Union beats Minnesota for first hockey title

PHILADELPHIA – Union College won its first NCAA hockey title Saturday night, scoring three times in a 1:54 span in the first period in a 7-4 victory over Minnesota on Saturday night.

Mike Vecchione tied it at 2 with 4:01 left in the first, Eli Lichtenwald gave the Dutchmen the lead 57 seconds later, and Daniel Ciampini capped the spree with 2:57 to go.

"I don't think anyone will call us Cinderella anymore," said Shayne Gostisbehere, who had a goal and two assists. "These guys, my brothers, they do everything for me. I don't care about anything else, we're national champions."

Max Novak, Kevin Sullivan and Mat Bodie also scored and Colin Stevens made 36 saves for Union (32-6-4), the 2,200-student liberal arts college in Schenectady, N.Y., that competes in Division III in all other sports.

"A little bit speechless right now," third-year coach Rick Bennett said. "Just happy for our school, for this program and the past players. It's an unbelievable experience."

Justin Kloos, Sam Warning, Taylor Cammarata and Hudson Fasching scored for Minnesota (28-7-6). Adam Wilcox stopped 41 shots for the five-time champion Gophers.

"Both teams are better defensively than a 7-4 score shows," said Bodie, the Union captain. "It's just one of those games where crazy bounces happen. We just wanted to stick with our process. We thought we were playing pretty well and great things happened."

Cammarata pulled Minnesota within one with the lone goal in the second period, but Novak restored the two-goal cushion on a deflection at 5:31 of the third.

Fasching cut it to 5-4 with a power-play goal with 3:40 left. Sullivan put it away with 1:22 to go, and Bodie scored into an empty net with 44.2 seconds remaining.

Union College Dutchmen

The Union College Dutchmen went 16-0-1 in their last 17 games en route to their first-ever NCAA hockey title.

"Just one shift at a time," Bodie said. "This is the biggest game of our lives, hands down, but you've got to treat it like any other game. It was tough, I had people texting me, people calling me and stuff, and, you know, it was real tough to keep that mindset, but with our sport psychologist we were able to get that done."

Kloos opened the scoring on a rebound 2:37 into the first period. Gostisbehere responded for Union by weaving through three opponents and beating Wilcox with a wrist shot to glove side at 9:26. Less than a minute later, Warning squeaked a bad-angle shot between Stevens and the pipe to put Minnesota up 2-1.

Union won its final 12 games and went 16-0-1 in its last 17. Ciampini scored three goals in the Dutchmen's 5-4 victory over Boston College in the semifinals Thursday night.

First Pennsylvania Bar Gets Gambling OK

Small-scale gambling at bars in Pennsylvania is one step closer to reality after state liquor regulators gave the OK Wednesday for the first gambling license of its kind.

According to reporting from WFMZ , the Midway Tavern in Hanover, Adams County has been given state approval to run pull-tab games, daily drawings and charity raffles.

It is expected that 2,000 bars will apply for licenses to offer gambling. Less than a dozen have done so thus far. A license costs a couple grand.

Taxes on the games are expected to net the state around $100 million, eventually. Pennsylvania, like pretty much everywhere, is experiencing budget issues in the post-Great Recession era.

The bar gambling law was signed by the governor just this past November.

The state has the second-largest commercial casino industry in the country. In 2013, Pennsylvania casinos brought in $3.1 billion from gamblers. The state has around a dozen casinos at the moment, with more on the way. Right now, developers are competing for the right to build a brand new Las Vegas-style casino in Philadelphia.

Pennsylvania is also taking a look at allowing online gambling.

Maddux won’t be first unanimous HOF inductee

It is official: Greg Maddux will not be baseball’s first unanimous Hall of Famer.

(USATSI)It is official: Greg Maddux will not be baseball's first unanimous Hall of Famer.
MORE: FA tracker: position players | FA tracker: pitchers
As of 10: 30 a. m. ET on Tuesday morning, Greg Maddux had appeared on all 149 Hall of Fame ballots collected by Baseball Think Factory. No player has ever been unanimously voted into Cooperstown but Maddux is, by far, the best candidate in recent memory. The guy’s career resume is impeccable.

