Line: HOU -1.5

Over/Under: 212.0

The San Antonio Spurs coming off a bad game loss at the hands of the Miami Heat will try to avoid losing consecutive games as they travel into Houston to take on a Rockets team that will try to avoid their third straight in an important Western Conference showdown on Tuesday night.

The Spurs (33-11) lead the second-place Rockets (29-17) in the Southwest Division by five games, but have dropped three of five while the Rockets suffered back-to-back losses in a home-and-home series matchup against the surging Memphis Grizzlies.

San Antonio was riding a six-game road winning streak before they ran into a buzz saw in Miami that saw them trail by as many as 29 points before losing 113-101 in their first rematch since Game 7 of the NBA Finals.

Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green (hand) and Tiago Splitter (shoulder) are mainstays in the Spurs defense but injuries to these players are beginning to take their toll where they surrendered a season-worst 58.1 field goal percentage to the Miami Heat.

Everybody has injuries. You have to deal with them during the season,” said Tony Parker. “Obviously, it’s hurting us but they’re going to come back. We just have to keep pushing and trying to get better.”

The Spurs, who own a league-best 16-4 mark away from home will look to take advantage of a Houston team in search of their offense after being swept in a home-and-home series to the Grizzlies that saw them shoot 38.8 percent including 23 of 66 from behind the arc in both games. The Rockets went into those games shooting a league-best 47.0 percent while averaging 109.0 points per game. They lost at home 88-87 and in Memphis 99-81.

The last two games we’ve been terrible offensively,” said Chandler Parsons.

Rockets scoring leader James Harden who entered the series averaging 24.3 points per contest this season, totaled just 26 points in both games on 8 of 24 shooting should be able to get back on track scoring wise against the Spurs…. a team in which he is averaging 30.0 points per game over his last five contests against since joining the Rockets prior to the 2012-13 season. He’s also shooting 60.9 percent from behind the 3-point line.

Houston is 2-0 winning both games on the road (112-106 and 111-98) on the season versus the Spurs and oddsmakers like their chances again as they have made them a slim (minus -1.5) point favorite, but stay up-to-date on the latest spread for the game up until tipoff right here at Wonder Punter.

It’s going to be a tough game,” Houston coach Kevin McHale said. “The first two games don’t make any difference. We’re a different team. They’re a different team. We’ve got to play really well. That team lost to Miami, they’re going to come in hungry.”

A tough game it is going to be, but I predict the trio of Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili each having a great game to lead the Spurs to a big road win in Houston.

Line: GSW -8.0

Over/Under: 206

On Tuesday night, the Golden State Warriors will look to keep the momentum going against the visiting Washington Wizards after shutting down the NBA’s highest scoring team… the Portland Trailblazers on their last time out.

The Warriors (27-18) have enjoyed recent success against the Wizards beating them six straight times and are 10-3 this season against the Eastern Conference, but are just 2-5 in their last seven games allowing 108.4 points per game on 47.8 percent shooting. Before their defense decided to go south, they had been holding opposing teams to 98.3 on 42.9 percent.

However, the Warriors defense made a guest appearance on Sunday night as they held the Blazers to just 33.7 percent in a 103-88 win to snap a three-game skid. “Just what the doctor ordered,” Golden State coach Mark Jackson said.

All-Star Stephen Curry is the go-to man when it comes to scoring (24.1 ppg) to help pace the Warriors at 104.0 points per game, but understands defense is the key to winning…. “We understand that’s been one of our problems—just letting teams kind of cake walk around on the offensive end doing whatever they want to do early in the game,” Curry said.

As for the Wizards (21-22), they are a much improved team from last year, but are still performing below expectations this season as Saturday’s loss to Utah 104-101 denied them their sixth opportunity to go over the .500 mark for the first time since starting 2-1 back in the 2009-10 season. Their knock has been they are playing at their opponents level as evident in their loss against lowly Utah.

We were running in mud half the game, in my opinion,” coach Randy Wittman said. “We wouldn’t commit ourselves to our pace.”

Washington had won five of six away from home before Saturday’s loss, and it’s no surprise the success of the Wizards is on the shoulders of point guard John Wall (20.0 ppg, 8.0 assists per game) who must perform at a high level every night to give his team a chance to win, especially with a bench that only scores 24.8 points per game.

The Warriors are last in the league in bench scoring with 22.9 and were outscored 51-27 but won 112-96 win at Washington back on Jan. 5, a game that saw Golden State beat the Wizards for the tenth time in thirteen meetings.

