"I can think of no higher opportunity than the alternatives that I've had, three of the largest cities and basketball franchises [in] Chicago, Los Angeles and now to return again where I began. It's a fantastic feeling."

He confirmed that his contract is for five years. Financial terms weren't released, but sources instructed ESPN.com last week that he will obtain $12 million annually.

"I'm on no account an skilled in basketball," Dolan mentioned. "I'm a fan, but my experience lies in managing corporations and new companies. So I believe I am a bit out of my ingredient when it comes to the team. I've found myself able the place I've wanted to be extra part of the choice-making for a while. It wasn't something essentially that I wished to do. But as chairman of the company, I felt obligated to do it.

"I'm blissful now that we now have the group of Phil and Steve to do this, and my entire job here now is supporting them to win a championship."

Later, in an interview on ESPN ninety eight.7 FM's "The Michael Kay Show," Dolan made it clear that Jackson would have full autonomy.

"Phil Jackson is in charge of all basketball decisions. Interval," the proprietor said.

The Knicks have not won a title since Jackson captured his final as a participant in 1973. On Tuesday, Jackson was asked if he was worried that failing to ship a title with the Knicks would have a adverse influence on his repute.

"I think that this is an opportunity, and that is what I take a look at it as, not as a attainable failure probability," the Hall of Fame coach said. "It's just a great opportunity to do one thing that I love, and that is be with a basketball team, hopefully create a group that loves one another and performs with one another."

Dolan, Jackson

Knicks proprietor Jim Dolan, left, mentioned Tuesday he'll "willingly and gratefully" cede all energy to new team president Phil Jackson. GM Steve Mills is at proper.

The Knicks' courtship of Jackson began in December when Dolan met Jackson at a celebration hosted by music mogul Irving Azoff. Dolan said he initially talked to Jackson about coaching the team but the dialog quickly moved to Jackson taking a front-workplace place.

Jackson, who stated he is stayed away from teaching due partially to his physical condition (he stated he's had 5 surgeries lately), grew intrigued with the possibility of operating the crew as he continued discussions with Dolan. Jackson added that at no point did he get into severe discussions with the Lakers about joining their group.

Jackson takes over a group that has carried out well below Dolan's expectations this season. New York is thirteen games under500 and in ninth place within the Japanese Convention, although the workforce has gained six in a row.

Jackson will face several robust selections in his first offseason as president, the most important of which is what to do with free agent-to-be Carmelo Anthony.

The staff's new president backed the All-Star ahead Tuesday.

"There's no doubt about Carmelo being one of many high scorers within the league, possibly the most effective particular person isolation player in the recreation," Jackson mentioned. "I have no problems with committing to saying Carmelo is sooner or later plans."

Anthony, who has said he plans to choose out of the final 12 months of his contract this summer season, can sign a cope with the Knicks that is one year longer and value $33 million more than any pact he can sign with another team. He has mentioned that his precedence is to re-signal with the Knicks, but he would like to sit down with Jackson and focus on the crew's plans earlier than making a choice.

Jackson additionally will possible have to hire a coach in the offseason. There's widespread speculation that Mike Woodson will be let go at the end of the season. Jackson disciples comparable to Steve Kerr, Brian Shaw and Kurt Rambis are considered potential candidates.

Concerning Woodson, Jackson mentioned the 2 may have discussions about the coach's future in the coming weeks however made no guarantees that he'll be again subsequent season.

One factor Dolan would guarantee for subsequent season: Season-ticket costs will not be raised, he said.

Jackson's fiancee, Lakers president Jeanie Buss, knew Jackson was prepared for a brand new challenge.

"It was clear that Phil wanted to return to work," Buss mentioned in an interview with Time Warner Cable SportsNet. "He'd spoken to different organizations. Me personally I like having Phil around. However there was no role for him with the Lakers. He is too good of a basketball thoughts to sit at home in a rocking chair playing solitaire."

One individual exterior of New York especially pleased to see Jackson's return to the NBA is Dallas Mavericks proprietor Mark Cuban.

"My bucket boy is back," Cuban said jokingly, citing his favourite time period for Jackson through the verbal sparring periods when Jackson coached the Lakers.

