Joe Nathan and Grant Balfour are free brokers, amongst others, however we are able to cross former Giants closer Brian Wilson off the listing. Why? Look:

Brian Wilson’s agent informed Brian Cashman that Wilson will not shave his beard. “Cross him off the checklist,” Cashman mentioned.

— Mark Feinsand (@FeinsandNYDN) November 13, 2013

The Yankees have had a pretty strict facial hair coverage – neatly groomed mustaches only, no hair below the lip – for decades now, a policy the right-hander desires no a part of. Keep in mind, Wilson reportedly turned down a cool $1 million to shave his beard earlier this 12 months.

In 24 games with the Dodgers after returning from his second Tommy John surgery, Wilson allowed one run whole in 19 1/3 innings between the regular season and postseason in 2013. His fastball sat within the mid-90s and his slider was a wipeout pitch.

“It’s disappointing. Can’t do anything about it now. It’s carried out. It is disappointing. We fought onerous the entire yr and we fell brief.”

All through the stands, fans blinked back their very own tears.

And after Rivera came off, Pettitte got here out for his own curtain name because the Rays waited of their dugout, not eager to interrupt the moment. Rays supervisor Joe Maddon is a longtime fan of Rivera’s consistency, durability and quiet humility.

But competing – won’t be there no extra. So that little that I used to be there was particular for me.”

Rivera had entered with one out and two on within the eighth to a recorded introduction by Bob Sheppard, the longtime Yankees public handle announcer who died three years in the past.

Mariano Rivera bobblehead night had one itty-bitty problem — there were no bobbleheads

By all accounts, the New York Yankees nailed Mariano Rivera tribute day on Sunday. But Mariano Rivera bobblehead day on Tuesday? Not a lot.

Based on Deadspin, the New York Daily News and the Twitter masses, the Mo bobbleheads have been MIA when gates were speculated to open at Yankee Stadium. The bobbleheads hadn’t arrived at the park yet. The throngs of fans waiting exterior have been pressured to attend longer, then finally simply received vouchers.

Speak about critically derailing somebody’s promoting-bobbleheads-on-eBay schedule. C’mon, Yankees, do you think a voucher is worth $500?

Essential times like these are when the Yankees have depended on Rivera, baseball’s all-time saves chief, probably the most all through his profession. How about one last save? How shut do they preserve that jet devoted to him? Think about Rivera flying over Yankee Stadium and tossing bobbleheads out to adoring followers, then parachuting to the sphere while “Enter Sandman” performed. Now THAT’s a farewell.

Since that’s not going to happen, let’s just take a look at some tweets from the scene:

Hey, excellent news, as of 6:48 p.m. ET, the bobbleheads had arrived at the stadium, in accordance with Mark Feinsand of the New York Each day Information. Distributing them won’t be fun. However we’ll continue to wait for phrase on whether Mariano Rivera himself someway saved the day. We’re crossing our fingers.

New York Yankees fan keeps 38-year attendance streak going and it costs him job with city

A New York Yankees fan since he was just a little boy, Joseph Neubauer says he has attended every single house recreation the Bronx Bombers have played for the previous 38 years. Sometimes, sometimes, work conflicts have arisen. No longer.

Neubauer says the Taxi and Limousine Fee of New York Metropolis fired him in July after 27 1/2 years due to one-too-many absences associated, primarily, to playing hooky and going to Yankee Stadium. It’s an workplace job; Neubauer does not appear to be a driver.

Neubauer is appealing, but as Matt Snyder of CBS Eye on Baseball notes, he would appear to have little chance of profitable. About as a lot as the Yankees have of making the playoffs. Nonetheless, a 38-12 months-lengthy streak of going to baseball video games is impressive by itself. He’s seen all of it, from each pitch thrown by Mariano Rivera at house, to all three residence runs Reggie Jackson hit within the ‘seventy seven Series, to George Costanza’s notorious cotton uniform debacle. Factor in that Neubauer was able to maintain his job via 27 1/2 of those years is doubly impressive, though the subtleties of civil service jobs in New York may need made it easier for him to pull it off.

Neubauer has gotten in trouble before for skipping work. He has endured suspensions, such because the 60-day penalty he obtained from a decide for going to the All-Star Game in 2011 after having his vacation denied. The yr earlier than that, he was suspended for 25 days for calling in sick 13 instances so as to attend Yankees games. 13! That’s four greater than Ferris Bueller.