Alas, we now know Maddux will not be an unanimous inductee. MLB. com’s Ken Gurnick is the first to announce he did not vote for the 355-game winner. Here is his ballot and justification:

KEN GURNICK, Dodgers beat reporter

Morris has flaws – a 3. 90 ERA, for example. But he gets my vote for more than a decade of ace performance that included three 20-win seasons, Cy Young Award votes in seven seasons and Most Valuable Players votes in five. As for those who played during the period of PED use, I won’t vote for any of them.

Yes, Gurnick voted for Jack Morris and no one else. I don’t think Morris is a Hall of Famer but he certainly has a strong case and voting for him isn’t unreasonable. The whole “I won’t vote for anyone who played during the Steroid Era” thing might be, though.

For starters, the term Steroid Era or “period of PED use” is incredibly ambiguous. There is no defined start or end point and there never will be, so it seems weird to assume Morris never pitched against (or alongside) PED users. In fact, his career and Maddux’s career overlap by nine years (1986-94). If we’re assuming 1995 is the start of the Steroid Era, well Maddux had 131 wins, three Cy Youngs and 40. 7 WAR before then. Morris retired with 43. 8 WAR.

Maddux will almost certainly be announced as a Hall of Famer on Wednesday but the odds were always very small it would have been unanimous. Now we know it’s official. Oh well.

First down flub clouds Redskins’ final drive

Confusion On Redskins’ Last Drive

Merril Hoge breaks down the confusion over the primary down on the ultimate Redskins’ drive in a 24-17 loss to the Giants.

Confusion On Redskins’ Last Drive

LANDOVER, Md. – The Washington Redskins thought they had a first down, so, too did the chain gang. One group didn’t think it was a first down and, ultimately, they were the group that mattered: the officers.

And that led to controversy on the end of the Redskins’ 24-17 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday evening.

It started with a second-and-5 completion to receiver Pierre Garcon to the Redskins’ 45-yard line with one minute, 37 seconds remaining. The officials marked him short of the primary down, but the chains on the Redskins’ sideline moved as if Garcon had been awarded a first down.

There was little doubt in the Redskins’ minds that they’d a primary down. There was no doubt for referee Jeff Triplette that it was third down.

“We signaled third down on the sector,” Triplette instructed pool reporter Zac Boyer of the Washington Instances. “The stakes had been moved incorrectly. After that play, we mentioned it was nonetheless third down. We had signaled third down previous to the play starting. The chains simply bought moved incorrectly.”

The gamers saw the chains and thought Garcon had made a primary down.

“The chains moved instantly and it was first down,” Redskins guard Kory Lichtensteiger stated. “Subsequent factor I know it is not… We thought it was first and 10 so we ran the play. Next factor we know it’s fourth and 1 impulsively. I don’t know how they will take it again. I really feel if it is marked, it’s important to go along with it. That modifications everything for our offense.”

Ogilvy We signaled third down on the sphere. The stakes had been moved incorrectly. After that play, we stated it was still third down. We had signaled third down prior to the play starting. The chains simply bought moved incorrectly.

- Jeff Triplette, referee

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan mentioned he had requested for a measurement following Garcon’s catch. Nonetheless, Shanahan mentioned an official told him it wasn’t obligatory.

“He said, ‘You don’t have to, it is a first down,’ ” Shanahan mentioned. “I noticed it as a primary down on the other facet and he signaled to maneuver the chains on our side. I requested him if it was fourth down. He stated he already told me it was a primary down… Then, after I saw it was fourth down I asked him, ‘You already told me it was first down.’ That was fairly disappointing.”

Shanahan said the unnamed official did not respond to that. His declare that he was instructed it was a primary down was relayed to Triplette.

“I can’t respond to that,” Triplette mentioned. “I do not know what occurred. I simply know that we had signaled third down.”

The Giants players didn’t assume Garcon had gained a first down.

“When I noticed the marker stated first down, I used to be attempting to signal to Coach [Tom] Coughlin, like, ‘You may want to challenge that.’ Because it was not a first down,” Giants defensive finish Justin Tuck said.

“He was short. Fortunate for us it worked out, but it surely wasn’t a primary down. All people on the sphere could see that.”

Giants linebacker Jon Beason mentioned, “What it regarded like, they marked it first down on one aspect and not on the other aspect, in order that they thought they had a primary down although they did not. He [Mike Shanahan] was UP-SET, and he’s over there yelling, and I was speaking to him saying, ‘However you didn’t get it.’ I do not assume he might hear me, however I used to be pointing. It wasn’t a first down. All people makes mistakes, I assume.”

