Edwards fights rain to win at Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. – After two rain delays lasting greater than 5 hours, a slick race monitor wasn't going to cease Carl Edwards from celebrating his first win of the season.

He pulled his car to the start/end line at Bristol Motor Speedway, climbed out to his window ledge and prepared for his celebratory backflip.

Then, Edwards had a brief second of clarity.

"Oh, man, I thought, `That is stupid. I should not do this.. It is awfully shiny. It is perhaps slick,' " he said. "I did not need to stick it completely and have my toes go that way and break my arm on the concrete. That would have been horrible. I used to be really really nervous about that."

But on this rain-soaked Sunday night, Edwards was going for the massive finish to a different lengthy day for NASCAR.

The start was delayed by nearly two hours, racing began and the sector obtained to Lap 124 earlier than the sky opened once more, and the race was stropped for an additional 3 hours, 18 minutes.

Much like the season-opening Daytona 500, which was stopped by rain for nearly six hours, the specter of more dangerous weather bringing a sudden halt to the race pressured the drivers to go onerous every single lap.

So when a warning with 77 laps remaining sent a lot of the field to pit street, Edwards' crew chief, Jimmy Fennig, made the decision to depart his driver on the track. The move gave Edwards the lead on the restart with 70 laps remaining.

"I believed when Jimmy stated we'll stay out, I thought, `Nicely, that is a good idea,' " Edwards stated. "After which no person stayed out round us, and I believed, `Oh boy, which may not be the best factor.' It turned out to be perfect."

He had no hassle pulling out to a simple lead and had victory in sight when the yellow caution lights got here out right earlier than the scheduled white flag lap. No one was sure what the warning was for and Fennig even wondered if water injury might need inadvertently prompted the lights to turn on.

Then the sky suddenly opened and NASCAR had no alternative however to declare the race over.

NASCAR said after the race that someone within the flag stand accidentally leaned on a switch to set off the lights. NASCAR was pressured to challenge a full caution "as a result of operation of the lights was comprised."

"No hurt, no foul, let's act like it simply did not occur," Edwards told NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton.

Edwards led Roush Fenway Racing teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. across the end line. Aric Almirola from Richard Petty Motorsports was third as Ford drivers swept the highest three spots – one day after a Ford workforce received the Twelve Hours of Sebring sports automotive race for the primary time since 1969.

It was Edwards' twenty second career victory, third at Bristol, but first of the season – and the one that ought to clinch him a spot in the Chase for the Dash Cup championship beneath NASCAR's new qualifying format.

"We're within the Chase and we're going to go win this championship," stated Edwards.

Kevin Harvick

It was an eventful day for Kevin Harvick, whose day ended with a fireplace. He finished 39th.

Stenhouse was disappointed he did not get a shot to race his teammate for the win.

"I was pondering that I might use the bumper if the chance was there," he stated. "In the event you get the win, you're within the Chase and you'll let the remainder handle itself later. That's what I was actually thinking if we went back green. I used to be enthusiastic about doing no matter I could to win."

And Almirola also was having trouble accepting the ultimate final result.

"It is frustrating because I had one shot to race Carl for the lead, and these races are so onerous to win," he mentioned. "It was a terrific day for us, I'm not dissatisfied at all with third, however if you see it and you'll style it and it is that shut, you surprise what might have went totally different."

Tony Stewart salvaged a horrific begin to the weekend – he certified thirty seventh – by finishing a season-best fourth.

"I am fairly enthusiastic about that," Stewart said. "All people just labored exhausting all weekend. We had an extended way to go from Friday, when we weren't excellent and day by day we simply bought higher and higher. So, I'm actually pleased with this workforce."

Marcos Ambrose was fifth as each of RPM's drivers finished inside the highest five.

Polesitter Denny Hamlin was sixth in the highest-finishing Toyota and was adopted by Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne. Brian Vickers was ninth and rookie Kyle Larson rounded out the highest 10.