Nonetheless, evidently an absence from Sept. 19 2012 was the final straw. From CBS TV in New York:

The Yankees have been rained out the night earlier than and rescheduled for the next day. Neubauer refused to interrupt his 38-year custom and took a day off from work without permission.

“I really feel like I regretted it in a method. I just wish to attempt to come back,” he mentioned.

I really feel like I regretted it in a means. I just want to try to come again.

Oh, is that every one?! Positive! Properly, come on back, Joe!

OKAY, so irrespective of how cool this streak is, Neubauer clearly has been playing with home cash for some time. Nonetheless, before you bury him with frequent sense, learn the official paperwork associated to his firing that reveal different attention-grabbing factors:

• Neubauer attended his first Yankees game at age 10 and, since June 1975 — when he would have been 16 years old — “he has attended each sport played in New York Metropolis.” If the year 1975 is accurate, meaning Neubauer skipped a whole lot of highschool for no less than one year to make this happen.

• Additionally, the Yankees performed at Shea Stadium in ’75 while Yankee Stadium was being renovated. This proves nothing; it’s simply interesting that the streak spans three house stadiums, and that its first season was in Queens earlier than moving the Bronx.

Anyone on the market in Joe’s nook? Are the Yankees going to honor him? Is there any stuff left to offer away from the Rivera tribute? Anybody out there bought a brand new job for him? He is in his early 50s, so he’s nonetheless got some prime incomes years forward. Perhaps one thing with Yankees running a blog…

Metallica to join Mariano Rivera’s retirement party and perform ‘Enter Sandman’ live at Yankee Stadium

(Getty Photos)

Mariano Rivera, the soon-to-retire legendary nearer, has been celebrated at every turn this season — with special ceremonies at each stadium he visits on his “farewell tour” and a beautiful tribute at July’s All-Star Sport. You had to know his group, the New York Yankees, would have one thing rad in retailer for its own Mariano Rivera tribute day, happening Sunday.

How about Metallica?

The band’s “Enter Sandman” is Rivera’s theme tune, played each time he leaves the bullpen and involves the mound to shut out a recreation. It simply so occurred that Metallica carried out Saturday night at the Apollo Theater in New York City. Then, Sunday morning, the chatter started when a stage was being erected in the outfield and the makings of a live performance had been coming collectively. Might or not it’s? Did the Yankees e-book Metallica in Mo’s honor?

Looks like it. Metallica’s appearance hasn’t been *officially* confirmed by the Yankees, however that would not make for a lot of a shock now, would it? The New York media is all over it and the New York Every day News has sources saying this is occurring. After which there’s this photograph, courtesy of the Sportscenter Instragram account that really doesn’t leave much doubt.

(@Sportscenter on Instagram)

That’s just one part of the pre-sport tribute to honor Rivera, who’s baseball’s all-time saves chief with 652 profession saves (and counting). Mo’s number forty two has been painted onto the field and a lot of ex-Yankees are expected to be in attendance, from Reggie Jackson to Bernie Williams.

The Yankees will even be wearing caps with a particular patch to honor Rivera. According to cap-maker New Period, that is the first time an MLB group might be honoring an energetic participant on its cap.

You can guess, given the revelry surrounding Rivera this yr, the Yankees have much more deliberate for Sunday’s ceremony that we’ve not heard about yet.

Derek Jeter’s season is over, as Yankees put him on disabled list again — what about his career?

(USA Immediately)

Derek Jeter

has virtually as many disabled record trips this season as he does RBIs.

The Yankees put Jeter on the disabled record again Wednesday, the fourth time this yr, and the ultimate one — this will end his season. Jeter’s been hobbled since breaking an ankle in final yr’s playoffs. First, there was the setback in spring training. Then the setback in mid-April.

Jeter returned in July, then obtained damage once more in his first sport back. He’s handled quite a lot of leg-related points since then — a quad, a calf and now the ankle again. He was pulled from Saturday’s recreation after feeling soreness in his surgically repaired ankle, and he hasn’t played since. This was the foreseeable end to a irritating season for the Yankees Captain. Between all of the DL journeys, Jeter performed in 17 video games with 12 hits and a190 batting average. He hit one homer and knocked in seven runs.

