Lakers score 51 in 3rd quarter, blast Knicks

L. A. – With Knicks president Phil Jackson watching from a luxurious suite excessive above the courtroom, his new crew's teetering playoff hopes bought an enormous shove from his previous group's incredible offensive present.

Xavier Henry scored 22 points, Nick Young hit five 3-pointers whereas scoring 20 points, and the Los Angeles Lakers set a franchise file with 51 points within the third quarter of their 127-96 victory over New York on Tuesday evening.

Although the Lakers have sixteen NBA championships and a luminous listing of former superstars, these groups by no means had a quarter to match to the 12 magical minutes played after halftime by Los Angeles' present patchwork roster.

And no Knicks defense had ever given up fifty one factors in a quarter till this staff did it in a key sport for its postseason chase. New York dropped three games behind Atlanta for the eighth playoff spot in the Jap Conference.

"We hit photographs everywhere," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni stated. "It is infectious. If you begin taking good photographs, they begin getting in, and even the hard shots start entering into."

Certainly, the Lakers hit 19 of their 26 photographs with six three-pointers, stretching an eight-level halftime lead to 30. Nine players contributed a discipline purpose to the spree, led by nine factors from Chris Kaman in his first recreation motion in March.

"It feels good, but it solely lasts one evening," stated Henry, who played exceptionally nicely with a torn ligament in his taking pictures wrist. "We've just received to be encouraged for the remainder of the season from it."

Kent Bazemore scored 18 points as the Lakers received consecutive video games for the first time in additional than three weeks with a season-excessive 82 factors from their reserves, including Henry and Younger.

Jodie Meeks had four three-pointers as Los Angeles completed one three-pointer shy of the only-recreation club record in the course of the Lakers' highest-scoring game of the season. 5 players hit multiple 3-pointers, together with three apiece for Henry and rookie Ryan Kelly.

Carmelo Anthony scored 29 points for the Knicks, who have misplaced two straight after an eight-sport winning streak. Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 17 factors and Amare Stoudemire had sixteen within the Knicks' seventh straight highway loss to the Lakers since 2007.

"On the finish of the day, it's simply particular person pleasure," mentioned J.R. Smith, who had 12 points. "It's important to have delight in guarding your man, guarding the ball, and we simply did not have that the final three quarters."

The Knicks are assured of a dropping season with their forty second loss, and the Hawks have two games in hand in the playoff race. Those excessive stakes and Jackson's looming presence weren't sufficient to spur New York to a competent defensive efficiency.

"I believed we came out ready to play," New York coach Mike Woodson mentioned. "I imply, we held them to 14 factors in the first quarter, and then that second and third quarter, all hell broke loose. We just didn't have any reply for them from a defensive standpoint. I thought the plan was good starting the game, and after they went to their bench, they got here out blazing and we simply couldn't management them."

Jackson's fiancee, Lakers government Jeanie Buss, watched from the second row. The eleven-time NBA champion coach arrived late at the constructing the place he received five titles with the Lakers, who declined to re-hire him early last season, infuriating much of their fan base.

With Pau Gasol sidelined by vertigo, Kaman had thirteen points and nine rebounds because the Lakers' starting center. Steve Nash also sat out for the seventeenth time within the Lakers' final 18 games.

The Lakers missed thirteen of their 18 pictures in a 14-point first quarter, however rolled off a 22-4 run in 5 1/2 minutes to open the second. Meeks and Jordan Hill then expanded the Lakers' lead with a 12-zero run early within the third before the Lakers really bought rolling.

Sport notes

Young converted a four-point play in the third quarter. He has six of the Lakers' nine four-level plays this season, each franchise data… Gasol will be re-examined Wednesday before the Lakers decide whether he'll travel with them to Milwaukee and Minnesota this week… Metta World Peace, the former Knicks and Lakers ahead, attended the game. New York waived the former Ron Artest on Feb. 24. He bought a rousing ovation from the Staples Center crowd when he appeared on the scoreboard in the first half, and he sat in Jackson's field during the second half.

