The drama wasn't over but in a game that includes tenacious defense and rabid depth by both groups.

SDSU acquired known as for a 10-second violation, and the Wildcats regained the ball. Johnson obtained fouled and made each for a 67-61 lead with 26 seconds to go. Thames obtained fouled on a 3-level try, and he sank all three pictures to depart SDSU trailing 67-64.

The Aztecs had Johnson trapped close to their bench, however he handed out of the double-team and Gabe York bought fouled at the other end. He missed the first and made the second, maintaining Arizona forward 68-64. Thames missed, and Johnson once more went to the road, where he ended the scoring with two free throws.

San Diego State led by eight factors early within the second half after leading by that many simply earlier than halftime. The Aztecs managed the boards 37-29, with three of them often battling without delay on the defensive finish. Josh Davis had 14 rebounds for SDSU.

The Aztecs were making an attempt to reach the final eight for the primary time at school history below sixty nine-year-outdated coach Steve Fisher.

"One in every of as of late, we will get to a Closing 4," Fisher mentioned.

Johnson's 2-of-12 taking pictures wasn't the Wildcats' only drawback. Kaleb Tarczewski returned late within the sport with four fouls, and Hollis-Jefferson fouled out with four:forty two to play.

However Johnson made his first basket a couple of minutes later and carried the Wildcats across the end line after they trailed a lot of the second half.

"It is wonderful for a kid to be able to try this after not making shots for about 25, 30 straight minutes," Miller mentioned.

T.J. McConnell's layup gave Arizona its first lead, 50-49, of the second half after the Wildcats got within one 3 times. SDSU answered with baskets the primary two occasions however couldn't cease McConnell, who finished with 11 factors.

The Wildcats started getting a number of the offensive rebounds that eluded them a lot of the sport, and Tarczewski scored after his teammates grabbed two on the identical possession to keep Arizona ahead 54-51.

Polee's protection helped maintain Johnson scoreless within the first half, when he went zero-for-7 and missed all three of his 3-point makes an attempt. Fox Sports Warren Barton Talks Champions League, Vince McMahon and Why He Thinks Gus Johnson Will Be One of the Best Soccer Announcers in the World

warrenbartonWarren Barton, an Englishman, has been part of the American soccer panorama the previous couple of years working as an analyst for Fox Soccer Channel and now Fox Sports 1. If you happen to’re a fan of the game within the States, you’ll little doubt acknowledge the previous England international and are nicely aware of his tendency to mix it up with former U.S. Nationwide Workforce striker Eric Wynalda on air.

Though FOX misplaced the rights to the Premier League, it nonetheless airs the Champions League and FA Cup. Right now we’re smack dab in the middle of peak soccer with European competitions, the start of MLS this weekend and the World Cup looming less than one hundred days away. Over the weekend FOX aired the quarterfinals of the FA Cup, together with Wigan Athletic shock 2-1 win over Manchester City. The second leg of the Round of sixteen Champions League video games resume on Tuesday with Bayern Munich/Arsenal and Atletico Madrid/AC Milan.

The Large Lead spoke with Barton by cellphone final week on a lot of soccer matters including what makes the FA Cup particular as an Englishman, why English fans are not often real looking about their nationwide group and what it’s like working with Gus Johnson.

TBL: Clearly Americans are wrapped up in English soccer, with the Premier League primarily. The FA Cup … typically it feels like the appeal is misplaced in translation. As an Englishman, describe what makes the FA Cup so particular?

WB: As a British one who thinks of the FA Cup, it’s the romance. We love the opportunity an amateur athlete pitting his wits against the Premier All-Stars. It’s like a high school group taking part in against the Steelers or the Cowboys in the Tremendous Bowl. It begins with a policeman, a builder, they could possibly be doing effectively and playing against mighty Manchester City or Arsenal. There’s the history. It’s the oldest home membership competitors in the world. That’s how I generalize it. The romance, the historical past. The beauty, as I mentioned, an newbie athlete playing towards one of many heroes of the Premier League.

TBL: What matchup would make for the most effective closing for the Champions League this season?

WB: Bayern Munich, they're the benchmark. Actual Madrid, at the moment, with the best participant on this planet (Cristiano Ronaldo), the most costly player on this planet (Gareth Bale) and possibly essentially the most underrated coach in the world, as properly with (Carlo) Ancelotti. Clearly ex-pats wish to see Chelsea or Manchester City. In case you’re a purist, trying on the game, taking a look at (Bayern and Actual) they’re thrilling, they rating objectives and so they play to win. They've the opposite group apprehensive about them, somewhat than being cautious. Take Manchester City, they have been very respectful of Barcelona and when you speak about Bayern or Real Madrid they exit to win regardless of who they’re enjoying against.