Cuban added: "It's great simply because of the legacy, the pedigree, the questions. Can he do it again? He is gained in every single place he is gone, together with his first stop in New York, so can he do it once more?"

Tuesday's announcement brought Jackson back to town where his enjoying career started.

He recalled his first journey into New York as a player in 1967. Coach Red Holzman and his spouse, Selma, drove Jackson from Kennedy Airport to Manhattan. The trip was interrupted when somebody on a freeway overpass threw a rock that cracked Holzman's windshield.

"Red regarded up and stated, New York isn't the easiest place to reside," Jackson mentioned with a laugh. "But when you can make it right here, you may make it anyplace. That is the place the phrase began. I swear. So we're going to make it here."

Hernandez named suspect 2012 double murder

More trouble looms for Aaron Hernandez.

(More trouble looms for Aaron Hernandez.
A search warrant released Tuesday and obtained by theHartford Courantnames former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez as a suspect in a 2012 double homicide in Boston.

In the early morning hours of July 16, 2012, two men were murdered inside a car while sitting at a stoplight. The gunfire is alleged to have come from a silver SUV – which was later found at Herndandez's uncle's home – and police believe Hernandez was in the car.

The warrant does not detail, however, whether any evidence is present that suggests that Hernandez pulled the trigger. The former Patriot first became a suspect in the double homicide after the murder of Odin Lloyd, which occurred in June of last year. Police say they were able to link the crimes based on a tip from a security guard at Rumor, a Boston nightclub, who said that he had overheard a conversation regarding the crimes.

The report states that Hernandez and another man, Alexander Bradley, can be seen on surveillance video entering Cure Lounge together the night of the double murder. They are later seen exiting and leaving in the silver SUV, but what happens beyond that point is unclear.

The victims, though, can be seen exiting about an hour later, and, according to the

, a car "resembling" the SUV in question can again be seen in the area. Furthermore, the report indicates that bystanders gave descriptions that roughly matched Hernandez, Bradley, and the silver SUV.

The shooting occurred shortly thereafter.

Charges have yet to be filed against anyone in the double homicide, though police have seized both the silver SUV and the murder weapon. Hernandez currently stands charged of Lloyd's murder.

The Yankees Once Had a Sad, Dumpy, Pinstriped Mascot Named Dandy

Crooked cap? Ginger handlebar mustache? Body like a bowling pin? It could only imply one thing … you guessed it: former New York Yankees mascot “Dandy.”

Just lately MLB’s Reduce four via Sports Logos.internet remembered the lengthy-forgotten Yankees mascot, which briefly walked the earth from 1979-81. Admittedly this can be a little before my time and it’s the primary time I’m ever getting a have a look at this guy. Dandy looks extra like a harebrained thought George Constanza cooked up when he was attempting to get fired by the Yankees, slightly that one thing that really occurred.

Remember, the Yankees delight themselves on traditions and guidelines akin to no names on the again of jerseys, no alternate uniforms, no facial hair except for closely cropped mustaches, and many others. So in that regard, Dandy’s days had been at all times numbered.

Contemplate this, the beloved Montreal Expos mascot Youppi was, ahem, born the same yr as Dandy. Though the Expos ceased to exist in 2004, Youppi and his saxophone dwell on — now pulling his patented brand of frivolity at Canadiens video games.

As it stands, solely four teams in the majors do not presently make use of a guy in a mascot costume — the Cubs, Angels and Dodgers. The Dodgers, briefly, had a mascot when that dude dressed up as a dancing bear through the playoffs. Nevertheless the person behind the stunt solely earned a stadium ban for his efforts.

As dopey-trying as Dandy might need been, not less than he didn’t trigger nightmares like Pierre the Pelican. [Photograph via Minimize four]

Ortiz named MVP after hitting .688 vs. Cards

BOSTON – Most Priceless Papi.

David Ortiz walked off because the World Series MVP on Wednesday night, capping a dominant week through which he spurred the Boston Purple Sox over St. Louis with a mix of energy, patience and a most timely pep speak.