Golden State starters center Andrew Bogut (8.0 ppg) and power forward David Lee (19.2) are listed as day-to-day, so look for guard Klay Thompson (19.0) along with Curry to keep the offense productive.

Despite the recent struggles on the defensive side of the ball for the Warriors, the oddsmakers have made them a big (minus -8.0) point favorite at home, but stay up to date with the latest odds on the game up until tipoff right here at Wonder Punter.

I like the young Wizards, but with the Warriors having won six straight in the series, I see no reason for them not to have a let down on Tuesday night and predict Golden State winning easy.

NBA Prediction Thursday Game Preview/Pick- Denver vs. Portland

nuggets vs trail blazers

Denver Nuggets (20-20-, 9-11 away) @ Portland Trailblazers (31-11, 16-4 home) 01/23- 10:30PM EST

Line: POR -7.0

Over/Under- 221.5

The Portland Trailblazers return home to the Rose Garden on Thursday night looking to get back on track against the Denver Nuggets and avoid losing their third consecutive game for the first time all season.

The Blazers (31-11) return home after splitting a four-game road trip that saw them beat San Antonio and Dallas to start but then lose to Houston and Oklahoma City to end it. It was a tough stretch of games on the road as they faced four of the Western Conference’s top seven teams.

Tuesday’s loss 105-97 at the hands of the Thunder cost them first place in the Northwest Division as OKC now lead the Blazers by one full game. Portland led the Thunder for much of that contest, but thanks to Kevin Durant going for 46 points (11 in the final 3:23), he showed why he is this year’s NBA MVP hands down in my opinion.

We’re not happy. Last year we were coming off a road trip at .500. We’re not that team anymore,” said Wesley Matthews.

On Durant who has scored at least 30 points in his last seven games… Matthews says, “When the basket is an ocean, you can’t really do much about it. He’s been on a roll.”

Despite that loss, this is a different Portland team that we are accustomed to in the past and although they lead the NBA in scoring with 109.3 points per game, their defense at 103.5 needs some improvement if they want to be serious contenders come playoff time.

LaMarcus Aldridge and guard Damien Lillard along with a supporting cast are getting it done this year and all helped in an earlier win at Denver 113-98 back on Nov. 1 that saw a 3-point shooting barrage in which the Blazers went 14 of 22 from beyond the arc.

Portland has beaten the Nuggets 6 of seven times at the Rose Garden, with Denver winning on their last visit back on Feb. 27 111-109.

For the Nuggets (20-20), it’s been an up and down season and had to be feeling good after winning five straight but have since dropped three of four and two consecutive. Now with the loss of Danilo Gallinari gone for the season after undergoing a second operation on his left knee, the Nuggets may be nothing more than a .500 team the rest of the way.

Defense.. or should I say lack of defense has been their downfall all year long and their last four opponents have averaged 117.0 points while shooting 49.1 percent from the floor.

We score enough points,” Ty Lawson said. “No defense.”

And it’s the lack of defense by the Nuggets that has oddsmakers making the home Blazers a (minus -7.0) point favorite on Thursday, but get the latest odds up until game time right here at Wonder Punter.

Lawson is averaging 19.9 points on 51.2 percent shooting against the Trailblazers over his last eight games, but it will take more than that to upset Blazers who are exceptionally tough at home. All signs point to the Trailblazers winning easily.

NBA Picks and prediction Lakers vs. Heat

Los Angeles Lakers (16-26, 8-15 away) @ Miami Heat (30-12, 17-3 home) 01/23- 8:00PM EST

Line: MIA -12.0

Over/Under- 211.0

On Thursday night, the injury riddled Lakers will travel into Miami in the midst of a season-high seven game road trip to take on the Miami Heat, a team that is 3-2 in their last five but plays great at home in a rematch from Christmas Day.

The Heat (30-12) are coming off a disappointing road trip that saw them go 2-2… disappointing in the sense that we expect more from the two-time defending champs. Overall the Heat, had gone 2-4 in their last six games that saw their defense struggle giving up an average of 103.8 points per game in that span before putting the defensive clamps on the Boston Celtics winning 93-86 on Tuesday night at home. The defense bounced back nicely holding the Celtics to just 39.3 percent shooting on the night.

Even if it wasn’t perfect, the possessions meant something to us, the mistakes meant something to us,” Miami coach Erik Spoelstra told the NBA’s official website. “It starts with that type of pride in our defense.”

