Ramirez leaves after taking pitch to left hand

UPDATE: In accordance with a live replace through the SportsNet LA broadcast, the workforce's training staff confirmed X-rays were unfavorable. The Dodgers have since officially introduced the news. Exhale, Dodgers fans.

Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez left Wednesday night time's sport after being hit by a pitch in the left hand. He was in obvious ache afterwards, and whereas he tried to speak supervisor Don Mattingly and the coaching staff into allowing him to remain in, he was faraway from the game instantly.

Listed below are two angles of the pitch:

Ramirez, 30, missed the start of last season with a thumb harm suffered while diving for a ball during the World Baseball Classic. He additionally missed time with a hamstring drawback. Despite the Dodgers-Giants rivalry, it is fairly clear Ryan Vogelsong did not hit Hanley deliberately.

In 14 games coming into Wednesday, Ramirez was hitting291/.381/.527 (147 OPS+) with seven doubles and two home runs. He hit a robust345/.402/.638 (189 OPS+) with 20 home runs in 86 video games after returning from the thumb and hamstring issues last season.

The Dodgers have not but released an replace on Ramirez. Clearly dropping him for any length of time could be devastating.

Cardinals trade Freese for Angels’ Bourjos

Angels Get Freese In Deal With Cards

The St. Louis Cardinals have sent third baseman and former World Series MVP David Freese to the Los Angeles Angels for outfielder Peter Bourjos as part of a four-player trade, the teams confirmed Friday.

David Freese

Third baseman David Freese, who hit only nine home runs last season for the Cardinals, has been traded to the Los Angeles Angels.

In addition to Freese, the Angels will receive reliever Fernando Salas. The Cardinals will receive outfield prospect Randal Grichuk.

Freese, a hero in St. Louis' 2011 World Series run, fell off markedly this past season. After hitting293 with 20 home runs and making the National League All-Star team in 2012, he batted262 with nine homers in 2013.

Freese's OPS dropped from839 to721, and he hit only179 (10-for-56) in the playoffs. Freese fills the third-base void in Anaheim that was created when the Angels traded Alberto Callaspo to Oakland in July.

Even if Freese fails to regain his 2012 All-Star form, he still appears to be a significant upgrade at third base for the Angels. Manager Mike Scioscia used seven players at that position last season, with Callaspo, Chris Nelson, Luis Jimenez and Andrew Romine logging the bulk of the at-bats.

Overall, Angels third basemen ranked 27th in the majors with an aggregate637 OPS, and they hit only eight home runs. Only Miami, with a total of three homers, got less power out of the third-base spot.

Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto has made upgrading the pitching staff a prime focus of his offseason activity, and now he has about $4 million of added payroll. The Angels are hoping that Salas, who has 186 strikeouts in 192 1/3 big league innings, can help improve a bullpen that went 20-27 with a 4.12 ERA.

Bourjos, a superb defender in center field, is a strong candidate to take over the position from Jon Jay in St. Louis. With Freese gone, the Cardinals could slide Matt Carpenter to third base and play prospect Kolten Wong at second.

"We are excited to be adding the outfield defense and speed that Bourjos provides, and Grichuk is a top prospect who will be in the mix with some of our other top position players such as Oscar Taveras and Stephen Piscotty " Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. "We wish both David and Fernando the best and thank them for their contributions – especially the many memorable moments they provided during the 2011 championship season."

Grichuk was selected with the 24th overall pick by the Angels in the 2009 draft – one spot ahead of Mike Trout.

MLB owners OK new replay; players, umps to vote

There may be no need to argue or discuss anymore, if the players and umpires approve this proposal.
There could also be no have to argue or talk about anymore, if the players and umpires approve this proposal. (USATSI)

Main League Baseball’s proposed expanded instant replay challenge system nonetheless must be permitted by the MLB Players Affiliation and the World Umpires Affiliation, but the 30 membership house owners unanimously permitted the proposal at the GM meetings in Orlando, Fla., MLB introduced Thursday.

“My father always said life is a sequence of changes and I’ve made an adjustment,” commissioner Bud Selig said in a press convention Thursday (by way of usatoday.com). “There isn’t one play or one instance that changed my thoughts. It has simply occurred over time. I do know we’re doing the suitable factor.”

The unique plan was for every supervisor to have one problem within the first six innings of every recreation with two more obtainable per crew from the seventh inning till the tip of the sport. That has been tweaked, though, because now the system calls for two challenges per crew, per recreation with no rules on when the challenges are used.

This could be negotiated down to at least one problem per staff, per sport as a way to get this measure permitted by either the gamers or umpires.