Mike Shanahan

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan was heated on the sidelines as officers mistakenly led his group to imagine they’d earned a primary down on Washington’s closing drive.

On third and 1, the Redskins referred to as a downfield cross to tight finish Fred Davis, who dropped a go on the New York 30.

“Coach [Kyle Shanahan] referred to as that play pondering it was first down,” Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III stated. “Then we come back and we think it’s second and 10 and so they’re yelling out its fourth down. No clarification, no measurement – didn’t stop the clock to allow the chains to move again.”

On fourth down, Garcon caught a brief hitch that may have resulted in a primary down, but safety Will Hill stripped him of the ball to finish the sport. Griffin stated offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan had known as a play considering it was second and 10. After they realized it was fourth down, Shanahan had to change his play name.

“Anytime you’ve gotten a sequence of plays you are not going to call a fast hitch on fourth and inches,” Mike Shanahan said. “So clearly it will have an effect on our play name.”

Griffin stated it didn’t trigger confusion within the huddle.

“We try to keep in the moment,” Griffin stated. “If the refs name it fourth down we strive to verify we’re treating that as a fourth down play. That is it. We’ve got to convert this to proceed to go on, tried to stay in the second after which after the very fact think about how every little thing transpired. We did a great job of that and got a superb play. It simply didn’t activate.”

Lions get first Thanksgiving win in 10 years

Lions Earn Rare Thanksgiving Day Win

DETROIT – Matthew Stafford and Reggie Bush did their part to keep the Aaron Rodgers-less Green Bay Packers in the game.

Stafford turned the ball over a few times and Bush did once.

Instead of crumbling and losing confidence, both players bounced back and helped the Detroit Lions put together a dominant performance after an awful start.

Stafford threw three touchdown passes, including one to Calvin Johnson, Bush had 182 yards of offense and scored, and Detroit scored 37 straight points to rout Green Bay 40-10 on Thursday.

“When we get out of our own way, we can be pretty special,” Bush said.

Early on, it looked as if the Lions were going to find another way to waste chances to win a game and take control of the NFC North.

“It’s easy when you lose a couple games in a row, particularly the fashion that we lost, for people to say, ‘Here we go again,’ ” Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said. “I’m sure there were some people that were saying that, but they weren’t on our sideline.”

The Lions (7-5) had lost their last two games, five consecutive against Green Bay and a franchise-record nine straight in their annual showcase on Thanksgiving.

“It’s a step in the right direction for us,” Stafford said. “I’m sure the turkey will taste better.”

The Packers (5-6-1) have a five-game winless streak for the first time since 2008.

“We’re not used to anything like this – not on this team,” Green Bay linebacker A.J. Hawk said. “This is something that is going to make a lot of guys on this team think, and that’s good. We need to find some answers because they just ran the ball down our throats.”

Bush responded from fumbling deep in Green Bay territory to score a 1-yard TD run that gave Detroit a 17-10 lead late in the first half. He finished with 117 yards rushing and 65 yards receiving. Bush’ backup, Joique Bell, ran for a career-high 94 yards and a score.

The Packers, painfully, are finding out how valuable Rodgers is for the franchise. Rodgers has missed four-plus games since fracturing his left collarbone. Green Bay has tied one and lost four without him.

“We’re a wounded team that got drilled by a good football team,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said.

Matt Flynn became the fourth starting quarterback for Green Bay this year and was sacked seven times, once by Ndamukong Suh for a safety.

Flynn didn’t fare as well as he did in his last start for Green Bay against the same opponent.

He was 10 of 20 for 139 yards with an interception and two fumbles. In the last game of the 2011 regular season, while Rodgers rested for the playoffs, Flynn threw for 480 yards and six TDs in a 45-41 win over Detroit.

“They might have a lot of the same guys, but I can say they’re a different defense,” Flynn said. “They’re flying around, creating havoc.”

The Packers have been leaning on rookie running back Eddie Lacy lately, but he was limited to 16 yards on 10 carries against one of the NFL’s best defenses against the run.

Detroit was balanced on offense.

Johnson had six receptions for 101 yards and a 20-yard TD to put the Lions up 24-10 early in the third quarter. He has 4,944 yards receiving in two-plus seasons, breaking Jerry Rice’s NFL record for yards receiving in a three-year stretch. Rice had 4,850 yards receiving from 1993 to 1995.