The Yankees acquired Brendan Ryan from the Mariners on Tuesday, as Jeter “insurance coverage.” However now he is more than that. Ryan cannot be added to the postseason roster, nevertheless, ought to the Yankees make it. Basic supervisor Brian Cashman mentioned Wednesday Jeter wouldn’t return for the playoffs either. Right now, they’re two games back in the AL Wild Card standings.

The bigger question as it pertains to Jeter is whether that is the end of his season, or just the tip. He’ll be 40 next June, and while this is not the best way his Corridor of Fame career ought to finish, it might be his body making the choice for him.

Mark Feinsand of the New York Each day Information wrote in Tuesday’s newspaper that when Jeter decides it’s time to retire, he is not possible to give us a farewell tour and a season’s discover like Mariano Rivera. But Feinsand did not think — before Wednesday’s news, mind you — that Jeter was ready.

The only thing that could potentially cloud Jeter’s future is his contract, which expires this season however accommodates a $9.5 million participant option.

Many contained in the business believe Jeter nonetheless has animosity toward the Yankees for the way the negotiations went down three years ago, so he’ll decline the choice and pressure the Yankees to give him a brand new deal.

A good friend of Jeter’s just lately advised me he thinks the Captain will exercise the choice, returning with a way of function subsequent season. Public sentiment was largely with Jeter last time, however that in all probability wouldn’t be the case if he engaged the Yankees in a combat. Besides, what workforce is offering a 39-yr-outdated shortstop more than $9.5 million anyway?

General manager Brian Cashman advised reporters on Wednesday: “I have not seen Derek Jeter play his final recreation. Nobody has.” Jeter then addressed the media and mentioned he didn’t imagine his career is over.

Despite what Jeter and Cashman say, this may not be the final time reporters are asking questions about Jeter’s future between now and subsequent season, you possibly can wager on that.

MLB releases 2014 schedule with Dodgers and Diamondbacks opening in Australia

Crikey, is this real about Major League Cricket Baseball opening the 2014 season Down Beneath in Australia? Yep, it is truthful dinkum, mate. MLB released the ’14 schedule Tuesday and, as reported in June, the Los Angeles Dodgers will play the Arizona Diamondbacks at the Sydney Cricket Floor on March 22 and 23. These would be the first regular season games ever performed within the Southern Hemisphere, which means the MLB season will open and shut within the fall.

The Ground looks like a stunning facility, based mostly on the picture above.

MLB has opened the season exterior of the U.S. and Canada six other occasions, most recently in Japan in 2012. The one difference this time: You know that Paul Hogan is going.

Other schedule tidbits:

The first Sunday night time sport of the yr will likely be March 30 (groups to be announced), with 14 different opening-day match-ups taking place a day later.

Don’t go, Mo — Joe Girardi says he wants Mariano Rivera to return for another season

Well, this could get awkward.

Mariano Rivera

has been fawned over all season as he heads toward retirement. There have been

all the presents

, the

at each visiting stadium, the

All-Star Sport second

, that

special cap

, the

And now New York Yankees supervisor Joe Girardi is telling reporters he wants Rivera back for another season. Woah, Joe, you’ll be able to’t just go altering all of the plans, man.

Girardi advised that he’ll ask Rivera, forty three, to re-suppose retirement and that he thinks Mo might nonetheless be an excellent closer in 2014.

“I don’t see any reason why he could not do it subsequent year, I do not,” Girardi stated. “He’s made it pretty clear that he does not want to [return], but I all the time say, you know, January rolls around and generally you have a different really feel about what you wish to do.”

Rivera is baseball’s all-time saves chief and he is third in MLB this season with 40 saves. If the Yankees get scorching, there’s an opportunity Mo reaches the 50-save threshold again. Something he is carried out twice in his 19-yr career. It’s apparent Rivera’s resolution to walk away isn’t as a result of his performance is diminishing. Relatively, he made up his thoughts that it was time and announced as a lot through the spring. Requested again by reporters after Tuesday’s game, Rivera said he is sticking to his retirement plan.

“I advised you guys already. I do not know why we’re speaking about this. I’ve already made my determination.”

(Getty Photographs)

For what it’s value: Girardi did say he thinks Rivera will retire. That tells us that either Rivera is a man who sticks to his word, or Girardi knows his personal powers of persuasion aren’t sufficient to change Mo’s mind.

But professional sports activities, as Giradi aptly factors out, have seen various players say they’re retiring, solely to get the itch again the next season. Clemens, Favre, Jordan — it is happens to the best of ‘em.