Ortiz hoisted reliever Koji Uehara after the final out of a 6-1 win, then Large Papi raised the gleaming gold trophy in his crowning achievement.

“I know I’m one of many forces for this ballgame and I prefer to take things private,” he stated. “And that’s been my complete profession, a challenge.

“I wasn’t trying to be the man, but I do know I received to get something done to keep the line shifting. I don’t even have to do something at present, I assume, the rest of the staff took over.”

Now a three-time champion, Oritz is the final hyperlink to the Crimson Sox workforce that swept the Cardinals in 2004 and ended an 86-yr title drought.

“He just keeps writing new chapters,” general manager Ben Cherington. “I know nice gamers are great, are more likely to be great in any second but it surely’s arduous to see him in these moments and never suppose that there is something completely different about him. He is locked in. We’ve seen him locked in before but to do it on this stage, and do it in so many large moments, I am unable to add anything extra to the legend that is already there, but he retains writing more chapters on his own.”

After some time, the Cardinals merely gave up attempting to get him out. Ortiz walked four times – three of them intentional – within the 6-1 win Wednesday night in Recreation 6 that clinched the championship.

Ortiz CelebrationMVP David Ortiz hugs supervisor John Farrell after a World Sequence that noticed him acquire six RBIs.

When Ortiz came to the plate for the last time, within the eighth inning with the end result safely in hand, Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina stood up and spoke to him within the batter’s field. Molina softly patted Ortiz twice on the facet, too.

Effectively accomplished, pal.

Ortiz watched 4 extra large ones and trotted to first base, having piled up totals that not even slow-pitch softball players dream about: He reached base a whopping 19 occasions in 25 plate appearances – the second-most in a single World Series behind the Giants’ Barry Bonds (21) in 2002.

The sellout crowd broke into thunderous chants of “MVP! MVP!” every time Ortiz batted. Fairly a turnaround for the 37-year-previous slugger who badly slumped within the AL Championship Collection.

Ortiz hit eleven-for-sixteen (.688) with a 1.948 OPS, two home runs and six RBIs in opposition to the Cardinals, and just missed a grand slam when Carlos Beltran robbed him by reaching over the short bullpen wall. By comparison, the remainder of the Purple Sox hit169 with a 484 OPS and two home runs.

Asked to explain Ortiz, manager John Farrell paused.

“Well, I would in all probability moderately let his bat do the talking, as a result of it’s pretty particular,” he stated.

Ortiz also drew eight walks and legged out just a few infield hits, helped by St. Louis second baseman Matt Carpenter taking part in method out in shallow right area. At one level, Ortiz tied a Series file by reaching base in nine straight journeys.

“He is as hot as anyone you’re going to see this time of 12 months,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. “We tried to make powerful pitches in tough conditions, tried to pitch around him at occasions.”

Ortiz’s760 on-base percentage and batting average had been the second-highest in Sequence historical past, trailing only Billy Hatcher’s marks of800 and750 in 1990 for Cincinnati.

As Ortiz got here up within the first inning, Molina and plate umpire Jim Joyce talked about him.

“This man’s unbelievable,” Molina said on Fox audio.

“He is fun to observe,” Joyce mentioned.

Yet for all the impact he made swinging the bat in getting 11 of Boston’s 41 hits – or just standing there and watching the Cardinals pitch around him – Ortiz made an equally vital contribution along with his words.

With St. Louis leading the Sequence 2-1 and the Red Sox scuffling in Recreation four, Ortiz known as his bearded band together for an impromptu huddle in the dugout.

Ortiz mentioned he merely advised the fellows to loosen up, keep loose and respect the moment. His teammates advised a special story after Boston rallied to win.

“It was like 24 kindergartners looking up at their instructor. He obtained everybody’s consideration and we appeared him proper within the eyes,” stated Jonny Gomes, who answered with a profitable dwelling run. “That message was fairly powerful.”

That is also what the Purple Sox count on from their Dominican-born thumper, identified for his neatly tailor-made suits and dazzling diamond jewelry.

Whatever the Purple Sox want, and whenever they want it, he’s ready. When the Collection shifted to St. Louis and there was no designated hitter, he adeptly moved from the DH spot to first base.