TBL: You’ve been in America for some time, what do you make of the viewers who watches English video games or soccer on the whole, who do you think that audience is?

WB: I can go simply by Twitter. They’re very educated. They’re very passionate. They are often very essential as well. Now with the sport being proven on so many channels, the Internet, folks’s knowledge is getting higher and other people’s opinions are getting stronger.

The expansion I’ve seen in six years, you may simply go by our viewing figures. Every year it gets larger. The data is spreading. … What’s thrilling is the game within the U.S. hasn’t even reached it’s potential but and it’s already breaking data week-in, week-out. That’s exciting as an analyst, as an ex-player, as a coach going ahead. I do know that’s how Eric (Wynalda) and Brian (McBride) really feel. We love it.

TBL: What’s probably the most noticeable change in soccer because you’ve been over here in America?

WB: Have a look at the shirts. You’re speaking about each now and again you might see a West Ham shirt or an Everton shirt. Earlier than it was once simply Barcelona or Actual Madrid, Manchester United. Clearly there’s ardour.

It’s also individuals recognizing you. You go to Phoenix, you go to Miami, Los Angeles, folks at all times ask me, ‘What’s Eric like, what’s Brian like?’ That shows you that the audience is getting bigger. Sure people are carrying not solely prime Premiership shirts, but perhaps a Stoke shirt will likely be worn. You’ll obviously see numerous MLS shirts. The game is growing. It’s the identical because the NFL in the UK. I communicate to my mates there. Earlier than you would possibly see a Cowboys and a 49ers shirt. Now you get a Chargers, Tennessee. It’s crossing over.

TBL: I’m positive you saw the rumors final month about Vince McMahon’s interest in shopping for Newcastle United, one among your former clubs. What did you make of that? Would he be a great addition to English soccer?

WB: You can’t assist however have a smile on your face, because of the ties to the WWE and what he’s completed. Something is feasible. That’s the fantastic thing about what’s happening.

Am I towards it? No. Wouldn't it surprise me? Sure.

You have a look at Roman Abramovich, a Russian billionaire coming to Chelsea. You have a look at what the Qataris have done at PSG and obviously these type of golf equipment. They’ve taken these mediocre teams from a decade in the past and turned them into global giants. It’s intriguing. As I said to Rob Stone, it could intrigue me. It will bring humor back into the sport and that’s what it’s about. (McMahon) positively knows business, look what he’s accomplished to that enterprise. He’s additionally obtained a strong opinion which is sweet.

Newcastle Fan

TBL: Newcastle has an enormous, passionate fanbase, an enormous stadium … why has it been so exhausting for them to get over that hump and compete for trophies constantly? What is it about that membership that all the time holds them back?

WB: It’s the turnover of coaches. You take a look at Chelsea and the turnover. To bridge that hole, you must sign high-quality gamers. We completed second twice (Barton played for Newcastle United from 1995-2002), played in Cup finals, played within the Champions League. You have to discover the suitable coach. There are only so many Sir Bobby Robsons which are round. It is advisable to have an owner that understands the chance you’ve given a certain coach. It’s an amalgamation of turnover of coaches, turnover of players and it’s like everybody – there’s solely so many winners. Sadly Newcastle are one of the teams like an Everton, like a Liverpool in the meanwhile who are trying to interrupt into the Prime 4. You possibly can throw Tottenham into that equation as well and so they’ve spent over $100 million. Cash doesn’t all the time purchase success, nevertheless it actually helps.

TBL: What’s it been like working with Gus Johnson, such as you did last spring with the Champions League?

WB: There’s little question. I’ve worked with Martin Tyler, with Rob Hawthorne on Sky and Gus is simply as passionate as them.

We’re in America and I think we should have an American voice. It sounds strange coming from a Brit, however that’s me personally. We've an American audience and to bridge that hole to get the American individuals to understand you want an American voice. Which will get myself out of a job however that’s how I feel. I’ve lived right here and respect the country and respect what the game is. I think Gus Johnson is pretty much as good as anybody on this planet. Yes Martin Tyler is the benchmark however you’ve received Gus Johnson 15-20 years in the sport and he’s right behind him. I’m an enormous fan, not just because he’s with us, however for what he does with the game, how strong he is to place his status on the line, to try this. That takes not solely guts, but it takes confidence to do this and he’s received all our confidence and the network behind him.

TBL: Will you be working more Champions League video games this spring with Gus?