“I consider he’s going to retire,” Girardi stated. “But as I’ve said, generally when you’re a player within the midst of a season and you’re grinding it out, your thoughts is one factor, however whenever you get away for a couple of months and your physique feels fairly good, your thoughts is another factor.”

Well, let’s all conform to this, if Mo does come back, no extra presents, OKAY? A person only wants one pair of cowboy boots with a Yankees brand on them.

Matt Harvey has partially torn UCL, may need Tommy John surgery

(Getty Images)

If New York Mets ace Matt Harvey actually is

Gotham Metropolis’s Darkish Knight

, we’ve reached the second in his super-hero story the place he is hit a low point and might want to muster all his power to get better.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”19″]

Mets common manager Sandy Alderson introduced on Monday that Harvey has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his proper elbow, a dreaded harm for pitchers that, in Harvey’s case, could require Tommy John surgical procedure. Whether or not Harvey needs surgery or opts to rehab the damage without it is going to be decided within the coming weeks. For now, Harvey will probably be shut down immediately, headed to the disabled listing and sure won’t pitch again this season.

“This was a surprise to all of us,” Alderson stated at a Monday press convention. “Particularly Matt himself. He has not had any elbow ache. Forearm pain can foretell issues with the elbow, however on this explicit circumstance there had been no indications of that. It is not good news, clearly.”

Harvey added later: “It was the last thing I used to be expecting when I went in this morning.”

Harvey has been the brilliant spot for the Mets this season and one of the breakout MLB stars of 2013. He pitched 178.1 innings with a 2.27 ERA and 191 strikeouts, the fourth most in baseball. Harvey began the All-Star Sport for the National League and was a Cy Younger candidate.

As Harvey spoke at Monday’s press convention, he usually referred to preparing for subsequent season, which indicators two things: He is aware of he is accomplished for 2013 however he isn’t in a surgical procedure mindset, since Tommy John would put him on the shelf for a full year.

“I’m going to do every thing I can so I don’t have to get surgery,” Harvey mentioned.

(USA At the moment)

The 24-yr-outdated final pitched on Saturday, giving up a season-excessive thirteen hits in 6 2/three innings against the Detroit Tigers. He took his fifth lack of the season, however extra importantly Harvey reported an increase in the forearm tenderness that’s been bothering him currently.

The forearm points have been relatively latest — at the very least a month or two, Harvey mentioned, however could not pinpoint exactly. Harvey had been undergoing routine elbow therapies since spring coaching aimed toward preventing injuries like this one.

“This weekend it was more discomforting than any previous begin,” Harvey said.

After seeing surgeon Dr. David Altchek (who carried out Mariano Rivera’s ACL surgery), Harvey had an MRI on Monday, which revealed the partial UCL tear. Now, Alderson said, the Mets will wait a few weeks earlier than determining what occurs next.

“The dedication will be made by Matt himself with recommendation from Dr. Altchek and maybe a second opinion,” Alderson said. “These accidents are sometimes progressive, and so it’s conceivable that surgery will be needed. It is conceivable that no surgery shall be obligatory at this time and could also be mandatory sooner or later down the street. We simply need to take the time to see how these info resolve themselves.”

If you’re searching for a recent parallel case, it’s Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Chad Billingsley, whose season ended final September with a partial UCL tear. As an alternative of surgery, he rehabbed the harm by the offseason, went by way of spring training and tried to pitch this season. He lasted a couple starts earlier than re-injuring himself and opting for Tommy John surgical procedure. Another instance, however, is Adam Wainwright who pitched for greater than 5 years after a partial UCL tear.

One surgical procedure-stopping remedy Harvey could seek is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections — one thing that Tommy John-bound pitchers have turned to up to now. There’s debate about whether or not PRP injections help or postpone the inevitable surgical procedure. Baseball Prospectus has a great learn concerning the process. It points that we regularly hear about when PRP injections do not work (see Orioles prime pitching prospect Dylan Bundy) however we do not always hear about once they do. To listen to Harvey speak is to hear someone who may seek the help of PRP injections if they will get him back on the mound faster.

“The very last thing anybody desires to do is have surgical procedure if you do not have to,” Harvey said. “I know the research and the historical past of this sort of injury, that often results in having the surgery, however everyone’s different.”