Lakers, Mavs maneuvering for Love

Kevin Love, a free agent in 2015, has made it identified he needs to play in a serious market. (USATSI)

The Lakers and Mavericks are attempting to assemble trade offers for potential free agent Kevin Love, but so far the Timberwolves have given no indication they're going to take into account moving the All-Star ahead by Thursday's deadline, league sources told

Love will probably be a free agent in 2015, and it's broadly identified around the league that he and his agent, New York-primarily based Jeff Schwartz, are determined to get him to a major market. The Lakers, Love's first selection, "have the perfect shot" of landing the Southern California native, one individual acquainted with the participant's thinking said. There is no such thing as a incentive within the CBA for Like to signal an extension with Minnesota before he has an opportunity to say no his player option and hit the open market in July 2015.

Giving up vital belongings for Love would be problematic for any team that is not assured it is going to be capable of signal him when he turns into a free agent. That's clearly not an issue for the Lakers.

Nonetheless, different teams are mentioned to be feverishly pursuing a premium first-round decide that may very well be included in a bundle for Love, a three-time All-Star who is fourth in the league in scoring (25.eight factors per sport) and second in rebounding (13.2).

In the long run, it will fall on Timberwolves president Flip Saunders to pull the set off on a Love deal or wait him out and hope he's capable of turn the franchise's fortunes around in time to persuade him to stay. Minnesota has but to make the playoffs in Love's 5 seasons and is probably going headed to the lottery again this year.

In line with a person accustomed to Saunders' strategy, he has indicated there's "no approach" he'll commerce Love by Thursday's three p.m. ET deadline.

Any Lakers supply would have to embrace Pau Gasol, whose $19.3 million contract comes off the books this summer time. Rival executives consider the Lakers' finest likelihood of shifting Gasol is to a staff that views him as worthy re-signing to a more cheap deal this summer time – not as a rental. With Kobe Bryant out indefinitely and the Lakers tied for the fourth-worst report within the league, their 2014 first-spherical choose can have value – but can only be traded if LA can purchase one other first-round choose first. Their 2015 first-spherical pick has been conditionally traded to Phoenix.

During All-Star weekend, Bryant stated the Lakers having cap house this summer time is "right in their wheelhouse" and mentioned he's assured GM Mitch Kupchak would make the strikes obligatory for a "quick turnaround." LA at present has room to signal a max free agent this summer time, however could choose to amass one by way of commerce after which make extra moves in 2015-sixteen, Bryant's final season below contract.

Lakers wind up with only 4 eligible players, still win

Kaman had plenty of room to stretch out in this Lakers' victory. (USATSI)

Chris Kaman experienced plenty of room to stretch out in this Lakers’ victory. (Time Warner Cable)

About 14 minutes into the Wednesday night game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers, we already had a laugher. The Lakers had been winning 45-19 and their 3-point shooting alone would have provided them a 27-19 benefit. They were shredding a showing Cavs team that apparently had both internal and external problems. This isn’t the Lakers if you’re used to either.

They started a selection of Steve Blake, michael jordan Farmar, Wes Johnson, thomas Kelly, and Robert Sacre. It was the second night of the road back-to-back. They were facing a Cavs team in eager need of a steadying triumph. At home against a bad la lakers team with only 8 available players is exactly what a win looks like on a routine. And yet here they were straight down 26 points after 14 minutes of play.Jordan Farmar suffered the cramp during the game and had to leave. Nick younger sprained his knee during the game and was ruled out for the rest of the night. Chris Kaman got into foul trouble and eventually fouled out. Robert Sacre also fouled out, leaving behind the Lakers with simply four eligible players on the court. This is where things obtained funny for the Lakers plus depressing for Cavs followers.

It nevertheless didn’t make a difference. The Cavs reversed their embarrassing prospects of a blowout, but it did not stop the night from being a complete embarrassment. The la lakers were allowed to still perform Sacre after he fouled out. With too many hurt players, the Lakers had been allowed to keep Sacre in the game. Any foul against Sacre in the final 3: thirty-one of the game would result in a technical foul against the la lakers. That means you could turn just about every possession into a three-point chance. It was so bad that actually Steve Nash came out to the bench in the final moments in his uniform, just in case some thing crazy happened. That’s not what the Cavs do though. these people turned a 10-point debt to a broken, third-string la lakers team into an 11-point loss over that last 3: 31. The Cavs never attacked Sacre regularly the rest of the game, instead opting for contested jumpers. Their following six possessions ended in the turnover and five 3-point attempts, not once assaulting the basket where Sacre was awkwardly dancing out of the way of contact. One of those efforts from downtown connected to reduce the lead to eight.

