday night to take the first game in the American League Championship Series.

Anibal Sanchez (1-0) no-hit the Red Sox for six innings with 116 pitches before turning the ball over to the bullpen who followed suit, until it was broken up with one out in the ninth inning by Daniel Nava’s clean hit single to center field off closer Joaquin Benoit. Benoit then preceded to strike out Stephen Drew and then retired Xander Bogaerts on a pop-up to shut the door on any Red Sox come back.

At this point, especially in this series, it’s not about throwing a no-hitter,” said Sanchez. “As soon as you get some zeroes… it’s more important. It’s more important than the no-hitter at this point.”

It was one of those nights,” Nava said of the near no-hitter. “You never want it to happen… ever.”

Boston’s Jon Lester (0-1) kept the Red Sox in the game going 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run and six hits.

Jhonny Peralta had an RBI single off Jon Lester in the sixth for the game’s only run.

It was a battle. It stinks that one run did it,” Lester said. “That’s playoff baseball.”

Anibal Sanchez showed why he was the American League ERA Champion striking out 12 Red Sox hitters over six innings.

All total, 17 Red Sox hitters struck-out.

However, Sanchez walked six Boston hitters total giving them an opportunity to hang around early and then in the sixth inning walked the bases loaded before getting out of the jam by striking out Stephen Drew, pumping his fist in the air.

We had the bases loaded with two outs,” Lester said. “You’d think maybe we can catch a break, but they just kept on making pitches.

Red Sox manager John Farrell wasn’t surprised by No. 3 starter Anibal Sanchez’s performance.

I wouldn’t say unexpected. He came in as the league leader in ERA,” Farrell said. “Whether it was Sanchez or every guy they brought out the bullpen, it was power stuff.”

It doesn’t get easier for the Red Sox in Game 2 Sunday night as they must now face AL Cy Young Award favorite Max Scherzer (2-0).

We have the ability to put it tonight behind us,” Farrell said. “We’ll be ready to go.”

Clay Buchholz (0-0) will oppose Scherzer.

The Red Sox were shut out at Fenway Park in the postseason for the first time in 95 years.

MLB Scores ALDS Game 4 Recap: Athletics vs. Tigers

ALDS Game 4: Series tied 2-2

Thanks to some late game heroics by the Detroit Tigers and a fan… the Tigers have forced a Game 5 back in Oakland on Thursday night by defeating the Oakland Athletics to even the series 2-2.

The Detroit Tigers pulled out all the stops in Game 4, even having their ace Max Scherzer pitch in relieve to try to shut the door on the A’s to force a winner-take-all in Game 5 to advance to the American League Championship Series.

The A’s applied the pressure early and often as they tried to finish off Detroit and move on.

Oakland scored one in the first and two in the third to open up a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, however thanks to Jhonny Peralta’s three-run shot over the left field fence, we had a new ball game. Tied 3-3.

But, it was short lived as Coco Crisp singled off Max Scherzer to center in the seventh inning to score another run making it 4-3 Oakland.

Then in the bottom of the seventh is when things got interesting. Victor Martinez hit a fly ball to right field and outfielder Josh Riddeck appeared to have a play on the ball when two fans reached over the railing to interfere with the play preventing Riddeck from any possible attempted catch. The Oakland A’s vigorously disputed the call, however the umpires upon watching the video ruled it indeed a homerun and the score was tied once more at four apiece.

I have no doubt I was going to catch that ball. When I looked at the replay, that’s what I thought,” Reddick said. “It’s totally frustrating that a fan can influence the game.”

Crew chief Gary Darling disagreed… “It was clear he was not going to catch the ball, so it was clearly going to be a home run,” Darling said. “There wasn’t any other evidence on replay to turn it another way.”

After the homerun was ruled good, the Tiger’s were able to add another run in the seventh for a 5-4 lead and then tacked on two more runs in the eighth to increase the lead to 8-4.

Max Scherzer (2-0) who worked his way out of a no out eighth inning jam with the bases loaded to preserve the lead 8-4, picked up the win. It was his first relief duty assignment since the 2011 postseason.

It was surreal.” Scherzer said. “Maybe it was not the ninth inning, but that’s the stuff you dream about pitching… bases loaded, eighth inning, no outs and I was able to do it.”

One last push for the Athletics in the ninth inning when Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run single bringing the tying run to the plate, but Joaquin Benoit shut the door when he struck out Seth Smith to end.

We took our best shot and we had to because we were behind the 8-ball a little bit,” Leyland said. “We took that shot and, hey, both teams are going to have a good pitcher going two days from now.”

Detroit will be sending Justin Verlander (0-0) against scheduled starter Bartolo Colon (0-1), although look for rookie Sonny Gray (1-0) who pitched a gem in Game 2 to perhaps get the nod in a win-or-go-home game.