David Price’s dog Astro receives assortment of gifts from Dodgers

(Getty Pictures) Mariano Rivera is not the only one receiving good presents on the road this season. With David Value’s dog Astro making the cross-country journey for the Tampa Bay Rays first ever sequence at Dodger Stadium this weekend, the sort hosts determined to make the reigning Cy Younger’s canine really feel proper at home with a slew of items, including a pair new chew toys (aka a baseball and a Dodgers blue foam finger).

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”19″]

Of course you are in all probability wondering how this all took place. It definitely wasn’t a surprise on Value’s half or a random act of kindness by the Dodgers. The idea actually took place early in July when Worth playfully prompt the Rays make a trade supply for Yasiel Puig, to which the Dodgers Twitter replied.

Earlier in the week Value confirmed that he accepted the deal on Astro’s behalf by tweeting out a warning.

Thankfully, that wasn’t mandatory. And regardless of that warning (or threat) the Dodgers got here by means of on their end of the bargain.

Yes, there’s a Hi there Kitty bobblehead in there, too. I’m positive Astro will take great pleasure in destroying that.

It almost makes me marvel the place this present bundle would rank among the highlights of Astro’s life over the previous 12 months. It might be awfully robust to beat receiving the keys to the town of Tampa or having your personal bobblehead day, but when you chew on those for awhile they sort of lose their luster. In that case, I believe Astro would have to be most pleased with the Dodgers efforts. They need to no less than hold him busy through the weekend in LA, and maybe even the flight home to Tampa.

Hey, that’s a long time in dog time.

Dodgers rout Rays behind Kershaw, improve to 37-8 since June 22

The Juice returns for season No. 6! It’s almost eligible totally free-company! Stop by every day for information from the action, together with great images, stats, video highlights and extra.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”19″]

The Los Angeles Dodgers are rolling like they’ve few different instances of their history. And now that they are getting contributions from Clayton Kershaw’s bat, properly, that is simply not truthful.

In addition to eight dominant innings on the mound, Kershaw drove in L.A.’s first two runs with a single in opposition to the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday night time. He also scored twice in a ten-2 rout, helping the Dodgers full a 3-game sweep and win for the 37th time in 45 games since June 22. It is the third time in franchise history the Dodgers have gone on a run like this, ESPN studies (additionally in 1953 and 1899). 1899!

The workforce’s greatest player, Kershaw additionally struck out eight and lowered his ERA to 1.88.

”When you rattle off a streak just like the one we’re on proper now, it is probably a little more than luck,” Kershaw stated. ”We’re a fairly good crew proper now, and it’s plenty of enjoyable coming to the yard every single day and winning games. I feel the guys in this clubhouse notice that we’ve got a fairly good alternative here that we do not need to waste.”

They lead Arizona by 7 1/2 video games within the NL West. It’s laborious to imagine the Dodgers as soon as trailed the Diamondbacks by 9 half.

Reds 3, Padres 2 (thirteen inn.): San Diego and Tim Stauffer experienced a most helpless feeling: Getting Joey Votto to make an out whereas driving in the successful run anyway with a sacrifice fly.

Indians 6, Angels 5: The Tribe rallied from five runs down to finish a six-recreation losing streak, but they’ve slipped 7 half games behind the Tigers.

Nationals 6, Phillies 0: Due to Stephen Strasburg’s first career complete recreation, Philly misplaced its eleventh straight on the highway.

Braves 9, Marlins four: Hey, 15 out of sixteen ain’t dangerous.

Orioles 10, Giants 2: It was a nice day for Adam Jones — till…

Mets 9, Diamondbacks 5: Left-hander Jonathan Niese pitched OKAY in his first begin since mid-June.

Cardinals 8, Cubs four: Avoiding the sweep by the Cubs — pause — the Cardinals used Edward Mujica for a save for the first time in 18 games.

Rockies three, Pirates 2: We live in bizarre times when the Pirates can get swept in August and nonetheless hold a 3-recreation lead on the Cardinals for first place.

Mariners 2, Brewers zero: They requested Felix Hernandez if he’d like to pitch the ninth, however he stated no, he was tired, let someone else end. An sincere answer.

Yankees 5, Tigers four: Hey, that’s not right; the storybook closing season of Mariano Rivera appears to have a number of pages ripped out, here! However, not solely did the Yankees get a sport-successful home run from Brett Gardner, they obtained an extended ball from Alex Rodriguez, too:

Royals 4, Crimson Sox three: The Royals are 18-5 since the All-Star break and are 4 half of games out of the second wild card spot.