From there, the la lakers hit a couple of 3-pointers of their own, got a couple of Ryan Kelly free throws, and shut out a Cleveland group that has officially hit rock bottom in-season. With roughly 6 minutes left in the game, Kyrie Irving was walking over to the scorer’s table to check in and try to possibly will their team to victory. A minute or two later, Mike Brown known as him back to the along with and tried to finish it out with a lineup of matt Dellavedova, Dion Waiters, chemical. J. Miles, Anthony Bennett, and Anderson Varejao. It’s unclear in case Irving’s retrieval from looking at in to sitting back on the along with was due to a problem between the Cavs’ star and the trainer or just the coach determining to roll with elaborate out there. It’s unclear associated with anything that is going on with the Cavs other than turmoil and turmoil. The only thing we know is this will be quickly becoming an uncomfortable having a laugh stock.

this particular organization has gone from a bunch of young assets plus draft picks poised to make the postseason and lure LeBron James back home to a having difficulties startup company, then to a rejuvenation with the trade for a winning veteran like Luol Deng and back to the team that can’t actually beat a D-League la lakers squad when they have just 5 players available and one of them is a technical upon get in touch with. There’s no chance of landing LeBron and there’s little chance of making the playoffs as they drop to 5. 5 games out of the eighth seed in the eastern. It doesn’t mean that the Cavaliers are dropping Kyrie Irving when he strikes the restricted free company market or that they cannot make moves at the industry deadline or that a dash in the draft can’t change them into the 5-seed in the 2014-15 season. It’s just that four years after wayne took his talents in order to South Beach, they’re still left with as many questions right now as they had back then.

I guess the good news for the Cavs is how can this get any worse?

NBA Prediction Thursday Game Preview/Pick- Lakers vs. Heat

NBA Picks and predictions

NBA Picks and prediction Lakers vs. Heat

Los Angeles Lakers (16-26, 8-15 away) @ Miami Heat (30-12, 17-3 home) 01/23- 8:00PM EST

Line: MIA -12.0

Over/Under- 211.0

On Thursday night, the injury riddled Lakers will travel into Miami in the midst of a season-high seven game road trip to take on the Miami Heat, a team that is 3-2 in their last five but plays great at home in a rematch from Christmas Day.

The Heat (30-12) are coming off a disappointing road trip that saw them go 2-2… disappointing in the sense that we expect more from the two-time defending champs. Overall the Heat, had gone 2-4 in their last six games that saw their defense struggle giving up an average of 103.8 points per game in that span before putting the defensive clamps on the Boston Celtics winning 93-86 on Tuesday night at home. The defense bounced back nicely holding the Celtics to just 39.3 percent shooting on the night.

Even if it wasn’t perfect, the possessions meant something to us, the mistakes meant something to us,” Miami coach Erik Spoelstra told the NBA’s official website. “It starts with that type of pride in our defense.”

This season the Heat is giving up 98.5 points per game, which is up from their 2011-12 season mark of 92.5 and last season’s 95.0 points per contest. Defense wins games and championships and the Heat this season is 25-1 when holding opponents to under 100 points.

It’s the only way we’re going to be able to win games, if we defend,” LeBron James said.

Miami has been without the services of Dwayne Wade for the last three games, who has been hobbled throughout the year with sore knees. The Heat are 6-6 in his absence this season and his status for Thursday is questionable.

It’s difficult doing what we do,” Chris Bosh said. “But that’s why we’re the champs, to do the difficult thing again and get the job done. Tonight was a good start. We just have to build off it.”

And keeping it going for the Heat with the Lakers (16-26), a team that has been hammered with injuries all year, especially at the point guard position, they have to like their chances.

Miami has won three straight and seven and their last eight over the Lakers in the series, including a 103-95 victory back in Los Angeles on Christmas Day.

No Kobe Bryant, no Steve Nash, no Jordan Farmar, no Steve Blake, no Xavier Henry…. injury after injury, a team full ‘whos-who’ it seems like, but they are playing hard and that’s all we can ask for as a fan. Bryant will have his knee re-evaluated next week with hopes of a return date soon to follow.

It’s a good test for us. The Lakers are a really good team, too. They’re just in an unbelievable conference,” James said. And with the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder visiting the Heat to follow the Lakers on Thursday… “Obviously we know what the Spurs and OKC are all about. We’re looking forward to playing against these three teams, but it starts with the Lakers, and then we go from there.”