Additionally, if a supervisor wins his problem, he’ll get to retain it. From that light, there’s actually no limit on challenges, as long as they are used to appropriate incorrect calls. And, really, there wouldn’t be a lot harm in limiting managers to 1 challenge. If he wins, he’d get to maintain it.

The challenges do not apply to performs that were already reviewable – boundary plays, akin to honest/foul calls on residence runs or fan interference on home runs. Those will still be dealt with by the umpires as they have been this past season.

Additionally, balls and strikes aren’t reviewable. MLB seems to be conveying – at least initially – that just about every thing else can be reviewable. We’ll know full details if and when the proposal has handed and expanded replay turns into part of the written rules.

Fan sues Royals for mascot hot dog thrown at face

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – If it had been a foul ball or broken bat that struck John Coomer within the eye as he watched a Kansas City Royals sport, it’s unlikely the courts would have pressured the staff to pay for the surgeries and struggling he’s endured.

But as a result of it was a sizzling dog thrown by the crew mascot – behind the again, no much less – he just might have a case.

The Missouri Supreme Court is weighing whether the “baseball rule” – a legal normal that protects teams from being sued over fan accidents caused by events on the field, courtroom or rink – ought to apply to accidents caused by mascots or different personnel that groups employ to engage followers. As a result of the case may set a legal precedent, it may change how teams in other cities and sports approach interacting with fans at their games.

Kansas City Royals mascotA fan hit within the eye by a hot canine thrown by Sluggerrr, the mascot for the Kansas Metropolis Royals, has had two surgical procedures after struggling a indifferent retina. He’s suing the Royals.

Coomer, of Overland Park, Kan., says he was injured at a September 2009 Royals game when the group’s lion mascot, Sluggerrr, threw a four-ounce, foil-wrapped wiener into the stands that struck his eye. He needed to have two surgeries – one to restore a indifferent retina and the opposite to remove a cataract that developed and implant a synthetic lens. Coomer’s imaginative and prescient is worse now than before he was hurt and he has paid roughly $4,800 in medical prices, mentioned his lawyer, Robert Tormohlen.

Coomer, fifty three, declined to debate the case. His lawsuit seeks an award of “over $20,000″ from the workforce, but the actual amount he is searching for is likely a lot higher. Tormohlen declined to debate the precise amount.

The Jackson County jurors who first heard the case two years in the past sided with the Royals, saying Coomer was fully at fault for his harm because he wasn’t conscious of what was occurring around him. An appeals court docket overturned that decision in January, nonetheless, ruling that whereas being struck by a baseball is an inherent risk followers assume at video games, being hit with a sizzling dog isn’t.

The state Supreme Court heard oral arguments final month however didn’t point out when it would challenge its ruling.

Few circumstances have addressed the level of authorized responsibility, or obligation, a mascot owes to fans, so Coomer’s case is being closely watched by teams all through the nation, mentioned Tormohlen.

“If a jury finds that the activity at situation is an inherent and unavoidable risk, the Royals owe no obligation to their spectators,” Tormohlen stated. “No case has prolonged the no-duty rule to the activities of a mascot.”

The Royals, whose spokesman declined to comment on the case whereas it’s pending, have argued that the hot canine toss has been a popular fan attraction at Kauffman Stadium since 2000 and is as much part of the game expertise as strikeouts and home runs.

With such amenities as mascot races, T-shirt cannons, free Wi-Fi and sushi stands, teams have been doing all the things they can to persuade followers that the live expertise is well worth the high ticket and concession prices and is better than watching games on television.

“You have got this competitors with teams engaged in pushing the envelope making an attempt to make the experience at the occasion better than what you can experience at residence,” mentioned Jordan Kobritz, a professor within the sports activities management division at SUNY Cortland. “You also have the fan mentality through which risk in the present day is extra tolerable than it’s been in our historical past.”

A ruling in Coomer’s favor, or one which at the very least assigns partial blame to the mascot, might pressure teams to rethink their promotions, or not less than take extra measures to keep spectators secure, Kobritz mentioned.

Bob Jarvis, a sports activities law professor at Nova Southeastern University in Florida, stated a 1997 California case set an vital precedent when a state appeals court docket dominated that mascots are usually not a necessary part of a baseball game. In that case, a minor league baseball team’s dinosaur brushed towards a fan, distracting him proper earlier than he was struck by a ball that broke several bones in his face. The court mentioned mascot antics aren’t important or integral to the enjoying of a game.