Athletics 6, Blue Jays 4: Sort of a wild ninth, but Grant Balfour got it performed.

Twins 5, White Sox 2: An enormous inning was the undoing of Jose Quintana, and the White Sox don’t score any runs, in order that was that.

Rangers 6, Astros 1: A 4-hitter for Martin Perez.

”I really feel like ever since the All-Star break, we have been making an announcement. We’re right here to stay and compete.”

— James Shields of the Royals

• The Rays walked Yasiel Puig 4 occasions intentionally within the three-recreation collection.

Prince Fielder triple adds humor to All-Star Game

NEW YORK — He huffed and he puffed until he slid down into third base. Hefty slugger Prince Fielder gave the All-Star Game some comic relief Tuesday night by rumbling around the bases for a triple to lead off the top of the ninth inning.

Fielder, who is listed at 5-foot-11 and 275 pounds — hmm — came in with 10 triples during the regular season for his career. In his All-Star Game experiences, Fielder also has a double and a home run in eight plate appearances. But no three-baggers, until he hit a dying liner to right that Carlos Gomez of the Brewers gambled on with a dive — and lost.

Other than Fielder not needing an oxygen mask after he reached third base head first, the most impressive part of the play might have been NL second baseman Matt Carpenter running into the outfield to back up the play, with center fielder Andrew McCutchen away from the immediate area. Fielder’s slide — often a risky maneuver for him — beat a relay throw by an instant.

(AP) It all looked so.. natural.

“I saw it drop, and then once I saw that really nobody was around it, I figured I had a chance,” Fielder said.

The third-most impressive part of the sequence was Fielder pulling a pitch to right field on a breaking ball located low and away from Jason Grilli. And then there was the giddy reaction by Mariano Rivera:

Rivera’s entrance in the eighth inning in his final All-Star appearance towered over everything else about the game, but that doesn’t mean Fielder’s triple can’t be celebrated too. It was a great secondary highlight for Fielder’s teammate, Justin Verlander.

“Hahaha,” Verlander said when the subject was broached. “Yeah, how ’bout that? I was just thinking, ‘It might be the last time I see that.’ No, just kidding. He’s fun to watch, man. He’s a big boy but he can run. It was fun.”

Fielder’s triple didn’t figure in the scoring, as Grilli retired the next three batters to strand him at third base.

Nothing could get Fielder down about his All-Star experience, even though he was eliminated early in the Home Run Derby and was unable to defend his crown. If he couldn’t be the Home Run King, he could handle being King of the Triples.

“Regardless, it was fun for me, being here,” Fielder said. “My kids had a blast and, for me, that’s the big thing. Them having a good time is me having a good time.”

We had a good time, too, watching Fielder run and slide.

Nine early thoughts on the newly unveiled 2013 All-Star rosters

Yasiel Puig will have to campaign his way on to the NL roster. (USA Today) The rosters for July 16’s All-Star game at Citi Field were unveiled to the public Saturday evening on Fox, and already fans from coast-to-coast are abuzz with excitement and in some cases displeasure over the selections. You better believe we’ll be weighing in with our own thoughts over the next 10 days, and we may even throw in a challenge for the readers. For now though, here are just a few of our early thoughts on the rosters Jim Leyland and Bruce Bochy will be managing in New York.

(A more complete list of the rosters can be found here. Note: Rosters are subject to change… frequently.)

Yasiel Puig included in Final Vote: The most debated potential All-Star coming into the selection show, Yasiel Puig was not named by Bruce Bochy or voted by the National League players as one of the first 34 All-Stars. He will, however, appear on (and very likely win) the Final Vote for the National League. Why do I feel so confident about that?

He’ll be joined on the ballot by Ian Desmond (Washington Nationals), Hunter Pence (San Francisco Giants), Freddie Freeman (Atlanta Braves) and teammate Adrian Gonzalez.

Personally, I wasn’t on board with the idea of Puig being an All-Star two weeks ago. It just felt too soon to make the argument, but his play has been historic. In just 30 games, the 22-year-old outfielder has collected 50 base hits. Only Joe DiMaggio and Roy Weatherly join him in that elite company. He was also named the National League Player of the Month for June, which is the same month he debuted. That’s a remarkable accomplishment, and even if you throw the numbers aside, his aggressive style of play and boundless energy make him a much needed attraction for the game. I’m all in.

