MORE: FA system: placement players | FA system: pitchers
This has been a new busy offseason for the particular Yankees but a quiet one for Derek Jeter. The team's chief missed all but 17 activities of the 2013 period due to various leg accidental injuries, and he has spent the particular winter rehabbing and preparing for the 2014 campaign.

Regarding course, the Yankees experience much bigger things happening. Rather than discussing his / her rehabilitate, Jeter answered queries regarding Alex Rodriguez in addition to his capture 162-game suspension during a good cause event inside Tampa upon Wednesday. Here's what he had to say:

At Tamp a charitable organization event, #Yankees Jeter claims he is "saddened by total situation" w/A-Rod and that it's been "messy" but not much altogether different— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) January of sixteen, 2014

Jeter and A-Rod usually seemed to have a new relationship which is.. complicated. These people appear to have a good working relationship on typically the domain but have reportedly kept their particular distance right behind the scenes. There's nothing wrong with that; not everyone about a workforce is best friends. Nevertheless when most likely talking concerning Jeter and A-Rod, it can a big deal. Anyway, dialling the situation "messy" is the tiefstapelei associated with the year.

Oh, and just for your record, Jeter did suggest Topkin he is usually feeling okay and will begin baseball exercises about Monday.

Yankees: We want Cano, but not at $300M

NEW YORK – Another shot of actuality potion, on the rocks, is what New York Yankees president Randy Levine has ordered for the representatives of Robinson Cano as agent Jay Z and his crew are reportedly holding quick to their demand of a 10-yr contract worth $310 million.

“We want Robbie again; we expect Robbie is terrific,” Levine mentioned Tuesday in a telephone conversation with ESPNNewYork.com. “However we have no real interest in doing any 10-12 months deals and little interest in paying $300 million to any participant. Till he will get a bit more sensible, now we have nothing to talk about.”

Levine We would like Robbie again; we think Robbie is terrific. But we have now no interest in doing any 10-12 months deals and no real interest in paying $300 million to any participant. Until he gets somewhat more sensible, we have nothing to talk about.

- Randy Levine, Yankees president

On Monday, ESPNNewYork.com reported that Cano’s agents, Brodie Van Wagenen of CAA and hip-hip mogul Jay Z, had been holding agency to their demand that Cano receive the richest contract in baseball history, surpassing the ten-year, $275 million deal – with one other potential $30 million in performance bonuses – that the Yankees gave to Alex Rodriguez after he opted out of his present contract following the 2007 season.

Levine’s comments come on the heels of Jay Z meeting with New York Mets brass. The New York Post reported, and ESPN.com confirmed, that Jay Z met with chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon, general supervisor Sandy Alderson and assistant GM John Ricco for dinner Monday night time to discuss the free agent.

A source informed ESPN.com that the Mets were shocked the meeting leaked to the media so fast and perceive that their curiosity may very well be leveraged to drive up Cano’s asking worth.

Levine’s response echoed the phrases of Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner, who said in October that the Yankees have been “not prepared” to signal Cano to a 10-yr deal.

Cano’s brokers seek to market him as “the next Michael Jordan,” in accordance with a New York Day by day News report, citing unnamed sources.

The back and forth is also harking back to the 2010 contract negotiations with Derek Jeter, which turned ugly when a crew official famously advised the Yankees captain to “drink the reality potion” after his brokers reportedly demanded a four-12 months deal worth between $23 million and $25 million a season.

Jeter finally signed a three-yr deal price $fifty one million, and he not too long ago was given a one-year deal that may pay him $12 million for the 2014 season.

The Yankees have already made a proposal to Cano, believed to be within the space of between five and 7 years for around $160 million, a median of roughly $23 million a yr.

Levine was reached early Tuesday at his Manhattan office. He was to testify later within the day within the Rodriguez arbitration hearing.

“Signing Robbie is a precedence for us,” mentioned Levine, who said Yankees GM Brian Cashman was additionally “engaged” in discussions with “5 – 6 other free agents,” together with infielders Jhonny Peralta and Stephen Drew, both of whom could fill in for Cano at second base, in addition to outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Shin-Soo Choo and catcher Brian McCann.

Sources additionally say they are in on Carlos Beltran.

“We’re very energetic,” Levine said. “But whoever we signal has got to make sense for us. We made Robbie a very aggressive offer.”

Cano’s representatives did not immediately return a call in search of comment.

Jeter deal leaves Yanks about $80M before tax (Yahoo Sports)

jeter,leaves,yanks,about,before,yahoo,sports

NEW YORK (AP) – Derek Jeter’s new contract has increased the Yankees’ luxury tax payroll to $97.71 million for seven signed players next year. That leaves New York with about $80 million to spend on the rest of its roster if the team wants to get under the 2014 tax threshold.

Jeter and New York agreed Friday to a $12 million, one-year contract. Major League Baseball determined its value for purposes of the luxury tax is $12.81 million.

The Yankees’ captain, injured for most of this year, was playing under a three-year contract with a player option for 2014 that wound up being worth $9.5 million and was replaced by the new salary.

Baseball’s luxury tax uses the average annual values of contracts as defined by the sport’s collective bargaining agreement. Determining Jeter’s payroll figure for the tax is complicated by the option and the new salary, and New York may contest his 2014 evaluation.

