UConn holds off Iowa State at MSG

THE BIG APPLE – DeAndre Daniels' UConn teammates were going to keep passing him the ball until he cooled off.

By the time that happened, it was too late for Iowa State.

Daniels scored 19 of his 27 points in the second half, and the Huskies hung on for an 81-seventy six victory Friday to reach the East Regional final a year after UConn was barred from the NCAA match.

"DeAndre's a scorer, and once you are feeling that you've that confidence, the following shot's going to go in," said senior Shabazz Napier, who knows a thing or two about scoring himself. "We stored feeding him, and he bought super scorching."

Daniels hit his first six photographs after halftime, the one Husky to make a area aim for over eight half of minutes. His three-pointer gave seventh-seeded UConn a forty nine-32 lead.

The third-seeded Cyclones rallied late, pulling within sixty seven-63 with 2 half minutes remaining. However senior Niels Giffey hit a three in the nook for his first factors because the recreation's opening moments, and when the Huskies (29-8) made their free throws within the remaining minute, the UConn followers packing Madison Sq. Backyard could have a good time.

The Huskies will face fourth-seeded Michigan State on Sunday for a trip to the Final 4.

Dustin Hogue scored a profession-excessive 34 factors for Iowa State (28-8), but Large 12 participant of the year Melvin Ejim was three of 13 for seven points, greater than eleven below his average.

The Cyclones, within the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2000, had been enjoying their second game with out third-leading scorer Georges Niang, who broke his foot of their tournament opener.

They trailed by sixteen with less than 7 half of minutes to go however almost came all the way again behind Hogue's scoring inside.

"That is who these guys are, they're fighters," coach Fred Hoiberg stated.

With UConn clinging to a 70-sixty five lead and fewer than a minute left, Iowa State's Naz Lengthy missed a three-pointer, and the 6-1 Napier pulled down the rebound and was fouled by Hogue. The guard calmly drilled each free throws.

UConn was 20 of twenty-two from the foul line, while Iowa State was 6 of 15.

Napier, the American Athletic Conference player of the 12 months, drained 4 early three-pointers, then made just one more area purpose the remainder of the best way. However the quick start by Napier and backcourt mate Ryan Boatright opened up house for the 6-foot-9 Daniels, an inconsistent junior who can score all over the courtroom when he is on.

Since a stretch in late February and early March when he failed to achieve double figures in 4 straight games, Daniels had averaged 15 in his last six outings before Friday. Then towards Iowa State, he shot 10 of 15 and pulled down 10 rebounds.

"With our seniors on this staff, I simply need them to exit with a bang," Daniels stated.

Ejim and DeAndre Kane, Iowa State's prime scorers, have been a mixed 9 of 31. But Hogue, from nearby Yonkers, discovered plenty of space, shooting 15 for 19.

"To play within the Backyard, it's one thing I dreamed about as a child," he mentioned.

After Napier's tough early 3-pointers – he was falling away on two of them and stepping back to open a sliver of space on a 3rd – Boatright and Daniels took over. The three combined for all however six of the Huskies' factors as they constructed a 36-26 halftime lead.

Second-year coach Kevin Ollie is now 3-zero within the NCAA event after taking over for mentor Jim Calhoun, who gave him a giant hug after this one was over. The final time UConn made it this far, the Huskies won a nationwide title when Napier and Giffey have been freshmen.

The current upperclassmen might have transferred after this system's low scores on the NCAA's tutorial progress measure stored UConn from final yr's Large East and NCAA tournaments.

"We were banned from quite a lot of issues," Ollie stated. "We couldn't come here for the match, but they weren't banned from loving and pushing and encouraging one another, and that is what it's all about. Those darkish times, if you don't surrender at nighttime instances, it can reverse, the wind will begin going in your favor, your path.

"And I think that is what's happened now."

Iowa State’s Niang out for rest of NCAA Tournament

Shortly after No. 3 Iowa State’s 97-seventy three win over No. 14 North Carolina Central on Friday evening, the staff took some terrible news.

Iowa State plays No. 6 North Carolina at 4:15 p.m. on Sunday in San Antonio.

Poll Attacks

I can not work out why people preserve underrating Iowa State, and I don’t know how anyone might put the Cyclones, with that body of labor, twenty fifth on an AP ballot . However any person did. And their prize for doing so is a spot in this week’s Poll Attacks

Let’s get it!

Related Press: There isn’t a greater discrepancy between the AP ballot and my Top 25 (and one) than the discrepancy between where they’re rating Iowa State and the place I am ranking Iowa State, and I genuinely do not perceive how the Cyclones may be 17th within the AP poll until you just disregard actual wins and losses and penalize them due to a low KenPom rating and/or some eye-test you are administering from a couch.

Because the physique of work is very nice.

Iowa State is nineteen-5 with seven prime-50 RPI victories, just one loss outside of the top 25 of the RPI, and 0 losses outdoors of the highest 75 of the RPI. To assist put that resume into context, it’s worthwhile to know that Kansas has 10 top-50 RPI wins, and that Syracuse and Arizona both have eight. And that is the complete checklist of faculties with extra top-50 RPI wins than Iowa State.

That’s it.

Kansas, Syracuse and Arizona.

Those are the only teams with more top-50 wins than Iowa State. And, again, Iowa State’s losses aren’t dangerous. Two are to Kansas (No. 1 in the RPI), one is at Texas (No. 22 within the RPI), another is at Oklahoma (No. 25 within the RPI), and the fifth is at West Virginia (No. sixty nine in the RPI). So what I decided to do Monday afternoon is establish the AP voter who ranked Iowa State lowest and write about essentially the most indefensible things I may find on his poll.

The AP voter who ranked Iowa State lowest is Tom Keegan.

So right here we go..