This season the Heat is giving up 98.5 points per game, which is up from their 2011-12 season mark of 92.5 and last season’s 95.0 points per contest. Defense wins games and championships and the Heat this season is 25-1 when holding opponents to under 100 points.

It’s the only way we’re going to be able to win games, if we defend,” LeBron James said.

Miami has been without the services of Dwayne Wade for the last three games, who has been hobbled throughout the year with sore knees. The Heat are 6-6 in his absence this season and his status for Thursday is questionable.

It’s difficult doing what we do,” Chris Bosh said. “But that’s why we’re the champs, to do the difficult thing again and get the job done. Tonight was a good start. We just have to build off it.”

And keeping it going for the Heat with the Lakers (16-26), a team that has been hammered with injuries all year, especially at the point guard position, they have to like their chances.

Miami has won three straight and seven and their last eight over the Lakers in the series, including a 103-95 victory back in Los Angeles on Christmas Day.

No Kobe Bryant, no Steve Nash, no Jordan Farmar, no Steve Blake, no Xavier Henry…. injury after injury, a team full ‘whos-who’ it seems like, but they are playing hard and that’s all we can ask for as a fan. Bryant will have his knee re-evaluated next week with hopes of a return date soon to follow.

It’s a good test for us. The Lakers are a really good team, too. They’re just in an unbelievable conference,” James said. And with the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder visiting the Heat to follow the Lakers on Thursday… “Obviously we know what the Spurs and OKC are all about. We’re looking forward to playing against these three teams, but it starts with the Lakers, and then we go from there.”

The Lakers are just 3-13 in their last 16 games and 2-2 on this “Grammy Awards” road trip, but gave away Monday’s game to the Bulls, allowing a buzzer beater layup bucket to lose 102-100 in overtime.

It’s heartbreaking,” said guard Nick Young. “We felt like we were competing and was in it. That’s all we can ask for.”

It’s going to take a another full team effort and hard play from the Lakers if they want to leave South Beach with an upset win on Thursday as the oddsmakers have made the home Heat a huge (minus -12.0) point favorite, but get the latest spread on the game up until tip-off right here at Wonder Punter.

Nick Young has played well off the bench this year and Pau Gasol has stayed hot over his last five games averaging 22.0 points with 12.4 boards but has been ineffective against the Heat over his last three games averaging just 12.0 points.

But, without Kobe and Nash, it’s been tough going for the Lakers, despite playing hard.

It just makes it harder,” coach Mike D’Antoni said. “The biggest thing is how to finish games off because you know where you’re going if they’re on the floor. You’ve got to figure that out.”

As mentioned before, the Lakers will need to play their best to have any chance on Thursday and with the challenge of being in the middle of a long road trip, the odds are against them. If they don’t come out with energy early… the game may get ugly quick and it will be a long night. In the end, too much talent on the Heat to lose this one at home.

NBA Playoffs: Who Survives the Loaded Western Conference? Predictions

western conference

NBA Prediction Western Conference 2013

On Wednesday, we set our sights on the playoffs by predicting which eight teams comprise the Eastern Conference playoff bracket. As a follow-up, we will now shift our focus to the Western Conference and project the eventual representatives.

The Western Conference is decidedly stronger than the East this year based on team records. As of Friday, the team in ninth overall place in the West, Golden State, boasts a record of 14-13. This record would be good enough for 4th in the East, but unfortunately places the Warriors in the lottery based on the loaded Western Conference.

Were the season to end tonight, the Western Conference playoff representatives would comprise, in order, of Oklahoma City, Portland, San Antonio, Los Angeles (Clippers), Houston, Dallas, Phoenix, and Denver. This current standing is a result of some unexpected early season performances.

Portland has been the most surprisingly upstart team of from the West so far. A balanced rotation and lethal offense has given way to a league-best 22 wins. An equally surprising playoff team, as of today, is Phoenix. Loaded with young talent and playing cohesively under first-year head coach Jeff Hornacek, the Suns appear well-suited to compete for a playoff berth.

It may be easier to predict the playoff representatives by eliminating the teams set on “tanking” this season. Sacramento and Utah, though they both play host to an abundance of young talent in players like DeMarcus Cousins, Ben McLemore, Derrick Favors, and Trey Burke, would be better suited to set their sights on the NBA Draft, when college phenoms Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker, and Julius Randle are expected to declare for the pro’s.