The Yankees want to re-sign free agents Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson and Hiroki Kuroda, and need to fill roster holes after missing the playoffs for just the second time in 19 years. The team figures to be interested in free-agent pitchers and catcher Brian McCann.

Managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner has said getting under the $189 million tax threshold for 2014 is a hope but is not essential.

”It’s a goal that we have if it’s possible,” general manager Brian Cashman said last month. ”There’s a lot of benefits to staying under that, but it’s not a mandate if it’s at the expense of a championship run. It just depends on what the opportunities are before us, and the costs associated with it.”

New York’s other signed players are Alex Rodriguez ($27.5 million), CC Sabathia ($24.4 million), Mark Teixeira ($22.5 million), Ichiro Suzuki ($6.5 million), Alfonso Soriano ($4 million) and Vernon Wells ($0).

The impacts of Soriano and Wells on New York’s luxury tax payroll were reduced because of cash being paid by their former clubs attributable to 2014. The Yankees will receive $18.6 million from the Los Angeles Angels as part of the acquisition of Wells last March and $13 million from the Chicago Cubs as a result of July’s deal for Soriano.

Rodriguez’s payroll impact for 2014 would drop to $2.5 million if arbitrator Fredric Horowitz upholds a 211-game suspension imposed on the third baseman by MLB for alleged violations of the sport’s drug agreement and labor contract. Rodriguez, who is contesting the discipline, has a $25 million salary for next year, and the Yankees would not have to pay him for any period he is suspended.

Payrolls for the luxury tax include the entire 40-man roster and a 1-30th portion of the cost of benefits and extended benefits for all major leaguers. That category totals items such as health insurance premiums, pension payments, club medical costs and payroll, unemployment and Social Security taxes.

The 2013 figure will not be completed until next month. For 2012, each team’s payroll was assessed $10,779,500.

New York has paid luxury tax for every season since the provision was put in place for 2003, a total of $224.56 million. The Yankees will pay again for 2013, when the threshold was $178 million.

But there are large benefits if the Yankees get under the threshold in 2014. The team’s tax rate would drop from its current 50 percent to 17.5 percent in 2015, and New York would be eligible to get back a portion of its revenue-sharing payments.

Could Matt Garza be wearing pinstripes next season? (USATSI)
Could Matt Garza be wearing pinstripes next season? (USATSI)

The Yankees have been discussing several big-name free agents – including new ones Jacoby Ellsbury, Matt Garza and Stephen Drew – as they weigh the best way to remake their crew.

The Yankees are still aiming to chop their payroll from $230 million to under $189 million, however with several free agents and retirees of their very own, they have many choices. In addition they like Carlos Beltran, Shin-Soo Choo, Brian McCann and Masahiro Tanaka, as beforehand reported.

They remain the favourite to re-sign Robinson Cano, the highest free agent available on the market, however a spot of about $a hundred and fifty million existed between the edges, with Cano on the lookout for $310 million and the Yankees willing to supply $one hundred sixty million or so up to now.

The Yankees’ flexibility comes from all their free brokers and retirees, including Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, Hiroki Kuroda, Curtis Granderson, Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain and naturally Cano. That represents about $eighty million in 2012 contracts.

The interest in Drew is intriguing in that iconic shortstop Derek Jeter is predicted to be again. Jeter has days to resolve whether or not to select up his possibility for $9.5 million, with nothing mentioned to indicate but that he may not achieve this following his harm-plagued 12 months.

“It’s acquired to be what it was like to observe (Joe) DiMaggio’s hitting streak, solely longer,” he stated, impressed by each Rivera’s accomplishments and the ceremony. “They know the best way to do things right here. They’re great at pomp and circumstance in this place.”

After the final out, Rivera remained on the bench for a moment as Frank Sinatra’s recording of “New York, New York” played.

He then took a last walk to the mound, a man alone, rubbing his ft on the rubber, kneeling and gathering a bit of his workplace as a souvenir.

“I wanted to get some dust, simply stay there for the last time, realizing that I ain’t going to be there no extra, especially pitching,” he said. “Perhaps throw a first pitch one yr, at some point. But competing – won’t be there no extra. So that little that I used to be there was particular for me.”

Rivera had entered with one out and two on within the eighth to a recorded introduction by Bob Sheppard, the longtime Yankees public handle announcer who died three years in the past.

“I’ll be there for the fans. They deserve it,” the 43-year-outdated said. “But it do not imply anything. I am not used to pitching for something that doesn’t mean anything. I needed to pitch for one thing that means something.

“It’s disappointing. Can’t do anything about it now. It’s carried out. It is disappointing. We fought onerous the entire yr and we fell brief.”

Phil Hughes (four-14) allowed three runs and 7 hits in two innings-plus Wednesday night, strolling slowly to the dugout and searching up to the stands when he was removed from what doubtless was his final begin with the Yankees.

“Just a robust approach to end issues right here – not making the postseason,” Hughes mentioned.

A key part of the Yankees’ 2009 title group as a reliever, Hughes went 0-7 with a 6.09 ERA in thirteen begins since beating Minnesota on July 2. He is eligible without spending a dime company after the World Collection.