Tom has the Cyclones ranked twenty fifth – which is 15 spots decrease than the Top 25 (and one), eight spots lower than the Related Press ballot, and 6 spots decrease than the Coaches ballot. This is baffling for all the reasons said above. Nevertheless it’s especially baffling considering Tom has Iowa State ranked behind Ohio State, North Carolina and Arizona State on his poll as a result of the profiles belonging to those three colleges don’t even examine to Iowa State’s profile. None of these schools have higher wins than Iowa State. All of these schools have worse losses than Iowa State.

You bought a moment?

I will break it down for you here:

– IOWA STATE —

Wins towards high 50: 7
Losses outside prime 25: 1
Losses exterior top 100: 0

– OHIO STATE —

Wins towards top 50: three
Losses exterior prime 25: four
Losses outside prime a hundred: 1

– NORTH CAROLINA —

Wins against top 50: 5
Losses outdoors top 25: four
Losses outside high one hundred: three

– ARIZONA STATE —

Wins against high 50: 4
Losses outdoors high 25: 3
Losses outdoors top 100: 1

So, to summarize, Iowa State has..

  • 4 extra top-50 wins than Ohio State, three extra prime-50 wins than Arizona State, and two more high-50 wins than North Carolina.
  • three fewer losses exterior of the top 25 than Ohio State and North Carolina, and two fewer losses exterior of the top 25 than Arizona State.
  • zero losses outdoors of the highest a hundred whereas North Carolina has three, and Arizona State and Ohio State every have one.

    The numbers are plain, right?

What might possibly be the argument against ISU’s body of labor?

And how might anybody fairly have Iowa State behind OSU, UNC and ASU?

Coaches ballot: I’m not going to get too worked-up about Villanova being ranked forward Creighton as a result of I like Villanova and nonetheless have the Wildcats ranked seventh within the Top 25 (and one) due to a physique of work that options wins over Kansas and Iowa, and 0 losses to anyone apart from Syracuse and Creighton (twice). However I’ve Creighton ranked sixth – i.e., one spot forward of Villanova – and the reason being as a result of I merely consider that when two colleges’ resumes are comparable then the one faculty that has pounded the other twice should in all probability be at least a spot higher.

    That’s not crazy, is it?

Creighton and Villanova are shut to one another within the KenPom scores, within the Sagarin scores, and in the RPI, and Creighton truly has two extra high-50 RPI wins than Villanova. Creighton, after all, has three losses outdoors of the top 25 of the RPI, and Villanova has none; that shouldn’t be ignored. However, nonetheless, the our bodies of labor are close sufficient to the place it is sensible to provide the sting on a weekly ballot to a Creighton workforce that is 2-zero against Villanova due to a 28-point road win over the Wildcats and a 21-point house win over the Wildcats.

Just so we’re clear, head-to-head results aren’t that necessary.

Not whenever you’re judging total bodies of labor.

However, again, Creighton’s body of work is comparable enough to Villanova’s to the place it appears to be like a little silly, I feel, to have the Bluejays behind the Wildcats based mostly on what we have seen when these two groups have lined up and, you know, performed basketball and stuff.

(USA Immediately Sports activities Images)

It was solely per week in the past that the SEC was boasting about its file eight teams within the AP High 25 poll.

How shortly issues change.

This week, five of those teams – No. 6 LSU, No. 7 Texas A&M, No. eleven South Carolina, No. 15 Georgia and No. 22 Florida – misplaced.

It was seismic shift for a convention that is broadly considered one of the best in the country anchored by No. 1 Alabama, which has held that ranking since the closing ballot of final season.

Whereas the SEC took the bulk of the punches in Week 8, five teams in the AP Top 10 – No. three Clemson, LSU, A&M, No. 8 Louisville and No. 9 UCLA – misplaced this weekend, which ought to make Sunday’s unveiling of the first BCS standings attention-grabbing. Overall, 9 teams within the AP Top 25 went down.

Is that this parity in college soccer?

One may argue there’s extra parity within the SEC than ever earlier than. When a team like Missouri – a crew that won just two SEC video games a year ago – is the category of the SEC East and Tennessee is among the toughest places within the convention to play, there’s one thing amiss. Georgia has lost two straight, Florida is crushed up, LSU’s loss to Ole Miss pretty much eliminates the Tigers from SEC title game competition.

The traditional energy brokers of the conference are those enjoying catchup.

If there’s a brightside to all this, it makes football in the SEC that rather more fascinating and it makes being within the AP Prime 25 that rather more perilous.

And for that week-to-week drama, we’re all winners.

Here’s a have a look at the rest of the Winners and Losers from Week 8:

WINNERS

Jordan Lynch: In some excessive-high quality #MACtion, Northern Illinois’ Jordan Lynch ran wild in a file-setting performance, racking up 316 speeding yards against Central Michigan, an FBS single-game document for a quarterback. Lynch surpassed the mark set by fellow Husky Stacey Robinson, who ran for 308 yards in 1990 against Fresno State. Lynch set the file on 32 carries whereas scoring four combined touchdowns (three rushing, one passing) on the afternoon. The Huskies beat the Chippewas 38-17 to enhance to 7-0 on the season.

Jeremy Gallon: Michigan’s Jeremy Gallon made Indiana’s secondary appear to be Pee Wee gamers in Michigan’s 63-47 win at The Big Home. The senior wideout set a Large Ten report with 369 yards receiving on 14 catches for the Wolverines. Gallon had two totally different receptions of 70 yards and likewise caught touchdowns of 21 and 50 yards. The Wolverines set a school record with 751 yards of complete offense.

Davis Webb: Texas Tech is 7-zero and an enormous part of that has been the play of Davis Webb during the last two games instead of Baker Mayfield, who left Tech’s recreation towards Kansas because of a knee injury.

Webb threw for 415 yards last week towards Iowa State and topped that towards West Virginia Saturday with 422 yards in Tech’s 37-27 win. he’s the primary Tech freshman to throw for over four hundred yards in his first two starts though we should admit that despite Tech’s air raid it couldn’t have been that common of an occurrence.

