College Kid Makes Incredible $10,000 Half-Court Shot, School Wants to Screw Him Out of His Prize

WCU halfcourt shotJack Lavery, a freshman at West Chester College, pulled off the rare layup, free throw, 3-pointer, half court shot mixture throughout halftime at a latest WCU game against Shippensburg. Lavery needed to hit all four pictures in lower than 25-seconds to win $10,000. Lavery made the first three pictures earlier than airballing his first attempt from half-court. By some means, he tracked down the ball – without any help – and made it back to half-court to hit a one-handed bankshot while falling away on the buzzer. The gang and announcer went wild. Lavery celebrated and then WCU officers told him he wouldn’t be getting the $10,00o prize as a result of he didn’t make his first half court try.

The varsity claims that the contract Lavery signed says he needed to join on his first shot from half-courtroom. (To not mention the truth that Lavery’s father informed his son he would match the $10,000 if he received.) If that's the case, is there even some extent to the 25-second clock? And does the competition end if he had missed the primary layup? And shouldn’t the guy with the microphone know the rules? Hopefully, WCU makes this right and offers the child the ten grand he so spectacularly earned. In any other case, to cite William Shakespeare, “What a dick transfer.”

#13 LSU Tigers (7-2)@ #1 Alabama Crimson Tide (8-0) 11/09- 8:00PM EST

Line: ALA -12.5

Over/Under: 55.0

What else would we expect from the Southeastern Conference but another “must-see” game that may become another SEC “classic” between No.13 LSU as they travel into Tuscaloosa, AL to try to knock off No.1 Alabama in a Saturday night marquee match-up.

With the Crimson Tide (8-0, 5-0) in the drivers seat once again in the BCS standings and favored for their third-straight consecutive national championship, the oddsmakers have them defeating the Tigers (7-2, 3-2) and staying ahead of the other four unbeaten teams as they continue to push forward for another BCS title shot in the Rose Bowl come January.

The Tide know all they have to do is take care of business and not worry about the other unbeaten teams.

Probably not, but I’m not thinking about everybody else,” said Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron. “I could care less about what their record is. It’s no disrespect to them. They’re all having great seasons, but we’re worried about us and what we need to do to take care of business.”

If Alabama can get past an LSU Tigers team, they won’t be challenged again until their final season-finale against No. 7 Auburn.

This is not the kind of game that anybody could not get excited about playing in,” Bama coach Nick Saban said.

The Tigers themselves could very well have been in championship talks if it not weren’t for a pair of three-point road losses to then-No. 9 Georgia and Mississippi.

I can tell you that our guys are in college football for these kind of games,” LSU coach Les Miles said. “We look forward to playing in them. It’s a great opportunity for all. Any time you line up against Alabama, there’s a rivalry. There’s national prestige.

I think the greatest compliment that we can pay an opponent is our best efforts, and certainly Alabama will get that.”

LSU has won two of the last three regular-season meetings and all three have been decided by four points or less.

Last years game won by the Tide 21-17 was decided by T.J. Yeldon’s 28 yard touchdown pass from McCarron with 51 seconds remaining.

Last year’s game hurt,” LSU defensive tackle Ego Ferguson said. “We played a great game until the last minute. Now, I’m just getting ready for this game. Every year we play, it’s a huge game, a rivalry game. Everybody is doubting us. I just want to prove them wrong. We play better when everybody’s against us.

This is a chance to showcase our talent. It’s like an Ali-Foreman fight every time we play. The intensity level is like no other game.”

The last few years both teams have played in some dramatic finishes.. last year’s game, and in 2011 the “Game of the Century” (1 versus 2) came down to kickers with LSU winning in overtime 9-6. In 2010, LSU won 24-21.

Great defense on both sides, people making plays left and right, Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosely said.

This Saturday night, it’s all the line once more and a perfect performance may be needed to come out victorious.

Coach always tells u to go out and play our best game,” Alabama receiver Kevin Norwood said. “We don’t look for pretty good, we look for the best that we can play.”