He did the identical factor method back in the 2004 Collection, and once more in 2007 when the Pink Sox swept Colorado.

As the Crimson Sox celebrated on the field after the ultimate out, Ortiz considered what it meant to win a 3rd title. Straightforward, he answered.

“That means I’m getting old,” he mentioned.

Colt McCoy named Colin Kaepernick’s backup despite uneven performance for 49ers

(USA In the present day Sports activities Photos) Colt McCoy hoped to play well within the 49ers’ preseason game against the Vikings Sunday night for certainly one of two causes. He both wanted to prove that he deserved to be on the roster, or perhaps increase his commerce value to a team that truly desires him.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”18″]

McCoy appeared on the surface to have failed at each. But seems to be can be deceiving. Despite a sub-par efficiency, McCoy apparently has won the backup job. So said head coach Jim Harbaugh after the game.

Rumors had whirled prior to the sport about McCoy’s future in San Francisco after the 49ers added Seneca Wallace, their fifth quarterback, to the roster. However the first a part of Branch’s tweet — the half about McCoy restructuring his deal — likely helped agency up McCoy staying in San Fran.

After Colin Kaepernick’s night time was carried out against the Vikings, McCoy entered midway through the second quarter and truly acquired right into a rhythm, hitting a couple of excessive-share passes and escaping heavy stress just a few times. However Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway hoodwinked McCoy by faking a blitz and dropping into protection, snagging his fifth pass of the game and intercepting it.

The 49ers gave the impression to be calling a fairly vanilla sport with a whole lot of protected passes for McCoy, maybe wanting to spice up his confidence — and, simultaneously, his trade worth. Although he completed 11-for-15 passing, he threw for less than 109 yards (with a number of of these coming after the catch) and was sacked as soon as. McCoy’s finest throw of the evening was a pleasant contact cross downfield for 19 yards to new receiver Jon Baldwin.

Now what happens to the opposite quarterbacks on the roster? Seventh-rounder B.J. Daniels changed McCoy and continued his stable play this summer; he seems to be a greener version of Kaepernick, perhaps without the “wow” traits. And whither Wallace? Might the 49ers think about preserving four quarterbacks considering that Wallace also has flexibility as a receiver? (Sorry, Scott Tolzien. We’re counting you out right here.)

With the previous Heisman runner-up and national champion at Texas apparently assured of a roster spot, there’s some real intrigue about what the 49ers will do. Yes, one of the hallmarks of this 49ers regime is knowing when to turn the web page. They dumped 2012 first-rounder A.J. Jenkins in a deal for Baldwin. But after buying and selling two draft picks (a fifth and a seventh) for McCoy and a sixth-rounder, the 49ers apparently need to hold him around a little bit longer.

Blaine Gabbert named Jaguars’ starting quarterback, but he’ll miss rest of the preseason

(USA At the moment Sports activities Images)

Funny things are taking place in Jacksonville.

First, Blaine Gabbert played well within the preseason win over the Jets. Good for him.

Then, he suffered a hairline fracture his thumb in the same recreation. Not so good for him.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”20″]

So on Monday, the Jaguars introduced Gabbert will likely be their beginning quarterback for the regular-season opener the Chiefs on Sept. 8, and in addition that he’ll miss the rest of the preseason due to the thumb harm.

Got it? Solely the Jags.

Of course, Gabbert Mania is spreading, and his standing as a Real American hero actually has something to do with that.

Truthfully, the third-12 months quarterback from Missouri has loads to show. His first two seasons have been mostly underwhelming. Yet, new coach Gus Bradley might be his third head coach in as many seasons, so Gabbert will get the possibility to begin contemporary.

He did well in that game towards the Jets, finishing thirteen-of-sixteen passes for a hundred sixty five yards and leading two scoring drives in his three possessions. His fundamental competitors, Chad Henne, couldn’t pry the job free: He completed a mere 4-of-10 passes for 30 yards with a decide and a sack against Jets second- and third-teamers. Yuck.

Bradley expects Gabbert to be out two weeks however back in time to get ready for the Chiefs. Simply in time to proceed his hero campaign.