“Plenty of good times. Lots of dangerous times, I guess,” he said. “That is the best way life is sometimes.”

Joba Chamberlain, additionally eligible free of charge company, didn’t even await mathematical elimination to organize for his departure. Before batting practice, he began placing his locker belongings into a large box.

New York started the season 30-18 and was in first place on the morning of Could 26, but the solid begin was not sufficient to beat accidents to four All-Star regulars: shortstop Derek Jeter, third baseman Alex Rodriguez, first baseman Mark Teixeira and center fielder Curtis Granderson.

Hobbled by the ankle he broke in final yr’s AL Championship Series opener, Jeter did not make his season debut till proper earlier than the All-Star break and wound up playing simply 17 video games due to recurring leg injuries.

Bobby Valentine badmouths Yankees on 9/11 anniversary

(Getty)

Contradicting himself by saying “This isn’t about credit score,” former New York Mets manager Bobby Valentine complained Wednesday that the New York Yankees obtained an excessive amount of credit score in the wake of the sept. 11 assaults on the city that each teams share.

Talking to WFAN radio on the attacks’ twelfth anniversary, Valentine understandably was emotional in detailing events as he remembered them in the days after the World Trade Center was destroyed, the United States was shaken and Major League Baseball season was placed on pause. After giving some touching remarks about these horrible and awkward times, Valentine took a left turn and slapped down the Yankees. And a few of Valentine’s info seem out of whack as they pertain to how sept. 11 should be remembered. Via CBS in New York:

“Let it’s mentioned that during the time from sept. 11 to 9/21, the Yankees have been (not around),” Valentine advised Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts on Wednesday. “You couldn’t find a Yankee on the streets of New York Metropolis. You couldn’t discover a Yankee down at Floor Zero, speaking to the blokes who had been working 24/7.”

He added: “A lot of them didn’t live right here, and so it wasn’t their fault. And lots of of them did not partake in all that, so there was a few of that jealousy going around. Like, ‘Why are we so tired? Why are we wasted? Why have we been to the funerals and the firehouses, and the Yankees are getting all of the credit for bringing baseball back?’ And I stated ‘This isn’t about credit, guys. That is about doing the right thing.’”

Bernie Williams visits with survivors at St. Vincent’s Hospital on Sept. 15, 2011 (AP) Oh, really? Has Valentine lost his thoughts? Now that he’s the director of athletics at Sacred Coronary heart University in Fairfield, Conn., he appears to be getting foggy within the head.

As the very subsequent paragraph of the CBS publish says, “Members of the Yankees, together with Bernie Williams, Derek Jeter and manager Joe Torre, visited rescue staging areas on the Jacob Javits Middle, the Armory and St. Vincent’s Hospital 5 days after the assaults.”

Update: Yankees president Randy Levine called Valentine’s comments “sad.”

It’s true that most of the public’s post-sep 11 reminiscences, as they relate to baseball, involve the Yankees. Largely, that’s because they performed in the World Sequence.

But how can Valentine suppose we didn’t know, or forgot, how the Mets lent a hand at Shea Stadium, which was used as a staging area for rescue, cleanup and rebuilding efforts. Or how the gamers, led by Robin Ventura, Valentine also recalled, began sporting NYPD and FDNY caps? Or how the Mike Piazza home run sport at Shea, reintroduced MLB in New York when so many individuals needed one thing else to worry about?

Who — as MLB remembers sept. 11 at ballgames throughout the nation Wednesday — who might overlook in regards to the Mets in September 2001?

People keep in mind what the Mets did, Bobby. We additionally remember what the Yankees did. Not that it is about credit score.

Derek Jeter’s season is over, as Yankees put him on disabled list again — what about his career?

(USA Immediately)

Well,

Derek Jeter

has virtually as many disabled record trips this season as he does RBIs.

The Yankees put Jeter on the disabled record again Wednesday, the fourth time this yr, and the ultimate one — this will end his season. Jeter’s been hobbled since breaking an ankle in final yr’s playoffs. First, there was the setback in spring training. Then the setback in mid-April.

Jeter returned in July, then obtained damage once more in his first sport back. He’s handled quite a lot of leg-related points since then — a quad, a calf and now the ankle again. He was pulled from Saturday’s recreation after feeling soreness in his surgically repaired ankle, and he hasn’t played since. This was the foreseeable end to a irritating season for the Yankees Captain. Between all of the DL journeys, Jeter performed in 17 video games with 12 hits and a190 batting average. He hit one homer and knocked in seven runs.

The Yankees acquired Brendan Ryan from the Mariners on Tuesday, as Jeter “insurance coverage.” However now he is more than that. Ryan cannot be added to the postseason roster, nevertheless, ought to the Yankees make it. Basic supervisor Brian Cashman mentioned Wednesday Jeter wouldn’t return for the playoffs either. Right now, they’re two games back in the AL Wild Card standings.

The bigger question as it pertains to Jeter is whether that is the end of his season, or just the tip. He’ll be 40 next June, and while this is not the best way his Corridor of Fame career ought to finish, it might be his body making the choice for him.

Mark Feinsand of the New York Each day Information wrote in Tuesday’s newspaper that when Jeter decides it’s time to retire, he is not possible to give us a farewell tour and a season’s discover like Mariano Rivera. But Feinsand did not think — before Wednesday’s news, mind you — that Jeter was ready.