For four of the teams currently out of the playoff mix, injuries have been a source of collective misfortune. Golden State, at ninth, lost Andre Iguodala to a hamstring injury for 12 games, posting a record of 5-7. The Los Angeles Lakers, 11th with a record of 12-13, have been derailed by injuries to their entire point guard staff, and Kobe Bryant’s latest injury is sure to set them back even further.

New Orleans was without budding star Anthony Davis for seven days after the sophomore power forward broke his hand, and the Pelicans went 3-4 in his absence. Memphis has likely been the most unlucky team out of all of them, as they have had to play without Defensive Player of the Year Marc Gasol, starters Mike Conley and Tayshaun Prince, and rotational swingman Quincy Pondexter who has been lost for the season.

Of the teams currently outside of the playoff mix, the ones most likely to play their way out of the lottery would have to be Golden State and Minnesota. The Warriors possess possibly the most dangerous offenses led by “Splash Brothers” Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Iguodala’s return to the lineup shores up the team’s defense and allows second-year wing Harrison Barnes to return to the bench.

The Timberwolves have lighting it up of the offensive end, coming into Friday scoring the 3rd most PPG at 105.7. Their most apparent struggles have been on the road (5-9) and against other teams in the Western Conference (6-8).

As for the teams most likely to fall out of the playoff picture, Phoenix is definitely the most prime suspect. With the eighth toughest Strength of Schedule in the league, the Suns can be expected to succumb to their lack of veteran leadership, and they would also be better suited to try their luck in the upcoming draft.

We can say with reasonable certainty that there are five locks in the West for the playoffs: Oklahoma City, Portland, San Antonio, Los Angeles, and Houston. Assuming the Suns eventual regression, that leaves three spot for four real contenders in Dallas, Denver, Golden State, and Minnesota. Denver can probably be counted on to stumble a bit without projected starters Danilo Gallinari and Javale McGee, both of whom are without timetables for their returns. They should be able to hang on to one of the last two playoff spots, as fellow competitor Minnesota has the second toughest schedule in the NBA.

We’re counting on the eventual Western Conference playoff bracket consisting of, in no particular order, Oklahoma City, Portland, San Antonio, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Denver, and Golden State. Look for us to revisit these projections as the season winds on.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have completely dominated the Chicago Bulls over the last two months. Given the method both are actively playing heading into Thurs night’s meeting in Oklahoma Town, that trend appears most likely to keep on.

The Thunder (20-4) will become trying to extend the league’s longest energetic winning streak to eight online games. They’re averaging 110.3 factors while shooting 50.1 percent from the floor during their current run.

Oklahoma City is also the only remaining undefeated team at house, becoming the first golf club to start a season 12-0 at house since Cleveland in 2008.

Kevin Durant — who is shooting 54.2 percent from 3-stage range and 56.7 % overall during the winning streak — scored 30 in Tuesday’s 105-93 win at Denver, his league-leading 12th 30-plus stage efficiency.

“It’s a great win,” Durant mentioned after knocking off a group that had won 10 of 13. “We arrived here and defeat a team that plays nicely at home and has been playing really well since the last time we played them. Any earn on the street is hard, so we’ll get it.”

Russell Westbrook also flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 21 points, a season-high 13 rebounds and eight assists. He’s averaging 9.8 assists and 9.2 rebounds during the last six contests, giving Oklahoma City more jump in starting fast-break possibilities.

The Thunder have scored 16 points in changeover Tuesday and are usually averaging 19.0 over the last seven video games.

“It gives us an opportunity force in the crack,” said Westbrook, whose group is 6-1 when he gets at least eight assists. “It will get us into our units a great deal quicker, it gives us a chance to enjoy with a better pace, it gives me a better rhythm and it’s good for our team.”

Oklahoma City has won three directly against Chicago by an typical margin of 16.7 points, including a 102-72 home victory on Feb. 24. Durant was simply 6 of 19 from the field for 19 points, but the Bulls’ capturing percentage of 29.1 was their worst in more than nine years.

Chicago is averaging 80.3 points while capturing 34.5 percent in its final three losses to the Thunder. Joakim Noah and Carlos Boozer are a combined 15 of 48 for 41 factors during that extend.

The Bulls (9-15) haven’t already been much better on offense while shedding six of seven, averaging 81.6 points on 37.8 % shooting. Their criminal offense stalled late in the third one fourth of Wednesday’s 109-94 reduction at Houston, where a 15-1 run by the Rockets that time period put the game out of achieve.