The toughest teams on Tech’s schedule are nonetheless to return, and that starts next Saturday at Oklahoma. However after the way in which Tech and Webb seemed poised on the street in a possible lure game and the Sooners’ first half shakiness in opposition to Kansas, that won’t be a lopsided game.

Temple: A house team hadn’t won a recreation at Lincoln Financial Subject in 378 days. Till Saturday. Temple beat Military, 33-14 in what was additionally the primary win for first-year head coach Matt Rhule.

Freshman quarterback P.J. Walker made his second profession begin and efficiently completed 10-of-sixteen attempts for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Army running again Terry Baggett, who had 304 yards rushing final week, had seven carries for twenty-four yards Saturday as Rhule received a Gatorade bath.

(USA At the moment Sports Pictures)

Taysom Hill: The BYU quarterback’s assertion recreation to date had been when he gashed Texas for 259 yards on the bottom. On Saturday, he turned the season’s first quarterback to throw for over four hundred yards and run for over 100 in BYU’s 47-46 win towards Houston.

Hill was 29-forty four through the air for 421 yards and ran 33 times for 143 yards and tossed the game successful touchdown to Skyler Ridley with 1:25 left within the fourth quarter, his fourth TD of the sport? The only blemish? Three interceptions.

BONUS WINNER

After Auburn upset Texas A&M in College Station, Auburn fans took to Toomer’s Nook and rolled the lines that had been put up rather than the bushes this season. The end result continues to be pretty awesome.

LOSERS

Iowa State: Remember that one time when Iowa State practically upset Texas? Boy, those were the times as a result of ever since then the Cyclones have been on a downward spiral, which hit rock bottom with a 71-7 trouncing by Baylor. Now, scoring 70-plus factors on an opponent is nothing new for the bears, but to do it to a member of their conference is inexplicable. It’s probably the most point the Cyclones have allowed since Utah scored sixty eight in 2010 and probably the most factors allowed to a convention opponent since shedding seventy seven-14 to Nebraska in November of 1997. Oddly, the only win for the 1-eleven Cyclones that season was against Baylor.

Indiana’s defense: Is that this the worst protection in the BCS? Serious question, as a result of Saturday’s 63-forty seven loss to Michigan was the fourth time that Indiana has given up over 40 factors this season. And we’ll emphasize the purpose once more, this was to Michigan, a group that vomited throughout itself at Penn State in overtime last week and virtually misplaced to UConn and Akron.

Since 2008, Indiana’s defenses have ranked 108th 88th, 90th, 109th and 106th. Coming into Saturday’s sport they were 106th, a rating that’ll go doubtless go downwards.

The Hoosiers are three-four and with games against Wisconsin, Ohio State, Illinois and Minnesota remaining, a bowl recreation looks as if a distant chance.

This Huge 12 Official: This play was initially dominated a touchdown.

What was that official within the foreground thinking? It was reversed and Texas Tech scored a play later, but how does a name like that get missed so blatantly?

(USA In the present day Sports activities Photographs)

Maryland: The harm bug that hit Maryland’s quarterbacks final 12 months bought its extensive receivers in an embarrassing 34-10 loss at Wake Forest Saturday.

Stefon Diggs and Deon Long, the Terrapins top two receivers, each suffered broken legs. Diggs broke his tibia and fibula whereas Long fractured his fibula. Diggs and Long have mixed for 66 catches and over 1,000 yards and beginning quarterback C.J. Brown missed the Wake Forest game after an injury suffered in opposition to Florida State.

What was as soon as a promising season after a shutout of West Virginia and a prime 25 rating is rapidly sliding out of control for the Terps.

Winners and Losers: Clemson misses its year bad loss – for the moment

clemson

If Clemson needs any part of the the conversation for the BCS nationwide championship, it higher hope that Saturday was its 2013 model of Clemsoning.

The Tigers struggled mightily at house towards Boston Faculty for the primary three quarters earlier than finally pulling away to win 24-14 every week before its showdown with Florida State.

If Clemson was looking ahead to the game towards the Seminoles, it is not terribly surprising. The matchup just determines control of the ACC, retains the winner in the nationwide title picture and should determine the Heisman fates of quarterbacks Tajh Boyd and Jameis Winston. So, no strain or something.

But man, did Clemson sweat. Clemsoning, a phrase we talked about after its Week 1 win against Georgia, is when a team underperforms and loses in opposition to a weaker opponent, something that the Tigers have gotten superb at. Hence the identify.

Boston Faculty match that bill as a team getting into Clemson merely seeking to be bowl eligible. But huge performs – a 38-yard landing run by Myles Willis and a sixty nine-yard landing pass from Chase Rettig to Alex Amidon – had the Eagles in front, and the opportunity of a monstrous letdown upset alive.

That was dashed with a Rettig fumble. After Boyd ran in from 6 yards out to give Clemson the lead, Vic Beasley scampered into the end zone after recovering that fumble. Game over. Menace of a massive Clemsoning over. And the matchup between two undefeated high-six teams is undamaged.

WINNERS

(USA At this time Sports activities Pictures)

Texas Tech: If Missouri is the nation’s most shocking 6-0 staff, Texas Tech is correct behind it. The Red Raiders are legitimate contenders for second within the Massive 12 behind Baylor although Iowa State put up a struggle in Lubbock, shedding forty two-35. Whereas the ultimate score was close, Tech by no means lost the lead and Davis Webb, beginning for Baker Mayfield, who was hurt against Kansas, was a 35-of-forty six for 418 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. In case you were wondering, Tech plays Baylor in Dallas on Nov. 16.

South Florida: Welcome to the highest of the American Athletic Convention, Bulls. Yes, this is the same workforce that lost to McNeese State by 32, but after beating UConn thirteen-10 on Saturday, USF is tied with Louisville and Houston at 2-zero within the AAC. And Friday night time South Florida will get its probability at Louisville. The two-four Bulls shall be a heavy underdog, however hey, anything’s doable, proper?