Journeyman Yves Edwards, a 63-fight veteran, isn’t stopping anytime soon (Yahoo Sports)

Yves Edwards' career MMA document: 42-20-1. (Photograph credit score: USA Right now) The UFC will reach its 20th anniversary subsequent week with a significant pay-per-view card as well as a sequence of events devoted to celebrating its historical past and the individuals who helped shape the game.

A type of who played a major role, not only in the history of the UFC but of combined martial arts on the whole, will likely be largely missed during those festivities.

Yves Edwards is an MMA lifer who's believed to be the one fighter to have competed in the UFC, Delight, Strikeforce, World Extreme Cagefighting and Bellator.

He'll face Yancy Medeiros in Fort Campbell, Ky., Wednesday within the UFC's annual Fight for the Troops card, which will be his 64th professional battle. He is 37, however is nowhere near the top of his profession and is going to plow forward no matter what occurs against Medeiros.

MMA is his life and his life is MMA.

"I'm probably not certain how one can describe it, however it's been a enjoyable ride, despite the fact that there have been some really, really bad instances," Edwards stated of his profession, which is now in its seventeenth yr. "There have been occasions when I've cried and I believed that was it, but then all the [wins] wash that away. Yves Edwards (right) takes the again of Issac Vallie-Flagg. (USA Immediately)

"Besides my family, this is virtually all the pieces to me. Everyone I know, all of my buddies are pals due to combating. When you're not a blood relative or a buddy of my spouse's, I do not know anybody, who shouldn't be linked to combating. Everybody in my life, man, I've met a lot of people, some who are dear, close friends, and others I wouldn't want to see once more, however they've made my life what it is."

A protracted, lean light-weight, Edwards has such a ardour for combating that early in his profession, he would deliver his fight gear with him just when he was going to watch a present that he was not scheduled to be on.

In those days, MMA was largely unregulated by the states and promoters weren't burdened by fee guidelines. There was no such factor as weight classes and there have been no security necessities.

A number of occasions, he'd take fights just because he had his gear and was willing to take action, though they hadn't been scheduled. Someone would have second thoughts and pull out and Edwards would eagerly volunteer to switch them.

One evening, Edwards was scheduled to struggle in Dallas, and he was looking ahead to the bout. However his hero, former UFC heavyweight champion Bas Rutten, was going to make an look at an occasion in Houston.

That created a conundrum for him. Edwards didn't need to give up his battle, but neither did he need to cross up the prospect to fulfill his hero.

"I wanted to fulfill Bas so unhealthy, and the money for that combat in Dallas wasn't that great, and so I called up and informed the promoter, 'I am not feeling that nice and I'm not able to battle,' " Edwards stated.

So, he packed his battle gear and made the journey to Houston, the place he obtained the possibility to fulfill Rutten, who's now one in every of his pricey associates.

Nevertheless it seems, he did not lose the possibility to battle that night time, both.

"I confirmed up to the place in Houston the place the fights were and the only man whose opponent did not show up was this jacked, 220-pound-plus guy," Edwards said. "They were on the lookout for anyone to combat him and I had my stuff and I said, 'I will fight him.' It was a chance to combat in front of Bas Rutten. Are you kidding me, I would get a chance to combat in entrance of my hero? After all I was taking that combat."

It turned out nicely for Edwards. The big man wasn't a good fighter, and didn't know the way to take care of leg kicks. Edwards beat him easily, but what felt one of the best wasn't the win. He gained in entrance of his idol.

Yves Edwards (L) lands a punch to the face of Daron Cruickshank. (USA Right this moment) They've since turn out to be close pals and Edwards said that is how his profession has gone.

"I'll fight as long as I can as a result of I just love this a lot, but these relationships I made in this sport are going to last much longer than I can battle," he mentioned. "In what other sport might you just meet a legend like Bas Rutten and turn out to be associates like that?

"He's taught me a whole lot of issues alongside the way in which. It has been incredible, and I might call him up and inform him I am in [Los Angeles] and he'd be out to pick me up at the airport."

When Edwards began in MMA, he had zero wrestling expertise. MMA is now dominated by wrestlers and six of the eight male UFC champions have wrestling backgrounds.