The only thing that could potentially cloud Jeter’s future is his contract, which expires this season however accommodates a $9.5 million participant option.

Many contained in the business believe Jeter nonetheless has animosity toward the Yankees for the way the negotiations went down three years ago, so he’ll decline the choice and pressure the Yankees to give him a brand new deal.

A good friend of Jeter’s just lately advised me he thinks the Captain will exercise the choice, returning with a way of function subsequent season. Public sentiment was largely with Jeter last time, however that in all probability wouldn’t be the case if he engaged the Yankees in a combat. Besides, what workforce is offering a 39-yr-outdated shortstop more than $9.5 million anyway?

General manager Brian Cashman advised reporters on Wednesday: “I have not seen Derek Jeter play his final recreation. Nobody has.” Jeter then addressed the media and mentioned he didn’t imagine his career is over.

Despite what Jeter and Cashman say, this may not be the final time reporters are asking questions about Jeter’s future between now and subsequent season, you possibly can wager on that.

How the Yankees set nearly $100 million on fire with injured players and the luxury tax

(BLS Illustration)

If you drive a Ferrari, then spending $seventy five if you fill up on the gasoline station isn’t as eye-popping as it to an everyday person. It’s a part of the show. And once you’re the

New York Yankees

, the most invaluable sports activities franchise in America, having a season where you are charged a $29 million luxurious tax comes with the very, very excessive-priced turf.

The $29 million figure, greater than the Houston Astros’ whole payroll, is being reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today and it represents a 50 p.c tax for the Yanks being over the $178 million payroll threshold. The Yankees payroll this season is $236.2 million, so that they’re paying 50 p.c of the difference. Wow. Even in the event you’re a Ferrari proprietor, that is a lot of money.

But for these 2013 Yankees, with their getting old stars and a number of disabled-listing journeys, that is just the start of the cash that’s being wasted. Take into account that they are paying Alex Rodriguez $28 million and he’s played in 31 video games (and counting). Mark Teixeira, along with his $22.5 million contract, played in 15 games before his season ended with injury.

The Yankees got 28 video games out of Kevin Youkilis, who signed a $13 million contract within the offseason. Outfielder Curtis Granderson has played in 44 video games of a season in which he’s getting paid $15 million. Then there’s The Captain, Derek Jeter. He is played in 17 video games. His salary is $thirteen million. And as of Wednesday, he’s achieved for the season.

So how much money have the Yankees misplaced to injury this season? Right now, that determine is at $75.four million. Add the luxurious tax invoice and it totals $104.5 million

There’s another $four.5 million still on the table with 17 video games left for A-Rod and Granderson. Will each of them play every recreation? With A-Rod a bit beat up recently, the Yankees will, most likely, eat slightly bit more cash.

But before anyone tsk-tsk’s the Yankees an excessive amount of, we have now to note some of this will be coming back to them by way of insurance insurance policies. It’s been reported that insurance coverage will cover nearly $19 million of Teixeira’s wage. His case is somewhat totally different because he was injured in preparation for the World Baseball Traditional, and a particular MLB insurance coverage policy will cowl $7 million.

We know the Yankees have insurance coverage policies on A-Rod, though since he made it again from harm this year, we do not know what’s lined exactly. And if the Yankees took out policies out for A-Rod and Teixeira, it is a pretty good wager that they insured the rest of their massive contracts, Jeter and Youkilis particularly.

So we won’t say exactly how a lot money the Yankees are just throwing right into a bonfire this season, however two things we all know for certain: It’s a complete heck of much more than you and I have within the bank. And it will probably purchase Ferraris in your entire household.

Dan Straily pitched solely 5 innings for the A’s, however acquired the win whereas giving up three hits and two runs. The Oakland bullpen gave up five hits, however didn’t let one other Ranger run cross the plate.

The A’s picked up the win here after sweeping another playoff hopeful, the Tampa Bay Rays, over the weekend and taking three of four from the Detroit Tigers final week. It’s a nice turnaround for a staff that faltered in August, going 14-13 for the month, a mark that will have appeared much worse had it not won five of six video games to complete the month. Only a month ago, on Aug. 3, the A’s had a 3 half of game lead on the Rangers in the AL West.

PIRATES RETAKE NL CENTRAL LEAD: It’s Sept. 3 and the Pittsburgh Pirates are all alone atop the NL Central, just two wins away from clinching their first winning season in 20 years.

On Sunday, the Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2. That mixed with — spoiler alert — a St. Louis Cardinals loss, broke the primary-place tie within the NL Central. Pittsburgh acquired a huge three-run homer from Neil Walker in the seventh inning, which turned a 2-1 game right into a 5-1 sport. The Pirates received seven innings of two-run ball from beginning pitcher Charlie Morton.

Phillies three, Nats 2: The Phillies get two in the bottom of the eighth — a Jimmy Rollins RBI double and a Carlos Ruiz RBI single being the clutch moments — to high the Nats.

Blue Jays 4, D-backs 1: Esmil Rogers pitches 6 1/three innings of 1-hit ball for Toronto.

Orioles 7, Indians 2: Bud Norris pitches seven innings, giving up just one run and 4 hits. He is now four-0 since being traded to Baltimore.