The Lakers are just 3-13 in their last 16 games and 2-2 on this “Grammy Awards” road trip, but gave away Monday’s game to the Bulls, allowing a buzzer beater layup bucket to lose 102-100 in overtime.

It’s heartbreaking,” said guard Nick Young. “We felt like we were competing and was in it. That’s all we can ask for.”

It’s going to take a another full team effort and hard play from the Lakers if they want to leave South Beach with an upset win on Thursday as the oddsmakers have made the home Heat a huge (minus -12.0) point favorite, but get the latest spread on the game up until tip-off right here at Wonder Punter.

Nick Young has played well off the bench this year and Pau Gasol has stayed hot over his last five games averaging 22.0 points with 12.4 boards but has been ineffective against the Heat over his last three games averaging just 12.0 points.

But, without Kobe and Nash, it’s been tough going for the Lakers, despite playing hard.

It just makes it harder,” coach Mike D’Antoni said. “The biggest thing is how to finish games off because you know where you’re going if they’re on the floor. You’ve got to figure that out.”

As mentioned before, the Lakers will need to play their best to have any chance on Thursday and with the challenge of being in the middle of a long road trip, the odds are against them. If they don’t come out with energy early… the game may get ugly quick and it will be a long night. In the end, too much talent on the Heat to lose this one at home.

Nets Top Heat In 2OT

“None of us can replace CP, ” Griffin said. “We need it from everybody. It’s almost a mental thing, being more locked in. “

Things sure have changed since that October night.

The Clippers under new coach Doc Rivers are fourth in the Western Conference standings; the injury-riddled Lakers are mired near the bottom under Mike D’Antoni.

“Right now, it seems like teams are playing with too much confidence, ” Gasol said. “They’re taking for granted that the Lakers are just an easy game, that they’re going to come out and are just going to score 120, 130 points, everybody’s going to get their points, and it’s going to be a wonderful night. We’ve just got to cut that out somehow. “

The Lakers were so short-handed they had to reinsert starters Johnson and Sacre in the fourth, when the teams’ second units matched up as fans began leaving Staples Center in droves. Marshall rolled his ankle in the third but stayed in the game.

“I just tried to tip the ball in and I came down on Collison’s foot, ” he said. “If I felt like I was hurting the team, then I would have sat down. But I was perfectly fine. “

The Clippers opened the game shooting a season-best 71 percent while scoring 43 points, most in a quarter this season. Redick scored eight of their first 12 points after missing 21 games with a broken right hand and torn ligament in his wrist.

“That was fun, ” he said.

Griffin scored 18 in the first, when the Clippers had runs of 10-0 and 14-0 in taking a 43-25 lead.

“The first five minutes, the teams were scoring up and down, ” Rivers said. “The ball pressure changed the game. Our defense is catching up. “

The Lakers used a 12-2 spurt to close within one before Griffin and Jordan combined to score 12 of their final 14 points.

The Lakers never got any closer.

“The first nine minutes were OK, ” Gasol said. “The next 39 were long and hard and frustrating, and just difficult to suffer. “

Griffin provided multiple highlights, slamming down an one-handed jam off an alley-oop from Collison. Another of Griffin’s powerful dunks had former Clippers center Chris Kaman ducking out of the way before Jordan sealed the 14-0 run with a steal and monster dunk of his own.

“Blake is doing everything for us, rebounding and defending, ” Rivers said. “He is a great passer. It gets lost in his fancy dunks. “

The Clippers’ reserves played most of the second quarter, extending their lead to 70-52 at the break.

The Lakers missed 18 of 20 shots in the third, when they scored just eight points and101-60 as Bryant looked on from the bench, his head propped in his left hand.

“I don’t think there was one positive thing we could take from this game, ” Marshall said. “We were competitive for maybe five minutes, and we just can’t have that. “

Griffin dominated the third, scoring 13 points. Jordan got a technical after he and Gasol exchanged words nose to nose.

“I was just trying to stop him from running and getting that first couple of steps. That was it. He got upset about it, but I had no other choice, ” Gasol said. “I can’t keep up with him running up the floor like that. I didn’t even stand him up. I just kind of stopped that first burst. “

Griffin then faced up Gasol from 17 feet and hit a jumper with Gasol giving him 4 feet of room to shoot.