WB: Our boss, obviously, has already spoken to myself and Eric about that on the timescale. It obviously needs to be a recreation that appeals to folks. From that standpoint I feel it will be accomplished. Will probably be a sport that’s worthy like Manchester United/Real Madrid. We don’t need to shortchange the viewers. Gus is very dedicated in addition to everybody on the soccer aspect. [Ed. word: Johnson will possible be again calling Champions League games this spring, but FOX hasn't confirmed recreation or date yet.]

TBL: Getting again to the Champions League, a number of years ago we had three of the 4 semifinalists coming from England. We’re at all times told the EPL is one of the best league on the planet, but now the continental European teams are faring much better against them in the Champions League. Is it cyclical or is there a cause why?

WB: The Premier League is the most exciting league. I feel Tim Howard mentioned that. Brian McBride stated that. You possibly can take a team like Fulham and may go and beat a Manchester United, a Chelsea. If you’re speaking other leagues, Real Madrid normally win their games, it’s impossible they’ll lose. The Premier League is aggressive and thrilling due to the fashion of football. It’s very much a mixture of continental and the British physicality. Now it’s a shift. Whether it’s La Liga, the Bundesliga or Ligue 1, you’re seeing that due to the money. PSG have performed effectively with the players they have. I still just like the EPL is essentially the most thrilling or aggressive.

The Champions League is the most exciting when it comes to the technical high quality of the coaches. If you talk about the information of the sport, there’s where the Champions League for me is so intriguing. The standard of gamers, the quality of coaches. The Premier League nonetheless has to bridge that gap. If you’re talking about data and techniques, it’s the Champions League. For those who’re talking pleasure it’s the Premier League, no doubt because of the bodily side of what you've got. If it’s the throughout bundle it’s Champions League for me.

TBL: As an Englishman what’s a sensible expectation for England on the World Cup this 12 months?

WB: To win it! (laughes) No, if we can get to the quarterfinals that may be an awesome achievement. As you realize in England we all get so excited that we’re going to win it, that that is the year. Once you discuss South America you talk about Brazil, Argentina and in Europe you look at the Germans and the Spanish.

All your wives and girlfriends are getting buggered right now.

TBL: English fans are bizarre with the World Cup. Half of them think it’s their birthright to win it, the opposite half think they have no likelihood. What’s it actually like?

WB: Two weeks earlier than everyone says we’re going to win it. The Queen will likely be on TELEVISION. We’ll have Prince Charles, Prince William, it’ll be our time. As soon as we kickoff, it’ll be, no we’re going to lose and go out of it. There are so many combined emotions. You have all the flags out, we’ll be able to go. Possibly this yr we’re being pessimistic, however real looking. That is the first time I’ve spoken to individuals and they’re like “we ain’t going to win it.” We’ve all the time stated before “we’ve obtained Rooney, we’ve got Peter Crouch, we’ve bought Steven Gerrard.” This time it’s extra like, if we get out of our group we’ve completed effectively. A bit of reality has kicked in.

TBL: I’m not sure how intently you monitor the U.S. crew, but we’re three months away from the World Cup. What do you think the U.S. expectation needs to be?

WB: Final week, when I watched them practice – Jurgen invited us down with Rob Stone – it was a privilege to speak to Landon (Donovan). The European gamers weren’t there. I just thought it’s very unfortunate with the group. Jurgen can flip it around and say to do effectively we’ve received to play in opposition to the best, however I think there’s such robust momentum from what he’s achieved within the last 18 months. The Donovan state of affairs has modified, the place you must earn the suitable to play for the U.S. which is implausible. There’s competition for places. The perfect players have stepped up. (Chris) Wondolowski, Eddie (Johnson) guys like that have stepped up. If they get out of that group I feel they’ve done very effectively. Anybody, even when it was England, even when it was France in that group. Looking at that group is very troublesome.

TBL: You’ve worked with Eric Wynalda for a pair years now. What’s the most heated argument you’ve had collectively?

WB: Obvious: The Premier League and the Bundesliga. He is in awe of the Bundesliga. He loves it. It’s his largest ardour and rightly so.

We argue about three issues: Premier League vs. Bundesliga, the U.S. vs. England … and who’s going to buy lunch. Each time I’ve gained and I’ve bought lunch each single time for the last three and half years with him. He’s a fantastic guy. We have now a lot of enjoyable on TELEVISION. People ask if we get on. I feel yeah we do, but now we have opinions and that’s what it’s all about.

He’s not bought me one beer or one sandwich in 4 years, and you may quote me on that.