Stafford was 22 of 35 for 330 yards with two interceptions and a fumble that was returned by Morgan Burnett to put the Packers up 10-3 early in the second quarter.

After that, Detroit did whatever it wanted on both sides of the ball. And if the Lions didn’t start the game so poorly, the score could’ve been even more lopsided.

Detroit gained 561 yards and gave up just 126.

Green Bay didn’t have more than 100 yards of offense until Flynn threw a 56-yard pass to Jordy Nelson with a little more than a minute left. Flynn then fumbled in a fitting end for a game that he and his team would like to forget.

Packers guard Josh Sitton might’ve fired up the Lions, saying they were “dirtbags,” a couple days before the game, but didn’t seem to regret his choice of words.

“I don’t take back anything I said,” Sitton said. “But I don’t want to stand here and discuss it again.”

Around 500 or so players were allowed on each web site on the first day, according to studies. These gamers have been invited by the casinos to take part.

A statewide launch for everybody is scheduled for Nov. 26.

New Jersey legalized on-line poker in February for a simple cause: extra money.

Atlantic Metropolis’s fortunes aren’t what they as soon as have been, and the state needs more tax revenue.

One of many corporations that participated in Thursday’s “smooth launch” was none aside from Caesars Entertainment Corporation, owner of the esteemed World Sequence of Poker model. Caesars has multiple casino interests in Atlantic Metropolis.

“We are excited to be launching three of probably the most iconic U.S. gaming manufacturers on-line for those inside New Jersey borders,” the agency stated in a press release. “With […] the loyalty benefits of our Complete Rewards and Action Club programs, we all know shoppers will rapidly see why CaesarsCasino.com, HarrahsCasino.com, and WSOP com are a few of the best locations to play on-line on line casino video games for real cash in the Garden State. There are a dozen casinos in Atlantic, and most will likely be concerned with online playing.

Ed Orgeron: USC Should Not Make Him First Choice, But He Could Be an Appealing Backup Plan

Ed Orgeron USC

Ed Orgeron is 5-1 since taking up for Lane Kiffin as interim head coach. His players are nicely fed. The Coliseum is full and not booing. He’s fresh off an enormous Stanford upset. Orgeron wants the pinnacle coaching job. At this time, he’d be a well-liked choice with gamers, fans and marching band members. But ought to Pat Haden hear?

Hiring the interim coach can be risky. There’s the apparent threat of a fleeting infatuation with the rebound man. There’s a small sample dimension. One recreation, a handful of video games or even a complete season can come down to luck. If Michigan does not come again from a 17-zero deficit to beat Virginia in 1995, Lloyd Carr is not hired. If Luke Fickell has higher fortune in one-score video games (1-5) in 2011 the best way City Meyer did in 2012 (6-zero), he may be Ohio State’s head coach.

Bill Stewart at West Virginia is the instance of what to not do with an interim head coach. However, a extra applicable parallel could also be Dabo Swinney. He’s a popular, enthusiastic guy and an incredible recruiter. He has no expertise as a coordinator. Dabo closed the 2008 season with 4 wins in his last five, beat South Carolina and acquired the everlasting job. He had some initial growing pains. It’s still debatable how good he has been. Nevertheless it was not a foul hire.

Ed Orgeron fist pumpHiring a position coach can be dangerous. A specialist can instill his vision on one side of the ball (a la Saban or Chip Kelly). A position coach has a unique command dynamic. He should rely on two expereinced coordinators. That may make it more durable to jump in and force changes.

That kind of CEO-model head coach can work. It just raises the level of issue. A Dabo or a Brady Hoke can have a clear vision, promote the program and with nice hires on each side of the ball can succeed. That style coach can even see issues snowball and be overwhelmed. That occurred to Derek Dooley. That occurred to Ed Orgeron throughout his head teaching stint at Ole Miss.

Orgeron inherited a not so nice state of affairs in Oxford. He made it worse. He did recruit – Houston Nutt received two Cotton Bowls together with his players – but he by no means assembled the correct workers or introduced a route to progress. He went 3-21 in the SEC, which is abominable, even by Ole Miss requirements. Would the second attempt be totally different?