Shirtless PJ Fleck: Western Michigan misplaced Saturday at dwelling 33-0 to Buffalo, however the Broncos coach took his shirt off and gave it to a scholar at a pep rally Friday night time earlier than the sport. The gesture is why Fleck is a winner, but in addition because of the arms and abs. You do not often see a coach that appears like he works out with his players. Have to be all of the rowing.

UMass: UMass notched its first win of the season with a 17-10 conquer Miami (Ohio) in the battle of winless Mid-American Conference groups. The win gave the Minutemen their second win as a member of the FBS in its second season. They defeated Akron 22-14 last November. Unfortunately, as you’ll be aware within the losers part of this post, nobody was there to see the win.

Tulane: Cairo Santos, the 2012 Lou Groza Award winner, kicked a 42-yard game-winning field goal in extra time – considered one of his 5 on the day – to present the Tulane a 36-33 win over East Carolina. It additionally gave the Inexperienced Wave 5 wins for the primary time since 2004. Since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Tulane soccer program has had a tough time getting back on monitor. However now it is one win away from its first bowl-eligible season since 2002. That yr, the Green Wave went 8-5 and received the Hawaii Bowl.

BONUS WINNER

Doesn’t this picture completely encapsulate Nebraska’s forty four-7 throttling of Purdue? We have got Husker receiver Quincy Enunwa flying into the tip zone while Leroy Clark can solely watch along with his helmet flying off. Heck, it in all probability perfectly encapsulates the Boilermakers’s season. Purdue is 1-5 and has misplaced its last three games by a mixed ninety nine factors.

(USA As we speak Sports activities Pictures)

LOSERS

Arkansas: When the opposing coach has to specific condolences about how badly he beat you, you recognize it was a troublesome day. A 30 yards passing type of powerful day. Whereas Arkansas broke off a couple of massive runs in opposition to South Carolina in its fifty four-7 loss, quarterback Brandon Allen was just four-12 via the air for those 30 yards. After 4 straight losses, it does not get any easier for the Hogs subsequent week. They will Tuscaloosa to go to Alabama.

Bo Wallace: We’ve been here before, Bo. Before being shut out against Alabama, the Mississippi QB lobbed some trash talk within the direction of the Tide’s defensive backs and bragged his receivers had been higher than Texas A&M’s. Effectively, Ole Miss bought shut out by Alabama. After which lost to Auburn. And misplaced to A&M Saturday night time after a discipline purpose as time expired.

Wallace and Ole Miss hung with Johnny Manziel and the Aggies all night time, but after getting the ball back with three minutes to go went three and out. That set up A&M for that winning subject aim and a 3rd straight division loss for the Rebels.

Michigan: It won’t be fair to call Michigan the worst undefeated crew coming into Saturday’s game against Penn State, but they had been certainly the luckiest. Week after week the Wolverines had some well timed performs go their method, but all of that lastly caught up to them during a 43-40 4 OT loss to the Nittany Lions. Michigan kicker Brendan Gibbons missed a 52-yard area aim to win on the end of regulation after which two in extra time to assist with the loss. Many thought the Wolverines might put up a struggle for the Huge Ten title, but their schedule only gets tougher from here on out.

Crowds: We understand that the primary kickoffs of the day don’t depart a ton of time for tailgating and transportation except you get began actually early. However come on TCU.

And are available on, UMass. You won at the moment!

Pac-12 officiating: Pac-12 officiating crews have had a tough 2013. They have been reprimanded following the Wisconsin-Arizona State recreation and were questioned following last week’s Stanford-Washington end. And this week, throughout the Oregon-Washington sport, one official had no idea who on whom the penalty was referred to as. The pause drew boos from the crowd while the official consulted with one other official earlier than a different official yelled the quantity. It was, as soon as once more, not a very good look for Pac-12 officiating.

Kliff Kingsbury takes out ad in Texas Tech paper thanking students

(USA Right now Sports Pictures)

Ryan Gosling’s lookalike has already gained the hearts of many a Texas Tech student, however his newest transfer has likely deepened that affection.

Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury took out an advert in Thursday’s version of the Dailty Toreador, Texas Tech’s student newspaper, to thank the student section for its ardour this season.

It is a pre-emptive, again patting move, so Kingsbury gets props for the subtle strike on this one. Despite keeping it close against Texas last week, Iowa State is one of the Large 12’s weaker packages, so the potential of student complacency exists. And the final time that Iowa State was in Lubbock in 2011, it demolished the then-Tommy Tuberville led Purple Raiders 41-7.

Also, do not you’re keen on how Kingsbury’s advert has a really GQ photo of himself in it? In fact, it will not be doable for Kingsbury to take a not-GQ photograph.

Late McCoy TD pushes Horns past Cyclones

Texas Survives In opposition to Iowa State

VIDEO PLAYLIST video

AMES, Iowa – It did not matter how Texas beat Iowa State.

The Longhorns simply wanted to flee Ames with a win.

They survived – in a means the seething Cyclones might never forget.

Case McCoy scored on a 1-yard plunge with 51 seconds left and Texas rallied to beat Iowa State 31-30 on Thursday night time.

McCoy threw for 244 yards for the Longhorns, (3-2, 2-zero), who will head into subsequent week’s sport against Oklahoma with a minimum of a share of first place within the Big 12.

“I am actually excited. I feel I really like comeback wins on the highway more than something in football,” Texas coach Mack Brown stated. “I just assume I love them. It just says one thing about your toughness and your team and believing. We’re getting again one thing we lost. We couldn’t have completed this the final couple of years.”

The Cyclones may argue that they could not have executed it Thursday night time either without some big breaks.

McCoy led Texas on a seventy five-yard drive in slightly below 3 minutes – which was aided by two pass-interference penalties and two near fumbles by Johnathan Gray.