Beleaguered Lakers fans shouted, “We want Kobe! ” in the game’s waning minutes.

Game notes

Veteran F Hedo Turkoglu worked out for the Clippers on Thursday. He has been without a team since he was released by Orlando last fall. “We’re not doing anything anytime soon, ” Rivers said… The Lakers fell to 6-13 on the road and 3-11 on the road against West opponents… Injured Lakers G

Report: Gasol-Bynum trade talks hit a standstill

These two may not be switching jerseys. (USATSI)
These two might not be switching jerseys. (USATSI)

ESPN experiences that talks between the Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers for a deal to end Pau Gasol to the Cavs in a trade-and-waive salary clearance move for Andrew Bynum have hit a standstill.

The deal just isn't lifeless however it is not progressing. The Cavs, who've until Jan. 7 to trade Bynum before his contract becomes guaranteed and loses its instant value in a trade, are actually actively searching for other options.

The most important difficulty, sources stated, includes the Lakers' want to get an extra asset from the Cavs beyond Bynum's crew-friendly contract, which could save the Lakers greater than $20 million in salary and luxury taxes. The Lakers are keen on additionally getting a young prospect or first-round draft decide as a part of the deal. The Cavs have been reluctant to half with either.

To satisfy NBA commerce guidelines, the Cavs must add at least one more player to any trade involving Gasol for Bynum. Gasol is within the last yr of a contract that pays him $19.three million. Bynum's contract is for $12.25 million however is just half guaranteed before next week, which is why the Lakers have an interest. By trading for and then waiving Bynum, the Lakers could take themselves beneath the luxurious-tax threshold for the first time in seven years.

by way of Pau Gasol-Andrew Bynum commerce talks between Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers stall – ESPN.

The 2 teams held discussions this week in a move that Ken Berger of describes as harmful both within the brief term and lengthy-term for the Lakers:

Do I believe the Lakers will do that? It would require a fundamental shift in their aggressive and monetary DNA. Not to point out the fact that skipping a season in the tax would not by itself spare them repeater charges in 2015-16 – the second 12 months of Bryant's extension. The repeater charges are in impact for any group that pays the tax in 4 out of 5 seasons beginning with the 2011-12 season – which means if the Lakers actually are scared of the large bad wolf, they would have to take two years off from paying tax over a 5-12 months period. If that were the case, why'd they signal Bryant to a two-yr, $48.5 million extension within the first place?

Additionally, there's this: If the Lakers stand pat, they will have an $11.three million tax invoice this season – a few third of last year's invoice. That's pocket change to the Buss household. And forgetting in regards to the repeater tax for a second, in the event that they trip it out with Gasol, they're going to be free and away from his contract subsequent season. For the difficulty of saving the Lakers a few bucks this season, however, the Cavs undoubtedly would ask a steep value when it comes to LA taking back future cash. In the event that they merely preserve Gasol and hope for the most effective, the Lakers not less than know they'll have no future obligation associated to him – both by way of his personal contract and as far as any wage they'd need to take back in a commerce.

In different phrases, in some ways buying and selling Gasol would solely make the Lakers' problems worse – both in the quick term and the long run.

through Dumping Gasol for Bynum would symbolize seismic shift for Lakers –

There's a whole lot of resistance to this concept across the league both in govt and media circles. In part, that is as a result of many are uncomfortable with the thought of the Lakers having to play by the same cost-cutting rules as the have-nots of the league. That makes quite a lot of columnists uncomfortable.

But this was the aim of the brand new CBA. (Nicely, the public objective. The precise aim was only for the owners to make more cash, and mission accomplished, I'd add.) It was alleged to degree the enjoying field in favor of parity.

In the meantime, the hiccup seems to be based mostly around the fact that usually, the Lakers get the higher finish of such a deal by a large margin. They have a history of lopsided trades that favor them, and seem to plan on trying to get a similar package deal for Gasol. At the same time, the Cavaliers' entrance workplace is infamous for demanding the moon for whatver rocks they're selling. You've got obtained two franchises that notoriously drive aggressively hard bargains. That makes the odds of a deal low, even if each side are attempting to deal assets which have misplaced most of their value. Bynum is a salary dump and Gasol is a shell of himself.

”Any time Dwyane will get on the break I attempt to chase him down,” James mentioned. ”I did not know what he was going to do. The one means I can catch it’s with my left [hand]. I just tried to improvise. I acquired to see it once more.”