”That was actually a troublesome one; it actually damage. It was like a stab within the coronary heart.”

(USA As we speak)

No, Derek Jeter did not immediately go on the disabled record after this play.

• Indians ace Justin Masterson left Monday’s sport in the second inning with tightness in his aspect. He’ll get an MRI on Tuesday.

• This season, Freddie Freeman has hit349 with five homers and sixteen RBIs towards the Mets.

• Outfielder Sam Fuld pitched to a batter for the Rays of their loss to the Angels. He received J.B. Shuck to fly out for the Angels’ final out of the sport.

Derek Jeter’s back (again) and the Yankees are almost the Yankees

(Getty Photographs)

Derek Jeter, the hobbled Captain of the New York Yankees, makes his return to the lineup on Monday. Again. For the third time. It is solely Jeter’s sixth sport this season, between these three disabled listing trips

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”19″]

And while you may make all the “how long earlier than he gets damage once more?” jokes you want, probably the most attention-grabbing part of Jeter’s return is that we’re the closest we’ve been all year to seeing the 2013 Yankees as they were supposed.

Jeter’s hitting second and enjoying shortstop, whereas A-Rod is sharing that half of the diamond with him, enjoying third and hitting sixth. Curtis Granderson is in the lineup too, as is Robinson Cano. All that is lacking, really, is first baseman Mark Teixeira, who is out for the 12 months with injury. Recent acquisition Alfonso Soriano plays the a part of new-man-we’re-pretty-acquainted-with, which was the injured Kevin Youkilis’ role earlier within the yr.

In the case of A-Rod and Jeter, it will be their first time playing together for the reason that 2012 postseason, which was not a fun time for either gent. That’s when Jeter broke the ankle that started him on the frequent-disabled-checklist program. A-Rod, in the meantime, was benched for his lackluster performance.

Will their luck be any different this time around? Nicely, it may well’t get much worse. Unless Jeter breaks one other ankle and Bud Selig marches onto the sphere and drags A-Rod away by his ear.

The Yankees, for as damage-jinxed and drama-filled as they’ve been this season, are still legit wild card contenders. They’re solely three-and-a-half video games behind the Oakland Athletics for a playoff spot.

Could having (most of) their nucleus again give the Yankees the push they need? Solely time will inform, however a very good begin could be having Jeter within the lineup for every week straight.

A-Rod’s name removed from Brooklyn store

(USA In the present day) Here’s something new. An A-Rod story that does not instantly contain Biogenesis or his well being, and would not contains comments from legal professionals, the New York Yankees, or even Major League Baseball.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”19″]

Earlier this month, a youth complex in Appleton, WI, where Alex Rodriguez began his minor league baseball career, removed A-Rod’s title from their facility effective instantly after Major League Baseball formally introduced his 211-sport suspension. It makes sense, as a result of actually, who would need their youngsters taking part in on a subject named in A-Rod’s honor after every little thing that is gone on over the past 18 months?

Not many.

Now, take that same thought course of and apply it to grocery shopping. Who would wish to store in a grocery named after A-Rod?

I can inform you how the people of Brooklyn would reply that query. Nobody. Or at the least not the vocal majority, as a result of in response to a New York Day by day Information report, Ricardo Rodriguez’s customers at A-Rod Grocery have given him a lot grief and put so much pressure on him not too long ago, he is had no choice but to vary the name of his retailer.

“I bought uninterested in all these people complaining,” mentioned Rodriguez, who’s no relation to A-Rod, informed the Daily Information.

“Why should I’ve to listen to all of them? It’s not fair. I don’t even know the man.”

Well, sure, I do understand the place Rodriguez is coming from along with his comments. By the identical token, he’s the one who determined to name his store after a professional athlete. He needed to know it wouldn’t all the time be the most well-liked identify, however this is what I discover ironic about the whole scenario. Rodriguez truly named the shop years earlier than A-Rod even joined the Yankees.

From the Daily Information:

A-Rod was the perfect participant in baseball thirteen years in the past when Ricardo Rodriguez modified the title of his bodega from Pena Grocery in honor of the then-Seattle Mariners star.

The Dominican community in Clinton Hill cheered the information.

“When he moved to New York, lots of people bought excited,” Ricardo Rodriguez mentioned. “They thought he owned the place.”

Not a lot. However hey, maybe we’re on to something for A-Rod’s put up baseball life.

Anyway, the following logical question to ask is what is going to Ricardo Rodriguez name his store now that the A-Rod title is coming off the sign. Will he play it protected and return to Pena Grocery? Would he dare go the baseball participant route again and name it after Derek Jeter or possibly even Miguel Cabrera? We don’t have that answer just yet, however regardless of the new name you’ll be able to guess it will go down as essentially the most notable grocery store title change in Brooklyn historical past.