Perhaps. USC is a distinct job than Ole Miss. Orgeron wouldn’t be forging an id at a non-traditional energy. He can be restoring and refurbishing an extant one (which he is well conversant in). Additionally, crucially, his presumed employees is already in place. The continuity would be helpful recruiting this yr and heading into next season. The price is minimal, a raise for Ed Orgeron. However what occurs three years down the highway?

Ed Orgeron with a swordThe query for Pat Haden just isn’t whether or not Orgeron has executed enough to earn the job. It’s what he can do sooner or later. Evaluation of that is determined by the analysis of what is happening now with this collective staff. Is that this a high quality group scheming effectively and getting essentially the most out of its talent? Or, is it really, ridiculously gifted players attempting lots harder for the more affable substitute instructor?

Haden is doing the fitting things: waiting and never saying a word. If USC beats UCLA and sneaks into the Pac 12 title recreation, dumping Orgeron is a difficult, unpopular decision. If USC will get dumped by three touchdowns, it’s a a lot easier one.

Orgeron’s probabilities could rely upon the place USC is with its teaching search. If Kevin Sumlin, Chris Petersen or one other A-checklist candidate has real curiosity, that’s the clear route to go. However, USC may discover it onerous to pry a coach from a second-tier program. With new TV revenues, schools such as Northwestern, Vanderbilt and Baylor are paying huge cash (in wage and facilities) to maintain good coaches. If Haden is confronted with blowing up this system for a candidate on his B or C-checklist, staying the course with Coach O could also be a far more interesting possibility.

NFL Week 10 Game Recap- Detroit Tops Chicago To Take Over First Place

detroit lions

Detroit Lions (6-3)- 21

Chicago Bears (5-4)- 19

Line: DET -1.5

Over/Under: 52.5

The Detroit Lions marched into Soldier Field to battle the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon and walked out with sole possession of first-place in the NFC North as quarterback Matthew Stafford hit Calvin Johnson for the game winning touchdown for a 21-19 victory.

Stafford connected with Johnson on a 14-yard touchdown with 2:22 left in the fourth quarter to help the Lions (6-3) defeat their division rivals and take over first-place.

Both Johnson and Stafford read the Chicago defense and knew exactly what to do to find the end zone for six points.

I knew immediately that one of us on the outside was going to get it,” Johnson said. “So I just wanted to work , be patient and he threw a great ball.”

Detroit’s Reggie Bush also had a big day rushing for 105 yards on 14 carries as the Lions swept the season series against Chicago (5-4) for the first time since the 2007 season.

This is the first time since Week 5 of the 2005 season that the Lions have been all alone in first in the NFC North, according to STATS.

We came out with a victory on the road against a really tough team,” Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said. “It was a hard-fought win. Proud of the players, but that’s the only thing that means (anything) today.

I mean first place, you don’t get any prizes for first place there nine games into the season.”

With two touchdown catches on the afternoon, Calvin Johnson set the Detroit franchise touchdown record with 63 for his career.

To be part of history for the Lions, that’s a big deal,” Johnson said.

Chicago’s Jay Cutler returned to action for the first time since suffering a groin injury last month and was hobbled by an ankle injury in the second quarter that seemed to worsen as the game went on.

Cutler suffered the ankle injury on the same leg as his groin injury which caused him to play in a great deal of pain throughout the game.

It held up OK. It’s all the same leg so I think I think that was the problem,” said Cutler, referring to the groin and ankle injuries. “But with the groin, you take the ankle out of the equation and I would have been fine, I think.”

Chicago head coach Marc Trestman finally decided to pull Cutler in favor of Josh McCown before the Bears final drive.

I didn’t want to take him out unless he felt he couldn’t do the job.” Trestman said. “It was, I thought, a very courageous performance throughout. Then at the end I took him out because I knew he would have to run around in the two-minute drill and that’s when we decided to put Josh in the game.”

McCown responded by leading the Bears downfield, throwing an 11-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Marshall with 40 seconds left.

It all came down to a two-point conversion for the Bears to tie the game and possibly send it to overtime. The initial conversion failed but thanks to a roughing penalty, Chicago had another chance to tie.

The Bears went for a rushing attempt with Matt Forte, but the Lions’ Nick Fairley swallowed up Forte in the backfield to preserve the Detroit victory.

I just figured it would be run or a play-action pass,” Fairley said. “I just scouted out the ball real good and was just happy I made the play.”

Matthew Stafford ended the afternoon 18 for 35 for 219 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.