Point safeguard Kirk Hinrich missed his third straight game because of to back stiffness, but he’s anticipated to travel with the group for Thursday’s contest.

“We’re losing, therefore mentally it’s tough,” Noah said. “When you reduce, it’s not enjoyable but we need to maintain battling. The video games keep coming and nobody feels sorry for us and we can’t feel sorry for ourselves.”

NBA Prediction Week 7 Game Preview/Pick- Pelican vs. Warriors

pelic

New Orleans Pelicans (11-11) @ Golden State Warriors (13-12) 12/17- 10:30PM EST

Line: GSW -8.0

Over/Under: 207

The Golden State Warriors, losers of their last two out of three and two in a row look to get back to winning when they host the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday night.

Golden State coach Mark Jackson believes in order for that happen, they must first put in the effort and now is the time, as they get ready to open a three-game home stand.

Much of the problem with the Warriors can be contributed to turnovers due to the absence of primary ball handler Andre Iguodala who has missed the last 12 games because of a starined left hamstring.

The Warriors turnovers per game has climbed to 17.2 per game—among the worst in the league. Shooting guard Stephen Curry has been struggling in the role of playmaker as he has committed 59 turnovers in Iguodala’s absence.

In their game versus the Phoenix Suns, the Warriors committed 20 turnovers in a 106-102 defeat.

Right now the turnovers are hurting us and we are not playing 48 minutes with a sense of urgency,” Jackson said. “We came in talking about we had to be the hardest working team because this team plays extremely hard and they’re talented, and we did not do that. I’m disappointed and we’ve got to find answers, individually and collectively.”

Jackson in his frustration went on to say…. “I am finding that the guys in the suit and tie want it more than the guys in uniform.”

With Iguodala’s return still uncertain, the Warriors (13-12) are also looking to Klay Thompson to getting back to a hot hand, where right now he is shooting just 33.3 percent, averaging 15.0 points, but is just 6 of 20 from 3-point range.

The Pelicans (11-11) find themselves trying to stay afloat as well as their top player Anthony Davis recovers from a broken hand suffered back on December 1st. Guard Tyreke Evans is still out with sprained ankle as well.

The team is 3-3 in Davis’ absence and are in a second game of a five-game road trip, which concerns coach Monty Williams after Sunday’s 102-93 loss to Denver.

We just didn’t have the type of juice that you need to have on the road to win a game,” Williams said.”

The Pelicans are now 4-6 away from home and guard Jrue Holiday adds… “There are a lot games left. This is a big road trip.”

The Warriors have won five straight and seven of their past nine against the Pelicans, the oddsmakers have made Golden State a big (minus -8.0) point favorite against the visiting Pelicans, but get the latest spread on the game up until tip off right here at Wonder Punter.

Despite, the absence of Iguodala, the Warriors are still a dangerous team and I predict them winning big on Tuesday night to open their home stand.

NBA Free Pick and prediction Clippers vs Celtics

Los Angeles Clippers (14-8) @ Boston Celtics (10-13) 12/11- 7:30PM EST

Odds and Lines for this game:

Line: LAC -6.0

Over/Under: 195

In his first visit since May 3rd, now Los Angels Clippers coach Doc Rivers will be at TD Garden in Boston to take on what’s left of his Boston Celtics, in what should be an emotional return.

It will be very nice for me, Rivers said. “I put nine years in there, nine wonderful years. So that’ll be very cool.”

Rivers’ resume in his tenure with the Celtics includes a 416-305 regular-season record, seven playoff appearances, and a 66-16 record in their 2007-08 championship year in which he led the Celtics to their 17th World title.

Rivers also led the Celtics to a seventh-game in the 2010 championship in which they lost to the Lakers and last year were eliminated in six games in the first round by the New York Knicks.

After last season’s playoff departure, Rivers, who still had three years left on his contract, would not commit to returning back to the Celtics as head coach.

Honestly, I just can’t even think about that right now. So I don’t know,” he said. “I need to just detox, and we’ll find that out.”

Boston management decided a different direction was needed to rebuild the organization and do away with its aging players, which Rivers was reluctant to be part of. On June 25th, Rivers was traded to the Clippers for a 2015 first-round draft pick.

Doc Rivers has the Clippers (14-8) in first-place in the Pacific Division after a 94-83 win at Philadelphia on Monday night, as they are in the midst of a season-high tying seven-game road trip.

Boston’s new coach Brad Stevens has the Celtics at 10-13 and in first-place as well in a weak Atlantic Division, although their three game win streak came to end to the Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce-led Brooklyn Nets 96-104 on Monday night.