Carlos Gomez and Jose Fernandez budding fantasy stars and a look around the league

Carlos Gomez’s star continues to rise (USAT)

After Carlos Gomez hit278 with 14 homers and 26 stolen bases over 252 at-bats after the All-Star break last season, he entered 2013 as a relatively fashionable sleeper, and if anything, he’s actually exceeded the hype. Gomez is on tempo to finish the season with a line of:305-ninety one-26-80-forty. His 97:18 K:BB ratio isn’t ideal, but Gomez has been successful on eighty five.zero% of his previous 118 SB makes an attempt, which is a remarkable rate, and here are his slugging percentages relationship again from 2009, respectively:337,357,403,463 and557. That’s a development entering into the best course for a 27-yr-previous just now entering his prime who has 17 homers, 23 doubles and an MLB-main nine triples this season, when he’s been the eighth most precious fantasy hitter, according to Baseball Monster. Regardless of an shortened month because of the All-Star break, Gomez has five homers and 10 steals in July. He also continues to play fantastic protection, particularly according to superior metrics (his 32.3 UZR since 2011 ranks fifth-finest in baseball regardless of limited taking part in time. And Dustin Pedroia is the only participant forward of him who performs something apart from a nook spot). Gomez is a creating star who supplies a rare energy/pace combo (he’s presently the one participant in MLB with 15+ homers and 25+ steals) that makes him a prime fantasy performer, and if you additionally factor in his base running and protection, it’s actually not loopy that he has the third-highest WARFARE amongst all gamers this season.

Here’s a compilation of Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus being greatest buddies, although this recent play was no laughing matter.

Can anyone clarify why this wasn’t an infield fly rule?

Here’s Yasiel Puig doing Yasiel Puig issues.

Jose Fernandez entered 2013 as a 20-yr-previous with just 138.1 career minor league innings. His numbers were dominant (2.02 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 4.23 Ok:BB ratio), but it surely made no sense on the floor to start out his arbitration clock on a team clearly rebuilding and amongst those favored to finish with the worst document in baseball. Of course, the apparent counter to that is the Marlins having no intention of rostering someone like Fernandez on their team when things like Super Two standing would matter, so may as properly showcase him now. However most prospects fail when first brought up, even prime ones, not to mention pitchers still unable to drink legally. However Fernandez has exceeded all expectations, as he at the moment sports a 2.71 ERA and 1.04 WHIP whereas recording 124 strikeouts over 119.2 innings. He’s been notably dominant since June began, as he’s posted a 1.87 PERIOD and zero.91 WHIP with seventy two strikeouts over sixty seven.2 innings. Fernandez punched out thirteen batters throughout his last outing, which was the most by an NL proper-hander underneath age 21 since Kerry Wood in 1998. Fernandez has a whopping 94.eight mph common fastball velocity and an 9.four SwStr% combined with a 1.36 GB/FB ratio, so he clearly looks like the actual deal. The only negatives that can be mentioned at this level are that a horrible Marlins staff has hurt him within the wins category, and he’s going to be on an innings limit down the stretch.

Fernandez’s lackluster seven wins are little question disappointing, but he plays for a staff that has scored 50+ fewer runs than the subsequent worst in baseball, and people seven wins are more than: A.J. Burnett, who has four wins with a 2.ninety six PERIOD whereas pitching for a group that leads the NL Wild Card by 4.0 video games; Chris Sale, who has six wins with a decrease PERIOD and has thrown 17.1 extra innings; Cole Hamels, who has four wins with a 129:39 K:BB ratio; Stephen Strasburg, who has five wins with a 2.eighty five ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. Strasburg has allowed two runs or fewer in 15 of his 20 begins this season! Enjoying for a team that was one of many favorites to win the World Series coming into 2013. If that’s not dangerous sufficient, contemplate these two other nominees: Yu Darvish has won two video games since Could 16 despite recording a 2.sixty six PERIOD and 1.13 WHIP with 86 strikeouts over 71.zero innings while taking part in for a crew eight games above500. Matt Harvey has a powerful argument as the very best pitcher in baseball this season (Clayton Kershaw has the best counter, and even he’s on tempo to finish with a modest 15.5 wins on a workforce that tasks to win its division) with a 2.eleven PERIOD, 0.88 WHIP. Harvey leads MLB in FIP (2.05), xFIP (2.fifty eight) and opposing slugging share (.275). Harvey has allowed two runs or fewer in 15 starts this season. He has eight wins.

Here’s crazy footage of passengers surviving a wild landslide in China.

Here’s a FedEx employee recklessly throwing objects into a truck.

This is the Bubble Wrap Bike. “Jealous much?”

So I tried “Popeyes” for the first time just lately (I had always been keen on “Church’s Hen”) and was pretty impressed, albeit not quite as much as this particular person. Still, it was little question legit, and I’m fairly fired up for his or her new waffle battered tenders.