Why a Missouri school’s teams were named to honor a South American revolutionary

If you had a South American revolutionary as the inspiration behind the perfect mascot in Missouri in your office pool, go forward and pat your self on the again.

One of these teams is called the Cardinals. The other has a much more unique South American mascot — Webb City Booster ClubOne of these groups is called the Cardinals. The opposite has a much more distinctive South American mascot — Webb City …

Yes, inexplicably there is a group known as the Bolivar (Mo.) High Liberators. Yes, they’re named after former Venezuelan dictator Simon Bolivar. And sure, the town began with a way more conventional mascot — the Tigers — earlier than taking on the Liberators mantle.

According to USA At the moment, the impetus for adopting the Liberators got here from the 1948 dedication of a statue to Simon Bolivar in Bolivar Missouri by then President Harry S. Truman and Venezuelan President Romulo Gallagos. Evidently the presidents were inspired by the truth that the town was named Bolivar to mark the town’s name with a statue of the well-known politician and navy leader who shared its title.

FlickrMascot Quest 2013 — Flickr

Three years later, the native highschool voted to change its mascot from the Tigers (let’s face it, there are plenty of Tigers) to the Liberators (much more distinctive).

The nickname stuck and stays immediately, when it stands as the state’s single-greatest school moniker.

Other Nice Missouri Mascots of Observe:

The Liberators might have the strongest thematic case to be the state’s greatest mascot, however there are many one-of-a-form staff nicknames in the Present Me State. Chief among them are the Hickman (Mo.) High Kewpies.

The workforce was named after a secretary’s doll that was somehow positioned in the course of a basketball court docket throughout a recreation … after which had your entire recreation performed round it. A wierd tactic for sure, but actually a memorable one.

The Maryville (Mo.) Excessive groups are named after a fictional breed of dog. There is no such thing as a Spoofhound, but longtime Maryville football coach L.E. Zeigler saw a plaster dog known as a Spoofhound at a carnival once and berated his gamers with the time period (he apparently felt that Spoofhounds have been lazy), only to have the nickname stick for the entire athletic division.

It’s rare that a faculty can get away with a mascot that for all intents and purposes is derogatory, but the Unionville (Mo.) Putnam County High Midgets appear to have achieved just that. The school is thought to have taken on the nickname as a result of it fielded very quick teams in a sure span. That’s an affordable genesis for the nickname. Whether or not that’s reasonable justification to use the time period Midget as a mascot is another question entirely.

Glenn Robinson has a son named Gelen who committed to Purdue, but not for basketball

Glenn Robinson remains one of Purdue’s most famous past students. The former Boilermaker and Bucks forward who tore apart the Big Ten en route to the top spot in the NBA Draft has long since retired from the NBA, but “Big Dog” is still making an impact at his former school, now via his offspring.

Glenn Robinson's son Gelen has committed to play football at Purdue — Rivals.comGlenn Robinson’s son Gelen has committed to play football at Purdue

First, it was Glenn Robinson III turning down Purdue for a spot at Michigan and an eventual berth in the NCAA national championship game. Now, the elder Robinson’s younger son, Gelen, is trying to right the family’s Boilermaker legacy by committing to the school … for football.

As reported by Nortwest Indiana Times and Rivals.com, Gelen Robinson — yes, Glenn Robinson really named his second son Gelen (remember, Glenn was already taken) — committed to play football at Purdue in part because of his father’s legacy at the school, even though Gelen will attempt to star in a different sport.

“Obviously, I have a good family connection there. My dad went there, so I wanted to go there, too. It was about me being my own self. It was really important they didn’t recruit me because of my dad. They recruited me because of me.”

While it’s far too early to determine if Gelen will be able to replicate his father’s success on a different field of play, he certainly has all of the tools to do so. A 6-foot-1, 231-pound physical dynamo, Gelen is among the nation’s most highly regarded defensive ends, though he could transition to linebacker at Purdue.

Rivals.com ranks the younger Robinson as one of the top-5 overall prospects in the state of Indiana, where he starred for St. John (Ind.) Lake Central High with 95 tackles and 13 sacks.