Furthermore, not all courts have treated the baseball rule as sacrosanct. Earlier this year, the Idaho Supreme Court docket allowed a fan who misplaced a watch to a foul ball at a minor league game to proceed together with his lawsuit towards the workforce. The court docket stated that since baseball fan accidents are so uncommon in Idaho, there didn’t appear to be a compelling motive for the court to step in.

Within the Kansas City case, a ruling within the Royals’ favor would point out that mascots are, indeed, an essential a part of the sport expertise, Jarvis said. If that happens, the Kansas Metropolis case would likely turn into the one attorneys have a look at when deciding whether or not to file a lawsuit on behalf of an injured fan.

“Should you could get a court docket to go the other manner and say in-recreation leisure is a pure a part of taking part in baseball within the U.S. in the 21st century, that may be an amazing precedent that might reduce off future lawsuits,” Jarvis said.

Ortiz named MVP after hitting .688 vs. Cards

BOSTON – Most Priceless Papi.

David Ortiz walked off because the World Series MVP on Wednesday night, capping a dominant week through which he spurred the Boston Purple Sox over St. Louis with a mix of energy, patience and a most timely pep speak.

Ortiz hoisted reliever Koji Uehara after the final out of a 6-1 win, then Large Papi raised the gleaming gold trophy in his crowning achievement.

“I know I’m one of many forces for this ballgame and I prefer to take things private,” he stated. “And that’s been my complete profession, a challenge.

“I wasn’t trying to be the man, but I do know I received to get something done to keep the line shifting. I don’t even have to do something at present, I assume, the rest of the staff took over.”

Now a three-time champion, Oritz is the final hyperlink to the Crimson Sox workforce that swept the Cardinals in 2004 and ended an 86-yr title drought.

“He just keeps writing new chapters,” general manager Ben Cherington. “I know nice gamers are great, are more likely to be great in any second but it surely’s arduous to see him in these moments and never suppose that there is something completely different about him. He is locked in. We’ve seen him locked in before but to do it on this stage, and do it in so many large moments, I am unable to add anything extra to the legend that is already there, but he retains writing more chapters on his own.”

After some time, the Cardinals merely gave up attempting to get him out. Ortiz walked four times – three of them intentional – within the 6-1 win Wednesday night in Recreation 6 that clinched the championship.

Ortiz CelebrationMVP David Ortiz hugs supervisor John Farrell after a World Sequence that noticed him acquire six RBIs.

When Ortiz came to the plate for the last time, within the eighth inning with the end result safely in hand, Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina stood up and spoke to him within the batter’s field. Molina softly patted Ortiz twice on the facet, too.

Effectively accomplished, pal.

Ortiz watched 4 extra large ones and trotted to first base, having piled up totals that not even slow-pitch softball players dream about: He reached base a whopping 19 occasions in 25 plate appearances – the second-most in a single World Series behind the Giants’ Barry Bonds (21) in 2002.

The sellout crowd broke into thunderous chants of “MVP! MVP!” every time Ortiz batted. Fairly a turnaround for the 37-year-previous slugger who badly slumped within the AL Championship Collection.

Ortiz hit eleven-for-sixteen (.688) with a 1.948 OPS, two home runs and six RBIs in opposition to the Cardinals, and just missed a grand slam when Carlos Beltran robbed him by reaching over the short bullpen wall. By comparison, the remainder of the Purple Sox hit169 with a 484 OPS and two home runs.

Asked to explain Ortiz, manager John Farrell paused.

“Well, I would in all probability moderately let his bat do the talking, as a result of it’s pretty particular,” he stated.

Ortiz also drew eight walks and legged out just a few infield hits, helped by St. Louis second baseman Matt Carpenter taking part in method out in shallow right area. At one level, Ortiz tied a Series file by reaching base in nine straight journeys.

“He is as hot as anyone you’re going to see this time of 12 months,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. “We tried to make powerful pitches in tough conditions, tried to pitch around him at occasions.”

Ortiz’s760 on-base percentage and batting average had been the second-highest in Sequence historical past, trailing only Billy Hatcher’s marks of800 and750 in 1990 for Cincinnati.

As Ortiz got here up within the first inning, Molina and plate umpire Jim Joyce talked about him.

“This man’s unbelievable,” Molina said on Fox audio.

“He is fun to observe,” Joyce mentioned.

Yet for all the impact he made swinging the bat in getting 11 of Boston’s 41 hits – or just standing there and watching the Cardinals pitch around him – Ortiz made an equally vital contribution along with his words.

With St. Louis leading the Sequence 2-1 and the Red Sox scuffling in Recreation four, Ortiz known as his bearded band together for an impromptu huddle in the dugout.