The first one was reviewed after Iowa State’s Jeremiah George picked up a free ball and began working the opposite approach. Nevertheless it remained Texas ball, a lot to the dismay of irate Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads.

Gray recovered his personal fumble on the subsequent play, and McCoy adopted with the winning touchdown.

“To make a play on the 1-yard line with our backs towards the wall…and (to) have it taken away from them, that’s hard to express. You do not just put an arm round a man and tell him it is OKAY when that happens to him,” said Rhoads, his voice raising with every sentence. “I’ve acquired pretty good eyesight. The view I had of that big display screen in the north end zone confirmed a guy that was not down and our man with the football.”

Sam Richardson had 262 yards passing and Aaron Wimberly had 117 yards dashing and a touchdown for Iowa State (1-three, zero-1). The Cyclones dropped their eleventh straight Huge 12 opener – however none as heartbreaking as this one.

“So happy with the trouble my children gave to win this soccer recreation,” Rhoads said.

The chaotic ultimate minutes capped a recreation through which momentum stored swinging back and forth.

Iowa State’s energy was seemingly squashed when McCoy discovered John Harris for a forty four-yard touchdown strike to end the primary half.

The Cyclones revitalized a close to-sellout crowd with the longest cross play at school history.

Richardson discovered Quenton Bundrage on a easy slant, and Bundrage beat the Texas secondary for a 97-yard rating that gave Iowa State a 20-17 lead. Texas answered on a 6-yard TD run by Joe Bergeron – which was arrange by a pair of pass-interference calls that Iowa State fans also weren’t too blissful about.

Mike Davis then lunged at the knees of Iowa State’s Deon Broomfield, drawing a private foul that might end up being way more than that when the Large 12 critiques the tape.

“We’re the least penalized staff within the league coming into this recreation. There sure appeared to be numerous hankies out there,” Rhoads stated. “I’m positive they made large calls all night time long.”

Wimberly gave the lead again to the Cyclones after a fumble with 11:32 left. Cole Netten’s 29-yard field aim made it 30-24 with 3:forty to go.

It wasn’t sufficient although, as the Longhorns embarked on the winning drive that may find yourself saving their season.

“I thought after we forced the sector objective.. and we had three timeouts in our pockets we’d win the sport. That is who we have been in in our past. I am actually pleased with our guys,” Brown said.

Jackson Jeffcoat’s interception with eight seconds left sealed the win for Texas. Gray had 89 yards dashing, together with a 45-yard landing dash, for the Longhorns – who’ve bounced back from ugly losses to BYU and Mississippi with two straight wins.

McCoy began for the second time this season rather than the injured David Ash, who was out with concussion-like signs, and helped put Texas take a 10-zero lead before Iowa State rallied for thirteen straight points.

McCoy received the Longhorns the lead back with a desperation heave. He flung the ball almost blindly into the end zone – and found Harris between three defenders to put the Longhorns up 17-thirteen.

McCoy was removed from excellent. But on a night when the Longhorns and Mack Brown desperately needed a victory, McCoy did simply enough to assist in giving them one.

Even if Iowa State likely didn’t see it that means.

“I think adversity has already struck this workforce loads of occasions and we preserve discovering methods to maintain battling and staying together and sticking together,” McCoy said.

Iowa St. coach rips officials for calls vs. UT

Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads blasted Massive 12 officiating Thursday evening after a Texas fumble on the objective line ended up being dominated down by contact.

[+] EnlargePaul Rhoads Reese Strickland/USA IN THE PRESENT DAY SportsIowa State coach Paul Rhoads screams at an official after an apparent fumble by Texas on the goal line was negated as a result of the runner was dominated down by contact. Texas scored two performs later and gained 31-30.

Rhoads launched right into a loud postgame rant about the recreation’s ultimate moments, his voice rising to a yell as he defined his displeasure with the ruling that led to a 31-30 victory for Texas.

“I’ve got the privilege as the pinnacle coach of this football program to face my players, win or lose, and look them in the eye and [tell them] how proud I am of the work they put forth, the trouble they gave,” Rhoads mentioned. “And to make a play on the 1-yard line, with their backs against the wall – clear to all people – and have it taken away from them … that’s onerous to specific.

“You don’t simply put an arm around a guy and inform him it’s OKAY when that occurs to him. I’m so pleased with the trouble my youngsters gave to win this football game tonight.”

On first-and-objective from the three, Texas’ Johnathan Grey rushed up the center and was met by a number of Iowa State defenders. Whereas Grey continued to push his approach closer to the end zone, ISU linebacker Jeremiah George swiped the ball out of Grey’s arms and ran down the field.

The play was dominated down by contact after a 1-yard gain. After evaluate, officials determined the ruling on the sector “stands as known as” because video evidence wasn’t indeniable.

I’ve bought fairly good eyesight. The view I had of that gigantic display screen in the north finish zone showed a player that was not down and our guy with the football.

- Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads

“The conference workplace critiques all issues,” Rhoads mentioned Thursday. “I’m positive they’ll assessment this, and I’m positive they’ll come forward with what they really feel the play should’ve been known as.

“I’ve obtained pretty good eyesight. The view I had of that gigantic display screen within the north end zone confirmed a player that was not down and our guy with the football.”

On Friday, Large 12 supervisor of soccer officers Walt Anderson released a statement defending the judgment made by the game officials.

Anderson said the replay official had reviewed 5 digicam angles and accurately decided that video proof could not affirm that Gray misplaced the ball earlier than being ruled down.

“There isn’t a query the runner finally ends up on the bottom, and there’s no query that ultimately an Iowa State participant finally ends up with the ball,” Anderson said. “Nonetheless, after reviewing the video evidence it’s unimaginable to tell with certainty when the runner loses management of the ball and at that point was he down or not.”

On second-and-goal, Texas ran Gray up the center again. He leaped towards the tip zone and tried to increase the ball previous the purpose line with two hands. Replays present ISU defensive again Jacques Washington knocked the ball out of Grey’s arms earlier than it crossed the goal line. Grey appeared to grab the fumble and try to again extend the ball for the rating.