If those stats aren’t gaudy enough for a junior, consider this: According to MaxPreps, Robinson is also the reining state wrestling champion in the 220-pound division and was the state runner in both the discus and shot put event during the Spring track season.

Something tells us the fact that Gelen Robinson is related to Glenn Robinson — or perhaps to both Glenn Robinsons — will get a lot more attention than his shot put and discus work, at least for everyone besides the Purdue track and field coaching staff.

Diamondbacks’ Matt Davidson named MVP of Futures Game after homering

NEW YORK — If you hit a home run at a Major League Baseball stadium, it’s kind of like pulling a fire alarm on a starship. Sirens go off, lights blare, pyrotechnics explode and people scream. And, at Citi Field, a giant apple is activated.

Not that Matt Davidson of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization noticed. When he went deep for a two-run homer Sunday at the MLB Futures Game, Davidson slipped into his own little world, like he usually does.

“I’ve actually hit a couple of home runs this year and stopped at second base,” Davidson said. “I’m not really good at pimping them.”

Davidson kept going this time, eventually realizing what he had done, and started to enjoy it by the time he got to third base — even if he missed the apple lighting up.

“I didn’t actually see it,” Davidson said. “I was trying to put it all together — like, ‘What is going on here?’ — and I couldn’t help but smile coming around third.”

Davidson had it together enough to be named MVP of the annual top-prospect game, which the U.S. won 4-2, beating the World team.

“It makes you want to work harder and play in a stadium like this,” said Davidson, who plays at Class AAA Reno. “The ball looks a little bigger here. Today it did. Sometimes it probably won’t.”

Davidson’s batting helmet and gloves are being donated to the Hall of Fame in Coopertown, which wanted his bat too, but he wanted to keep it for the home run derby in Reno on Monday for the Triple-A All-Star Game.

No matter where Davidson is playing ball, he usually runs hard after he hits the ball unless he’s positive that he “got all of it.”

“I’m slow, so my first thought is, I’ve got to get to second base, at least,” said Davidson, who ripped a hanging changeup from Oakland Athletics right-hander Michael Ynoa to left-center, giving the U.S. a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

“A changeup ran into my barrel. Luckily I use a longer bat so it hit the end of it,” Davidson added.

So he’s prudent on the basepaths and humble in the postgame interviews. Sounds like a guy who is wise beyond his 22 years. Davidson also seems older because of his major league hair/beard combination. There’s nothing about Davidson’s hair and beard that needs more seasoning in the minors. It’s major league ready now:

Davidson grew up in Yucaipa, Calif. and played on the same high school team as Taijuan Walker, a Futures teammate who pitches for the Mariners organization. Walker (presumably but obviously) colors his hair blond. Davidson swears he was born with white blond hair, and what’s on top of his head today is a remnant of it.

“A lot of people think I dye it because it’s a different color than the rest of my head,” Davidson said. “But no, I don’t. It’s super-thick and it’s tough and it kind of goes everywhere. I’ve been asked about it a lot while I’ve been on the East Coast.

“Honestly, that’s how it is, man.”

Hey, don’t apologize, bud. It’s great hair. Better than any of the other prospects in the room. But what about the beard?

“I started shaving when I was, like, 14. It was crazy,” Davidson said. “My dad taught me how to shave and I had more facial hair than all of the seniors. I remember Coach [Jeff] Stout making me shave. I had to be clean-shaven in high school to be on the team. And they say, the more you shave it, the faster it grows back.”

Davidson is batting291/.354/.500 with 14 homers and 24 doubles for Reno. Someday soon, he’ll get a major league shot with the D-backs. Much about him — not the least of which is Davidson’s hair — is ready.

20 percent of babies born in Bolivian city are named after Neymar

Confederations Cup Golden Ball winner Neymar is only 21 years old, but he’s already one of the few South American footballers capable of making people faint just by looking at him and with his impending arrival in Barcelona, that influence over the consciousness of fans could soon extend to other continents. In the fleeting moments when people are not knocked out cold by his existence, they are apparently busy naming their children after him in large numbers — a phenomenon that has already extended beyond his native Brazil and to the Bolivian city of La Paz.