Z. Johnson wins Tournament of Champions

KAPALUA, Hawaii – Zach Johnson is taking his place among the large boys in golf with two of the shortest clubs in his bag.

On a Plantation Course at Kapalua that needs to be paradise for the game's longest hitters, Johnson chipped in for his opening birdie after which hit 4 beautiful wedge pictures on the back 9 Monday to rally from two shots behind, close with a 7-under sixty six and win the Event of Champions.

"I simply picked it apart," Johnson mentioned.

AP Photo/Marco GarciaZach Johnson's year acquired off to a good begin with a one-shot victory over Jordan Spieth in the Tournament of Champions.

That was pivotal on the back 9, where five gamers had a chance to win. Johnson ran off 4 birdies in a five-gap stretch, all of them with a wedge in his hand, none of the photographs significantly simple. He wound up with a one-shot win over Jordan Spieth, the perfect solution to begin a brand new yr.

Particularly after he ended the outdated one with a win.

Johnson didn't want any heroics this time, not like last month in California within the World Challenge when he holed a shot from the drop zone – with a wedge – on the final hole and wound up beating Tiger Woods in a playoff. Kapalua was mainly about chipping and putting, and Johnson is among the many finest.

"Getting the ball in the fairway and giving my wedges a chance was essential," he mentioned. "It's about plotting my manner, placing myself in a yardage spot that I do know goes to give me a chance."

Johnson, beginning his eleventh season on the PGA Tour, won for the 11th time in his profession. Since his rookie season in 2004, solely Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh have received more on the PGA Tour. It additionally was Johnson's third win in his last six begins, relationship to the BMW Championship exterior Chicago in September that certified him for this winners-solely tournament in Kapalua.

Spieth had a one-shot lead going into the back nine and thought solely of constructing three birdies. He started approach too late, dropping three good birdie chances in the gentle, middle portion of the again 9 and then ending with two birdies that solely gave him a runner-up end. He closed with a 70.

"I was more than happy with the finish, having the ability to birdie the final two holes and not less than have considerably of an opportunity on 18," said Spieth, who had a 100-foot eagle putt just off the entrance of the green to power a playoff. "But in the end, 14, 15, 16 really kind of hit me onerous in the course of the back 9."

He made par on all of them, twice missing putts from about 6 toes.

That's where Johnson thrived.

He caught Spieth for the lead with a wedge from eighty three yards to about 2 toes for birdie on No. 12. Johnson laid back with a three-wooden on the 14th gap and hit wedge to about 8 feet beneath the outlet for birdie and the outright lead. Maybe probably the most daunting shot came on the par-5 15th, up a steep slope to a green with a false entrance. The grain from the fairway and on the green was in opposition to him.

"For those who simply missed it just a little bit, it's come back at you," he said. "I hit an excellent shot."

He adopted that with a wedge to 5 feet and a tough, downhill putt that broke sharply toward the ocean that he made for his closing birdie.

Webb Simpson, tied with Spieth and defending champion Dustin Johnson to start out the ultimate spherical, by no means caught up and closed with a 70. Simpson tied for third with Kevin Streelman, who had a sixty seven.

Jason Dufner was four strokes back in fifth after a sixty nine.

Dustin Johnson made three bogeys earlier than making his first birdie. He shot seventy three and tied for sixth.

Jordan Spieth

Spieth had a one-shot lead going to the again nine.

Spieth was playing within the last group for the first time and seemed poised as ever. With birdies on both par 5s on the front nine, he had the outright lead and regarded as if he would possibly grow to be the youngest participant with two PGA Tour wins since Ralph Guldahl in 1932. The signature shot was from a bunker in need of the 14th green. He blasted out to 6 feet above the hole for a chance to match birdies with Zach Johnson, in the group ahead.

Besides that he missed it.

After which he had to scramble for par on the 15th when what he thought was a perfect shot rolled down the slope 45 yards away. "Yes!" Spieth mentioned when the ball was in flight. However when he saw it land softly and tumble down the hill, he adopted that with, "You've got to be kidding me."

It took two chips to reach the green, and solely a ten-foot par putt saved him in the sport.

Spieth missed an eight-foot birdie putt on the 16th, and the 2 birdies on the end not less than gave him a superb begin to his new yr. He earned $665,000.

Simpson, who received some encouraging news concerning the new child of caddie Paul Tesori before starting his spherical, additionally discovered the incorrect gear with consecutive bogeys early in the spherical and spent the remainder of the day trying to catch up. He birdied three of his final five holes, but that wasn't sufficient to keep tempo with the leader.