Many (together with myself) anticipated the Blue Jays to be main contenders this season, but they sit 14.5 video games out of first place within the AL East at the finish of July (Many additionally (including myself) predicted the Nationals to make the World Series. And the group that’s gained two of the past three WS can also be a transparent vendor at the trade deadline. The Mariners at the moment have a better report than the Angels. Baseball, as at all times, stays incredibly unpredictable). However back to Toronto, since I wanted to point out simply what number of things have gone flawed for a crew that looked so promising on paper getting into the yr. Jose Bautista has been effective, although his842 OPS is his lowest since 2009, and Edwin Encarnacion has confirmed last year was no fluke (fantasy house owners need to be thrilled with his manufacturing, as he’s on tempo to finish with forty five homers and a hundred thirty RBI regardless of a modest278 BA. He’s additionally walked six more instances than he’s struck out). But after that, it will get ugly: Jose Reyes suffered a grotesque ankle harm, costing him 67 video games; after “winning” the batting title final season, Melky Cabrera is hitting just281/.322/.363. He’s a corner outfielder with three homers playing in Rogers Centre that has the second-highest HR Park Think about main league baseball in 2013; Brett Lawrie, who posted a953 OPS as a 21-12 months-outdated rookie two years ago, at the moment sports activities a207/.273/.391 line (once more, while calling baseball’s second-best hitter’s park dwelling); J.P. Arencibia has a 107:14 K:BB ratio; after being successful on his previous 19-of-21 SB makes an attempt, Maicer Izturis is 0-for-4 since joining Toronto; after successful the Cy Younger award final season, R.A. Dickey has a four.86 PERIOD and 1.30 WHIP whereas experiencing a serious dip in velocity. He hasn’t had a single start with out issuing a stroll, and if Dickey didn’t allow one run over his next 108.zero innings, he’d still end with a better PERIOD this season compared to final; Brandon Morrow has suffered through an harm plagued marketing campaign, posting a 5.sixty three ERA and 1.forty nine WHIP over 54.1 innings; Josh Johnson has won one game over 14 begins and sits with a 6.08 PERIOD and 1.57 WHIP (together with permitting 19 earned runs over his previous 13.2 innings). In case I haven’t been clear, the Blue Jays’ season hasn’t gone fairly as planned.

Over his last 4 begins, Chris Archer has allowed one run over 31.zero innings, resulting in a zero.29 ERA and 0.sixty one WHIP with a 4.three Ok:BB ratio. In actual fact, when you date his latest sizzling stretch back to the beginning of July, he’s 4-0 with a 0.73 PERIOD and 0.65 WHIP over his past five starts. Archer entered the yr No. fifty three on Keith Legislation’s prospect list, however his numbers this season in Triple-A have been hardly overwhelming (three.96 ERA, 1.forty six WHIP, 2.26 Ok:BB ratio). Archer has a 6.25 K/9 rate since joining Tampa Bay, and he at the moment sports activities a216 BABIP (that would easily be an MLB-low if he certified. Nonetheless, this isn’t essentially a deathblow. If you happen to try the league leaders on this category, there’s one thing that actually jumps out. They consist largely of actually good pitchers). Moreover, it’s additionally value stating among the aforementioned 5 starts, four of them got here against opponents ranked in the backside-10 in runs scored in MLB (although to be truthful, a kind of additionally came with no consideration-hander pitching in Yankee Stadium, when he tossed a complete recreation shutout while permitting simply two base runners). Still, there are plenty of positives, as Archer plays for a staff that has a terrific observe document in creating younger pitchers. Tampa Bay additionally gives robust defense, and Tropicana Discipline has turn out to be quite the pitcher’s park. Archer’s Ok rate might not be spectacular, however he has averaged 95.0 mph together with his fastball, which might be third highest among all starters if he certified, and his profession eight.2 SwStr% suggests he’s not a fluke, though clearly it’s in all probability finest to anticipate some regression is in retailer.

Quick Hits: I traded Dan Uggla seemingly right after he acquired new contacts, so it’s been irritating to see him hit eight homers over his last 25 video games. It hasn’t been all good, however, as he’s batting195 over that span, placing out 27 occasions over 87 at-bats. Moreover, he’s scored simply 11 runs over his eight-homer stretch after crossing the plate 86 occasions despite a220/.348/.384 line final season, and he’s also on tempo to document fewer RBI than he did in 2012 despite a 45-point enhance in slugging proportion (he already has two more homers this season in comparison with final in 185 fewer ABs). Uggla’s 32.0 Okay% is the fourth-worst in baseball. Why once more do I personal him in so many fantasy leagues?…With Joe Nathan surprisingly on the trade block, Joakim Soria isn’t a foul stash right now for those trying to find saves. He hadn’t appeared in a recreation since 2011 earlier than this month, but he’s yet to allow a run over 5.2 innings and has exhibited solid enough velocity during his return from Tommy John surgery. Tanner Scheppers seems to be the current in house favorite to replace ninth inning work, but he has a modest 33:17 K:BB ratio over 47.2 innings, whereas Soria has a profession 2.36 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. Nonetheless, I find it arduous to consider Texas would actually transfer Joe Nathan, because it doesn’t make a lot sense…Derek Jeter’s house run Sunday broke a Yankees 28-sport homerless streak by proper-handed batters. In fact, the team hit as many homers by RHB on Sunday (two) as that they had combined since Might 15.

Longread of the Week: Remade in Taiwan: Manny Ramirez’s Season Overseas.

And in the event you happen to additionally play fantasy football (or only a fan of the random links), here’s my first NFL column of the 12 months.