They played great tonight. Played really hard, really together,” Stevens said. “They took us out of what we wanted to do.”

The new look Celtics only have seven of their 14 players left on the team Rivers coached last year, with point guard Rajon Rondo still recovering from ligament surgery on his left knee.

It’s been Jeff Green (16.7 points per game), Jordan Crawford (14.0) and Avery Bradley (13.5) who are leading the much younger Celtics team.

Despite injuries on the Clippers side with J.J Redick, Matt Barnes and Reggie Bullock, early lines have made Los Angeles a big (minus) -6.0 point favorite on the road, but expect to line to maybe move as game time approaches, which you can get here at Wonder Punter.

I see Clippers’ point guard Chris Paul who is averaging only 8.7 points on 18.8 percent shooting against the Celtics in his last three games to have a big night and even though Boston has won four of five against the Clips at home, I predict Los Angeles making Doc Rivers return to Boston a successful one.

NBA Prediction Thunder vs Grizzlies Week 6 Wednesday Night Game Preview & Pick

NBA Prediction Week 6 Wednesday Night Game Preview/Pick- Oklahoma City vs. Memphis

Oklahoma City Thunder (16-4) @ Memphis Grizzles (10-10) 12/11- 8:00PM EST

Lines and Odds:

Line: OKC -5.5

Over/Under: 191.5

In their first meeting since last year’s playoffs, the Oklahoma City Thunder will try to keep rolling against the short-handed Memphis Grizzles on Wednesday night.

Last year in the Western Conference semifinals, the Thunder couldn’t keep pace against the Grizzles without their star Russell Westbrook… this time around, it will be the injury-plagued Grizzles without their star center Marc Gasol (sprained MCL) who is still out, as well as forward Ed Davis (ankle), guard Tony Allen (hip) and now swingman Quincy Pondexter, who will be out indefinitely with a stress facture in his right foot.

For Oklahoma City (16-4), winners of three straight and 11 of 12 games, are close to full strength and are now once again one of the best in the NBA as they head into Memphis after pulling out a 101-92 victory Tuesday night in Atlanta.

We finally got a couple of stops in a row at the end,” said Thunder coach Scott Brooks, whose team limited the Hawks to 35.6 percent shooting. “Any time you hold an NBA team in the 30s percent-wise in field goals, then you’re doing a good job defensively.”

Kevin Durant stayed hot scoring 30 points along with 10 boards. Serge Ibaka added 19 and 10, while Westbrook struggled shooting just 6 of 21 for 14 points, 11 assists and nine boards.

You have nights when you don’t make shots, but you can’t have nights when you don’t play defense,” said Westbrook, who was credited with four steals. “I take pride in defending every single night and trying to help my team win games.”

Durant since the 2008-09 season, is averaging 29.0 points in 29 meetings against the Grizzles, including the playoffs and will need all they can get as the Thunder have lost three in a row and eight of their last 11 games in Memphis.

The Grizzles are 2-3 in their last five games and are trying to keep it together until they can get some key players healthy.

Guys are stepping up. That’s what we need. We need everybody now, said forward Zach Randolph. “It’s tough. It’s real tough. We’ve just got to come out and play. Everyone has to step up like they’ve been doing.”

Jon Leuer is one of those players who has stepped-up, averaging 15.0 points over his last four games, doubling his season mark of 7.3.

We’ve had a lot of guys go down,” he said. It obviously makes it tough, but it opens up other opportunities for guys to come in and contribute.”

And an all-around contribution is what it’s going to take to beat the hot OKC Thunder who are a (minus) -5.5 point favorite on the road, but get the latest odds up until game time right here at Wonder Punter.

The Thunder are amongst the best in the league with 104.6 points per average, while Memphis as dropped off from last years mark of 89.3 to allowing 96.0 points per game this year.

With a depleted Grizzles team, I predict the Thunder covering the spread and leaving Memphis with a victory.

NBA Prediction Week 6 Wednesday Night Game Preview/Pick- Dallas vs. Golden State

nba picks

NBA Free Pick & Prediction Mavericks vs. Warriors

Dallas Mavericks (13-9) @ Golden State Warriors (12-10) 12/11- 10:30PM EST

Line: GSW -6.0

Over/Under: 209

As the Golden State Warriors prepare for a stretch of a home-heavy schedule that they want to take full advantage of, they first must improve on the defensive side of the ball while riding a hot Stephen Curry.