Masters champion Adam Scott got inside one shot of the lead with an eagle on the fifteenth hole, just for his wedge to hit the flag on the sixteenth. He had to settle for par, and he closed with a bogey to complete within the tie for sixth.

Bengals’ Johnson stands by criticism of fans

NFL Nation: Bengals High Browns

CINCINNATI – Sooner or later after sending shock waves all through the Queen Metropolis by telling booing Bengals fans to “go away,” defensive end Michael Johnson stood by his comments Monday and stated he did not remorse making them.

“I used to be asked a query and I attempted to answer it honestly from the center,” Johnson said contained in the Bengals’ locker room. “Anybody who knows me knows that it is genuine. We’re right here to win; we want to win. Simply as bad as it pains people watching the game when we don’t do effectively, it hurts us 10 instances extra.”

JohnsonI was requested a question and I tried to reply it honestly from the guts. Anybody who is aware of me is aware of that it’s genuine. We’re here to win, we want to win. Simply as dangerous because it pains folks watching the game when we don’t do well, it hurts us 10 instances more.

- Michael Johnson, standing by feedback on Bengals fans

Those comments came following ones made by Johnson simply after Sunday’s 41-20 victory at home over the Cleveland Browns that touched a nerve amongst Bengals fans. Some on social media sided with him. Many others did not.

“When you’re not believing and being constructive, leave,” Johnson stated while altering after the win. “We don’t want you. As a result of that’s what we’re about round here – staying focused, staying constructive and holding our energy going. Negativity breeds negativity, and we do not try this around here.”

Particularly, he was referring to a sequence late within the first quarter when seemingly hundreds of fans booed Cincinnati’s offense following a third sequence that resulted in a 3-and-out. As quarterback Andy Dalton and the remainder of the Bengals’ offense jogged off the field to offer approach to the punt unit, the plenty made it recognized that they have been restless and offended. A smattering of boos sounded following the earlier Bengals drive, too, when a Dalton move was intercepted by Browns cornerback Joe Haden, who returned the ball 29 yards for a landing that gave Cleveland an early thirteen-0 lead.

Along with the interceptions and stalled drives, the boos additionally seemingly stemmed from Dalton’s play across the previous three weeks. Since posting a 4-zero report by means of his first four video games in October and incomes AFC offensive participant of the month honors, Dalton has been a much completely different player. He’s gone 1-2, tossed eight interceptions and seen his Complete QBR plummet. He hasn’t had a QBR above 20.zero within the final three video games. Sunday’s three.7 was a profession worst.

For perspective, Dalton had QBRs of ninety two.8 and ninety eight.9 within the two video games before his individual slide.

During Sunday’s game, a gaggle of fans in the higher deck of the east stands unfurled a long banner that learn: “Will the real Andy please step up?”

“It simply goes again to if you’re youngsters,” Johnson said Monday. “All people heard that ‘If you do not have anything good to say, don’t say it at all.’ Being at home, I really like enjoying at dwelling. We’re undefeated here this yr. I really like our fans. They usually do a terrific job of being loud and making it robust on the other workforce.

“However that’s who we wish them to make it tough for: the other workforce.”

Left sort out Andrew Whitworth, an eight-year veteran, has been by way of his share of dropping seasons in Cincinnati and is all too familiar with the occasional Paul Brown Stadium boo birds.

“I do not pay attention to that. In case you play offense like we did in the first three series, you are going to get booed,” Whitworth said. “I’ve been here once we have been zero-8. In order that ain’t crap. That ain’t booing. I can bear in mind seeing No. 9 [Carson Palmer] jerseys getting thrown on the field.. on the back of our sideline. So I’ve been around it. That’s Cincinnati. That is a number of the nature here.”

Be that as it may, Johnson hopes this episode will soon be forgotten.

“We’re just priming them for this playoff run,” Johnson stated, laughing while referring to the 7-4 Bengals’ AFC North lead and 5-zero report at home this season. “I am sure we cannot have that problem any more this 12 months, or for the years to come back.”

Johnson downplays sideline spat with Schaub

McGloin Leads Raiders Past Texans

HOUSTON – Andre Johnson left the field after being pushed away from quarterback Matt Schaub during a sideline spat Sunday, strolling into the Houston Texans’ locker room to chill off.

Following Houston’s 28-23 loss to the Oakland Raiders, the teammates talked about their argument, which stemmed from Schaub’s incompletion in the end zone to Johnson on the final play of the game.

“You can see the frustration on his face, frustration on my face,” Johnson said. “I’m not anxious about that. I feel you all are making a big deal about it.