That play was not reviewed, and Texas scored on a 1-yard dive from quarterback Case McCoy on third down to take the 31-30 lead.

Rhoads was also sad that Iowa State was penalized 10 instances for 118 yards on the night time, while Texas dedicated six penalties for 62 yards.

“We have been the least-penalized staff in the league coming into this game,” he stated. “There certain seemed to be lots of hankies on the field tonight. I am sure they made large calls all night lengthy with reference to that.”

For Texas, the purpose-line name was reminiscent of last 12 months’s game in opposition to Oklahoma State, when replay appeared to point out Horns working back Joe Bergeron fumbling on a game-profitable goal-line landing.

Campbell asks Texas to get rid of Mack Brown

Earl Campbell used the power in his legs to turn out to be one of the most prolific working backs within the school game and the NFL in the seventies and ’80s.

The energy of Campbell’s voice at the University of Texas could be the final shoe to drop for Mack Brown in 2013.

Campbell, talking Sunday to KRIV-TV in Houston, said the time has come for Brown to step down as coach or be compelled out at Texas.

CampbellNo person likes to get fired or leave a job, however things happen. I’d go on record and say yes, I believe it’s time.

- Earl Campbell on Mack Brown

“No person likes to get fired or go away a job, but issues happen,” Campbell said, according to the Fox affiliate. “I would go on file and say sure, I think it’s time.”

Brown has lengthy been a supporter of Campbell, who stays involved in the Texas program, still works out in its athletic services and meets with prospects during recruiting occasions.

“Earl has finished so much for Texas,” Brown said Monday at his recurrently scheduled information conference in Austin. “He’ll always be welcomed at our school. I’m upset in his comments, but he’s entitled to his opinion.”

Earlier than a 31-21 win over visiting Kansas State to open Massive 12 play on Saturday, Texas (2-2) had misplaced two video games in a row after posting three subpar seasons, putting Brown on the hot seat in some of the coveted teaching jobs in the nation.

But Campbell thinks it is too little, too late for Brown to save his job.

“I’d simply say this, I take my hat off for USC for what they’ve achieved,” Campbell said of one of many different top jobs, left briefly vacant Sunday after the Trojans fired Lane Kiffin. “They did not mess around with it. They simply said, ‘Let’s do it now.’ I believe in some unspecified time in the future our college’s persons are going to have make a decision.”

Former Texas quarterback Chris Simms also stepped forward Friday and stated on a Fox TV present that he would not assume Brown will return in 2014 and that Texas doesn’t have the talent needed to avoid wasting this season.

Brown, who’s below contract till 2020 and will be paid $5.4 million this 12 months, took Texas to the 2005 nationwide title. The Longhorns advanced to the championship sport after the 2009 season however lost to Alabama.

Brown has been adamant that he wouldn’t step down any time soon.

Texas subsequent plays at Iowa State on Thursday (7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN).

The Longhorns are 24-18 since that loss to the Crimson Tide, and Brown, sixty two, was under fire from followers upset a couple of 1-2 start this year after consecutive lopsided losses to BYU and Mississippi.

“Some individuals get too old,” mentioned Campbell, the 1977 Heisman Trophy winner with the Longhorns and NFL Corridor of Famer after an eight-12 months career with the Houston Oilers and, briefly, the New Orleans Saints. “If players get too outdated to play a game, why can’t a coach get too old to coach it?”

Campbell even recommended Brown’s replacement.

“If we’ll make a change, I want to say that we obtained one in the house, Jerry Grey, who’s getting within the College Soccer Hall of Fame,” Campbell mentioned of the former two-time All America defensive back at Texas, now the defensive coordinator of the Tennessee Titans. “I think that will be a very good place to begin.”

Campbell mentioned the choice to name for Brown’s ouster didn’t come easily.

“Very onerous because Coach Brown is an excellent man,” Campbell mentioned. “I just hope he does not keep… He is accomplished some nice things. The program, he introduced it again, and we don’t want it to get run down where anyone has to begin all over again.”

Winners and Losers: College football’s worst weekend lives up to its billing

(USA Immediately Sports activities Pictures)

We have been promised a horrible weekend of football and we weren’t disenchanted.

Yes, there have been good video games here and there, however unless you take pleasure in watching patsies get 70 factors dropped on them, this weekend was just about a bust.

But there may be good news – LSU coach Le Miles gave us this gem for the weekend:

And the weekend is over.

The weekends of terrible non-convention video games are a thing of the previous and we are able to now move forward with conference play.

If there’s one factor we can take from this weekend, it’s that offense reigns supreme. 4 groups – Ohio State, Louisville, Baylor and Miami – scored greater than 70 factors. Seventeen groups scored greater than 50 points and 30 groups scored more than 40 factors.

The increase of offense is a big win for followers who love to watch dazzling scoring performs and superb runs and catches, but a big loss for defensive coordinators, who are doing all they’ll simply to maintain up.

Here are the remainder of the winners and losers from the weekend:

WINNERS

Kansas: It’s been more than two years since Kansas may brag a couple of win over an FBS crew – until Saturday. Matt Wyman’s 52-yard discipline objective as time expired gave the Jayhawks a 13-10 win over Louisiana Tech and snapped a 22-recreation losing streak to groups from the FBS. On the flipside, nevertheless, Kansas followers belong in our “Losers” section for speeding the sector for a win in opposition to a 1-3 Louisiana Tech workforce. Hey, keep in mind when Kansas was within the Orange Bowl in 2008?

Baylor: Is this our favourite in the Massive 12? Don’t giggle, but the Baylor offense may be the most effective in the state of Texas and has a case for finest in the country. The Bears put up 70 factors on Louisiana-Monroe Saturday, and that was after a scoreless last 22 minutes. Working back Lache Seastrunk is averaging eleven yards per carry on the season, and Bryce Petty has tossed eight touchdowns.