Warriors coach Mark Jackson believes Curry is playing his best basketball where he is averaging 30.1 points while hitting 26 3s in his last seven games. The fifth-year guard is averaging career highs of 23.6 points to go along with 8.9 assists.

In Monday night’s game against Charlotte, Curry finished had a season-high 43 points, including five 3-pointers along with nine assists in a 115-11 loss.

He’s been playing at a whole different level,” Jackson said. “He’s playing and acting like he’s the best player on the floor night in and night out, carrying us down the stretch, making plays, choosing when to take over offensively and he know when to facilitate.”

But, it’s the defensive play that has Mark Jackson worried as his Warriors (12-10) get set to take on two of the highest-scoring teams in the league, Dallas (103.4) and the Houston Rockets (107.5) on Friday.

But, first up is the Mavericks (13-9), who look to win their second-straight over the Warriors after winning 103-99 in Dallas on November 27th.

Curry had a game-high 29 points and went 6 of 10 from behind the arc in that contest.

Golden State survived a tough stretch in which they played seven of eight on the road, going 4-4, but will now play seven of their next nine games in Oakland, where they are 6-2.

And it’s that home record that has made the Warriors a big (minus) -6.0 point favorite over the Mavs. With the line likely to move, get the latest up to the minute spread up until tip off right here at Wonder Punter.

In the past 11 games, the Warriors allowed teams to hit the 100 mark nine times, whereas in their first 11 games, opponents hit the century mark only three times.

Dallas, who had won three-straight, looks to rebound after losing to the Sacramento Kings 112-97 on Monday night, but with a win against the Warriors can wrap a four-game swing with three victories.

We’re doing great on the road,” guard Jose Calderon said. “It was two (wins) in a row, so we wanted to go four out of four. … We’ve got to try to put that one out (of our minds) and just try to forget about it.

Much of Dallas’ success this season can be attributed the off season signing of ex-Warrior Monta Ellis, who is averaging a team-high 21.5 points per game to compliment Dirk Nowitski, who is averaging 21.1 points per contest.

The Warriors have won the last two overall meetings over the Mavericks and three of four at home against them and it’s with their recent home success that I predict the Warriors winning Wednesday night.

PICK: Indiana

Milwaukee Bucks (2-10) @ Detroit Pistons (4-8) 11/25- 7:30PM EST

Phoenix Suns (6-6) @ Miami Heat (10-3) 11/25- 7:30PM EST

Line: MIA -12.0

PICK: San Antonio

Chicago Bulls (6-5) @ Utah Jazz (1-13) 11/25- 9:00PM EST

Line: CHI -2.5

Over/Under: 183

The Bulls are in a second of a back-to-back and now no Derrick Rose for an extended period of time… but they should still have enough to beat the lowly Jazz.

PICK: Chicago

New York Knicks (3-9) @ Portland Trailblazers (12-2) 11/25- 10:00PM EST

Line: POR -8.0

Over/Under: 196.5

Clearly two teams headed in opposite directions. Knicks winless in five and a total mess right now… Blazers unbeaten in five and play extremely well at home.

PICK: Portland

Friday night in the NBA usually means one thing… a full schedule of games at your disposal to lay your money on. With odds constantly changing, I will give you my straight-up picks on all Friday night games, but be sure to get in on the betting line early to secure the best odds. Whether you like to play the points, over/under or straight-up… you can find it right here at Wonder Punter.

Brooklyn Nets (2-2) @ Washington Wizards (1-3) 11/08- 7:00PM EST

The Wizards look to win back-to-back games as they take on the Nets.

PICK: Brooklyn Nets

Cleveland Cavaliers (2-3) @ Philadelphia 76ers (3-2) 11/08- 7:00PM EST

The Sixers have now lost two in a row after being a Cinderella team for the first three games. Cavs coming off a big win vs. Minnesota

PICK: Cleveland

Boston Celtics (1-4) @ Orlando Magic (3-2) 11/08- 7:00PM EST

The Celtics got their first win against winless Utah, but the Magic just beat a good Clipper team on Wednesday night.

PICK: Orlando

New York Knicks (1-3) @ Charlotte Bobcats (3-2) 11/08- 7:00PM EST

Trouble in the Big Apple with their beloved Knicks… Charlotte is an early surprise. I like the odds of the Bobcats winning.

PICK: Charlotte

Toronto Raptors (2-3) @ Indiana Pacers (5-0) 11/08- 7:00PM EST

Clearly, the Pacers are the team to beat right now. Impressive win against the Bulls on Wednesday night.