Quick Hits Part Deux: At this point, Jonathan Villar needs to be owned in all but shallow leagues. He had eight homers and 31 steals over 339 at-bats in Triple-A this season, and while that came within the PCL, he’s just 22 years old and plays shortstop. He’s already racked up 193 stolen bases all through his minor league profession. The change-hitter has been handed an everyday job as Houston’s leadoff hitter, and whereas Villar has already struck out an alarming thirteen times over 26 at-bats, he’s also recorded four steals (while getting caught twice) over his first seven video games in the massive leagues, so he’s clearly going to run wild…The A’s have a652 successful proportion in July (which might be the perfect in baseball this season by a large margin. The Cardinals at the moment have the best at602). Oakland has done this regardless of an MLB staff-worst251 BABIP over that span (subsequent lowest is268). Go determine…I wanted to additional bury my Giants by mentioning how they have simply seven home runs in July with a pathetic085 ISO, however the Yankees, who have the benefit of the DH and play in a park that couldn’t be more excessive in favor of hitters compared to San Francisco, have hit just nine house runs and have a087 ISO this month. Wow…More enjoyable with July stats: The Rockies have scored the third fewest runs up to now this month. Put otherwise, their workforce wRC+ is 55. The next lowest is seventy four (Twins)…Logical thought would be anybody leaving Coors Subject would lose fantasy worth, but Eric Young Jr. has been given the opportunity to be an daily participant since joining the Mets (batting leadoff even), and he’s gone from afterthought to precious asset because of this. Clearly, Young isn’t going to supply any power (he has six profession homers over 909 career at-bats), however since joining New York, he’s been on a pace to finish a full season with one zero five runs scored and sixty two steals. That isn’t sustainable, however with 17 walks and 17 SB makes an attempt over 34 video games, it’s clear he’s going to remain a fantasy factor over the remainder of 2013.

Robinson Cano leaves All-Star Game after getting hit on knee by Matt Harvey pitch

NEW YORK — Oh, no. Another New York Yankees star injured? Exactly what they don’t need.

He tried to stay on the field, but slugger Robinson Cano left the All-Star Game in the first inning Tuesday after getting hit with a pitch on the side of the right knee. X-rays showed no break, but an injured right quad was reported by Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal.

Matt Harvey of the New York Mets, the starting pitcher for the National League in his home ballpark of Citi Field, drilled Cano with a fastball after Mike Trout led off the game with a double to right field. The crowd gasped, groaned and seemed to tense up.

Cano seemed to be in obvious discomfort as the trainer looked him over, but he decided to take his base as Miguel Cabrera came to the plate. After Harvey struck out Cabrera, Cano came off the field, through the dugout and into the trainer’s room. There’s no free substitution in MLB’s All-Star Game, so Cano was finished for the evening.

Update: Outside of the American League clubhouse, Cano told reporters, “I’ll be good for Friday.”

Dustin Pedroia of the Red Sox replaced Cano on the bases, and Harvey continued to settle down, retiring Chris Davis on a short fly to center and striking out Jose Bautista to end the first inning.

Matt Harvey told Erin Andrews of Fox Sports that the pitch was an accident.

“I tried to go in, that sometimes happens. I didn’t mean to, obviously … my apologies go out to him.”

The Yankees appear to have dodged a serious problem. They have been without Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson and Kevin Youkilis for most of the season. If the Yankees were to lose Cano for an extended period, they probably could count on falling way behind in the AL East. As of Tuesday, they’re 51-44 and six games behind the Red Sox.

Congratulations to Vernon Wells, who is believed to be the only healthy Yankee! An exaggeration, but only slightly.

Derek Jeter shut down until after All-Star break with quad strain, Yankees announce

The Yankees will shut down Derek Jeter through the All-Star break after he suffered a Grade 1 quad strain on Thursday, his first game of the season after coming back from a broken ankle.

“We’re going to play it safe for the weekend and see what happens,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said at a Friday news conference. “We’re going to evaluate sometime after that.”

Holding Jeter out for the weekend, the Yankees hope, combined with the All-Star break will give their captain enough time to avoid another disabled-list stint. The Yankees return to game action after the break on July 19 at Boston.

(Getty Images) Jeter’s return to the Yankees started out triumphant. He legged out an infield single in the first inning and eventually scored a run. His left ankle — broken in the 2012 postseason and saddled with setbacks since the spring — looked fine. Later in the game, however, Jeter hurt his right quad running to first base. An MRI revealed the Grade 1 strain.

Cashman said at the Friday news conference that maybe the Yankees bringing Jeter back sooner than expected contributed to the injury, but it was hard to say for sure. Jeter was supposed to return to the lineup Friday, per the Yankees rehab plans. He was scheduled to DH in Triple-A on Thursday, but Cashman decided it wouldn’t be much different if Jeter DH’d for the Yankees. In his own defense, Cashman noted that Jeter could have strained his quad in Triple-A too.

Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan says Jeter missing a week would be the best case scenario. Such a quad injury, Passan says, usually takes two or three weeks to heal, and could sideline Jeter until August.

Losing Jeter, 39, to the disabled list again would be a big blow for the Yankees — not only because they need bodies, but also mentally. They’ve already had Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira and Kevin Youkilis return from injury this season, only to go back on the disabled list shortly after. Adding Jeter to the body count would be crushing.

“We just have to give it some time and see how he responds,” Cashman said.

Judging from the Yankees’ luck this year, Cashman better be crossing every finger and toe he has.

“It’s frustrating. I don’t know what else you want me to say. I worked hard to get to the point of rejoining the team yesterday. It’s not how you draw it up, but hopefully I’ll be back out there soon and help this team win some games.”