Lakers predict ‘dominant’ Kobe in his return

Kobe Bryant To Return Sunday

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Kobe Bryant will make his season debut for the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday against the Toronto Raptors at Staples Center.

It will mark his first game since tearing his left Achilles nearly eight months ago.

Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant will return to the lineup Sunday for the first time since tearing his Achilles in April.

Bryant announced the news by linking to a two-minute video on his Facebook page Friday afternoon. The video showed his No. 24 Lakers uniform floating in the middle of the screen and being battered by the elements – wind, rain, snow, etc.

Eventually the jersey is torn down the middle of the chest, presumably representing the Achilles tear that Bryant suffered, before being repaired with a blinding beam of sunlight.

The video begins with the full-screen title "Seasons of Legend" and ends with "The Legend Continues.. December 8. "

Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni was asked what his reaction would have been if he was told during training camp that Dec. 8 would end up being Bryant's return date.

"I'd probably be saying, 'What took him so long? '" D'Antoni said jokingly before the Lakers' 106-100 win against the Sacramento Kings on Friday night. "No, I think it's terrific. Obviously he feels good about it and we'll see going forward, but this is good news. "

Xavier Henry, one player who benefited from Bryant's absence as he went from training camp invitee to regular contributor, said he didn't bother trying to figure out Bryant's return date.

"I didn't have no guess, but I'm glad it's Sunday, " Henry said. "I'm glad he comes back and we'll see how everything goes. "

D'Antoni said he had yet to watch Bryant's announcement video, and he wasn't the only one on the team in that boat. Nick Young watched it for the first time on a reporter's iPhone in the locker room before the game with Jodie Meeks and Jordan Hill peering over his shoulder at the screen.

"To hear he's coming back, it's definitely a positive influence for everybody, " said Meeks, who Bryant could replace at shooting guard in the starting lineup. "We want to win this game tonight and Sunday will be a tough game, but with him back, we will play with a lot of confidence. "

D'Antoni was confident that the long layoff would not affect Bryant's impact on the game.

"He'll be a dominant player, " D'Antoni said. "He can play any way. He can play below the rim, above the rim, beside the rim. I mean, the guy can play any way. He'll figure out how he'll be effective and then he'll come at you with everything he's got. That's been his M. O., and I think that's what he'll do. "

The coach was asked to reflect on the game in which Bryant went down, tearing his Achilles on April 12 against the Golden State Warriors.

"What do you think I'm thinking? " D'Antoni said. "I mean, 'Holy crap. ' I just hated it. I hated it for him. I hated it for the Lakers. I thought we finally had it going pretty good. Stuff just [did not work out]. We got ourselves in a hole and he had to play unbelievably hard to get us back in the playoffs, he did it and then he goes down. It was a tough thing to take. "

D'Antoni said he never doubted Bryant, 35, would return.

"Modern medicine and the way he is, yeah, I thought he'd come back, " D'Antoni said.

Bryant said Thursday he would "probably" have a reduced amount of playing time when he returns. He averaged 38. 6 minutes per game last season.

"Getting your sea legs, it takes some time to do that, " Bryant said. "That's why we have preseason games and it builds to the regular season. It just takes a while, no matter how much running and conditioning you do, to get out there and play is different. So I'm sure I'll be limited in some capacity. "

D'Antoni would not state an expected minute range for Bryant.

"I'll talk to [Lakers trainer] Gary [Vitti] about that and Gary will talk to Kobe and we'll try to figure it out, " D'Antoni said. "A little bit of it will be he'll just have to go, 'I need a blow, ' and we'll try to figure out the best way [to limit his minutes]. I don't think we know. We'll have a game plan, but he'll adjust to it as he feels what he feels his body can do. "

Nets’ Kidd fined $50K for ‘spill’ vs. Lakers

NBA Fines Jason Kidd $50K For Spill

NBA Fines Jason Kidd $50K For Spill

NEW YORK – Nets coach Jason Kidd has been fined $50,000 for appearing to intentionally drop a cup of soda on the court late in Wednesday night’s loss to the Lakers, the league announced Thursday.

With 8.3 seconds left and his team out of timeouts, Kidd, who was holding a cup of soda, appeared to say “hit me” to point guard Tyshawn Taylor in order to stop the game so the team could draw up a last-second offensive play.