Yeah, Baylor hasn’t played anybody but. However they’ve scored sixty nine, 70 and 70 this season. That is an unmatched offensive resume, especially when you think about the effectivity.

Texas: Mack Brown’s said crew purpose of winning the Big 12 is still on monitor. Is it enough to stop the printing of hundreds extra Saban 2014 shirts?

Texas controlled Kansas State for a 31-21 win Saturday evening to move to 2-2 on the season. The sport was slightly too close for many UT fans late — Kansas State had the ball inside the Texas 10 with two minutes left — but a Jake Waters fumble after he ran right into a teammate sealed the deal for the Longhorns.

It wasn’t a pretty win, and while Baylor is piling up the points, this is nonetheless a flawed Large 12. Texas nonetheless stacks up fourth at finest if you’re ranking the conference at this time, however the first win in opposition to Kansas State since 2003 goes a great distance.

Steven Nelson: With Oregon State trailing by two with 2:30 to go within the fourth quarter and San Diego State with the ball, Nelson’s role as cornerback would primarily be in run assist, right? Nope. On second down, San Diego State drew up a go play and Quinn Kaehler wildly overthrew his receiver on a fast cease route.

Nelson was there behind him, snatched the ball out of the air and waltzed into the tip zone for a 34-30 Oregon State lead that may in the end be the ultimate score. The Beavers trailed a lot of the game, but got here back with 20 fourth-quarter factors to win their third straight after dropping the primary week of the season in opposition to Jap Washington.

Jeremy Hill: The LSU working back ran for 2 first-quarter touchdowns and 184 yards in his second start of the season against Auburn on Saturday night. After being suspended for a bar incident for the primary recreation of the yr against TCU, Hill has made essentially the most of his return to the sphere. He’s totaled 351 yards on just 42 carries and has six touchdowns. With Hill bursting by way of the line and the improved play of Zach Mettenberger, LSU’s offense may be much better than we thought it might be.

BONUS WINNER

(USA Today Sports activities Pictures)

This photograph was top-of-the-line of the weekend as it confirmed the sport-dropping drop by Marshall receiver Davonte Allen throughout a 3 extra time loss to Virginia Tech.

LOSERS

West Virginia: Things aren’t good in Morgantown. The Mountaineers have been shut out 37-0 against Maryland on Saturday, the first time that coach Dana Holgorsen has been shut out on the D1 degree either as an assistant or a head coach. Holgo has gone by way of three quarterbacks this season, Paul Millard, Clint Trickett and Ford Childress, and none have been effective. Childress received the call on Saturday and was a measly eleven-22 for sixty eight yards and two interceptions. In a large open Large 12, West Virginia appears to be like like it’s going to be at the bottom with Kansas and Iowa State.

Georgia ball boy: Things move quick in the Georgia offense, particularly when the Bulldogs are going through a potential upset by North Texas. That’s why even the ball boys must hold their heads on a swivel. Luckily for this guy, he appeared rattled, however unscathed.

Miami (Ohio): It’s a must to reap the benefits of the occasions when your protection is pitching a shutout. The RedHawks didn’t do this. Miami held Cincinnati scoreless for fifty five minutes, but once the Bearcats acquired into the top zone, it was throughout.

Why? Miami totaled a single web yard in the second half. One. It was a putrid offensive outing, failing to convert a single third down and ended up leading to 12 web yards speeding after 5 sacks on 28 carries. That’s 0.4 yards per carry. Cincinnati ought to almost be embarrassed the ultimate score was just 14-0.

Braxton Miller: Ohio State’s star quarterback sat on the sideline – once more – while backup Kenny Guiton took benefit of his alternative to begin and shined. Guiton threw an Ohio State document six touchdowns – by halftime. Miller has been on the bench nursing a strained MCL since Week 2 and in that time Guiton has been enjoying higher and higher and gaining quite a lot of momentum to be the starter.

While coach Urban Meyer stated Miller — a Heisman Trophy candidate coming into the season — wouldn’t lose his beginning spot to damage, it’s a must to surprise how much leash he’ll get before Meyer turns again to Guiton.

Michigan State playcalling: Coach Mark Dantonio took the credit score for a botched trick play late within the third quarter that ultimately led to Notre Dame scoring the sport-winning touchdown early within the fourth quarter. With the offense rolling, Dantonio determined to put receiver R.J. Shelton in as a wildcat. Shelton threw the ball into double coverage and safety Matthias Farley picked him off.

“I felt like we would have liked a giant play,” Dantonio mentioned.

It was a giant play all proper. An enormous play that led to a 17-thirteen Notre Dame win.

Iowa football robbery may have been an inside job

(Getty Images)

Iowa and Iowa State officials are still attempting to figure out who robbed the Iowa locker room during Saturday’s rivalry game at Jack Trice Stadium on the Iowa State campus.

Nine Iowa players and coaches reported lacking items following the 27-21 Iowa win and Monday evening, the Des Moines Register reported police suppose the robbery may have been by somebody with credentialed entry because there was no forced entry into the locker room.

Contemporary Companies Corporation oversees security of the visiting locker room area during games. Proper credentials are required for admittance. There have been no surveillance cameras in the space.“We spoke to security … they usually mentioned process was followed,” Van Ryswyk mentioned. “It looks as if we’ve got counterfeit tickets for every game. Did somebody counterfeit a go for access to the locker room?”

Van Ryswyk said investigators are compiling a list of everybody who had access to the Iowa locker room. This consists of reporters, members of the Iowa soccer workers and security staff.

Police had a tough time investigating the scene following the game because it was a mass of gamers, coaches and media. Cell phones were the main issues taken in addition to about $50 in cash.

NCAA changes hardship waiver guidelines in response to outcry over Kerwin Okoro

One month after the denial of Kerwin Okoro’s waiver request sparked nationwide outcry, the NCAA has achieved the smart factor.