From Sambafoot:

According to local paper La Razon, two out of every ten babies have been named after the Seleção star.

And they estimate that this trend will only increase with the majority of men in La Paz named after the Brazilian.

“We believe that in 17 years most adult males will be called Neymar because that is the current trend,” civil registry office representative Remigio Condori stated. “It is the name in fashion right now.”

Keep in mind that even Neymar himself didn’t name his son Neymar (he opted for Davi Lucca).

Of course, if Brazil’s leading scorer at the Confederations Cup repeats that feat at next year’s World Cup while Neymar fails to keep living up to his impossibly high expectations, half of Japan could be named Fred in two decades.

LeBron James named NBA Finals MVP for second straight year: ‘I ain’t got no worries’

LeBron James was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2013 NBA Finals on Thursday night, earning his second straight Finals MVP trophy after his Miami Heat won their second straight NBA championship by beating the San Antonio Spurs, 95-88, in Game 7 to earn a 4-3 series win in one of the most thrilling NBA Finals we’ve seen in quite some time.

James was sensational in Game 7, leading all scorers with 37 points on 12 for 23 shooting, grabbing a team-high 12 rebounds, dishing four assists and snagging two steals in 45 brilliant minutes. He averaged 25.3 points, 10.9 rebounds and seven assists per game in the series, shooting 44.7 percent from the floor, 35.3 percent from 3-point range and 79.5 percent from the foul line.

When James accepted the Bill Russell Trophy awarded to the Finals’ Most Valuable Player after the Heat’s 2011-12 championship win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, he said it was “about damn time” he’d won an NBA title and series MVP award in his third trip to the title round. This time around, he was a bit more circumspect, opening his remarks by giving credit to the Spurs as a first-class organization and a team that had given his Heat its toughest challenge since James joined Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in South Beach in the summer of 2010.

James did the lion’s share of his Game 7 damage with his jump shot, a tool he’d worked tirelessly to improve but had seemed to abandon him as San Antonio defenders repeatedly sagged off him and packed the paint to cut off driving lanes to the basket. Early in the series, those midrange jumpers (14 for 38 through six games) and 3-point looks (7 for 24) weren’t falling for James. But in Game 7, when he needed them most, his stroke was true, going 9 for 20 outside the paint, including 5 for 10 from long distance, to give the Heat a needed deep threat on a night where Ray Allen, Mike Miller and Mario Chalmers combined to shoot 1 for 13 from 3-point range.

ABC sideline reporter Doris Burke asked James about how it felt to finally find the rhythm on the jumper after all the time he’d invested in improving it.

“I work on my game a lot,” James said. “Throughout the offseason, I put a lot of work into it. And to be able to come out here and [have] the results happen out on the floor is the ultimate.. it’s the ultimate. I’m at a loss for words.”

Luckily, that wasn’t the case when it came time to discuss the seemingly endless outside pressure and electron-microscope-level scrutiny James faces.

Heading into Game 7, plenty of ink was spilled and words exchanged about how every game seems like the biggest game of LeBron’s life and, in the eyes of some, will always serve as some sort of referendum on James’ talent, demeanor and place among basketball’s immortals. When Burke asked how he’s managed to continue to perform at such a high level in the midst of all those external stresses, James reached for some inspiration from noted NBA fan/philosopher Lil Wayne.

“Listen, for me, I can’t worry about what everybody say about me,” James said, as the AmericanAirlines Arena faithful cheered. “I’m LeBron James from Akron, Ohio, from the inner city. I’m not even supposed to be here. That’s enough.

“Every night I walk into the locker room, I see a number 6 [jersey] with ‘James’ on the back,” he continued. “I’m blessed. So what everybody’s saying about me off the court don’t matter. I ain’t got no worries.”

What he does have, though, is one of the most impressive 18-month stretches in NBA history, with consecutive regular-season Most Valuable Player awards, consecutive NBA titles and consecutive NBA Finals MVP trophies bracketing an Olympic gold medal. While a 2013-14 season that starts in 133 days will surely give him plenty to gnash his teeth over, on this night, LeBron James has the basketball world on a string, and there’s not a thing in that world that he’s got to worry about.