After Lakers guard Jodie Meeks made the first of a pair of free throws, giving his team a 96-94 lead, Taylor walked toward Kidd near the sideline and collided with his coach, who was holding a cup of soda at the time. The cup of soda spilled on to the court. While it was being cleaned up, the coaching staff drew up a last-second play. Taylor was subbed out of the game for forward Mirza Teletovic.

Adding to the chaos of the moment, while Nets assistant John Welch drew up the team’s final play, two Lakers appeared to be in the middle of the huddle.

Meeks then made the second free throw, and on the ensuing Brooklyn possession, small forward Paul Pierce missed a 3-pointer that would’ve tied the game with 2.2 seconds remaining. The Nets ended up losing to the Lakers 99-94 at Barclays Center.

“Cup slipped out of my hand while I was getting Ty,” Kidd said of “Cupgate.” “Sweaty palms. I was never good with the ball.

“In the heat of the battle, you’re trying to get guys in and out of the game, and the cup fell out of my hand.”

Video replays appeared to show Kidd saying “Hit me,” something Taylor flatly denied.

Said Taylor: “No [Kidd didn’t say that]. I wasn’t paying attention. I just kind of bumped him. I didn’t even know he was holding [anything]. [But] coach was drinking a soda on the sideline. I was like, ‘What’s he doing?’

“It could ice a free throw shooter and be a timeout when you don’t have one, but that wasn’t the thought process. I was just coming out, and he was in my way. ‘Coach, get out of my way, bro.’ ”

It isn’t the first time Kidd has done something odd to create a stoppage in play.

Back when he was playing with the Dallas Mavericks, Kidd made contact with Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Woodson as the point guard dribbled up the sideline. Kidd appeared to initiate the contact with Woodson, though he pointed at Woodson as if to show the coach impeded his progress down court.

NBA Game Recap- Lakers Bench Blowout Clippers

Los Angeles Clippers- 103

Los Angeles Lakers- 116

For one night anyway, the “Hallway Rivalry” between the Clippers and Lakers became a laugher when the Lakers bench punished the Clipper starters in the fourth quarter to the tune of 41 points and 76 total points on a night from the reserves as the Lakers rolled to a 116-103 ‘unexpected’ win.

Not many people expected this young Kobe-less Lakers team to show up on opening night and beat a Clippers ball club many picked to contend for a Western Conference championship.

This is not the same Lakers team of 2012-13… this team is younger, quicker, more athletic, and playing with energy. No expectations… just play the game.

It’s not a bad thing to be the underdog sometimes,” said Lakers’ Jodie Meeks. “No expectations. We go out there and play hard. What’s the worst that can happen? We lose, and people say we’re no good?”

Not one Laker starter played in the fourth quarter as coach Mike D’Antoni elected to stay with his bench and they responded to the tune of 41 points scored to the Clippers 24.

Mike (D’Antoni) did a great thing: He didn’t bring his starters back in.” Rivers said. “There was a point where I was thinking: ‘Please bring them back in.”

Xavier Henry led all players with 22-points (12 in the fourth quarter).

We’re a deep team, and people don’t think we’re that good,” Henry said. “That always fuels us. People are saying we’re going to finish 12th or whatever, but we have a great group of guys who go out there and play hard. We’re young, we’re athletic. We go after it.”

All the talk coming in to the game was about the Clippers finally being “the team” in L.A. New coach in Doc Rivers, new faces, new attitude, new identity, high expectations. But, it was the Lakers who were not quite ready to relinquish the title of “L.A.’s Team.”

We were not ready tonight,” said Rivers. “(The Lakers) have heard for probably the last two months how good (the Clippers) were going to be… so you knew that they were going to play like this was the world championship—with that type of energy. And I thought we never matched it. Everything they did was harder than us and more physical than us. They destroyed us on the glass and destroyed us in turnovers. So it was a good lesson for us.”

The Clippers swept the Lakers last season winning all four.

You’ve got to give it to them. They outplayed us,” Griffin said. “They did a good job. They were ready. They turned up the heat in the fourth quarter and didn’t respond.”

Oh, man, it seemed like it happened so fast,” Clippers’ Chris Paul said. “Those guys executed their game plan, and when you’re missing somebody like Kobe, you feed off that energy”

For tonight at least and ‘til next time… the Lakers own the bragging rights.