“We talked about it – it is over with. I imply, me and Matt are nice. I’ve no issues with Matt. We played a lot of soccer together. Me and Matt have a very good relationship.”

Johnson and Schaub have performed loads of football together, however not lately. The Texans started Case Keenum of their past four video games, all losses, benching Schaub after he suffered a foot and ankle damage in opposition to the St. Louis Rams.

Schaub wouldn’t reveal what he and Johnson were arguing about on the sideline.

“It’s simply emotions, emotions of the sport, a fruits of plenty of issues, however stuff we are going to keep between us,” Schaub said. “He is a great man and an incredible competitor, as am I. Just the warmth of the moment, but that’s behind us.”

Schaub entered Sunday’s game late within the third quarter, replacing a wholesome Keenum.

Andre Johnson

Texans receiver Andre Johnson stated everything is okay with him and quarterback Matt Schaub regardless of a sideline spat.

“We had to make quite a lot of modifications from a safety standpoint to handle some of the things they had been doing,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak mentioned. “Making an attempt to create some tempo and do that and it made it very robust on Case, in my view, being a young participant.

“I knew that Matt could get executed some of the issues that I wanted to get performed, real quick, and to give us an opportunity to win the football game. In order that’s why I did it.”

Schaub completed 12 of 25 for a hundred and fifty five yards, no interceptions and no touchdowns. Keenum accomplished 13 of 24 passes for 170 yards, one landing and one interception.

Big Ben, Steelers edge Lions with 2 late TDs

Roethlisberger’s Four TDs Energy Steelers

PITTSBURGH – Backed up and fed up, Ben Roethlisberger provided a vivid reminder to his critics and the Detroit Lions of just how dangerous he and his suddenly surging team remain.

The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback passed for 367 yards and four touchdowns, including two within the closing 5 minutes because the Steelers rallied to beat the Lions 37-27.

The victory capped a contentious week through which Roethlisberger refuted speculation he might seek a trade within the offseason and rumors the franchise would love him to take a extra “cerebral” method to the game.

He responded by calling a lot of the plays against an aggressive however immature defense as Pittsburgh put together its most efficient offensive day in additional than two years.

“It feels awesome to win it the way we did,” Roethlisberger mentioned mounting the thirty first comeback victory of his 10-12 months profession.

Roethlisberger led the Steelers ninety seven yards for the go-ahead touchdown after the Lions botched a fake field-aim try early in the fourth quarter, hitting Will Johnson for a 1-yard landing to place Pittsburgh up 30-27 with four:forty six remaining.

Pittsburgh safety Will Allen picked off Matthew Stafford on Detroit’s next possession and returned it to the Lions 30. Five plays later Roethlisberger lobbed a 20-yard strike to Jerricho Cotchery to increase the cushion to 10 points as the Steelers (4-6) received their second straight to maintain the Lions (6-4) winless in Pittsburgh for fifty eight years and counting.

Antonio Brown caught seven passes for 147 yards and two scores and Pittsburgh’s protection rebounded from a horrific second quarter to carry high-powered Detroit in examine through the second half.

Stafford threw for 362 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, surpassing Bobby Layne’s team file for profession passing yards within the course of. Calvin Johnson hauled in six passes for 179 yards and both scores, however Detroit’s two stars disappeared over the ultimate 30 minutes.

The Steelers limited Stafford to simply three of 16 passing after halftime, while Johnson was shut out.

“We knew they’d make plays and get yards,” Pittsburgh security Ryan Clark said. “We simply wanted to make performs and cease them when it counted and we have been able to try this.”

Nonetheless, the Lions entered the fourth quarter with the lead thanks to a 27-level deluge in the second quarter. Detroit had an opportunity to push the advantage to a touchdown. However fairly than have David Akers attempt a brief subject purpose, the Lions opted to run a faux. Holder Sam Martin, however, fumbled while combating for the necessary 5 yards and the Steelers recovered.

“I received hit by a 350-pound man,” Martin stated. “I don’t assume I had the first down, but regardless, that guy made an amazing play.”

The Lions appeared to take management of the NFC North with a win on the street at Chicago last week but let the momentum vanish during a meek second half in which they appeared rattled by soggy conditions at Heinz Field and their own mind-boggling success during the highest-scoring second quarter in franchise history.

“We simply didn’t execute,” Stafford mentioned. “That’s what it boils down to.”

Detroit’s collapse was exhausting to imagine following a dazzling quarter-hour by which Johnson and Stafford did no matter they needed, at any time when they wanted.

Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor said last week he couldn’t look ahead to the possibility to go “mano-a-mano” with the NFL’s greatest receiver. Like nearly every participant who has lined up throughout the line of scrimmage from Johnson over final three years, the matchup regarded like a mismatch.

A minimum of, for some time.

Detroit spotted the Steelers an early 14-0 lead and just 6:37 to set a franchise report for factors in 1 / 4. Johnson, as he tends to be, was right in the course of it. He began the onslaught with an impossibly simple 79-yard landing, taking a heave from Stafford on the Pittsburgh 40 after which virtually jogging into the top zone to make it 14-10.

Johnson was at it again the next time the Lions had the ball, beating the coverage to the within for a 19-yard score to tie the sport at 17.

Taylor became so annoyed that at one point he was flagged for holding and move interference on Johnson on consecutive plays late in the first half, though the penalties served their purpose. Rather than get a last-second landing to go up by 10 at the break, the Lions were compelled to kick a subject aim and accept a 27-20 lead.

Simply as abruptly as the eruption began, it stopped. Detroit did little in the second half whereas the Steelers stoked – for one more week no less than – whatever flickering hopes they’ve of getting back to500 and perhaps beyond.

“We have to maintain this factor going,” Cotchery stated. “Our margin for error is nonexistent proper now. We feel good about this crew and we’ll preserve grinding.”

Game notes

Stafford now has sixteen,005 career passing yards to blow previous Layne’s membership document of 15,710. Stafford’s first landing move to Johnson was the a hundredth of his profession. He reached the plateau in his 55th career recreation, the fourth-quickest in NFL historical past… Johnson has gone over 1,000 yards in four straight seasons, tying

Herman Moore

‘s membership document… Cotchery has a profession-excessive seven touchdowns.

Johnson to Arizona

Stanley Johnson will immediately be one of the best scorers within the Pac-12. (Adidas)

Of the four prime-six recruits to announce their college choices on Friday, it appeared that Stanley Johnson would be the one with the least quantity of drama.

And it stayed true – as heavy favourite Arizona ended up being the selection for Johnson.

For many of his recruitment, the Wildcats were thought to be the favorite to land Johnson, a 6-foot-6 wing forward from Mater Dei (Calif.). Kentucky made a push within the fall, and USC additionally made a late run as his decision date neared, but Sean Miller and Arizona had the edge in this one for awhile. The Wildcats have had success with players from the Oakland Soldiers AAU program in the past, and former Troopers Brandon Ashley and Aaron Gordon are currently enjoying in Tucson. Oregon and Florida had been also in Johnson’s prime five, however didn’t seem to make enough headway.

Arizona will be getting arguably the best motor in the 2014 class in Johnson. Ranked No. 6 in the 247Sports Composite, Johnson is physical and one of many hardest-working players in the country. Along with his strength and aggressiveness, Johnson is a matchup nightmare for most defenders. He not simply overpowers defenders, as he has greatly improved his ball-handling abilities, as well as his skill to knock down perimeter pictures. When it comes right down to it, though, Johnson is just impossible to keep out of the lane – and he loves contact at the rim.

Johnson is the fourth dedication for Miller within the 2014 class. Los Angeles level guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright (No. fifty six in 247Sports Composite) pledged in February, forward Craig Victor (No. 28) popped in August, and junior college transfer Kadeem Allen committed final month. The Wildcats ranked No. 10 nationally before Johnson’s dedication – and his decision solidifies Arizona as the most effective recruiting class in the Pac-12. The Wildcats have also performed an incredible job with available 5-star forward Justise Winslow, however Duke and Florida are also in the mix.

Jordin Mayes is the lone senior on this year’s Arizona crew, although freshman forward Aaron Gordon is almost assuredly going professional. Brandon Ashley and Kaleb Tarczewski are also NBA prospects, but they could stick around for their junior seasons. Both approach, Miller and Arizona are well-positioned to be a Ultimate Four threat again in 2014-15. Johnson’s dedication cements that thought.

This is the first time since Week 5 of the 2005 season that the Lions have been all alone in first in the NFC North, according to STATS.

We came out with a victory on the road against a really tough team,” Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said. “It was a hard-fought win. Proud of the players, but that’s the only thing that means (anything) today.

I mean first place, you don’t get any prizes for first place there nine games into the season.”

With two touchdown catches on the afternoon, Calvin Johnson set the Detroit franchise touchdown record with 63 for his career.

To be part of history for the Lions, that’s a big deal,” Johnson said.

Chicago’s Jay Cutler returned to action for the first time since suffering a groin injury last month and was hobbled by an ankle injury in the second quarter that seemed to worsen as the game went on.