Not only has it reversed course and granted Okoro’s petition to play immediately this season at Rutgers, it also has amended the flawed wording of the rule that led to his waiver being denied in the first place.

NCAA vice president Kevin Lennon advised CBSSports.com on Monday scholar-athletes will now not have to sit out a yr in the event that they switch nearer to house because of the death of an immediate member of the family. The NCAA initially denied Okoro’s hardship waiver final month despite the fact that the 6-foot-5 Bronx native left Iowa State to be nearer to his family after his father died in December from a stroke at age 72 and his brother died from colon cancer two months later at age 28.

“If any person transfers after the demise of a direct family member, now the staff is armed with pointers from the committee that claims, ‘We want you to look at this in a different way,'” Lennon informed CBSSports.com. “That is the guideline moving forward.”

Give the NCAA credit score for making the appropriate decision to reword this rule, nevertheless it’s nonetheless exhausting to consider this wasn’t obvious within the first place.

At a time when players receive hardship waivers on account of the firing of their father or the illness of a relative, someone at the NCAA ought to have realized how it could look if the demise of Okoro’s father and brother wasn’t given the identical weight. As an alternative the problem likely didn’t rise excessive enough up the choice-making meals chain, resulting in national outrage and a PR calamity that might easily have been averted.

The rule change will likely be part of Okoro’s legacy, however he won’t be the one one who advantages.

Drew Wilson, who started 18 games for Missouri State last season, transferred to Oral Roberts this spring to be closer to residence after the loss of life of his sister. The NCAA initially denied the 6-foot-7 ahead’s waiver request, but introduced over the weekend that it had modified its mind. Wilson, like Okoro, won’t have to take a seat out a yr.

Despite Oklahoma’s decision, the Big 12 starting quarterback waters are pretty muddy

Is the convention of excessive powered offenses now the convention of quarterback indecisions?

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”20″]

As Big 12 groups have piled up the points and yards, star quarterbacks have been an integral half. Robert Griffin III. Landry Jones. Collin Klein. Brandon Weeden. The record goes on.

And the listing is empty coming into the season. Texas’ David Ash is the one returning quarterback with important starting expertise final season. It is a large motive why you can make a official case for plenty of groups as convention champions.

Oklahoma’s resolution to go with redshirt freshman Trevor Knight as its starting quarterback would not do much to clear up the beginning quarterback picture. It’s in-state rivals, Oklahoma State, are going with a two-QB system to start the yr. And 4 different groups are both enjoying coy or haven’t selected a starting quarterback for the beginning of the season. That is half of the ten-crew conference. USC, you are not alone.

Oklahoma State: Mike Gundy mentioned Thursday that Clint Chelf and J.W. Walsh would cut up time in the season opener against Mississippi State. Both Chelf, a senior, and Walsh, a sophomore, began games final season, though Walsh posted a higher completion share and threw for extra yards per pass. Chelf began the final 5 games of the season, including the Cowboys’ bowl blowout of Purdue.

The Cowboys are a preferred pick to win the conference for the second time in three seasons. If that is going to come back true, they’re going to doubtless have to choose one quarterback and persist with him. It says here that Walsh turns into that guy.

Kansas State: Klein is gone, and in true Invoice Snyder vogue, the coach isn’t saying a lot about his beginning quarterback for the opener in opposition to North Dakota State but.

The candidates are Daniel Sams and Jake Waters. Sams backed up Klein last season and Waters is a transfer from Iowa Western Neighborhood College, where he threw for 3,501 yards and 39 TDs versus three interceptions final season and was a JuCo All-American. In situational responsibility final season, Sams threw just eight passes, but he ran 32 occasions for 235 yards and 3 TDs.

We’ll probably find out who’s going to begin on Tuesday, based on the Kansas City Star. That is when Snyder traditionally pronounces his starting quarterback if there is a preseason competition.

TCU: Casey Pachall is the most experienced returning QB in the conference after beginning 13 video games in 2011, but he solely played 5 games in TCU’s first Big 12 season before left the staff in October and entered rehab after a DWI arrest.

His replacement for the final eight video games was redshirt freshman Trevone Boykin, who was up and down. In his first sport as a starter at home in opposition to Iowa State, he threw three interceptions and TCU’s 12 game successful streak was snapped. A week later at Baylor, he did not turn the ball over, threw 4 TDs and TCU received by 28.

TCU coach Gary Patterson says that Pachall is “not even the same individual” after returning to the group. However, he’s not asserting a starting QB anytime in the quick future. TCU performs LSU in Dallas August 31 and Patterson would like to hold the Tigers at the hours of darkness about his plans as long as attainable.

Texas Tech: Is a true freshman going to start out at quarterback in Kliff Kingsbury’s first game as Texas Tech head coach?

It’s very attainable.

Michael Brewer, the favorite for the beginning job, has been sidelined with a back injury and isn’t training. That is opened up the position for freshmen Davis Webb and Baker Mayfield.

Mayfield is a most well-liked walk-on, though he was provided a scholarship from former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach at Washington State. After playing in high school at Lake Travis in Austin, he elected to remain in-state and stroll on with the Purple Raiders with the hope of finally getting a scholarship. Webb enrolled in January and took part in spring practices.

Kingsbury hasn’t mentioned which course he’s leaning, though he did go away the choice open of a plan just like Gundy’s where both quarterbacks see motion towards SMU.

West Virginia: Geno Smith is now in a quarterback circus with Mark Sanchez in New York, so the candidates for West Virginia’s beginning quarterback are Florida State switch Clint Trickett, Ford Childress or Paul Millard.

Or there might already be a starter named and we simply do not know. Last week, coach Dana Holgorsen said that he was close to naming a starter amongst the three, though he would preserve that call personal.

If a decision has, or hasn’t, been made, Trickett was considered the favourite. Final season at Florida State, Trickett completed 22-34 passes across seven games as EJ Manuel’s backup. He was able to transfer immediately as a graduate pupil.