The only question now is which candidate will Jonathan Papelbon stuff the ballot box for to help Puig off the team.

(USA Today) Make room for Matt Harvey: As long as New York Mets manager Terry Collins moves Matt Harvey’s start scheduled for next Sunday, the 24-year-old right-hander will get the call to start the All-Star game in front of his home fans. National League manager Bruce Bochy has made that very clear over the past week, so it’s a done deal with Collins’ cooperation. Harvey’s selection wouldn’t be a goodwill gesture, either. Through 18 starts (7-2, 2.17 ERA) he has been the most consistently dominant starter in the NL. His introduction will be one of the many highlights of the night.

American League starting pitcher candidates: Detroit Tigers right-handed Max Scherzer is off to a historical 13-0 start, and with Jim Leyland calling the shots for the AL, he seems to be the most likely selection. That said, I think a case can also be made for Felix Hernandez because, well, he’s Felix Hernandez, and his 8-4 record with a 2.69 ERA aren’t too shabby either.

Three Orioles land in AL lineup: Chris Davis — who connected for his MLB leading 33rd home run on Saturday — not only slugged his way into an All-Star appearance, he was the leading vote-getter for American League players. Much deserved, I might add. He’ll be joined in the lineup by teammates J.J. Hardy and Adam Jones, who were also voted in by the fans. 20-year-old Manny Machado will represent the O’s off the bench.

Pirates closer Jason Grilli. (USA Today) Pirates are invading New York: Not only do the Pittsburgh Pirates possess MLB’s best record, they’re also sending four representatives to the All-Star game. Of course that list includes the face of their franchise, Andrew McCutchen. Joining him will be third baseman Pedro Alvarez and left-handed starter Jeff Locke, but the real noteworthy All-Star from Pittsburgh is 36-year-old closer Jason Grilli. After toiling in the big leagues for 11 years and making 370 appearances, he’s an All-Star for the first time. He’s converted 28 of his first 29 save chances this season.

A little relief: The American League Final Vote has an interesting twist to it: All five candidates are relievers with Joaquin Benoit (Tigers), Steve Delabar (Toronto Blues), David Robertson (New York Yankees), Tanner Scheppers (Texas Rangers) and Koji Uehara (Boston Red Sox) being the options.

Precious Cargo’s: They share a nickname, and now Carlos Gonzalez of the Colorado Rockies and Carlos Gomez of the Milwaukee Brewers may be sharing an outfield on July 16. For Gonzalez, it’s a much deserved second consecutive All-Star selection and start for the National League. Of course an argument can be made that he should be on his third or fourth All-Star game after putting up stellar numbers in each of his first four full seasons, but at least he‘s getting the respect now. As for Gomez, he’ll be making his first All-Star appearance after hitting319 with 13 homers and 41 RBI through Milwaukee’s first 80 games. He also leads baseball with three home run saving catches because yes, defense does matter.

Notable omissions: As always, the list of snubs will end up longer than the list of actual All-Stars, but that doesn’t mean the designation isn’t warranted in many cases. For example, in the American League a strong case could be made for third basemen Evan Longoria and Josh Donaldson of the Oakland A’s. Donaldson’s903 OPS ranks fourth among all third baseman and 11th in baseball. His omission means Bartolo Colon will be the A’s only representative. That, in and of itself, is a remarkable story.

Over in the NL, the two names that stand out immediately are Stephen Strasburg and Freddie Freeman. If you could, please ignore Strasburg’s 4-6 record. He’s deserved a better fate as his 2.24 ERA would indicate. As for Freeman, the NL is obviously stacked at the first base position with Joey Votto, Paul Goldschmidt and Allen Craig getting the nod ahead of him, but his853 OPS suggests he would be a very deserving selection.

(USA Today) One for the road: No surprise here. Mariano Rivera was named to AL All-Star team and will appear in his 13th and final All-Star game at Citi Field. It’s a very fitting end to his Hall of Fame career spent entirely in New York, but the question now becomes will Rivera be given the opportunity to pitch the ninth inning (if there is one for the NL). At one point there was some debate over whether or not Rivera should start the game for the American League just to ensure he takes the hill and gets a proper sendoff. Perhaps we’ll hear that debate heat up again over the next ten days

Mariano Rivera delivers pizza to woman who has worked in Oakland A’s mailroom for 25 years

Former Chicago Bears receiver David Terrell would love you to know that he is NOT the biggest draft bust in Chicago Bears historical past, and he would really like you to know exactly why. Chosen by the Bears with the eighth total decide in the 2001 NFL draft out of Michigan, Terrell caught just 128 passes for 1,602 yards and none touchdowns in four seasons with his first NFL workforce. After the Bears minimize him free, Terrell tried to catch on with the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots, and Kansas City Chiefs, but it did not happen. He played in one game and caught no passes for the Broncos in 2005, and that was the final we really heard of Terrell in a relevant soccer sense.