Cutler suffered the ankle injury on the same leg as his groin injury which caused him to play in a great deal of pain throughout the game.

It held up OK. It’s all the same leg so I think I think that was the problem,” said Cutler, referring to the groin and ankle injuries. “But with the groin, you take the ankle out of the equation and I would have been fine, I think.”

Chicago head coach Marc Trestman finally decided to pull Cutler in favor of Josh McCown before the Bears final drive.

I didn’t want to take him out unless he felt he couldn’t do the job.” Trestman said. “It was, I thought, a very courageous performance throughout. Then at the end I took him out because I knew he would have to run around in the two-minute drill and that’s when we decided to put Josh in the game.”

McCown responded by leading the Bears downfield, throwing an 11-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Marshall with 40 seconds left.

It all came down to a two-point conversion for the Bears to tie the game and possibly send it to overtime. The initial conversion failed but thanks to a roughing penalty, Chicago had another chance to tie.

The Bears went for a rushing attempt with Matt Forte, but the Lions’ Nick Fairley swallowed up Forte in the backfield to preserve the Detroit victory.

I just figured it would be run or a play-action pass,” Fairley said. “I just scouted out the ball real good and was just happy I made the play.”

Matthew Stafford ended the afternoon 18 for 35 for 219 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

Keyshawn Johnson: Sapp was a bully too

Did Warren Sapp bully players in Tampa Bay? Keyshawn Johnson says he did. (USATSI) Did Warren Sapp bully gamers in Tampa Bay? Keyshawn Johnson says he did. (USATSI)

Former NFL large receiver Keyshawn Johnson has been preserving tabs on the situation in Miami involving Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito and he says the situation reminds him of one thing former teammate Warren Sapp used to do.

In a radio interview on Wednesday, Johnson mentioned Sapp used to bully Buccaneers defensive lineman Chidi Ahanotu. All three players have been teammates in Tampa Bay in 2000.

“Chidi Ahanotu played with me in Tampa Bay, and I used to observe Warren Sapp do some similar things to Chidi Ahanotu,” Johnson advised KGMZ-FM in San Francisco, by way of ProFootballTalk. “Now I am saying this on the record, and it may go all over the country after I say this. I used to look at him attempt to bully Chidi Ahanotu, OKAY? Because he felt he was more superior than Chidi. So someday, you realize what Ahanotu did? He bought up and he told him, ‘Get your you-know-what in the midst of the floor proper now. I am uninterested in it.”

Principally, Johnson is saying that Ahanotu ended the bullying by difficult Sapp to a fight.

“At that point, guess what Sapp did? He sat down. And then all people else within the locker room, me, the Derrick Brookses, the Brian Kellys, all of us mentioned, ‘Good for you, man,'” Johnson said. “[Sapp] did not want no part of it. Till you rise up for yourself and do not allow these chumps to try this type of stuff to you, they’ll hold doing it. That is the way bullies are.”

Ahanotu took to Facebook to expound on Johnson’s comments, here’s small sliver of what Ahanotu had to say, you’ll be able to learn the rest of his Facebook post right here.

Richie Incognito tormenting & bullying of his teammate reminds me of what our own beloved Warren Sapp did to his teammates & the staff at Buccaneers. Tyoka Jackson, Super Bowl MVP Dexter Jackson, Marcus Jones & Chidi Ahanotu all confronted Sapp & had bodily altercations of various degrees with Sapp. Just about Nothing was off limits to Sapp’s verbal attacks & belittling of his teammates & front workplace workers.

After listening to about Ahanotu’s accusations, Sapp responded later on Wednesday, “Test the source,” Sapp stated, by way of ESPN.com. “I’ve been within the locker room with Chidi for many years. If you already know the character of the beast, do not be surprised by what it does. He had loads of time to say whatever he wished to say about Sapp up until this point.”

Sapp admitted he ‘tortured’ Ahanotu, but he said he did it for Ahanotu’s personal good.

“I feel I helped him receives a commission. And then when he obtained his 10 sacks, did not come to the offseason conditioning, yeah, I tortured his ass as a result of we needed him here in the offseason,” Sapp said. “If I used to be going to be here day-after-day, why wasn’t he? He obtained his $30 million deal, I received my $36 million deal and we had been out there in the identical dirt. But he still says I am his brother because he knows I was proper to get on his ass about not being right here.”

The bullying allegations against Sapp marked the second time he made headlines on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, Sapp talked about how Incognito as soon as used a racial slur in opposition to him during a sport.