Edwards obtained by in his early years, however quickly sufficient, as the sport developed and fighters might earn a living from it, his lack of wrestling uncovered him.

He debuted for MMA's flagship promotion at UFC 33, the first show in Las Vegas in 2001. Between UFC 33 and UFC sixty one, he fought for the promotion 10 occasions. Increasingly, wrestlers were flowing into the sport and Edwards knew nothing about it.

After he fought Joe Stevenson at UFC 61, Edwards knew he needed to make some substantive adjustments to his recreation as a way to survive.

"Joe Stevenson uncovered my complete lack of wrestling," Edwards stated. "At the time, I couldn't wrestle in any respect. I knew how you can sprawl, and I knew what a double-leg [takedown] was. I could not do something past that when it got here to wrestling.

"Wrestling has always been a part of the game, but that combat came at a time when there was an influx of fine college-stage wrestlers into the sport. The game was altering and I wasn't changing with it. I could not defend Joe Stevenson's takedowns. Imagine if that were [former faculty wrestling stars] Frankie Edgar or Gray Maynard. I might have run into some severe, serious issues."

But Edwards was able to diversify his recreation and work his way back to the UFC. He's forty two-20-1 general and 10-eight in his UFC career. Yves Edwards (R) lands a straight left on Issac Vallie-Flagg. (USA At this time)

He is made himself a better fighter and beloved each minute of it. And though he is had his share of huge moments, he is still chasing that one defining moment he'll keep in mind the remainder of his life.

"Maybe why I'm nonetheless going is that I haven't had that moment but," he said. "The best moment I've had in my profession so far was in my second battle with Hermes Franca. He had a guillotine on me and man, it was locked in. I mean, it was tight.

"I do not know what it was, however I had this thought that came visiting me. I said to myself, 'You realize what? At this level, I am both going to sleep or I'll discover a strategy to get out of it, but I am not tapping.' I used to be by no means in a submission that tight before, however I managed to struggle out of it."

The highs that include doing something like that maintain him going. He's on a two-struggle dropping streak, however says he is not worried about getting minimize if he loses. He'll combat on, someplace, as a result of his historical past has confirmed that, however he'd want it to be within the UFC.

He'll combat his battle in opposition to Medeiros and the result, he mentioned, might be what it is.

"I don't play fantasy soccer as a result of I can decide all these great guys, however I've zero management over what occurs on the sphere," Edwards stated. "It is why I do not guess on soccer or on baseball. I have no control of what occurs.

"That is why I don't fear about getting lower. It is out of my control. I could win this battle and still get released. Maybe I get a traffic ticket after the fight and so they're mad and they could lower me. The only factor I fear about are the issues which are in my control, like my preparation and my effort and my perspective. That is why I don't fear about anything."

He's 37, and is aware of the top of his profession will come in the end. However when the top comes, it's not going to spell the end of his affiliation with MMA.

He'll run a gym or coach fighters or do one thing to remain involved in a sport that has meant every thing to him.

"I can't even think about what my life could be without this sport," he stated. "My mates, everything I've, it is due to MMA. I'll be with it forever."

Receiver Braylon Edwards released by New York Jets

(USA At the moment Sports Photos)

Braylon Edwards’ profession with the New York Jets – and presumably the NFL – has come to an finish.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”20″]

Edwards was released by the workforce a day before groups were required to chop down their roster from 90 to seventy five gamers. Groups usually launch gamers early to present athletes a chance to land a job with another person in free agency. Time will inform if one other staff provides Edwards a chance.

The release doesn’t come as an enormous shock.

Edwards missed observe final week due to a leg injury. He was buried behind Jeremy Kerley, Stephen Hill and Clyde Gates on New York’s depth charts, and was taking part in later in video games with second and third-string gamers. When the Jets signed Mohamed Massaquoi this previous week, and Holmes was moved from the physically unable to perform listing to New York’s active roster, Edwards’ destiny was sealed.

New York re-signed Edwards final month as a result of Santonio Holmes was recovering from a surgically repaired foot. Edwards and Mark Sanchez had chemistry in the past, but is clearly different from the participant who entered the league as a primary-spherical choose (third total) with Cleveland in 2005.