Until now.

When Redeye Chicago lately placed him excessive on a list of the franchise’s all-time draft mistakes, Terrell contacted the location via e-mail in an effort to provide his personal protection. Terrell set up an interview with the site, and blamed his points within the Windy City on … nicely, just about everyone. Mostly, Terrell cited an absence of quarterback expertise during his time with the Bears.

“My first yr, we was one game from the Super Bowl, and I believe I was a big, huge piece in plenty of those wins. I believe I may have received 4, five video games for my team. I mean, hey, possibly I didn’t win ‘em all on my own, but I sure played a giant half. The following year I went to Bourbonnais [coaching camp] and I kicked the season off with what? Like 4 touchdowns in three games? Then I broke my foot. Then I was done for the entire 12 months. Then my third year I couldn’t play ‘cuz my foot was just broke and so they had my time limited. Then the last yr, I led the league for like the first 4 games with Rex Grossman at quarterback. Until Rex Grossman breaks his foot towards Minnesota. Did you neglect that? I think you musta’ forgot about that. Man, I led the league in like every class mainly until Rex broke his foot. When Rex broke his foot, after that, the season was over. I caught, I mean, I had nine completely different quarterbacks after Rex Grossman. I caught a ball from nine different quarterbacks in one yr. Did you forget that?”

Well, not quite that many quarterbacks. However the list of people who threw passes to Terrell on a regular basis from 2001 by means of 2004 was hardly a Murderers’ Row. There was Jim Miller, Shane Matthews, the 37-yr-previous version of Chris Chandler, Henry Burris, Kordell Stewart, the aforementioned Mr. Grossman, Chad Hutchinson, Craig Krenzel, and Jonathan Quinn. That makes for … hey, Terrell was sorta proper. That’s 9 quarterbacks whole in 4 seasons (not after Grossman), and not a semi-stud amongst them.

So now, you’re pondering, Terrell should watch the Bears with Jay Cutler at quarterback and wonder what might have been? You are darn proper he does. When requested what he would have given to play with a quarterback of Cutler’s talents, Terrell ACTUALLY didn’t mince words.

“(Laughs, for a very long time) I might have cut off both my balls. I’d give those up, no problem. You would have neutered me. I woulda been neutered with a smile. [Bleep], man, for actual.”

Well, alrighty then. After all, Terrell hung out within the Broncos’ coaching camps in 2006 and 2007, and Cutler was also on the roster, and that didn’t exactly work out. However because it was when John Blutarsky gave his famous “Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?” speech, Terrell was on a roll.

“Jay Cutler is surely a high 10 quarterback within the league. Little doubt about that. His data of the game, his pocket presence makes him that. I never witnessed that in the NFL. I could have with Rex, but I had limited time with Rex. I only had four games with Rex, you recognize what I’m saying? Nice quarterbacks know what’s happening earlier than the play. My final year here was simply in disarray ‘cuz the quarterbacks didn’t even know the play calls. So it takes out some camaraderie, yeah. You look at Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall, they’ve camaraderie cuz they had been in Denver collectively. The [bleep] that Jay and Brandon have occurring, that [bleep] is unstoppable. They will look at one another one time and know what’s occurring. … It’s like eye contact [bleep]. They be like, “Yup, yup”–and Boom! Fade route. I didn’t have that anywhere however at Michigan with Tom Brady and with that quarterback Drew Henson or Hanson, or no matter.”

That would be Drew Henson, but as we said, the person was on a roll. Terrell additionally talks about his remorse in not waiting to be selected till the supplemental draft, how a staph infection nearly brought on him to have one among his legs amputated whereas he was making an attempt to make the Patriots, why former Bears normal manager Jerry Angelo didn’t like him, and his newfound respect for single mothers. This interview actually is a should-learn, although it is decidedly NSFW…