Ortiz mentioned he merely advised the fellows to loosen up, keep loose and respect the moment. His teammates advised a special story after Boston rallied to win.

“It was like 24 kindergartners looking up at their instructor. He obtained everybody’s consideration and we appeared him proper within the eyes,” stated Jonny Gomes, who answered with a profitable dwelling run. “That message was fairly powerful.”

That is also what the Purple Sox count on from their Dominican-born thumper, identified for his neatly tailor-made suits and dazzling diamond jewelry.

Whatever the Purple Sox want, and whenever they want it, he’s ready. When the Collection shifted to St. Louis and there was no designated hitter, he adeptly moved from the DH spot to first base.

He did the identical factor method back in the 2004 Collection, and once more in 2007 when the Pink Sox swept Colorado.

As the Crimson Sox celebrated on the field after the ultimate out, Ortiz considered what it meant to win a 3rd title. Straightforward, he answered.

“That means I’m getting old,” he mentioned.

MLB World Series Recap- Red Sox Take Series Lead

World Series Game 5- Red Sox wins 3-1

Best-of-Seven- Boston leads 3-2

Boston pitcher Jon Lester once again got the best of Adam Wainwright by out-pitching the Cardinal ace 3-1 giving the Red Sox a 3-2 series lead and one win away from yet another World Series title.

Pretty special time,” Lester said.

With the Red Sox heading home for Games 6 and 7 (if necessary), they like their chances of adding their third title in the last decade and doing in it in Fenway Park… a place that hasn’t seen a World Series won since 1918.

The fact is we’re going home,” manager John Farrell said. “Going back to a place that our guys love to play in, in front of our fans.”

This atmosphere here, these three games, has been phenomenal. We know it’s going to be equal to that., if not better. And we’re excited about going home in the position we are.”

Game 6 will feature John Lackey (2-1, 3.26 ERA) against Cardinal rookie sensation Michael Wacha (4-0, 1.00 ERA) with the chance to close it out.

With Wacha on the hill Wednesday for Game 6, St. Louis has to feel good and a possible seventh game on Halloween night.

It will be legendary if we go into Boston and win two games,” Game 5 loser Wainwright (0-2) said.

It was a tough loss. It was 1-1 in the seventh—that was obviously the game. Tip your cap to Ross; he hit a double to take the lead,” Wainwright said. “Their guy Lester did a good job.”

Jon Lester (2-0) allowed just one run on four-hits over 7 2/3 innings, striking out seven.

I think the biggest thing is me and Rossy have had a good rhythm,” Lester said. “Early on, we just went back to our game plan from Game 1 and just fell back on that and really just tried to make them swing the bats early, and we were able do that.”

The Cardinals down 3-2 have been in this position before against the Texas Rangers in the 2011 World Series and came back to win it all.

The guys know what we have to do,” manager Mike Matheny said. “We have to play the game. They have to lock arms, trust each other and play the game the right way. Most of it is going to be the mentality of not buying into any kind of stats, any kind of predictions, any kind of odds. And go out and play the game.”

With Michael Wacha on the mound…. I like their chances of extending the series.

David ‘Big Papi’ Ortiz is 11-for-15 (.733) in the Series with two home runs, six RBIs and four walks.

Game 6 is Wednesday in Boston at 8:07PM EST

Catcher Brian McCann’s career823 OPS will make him a lovely target in free company. (USATSI)

Not many gamers ought to take pleasure in a greater free agency than catcher Brian McCann.

McCann’s constant offensive numbers, his relative youth and even his critical angle ought to support him as he approaches the free-agent market. However another big plus is the large number of huge-market groups that’ll be searching for a catcher.

Early predictions that he might attain $a hundred million could also be a bit ambitious, nevertheless it has to help that the Crimson Sox, Yankees, Rangers, Cubs and Angels all are candidates to signal a catcher and could be main McCann players. The Blue Jays and White Sox are among ther teams that might have an interest, as effectively. The Giants and Rockies are stated to like McCann very a lot, but Colorado could be very unlikely to have the ability to afford him and it is exhausting to think about how the San Francisco would make it work with famous person catcher Buster Posey and younger first baseman Brandon Belt.

The incumbent Braves like McCann but are positive to spend their money elsewhere contemplating their tight funds, with a participant payroll that has stayed between $90 million and $100 million six straight years, and a decent catching situation, with Evan Gattis and prospect Christian Bethancourt, a defensive whiz, as younger, value-efficient alternate options.

The Rangers have lengthy had an curiosity in McCann, as Danny Knobler wrote early this month. However what may really drive the value is the possible interest from among the largest markets, together with the Yankees, who had Chris Stewart and Francisco Cervelli catch this yr, and the Crimson Sox, whose catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia can be a free agent.