Edwards has compiled 359 receptions for 5,522 yards and 40 touchdowns during nine NFL seasons. He was a Pro Bowler in 2007 after amassing 1,289 receiving yards and sixteen touchdowns for the Browns, but it surely was the only 12 months Edwards has over 1,000 receiving yards in his profession.

Fantasy Trade Spin: Matt Garza to the Rangers for Mike Olt, CJ Edwards, others

Matt Garza, on the move (Getty Images)

Matt Garza has been the subject of trade speculation for months, so nobody can claim to have been blindsided by Monday’s news: Garza has finally been dealt to the Rangers in exchange for a package of prospects.

Chicago will receive Triple-A third baseman Mike Olt, starter Justin Grimm, Single-A right-hander C.J. Edwards, plus a player to be named later. Yahoo!’s Jeff Passan and Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal were all over this deal on Monday, and various others have doggedly tracked this thing through the rumor stage.

Without question, Garza is a nice boost for a Texas rotation swimming in injuries. The Rangers have been forced to rely on Grimm and Josh Lindblom for a combined 22 starts this season, yet they still only trail the division-leading A’s by three games. We don’t have the usual N.L.-to-A.L. fears with Garza, because he’s already been a successful starter in the junior circuit over multiple seasons. He gave us three useful fantasy campaigns with the Rays not so long ago…

2008 – 30 GS, 184.2 IP, 128 Ks, 3.70 ERA, 1.24 WHIP
2009 – 32 GS, 203.0 IP, 189 Ks, 3.95 ERA, 1.26 WHIP
2010 – 32 GS, 204.2 IP, 150 Ks, 3.91 ERA, 1.25 WHIP

…and, at age 29, he’s pitching as well as ever.

Obviously Texas in mid-summer isn’t the friendliest environment, but Garza has won his last five starts for the Cubs (no small achievement), and he hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any game since June 11. It seems reasonable to expect good-not-great ratios the rest of the way from Garza — think 3.96 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 7.3 K/9 — and a decent win total. Go chase him, A.L.-only owners. It may not get much better than this at the deadline.

Mike Olt (Getty) Chicago received a respectable prospect haul, as the team dealt two-and-a-half months of Garza for a handful of notable maybes. Olt, 24, is perhaps the most familiar name in fantasy circles, because he made a cameo appearance in the big leagues last season. He entered 2013 ranked by Baseball America as the game’s No. 22 overall prospect, second only to Jurickson Profar in Texas’ system. However, after having a terrific year in the Texas League in 2012 (28 HR,288/.398/.579), Olt has struggled at Triple-A Round Rock. He’s hitting just213/.317/.422 with 11 homers and 89 Ks, although his difficulties can be partially attributed to an eye disorder for which he’s received treatment.

Olt has also been taking tips from Manny Ramirez, and he’s homered in three of his last five games. The kid remains a legit prospect at a talent-scarce roster spot. If he puts together a few solid weeks, we’ll see him in a Cubs uniform this season. Consider him a lottery ticket in the power cat’s, certainly worth a bid in N.L.-only.

Edwards, 21, is having a phenomenal year in the Sally League — 8-2, 1.83 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 122 Ks in 93.1 IP — and he hasn’t allowed a home run in any of his 18 starts, an impressive feat at any level. And apparently he has giant hands, if you’re into that sort of thing. Grimm has been lit up in the majors this season (6.37 ERA, 1.65 WHIP), and Triple-A hasn’t been a picnic for him, either (career 4.29 ERA, 1.32 WHIP). His ceiling is probably No. 3 or 4 starter. Classic Cub, basically.

No need to declare a winner or loser in this deal, as it seems like a reasonable move on both sides. Texas upgraded its big league rotation, with the division flag within reach. Chicago enhanced an already well-stocked farm system (Baez, Almora, Soler, Bryant, et al). Well done, by both teams — a model for our future fantasy dealings.

You may now return to your Ryan Braun freakout, already in progress…