PICK: Indiana

Oklahoma Thunder (3-1) @ Detroit Pistons (2-2) 11/08- 7:30PM EST

With PG Russell Westbrook back, expect the Thunder to start making a run. My bet is on OKC.

PICK: Oklahoma City

Los Angeles Lakers (2-3) @ New Orleans Pelicans (2-3) 11/08- 8:00PM EST

The Los Angeles Lakers will be playing the second of a back-to-back. Have to like the odds New Orleans winning plus they blew out Memphis on the road Wednesday night.

PICK: New Orleans

Utah Jazz (0-5) @ Chicago Bulls (1-3) 11/08- 8:00PM EST

Just what the underachieving Bulls needed, a winless Jazz team to come into town. Easy pick on this one.

PICK: Chicago

Dallas Mavericks (3-2) @ Minnesota Timberwolves (3-2) 11/08- 8:00PM EST

The Mavs will look to avoid two straight road losses after dropping one to Oklahoma City Wednesday night. Should be another tough battle for both teams, but see the T’Wolves as the favorite.

PICK: Minnesota

Golden State Warriors (4-1) @ San Antonio Spurs (4-1) 11/08- 8:30PM EST

All the oddsmakers have to be going crazy with this marquee matchup of two teams who are expected to light it up. Watch for the latest betting line here on Wonder Punter, but for a straight-up pick I like the Warriors on the road.

PICK: Golden State

Denver Nuggets (0-3) @ Phoenix Suns ( 3-2) 11/08- 9:00PM EST

With Phoenix coming off a tough road loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night, I like the odds of keeping the visiting Denver Nuggets winless on the young season.

PICK: Phoenix

Sacramento Kings (1-3) @ Portland Trailblazers (2-2) 11/08- 10:00PM EST

Portland is always tough at home… safe pick with Trailblazers.

PICK: Portland

NBA Prediction Game Preview & Pick – Bulls vs. Heat

bullsvsheat

NBA Prediction Game Preview & Pick – Bulls vs. Heat

Chicago Bulls @ Miami Heat 10/29- 8:00PM EST

The Miami Heat may be the team getting their rings on opening night of the NBA, but all eyes will be on the return of Chicago’s point guard Derrick Rose who missed all of last season rehabbing a knee injury as he looks to lead his Bulls to a championship year.

Our No. 1 goal is winning a title,” said Rose, the 2011 MVP who has averaged 21.0 points and 6.8 assists in four NBA seasons. “We’re not worried about anything else. We’re not worried about what people say about us or what’s going on on the outside. We’re just worried about the Bulls and how good we get everyday.”

Chicago, after going 8-0 in the pre-season feels they are geared to make a run at an NBA title and dethrone the Heat who are looking for a ‘three-peat.’

If anything, we accomplished what we wanted to accomplish, which was to go out there and try to win every game,” Rose said. “We know we have important games coming up. We’re just trying to get prepared for that.”

Without Rose last year, the Bulls fell to Miami in five-games scoring an average of only 82.0 points a game while giving up 100.3 per game.

For the Miami Heat, once they receive their rings, Lebron James and the Heat expect all business the rest of the way as they seek their third straight NBA title.

After we get our rings, that’s last year,” said James. “We did some special things last year and this is an opportunity for us to look back at it one more time, but I definitely won’t lose sight of what’s in front of me.”

The Los Angeles Lakers of 2000-02 were the last team to win three consecutive championships.

It would mean everything, man,” James said. “First of all, it means that I’m doing my part and I’m helping our team get better. It would mean everything to our team. That’s what we’re here for. We work our tails off every day. If it can pay off with another Finals appearance, we’d represent the Eastern Conference the best way we can.”

Miami won 27-straight games last season challenging the all-time record of 33 straight set by the 1972-73 Los Angeles Lakers finishing with a 66-16 record.

When you put this kind of talent together, there’s always people on the outside trying to figure out ways why it shouldn’t work,” said Dwayne Wade. “When you’re on the inside and can put it together and show them that it can work, it’s a great feeling.

For us to be able to go to the Finals three straight times and hopefully go again, what more can you ask for?”

The Bulls and Heat split their four regular-games last year.

Most teams suffer a ‘ring ceremony’ hangover, and I expect the Bulls to come out with a sense of urgency to prove to the Heat they mean business in 2013-14.

PICK: Chicago Bulls