McCann, who batted256 with 20 residence runs and fifty seven RBI this year, has an823 OPS for his career, exceptional for a catcher. He is hit not less than 20 home runs in seven of eight full seasons, hitting 18 the one time he fell brief. He is a seven-time All-Star.

MLB NLDS Game 5 Recap- Cardinals Win Series

NLDS Game 5: Cardinals win series 3-2

The St. Louis Cardinals behind another brilliant performance by their ace Adam Wainwright (2-0) beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-1 on Wednesday night to advance to the National League Championship Series.

The Cardinals backed by a complete game by Wainwright and 2 two-run home runs by David Freese and Matt Adams earned the right to host the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS beginning Friday night.

Wainwright in his complete game scattered 8 hits, allowed only one earned run and struck out six.

Pirates’ rookie pitcher Gerrit Cole (1-1) was unable to duplicate his Game 2 performance and took the loss lasting only 5.0 innings.

The Pirates with their back up against the wall early used six pitchers total in Wednesday night’s game, but didn’t have an offensive answer for Adam Wainwright.

I wanted it bad. It’s probably the most nervous I’ve ever been,” Wainwright said. “I don’t get a whole lot of nerves when I pitch. Before I pitched today, I was pretty nervous.”

The Cardinals have now improved to 8-1 when facing postseason elimination the past three years.

David Freese applied the pressure early on the Bucs by hitting a two-run homer in the second inning to get the Cardinals going.

I’m just so fired up for this team and this city right now,” Wainwright said. “Cardinal fans were rockin’ today and I’m just fired up to be here.”

With the Pirates being eliminated, they have now not won a postseason series since the 1979 World Series.

It was David Freese who put the Cardinals on his shoulders back in 2011 when he captured both the NLCS and World Series MVP trophies.

He’s a stud. He’s a big-time player at big-time moments,” Wainwright said. “And that’s what we expect of him and that’s what he continues to deliver.”

Now with both NLDS winners ready to go, the stage is set for an exciting National League Championship Series which will begin Friday.

Stay tuned for my NLCS preview and series pick.

MLB Scores NLDS Game 4 Recap- Dodgers Win Series

MLB Scores NLDS Game 4: Dodgers win series 3-1

After two failed bunt attempts by Juan Uribe to advance Yasiel Puig to third base in the bottom eight, Dodger manager Don Mattingly decided to take the bunt sign off with two strikes… and Uribe responded by hitting a towering moon shot deep into the Dodgers’ bullpen to send the Los Angeles Dodgers into the National League Championship Series for the first time since 2009.

After blowing a 2-0 lead to the Atlanta Braves and finding themselves down 3-2 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, rookie sensation Yasiel Puig, who has been a spark plug for the Dodgers since early June got the inning started by hitting a “hustle” double down the right-field line. Next up was Uribe who after failing to lay down the bunt twice, swung away on a 2-2 pitch by losing pitcher David Carpenter and it was no doubter as he launched it deep into the L.A. night.

I (wanted) to have a good swing and try to win the game,” Uribe said.

Brian Wilson who pitched a scoreless eighth inning got the victory and Kenley Jansen struck out the side in the ninth inning to send the Dodgers on to the next series.

Dodger outfielder Carl Crawford hit two more home runs in the first and third innings to give the Dodgers the early 2-0 lead. Crawford hit three home runs in two games to help spark the Dodgers.

I’m just trying to stay square,” Crawford said.

This team has a lot fun. We don’t think about being the team to beat and all that stuff. We just go out there and play and try to have fun,” Crawford said.

There was much conversation about bringing back Clayton Kershaw on three days rest for the first time in his career. The scheduled starter Ricky Nolasco was pushed to give Kershaw a chance to close out the series. He responded with six solid innings.

Kershaw gave up two unearned runs and three hits.

On losing pitcher David Carpenter, “You don’t want it to ever end the way we ended today. But we had the right guy out there. Carp has been good for us,” Gonzalez said. “There is nothing to be ashamed of.”

To end the way it did tonight, it’s going to hurt. It’s going to be a long way back,” Fredi Gonzalez said. “But tip your hat to the Dodgers and congratulate Donnie and his staff. The sad thing is there are no more games, you know?”

The Braves who led the National League in home runs, were out homered 7-1 in the series.

The Dodgers will now await the winner of the Pittsburgh-St. Louis series. Their Game 5 showdown is on Wednesday in St. Louis. Stay tuned for more MLB Scores and recaps