Defensive battles have been the status quo between these two teams in recent years, but the betting lines tell a different story for this year’s game prediction which you can find up to the minute here at Wonder Punter.

Get ready for another great game!

Berman said negotiations began in earnest the previous couple of weeks on the heels of an appellate court docket affirming in July a U.S. District Courtroom choice that dominated that EA couldn’t use a First Modification defense of free speech.

After the perimeters had met with a mediator, they put the ending touches on a settlement, which Berman says will embrace between 200,000 and 300,000 former school soccer players whose likenesses have been used within the game.

Berman would solely say that the settlement would provide the ex-players with “one thing substantive.” He stated that a list of gamers with their present addresses shall be compiled and, as soon as the court docket approves the settlement and the money is paid out, he hopes the gamers can get checks sent to their present residences as a substitute of getting to claim it.

“After we filed the case, we felt very strongly that EA’s appropriation of scholar-athletes’ images for a for-profit venture was mistaken, each in a authorized sense and from a extra fundamental ethical perspective,” Berman said in a statement. “These guys had been busting their butts on the sector or the courtroom trying to excel at athletics, oftentimes to assist win or maintain scholarships so they may get an education.

“Students agreed that by being student-athletes that they might not exploit their personal industrial value, an agreement they lived as much as. The same cannot be said in regards to the NCAA or its associate Digital Arts.”

For its part, EA Sports – which won’t admit any wrongdoing as a part of the settlement agreement – stated in a press release Thursday that “we observe rules that are set by the NCAA – however those guidelines are being challenged by some scholar-athletes.”

EA Sports activities mentioned the decision is not going to affect its support for “NCAA Football 14,” which was launched in July. The Redwood City, Calif., company also mentioned that it is working to reassign staffers who labored on the game.

The NCAA mentioned earlier this 12 months that it would take its title off the sport, however that doesn’t absolve the governing body of earlier legal exposure. With EA Sports and CLC dropped as defendants, the NCAA now will probably be litigated towards alone in the class-action lawsuits spearheaded by former faculty quarterback Sam Keller and former UCLA basketball player Ed O’Bannon.

Mark Ingram

AP Picture/EA Sports activitiesStarting subsequent 12 months, EA Sports no longer will produce its standard NCAA Soccer recreation, which included former Alabama star Mark Ingram on its cowl for the 2012 version.

The NCAA’s chief authorized officer, Donald Remy, informed USA At this time that the NCAA was “not prepared to compromise on this case.”

It was accomplished to protest the NCAA’s remedy of athletes on issues ranging from concussions to compensation.

One lawyer involved within the case suggested Thursday’s settlement means present gamers now shall be entitled to get compensation, too.

“At present’s settlement is a sport-changer as a result of, for the primary time, scholar-athletes suiting as much as play this weekend are going to be paid for the usage of their likenesses,” stated Eugene Egdorf, a Houston-based mostly lawyer who litigated on behalf of the previous faculty gamers. “We view this as the first step towards our final aim of creating certain all student-athletes can claim their fair proportion of the billions of dollars generated every year by school sports activities.”

EA Sports activities provided athletic departments with extra licensing royalties than any other non-attire licensee, in accordance with knowledge released by CLC.

NCAA athletic directors believe pay-for-play has “no part” in college athletics

120 members of the Nationwide Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics convened at the Division 1A’s athletic directors’ metting this week and issued a press release Wednesday acknowledging that they’re committed to working together to assist with reforms to the NCAA governance process.nc

Nonetheless, pay-for-play won’t be a reform that’s supported. It isn’t a startling revelation, but one which reinforces that while the pay-for-play motion could also be growing, there’s nonetheless a great distance for it to go to gain vital traction.

“Pay for play has no half within the novice setting,” president of the Division 1A Athletic Administrators’ Association Morgan Burke said in a press release that adopted his quote with the notation that “the value of a full scholarship and direct help providers at Purdue has a price in excess of $250,000. Plus, pupil-athletes with a full scholarship don’t have any loan to pay back, an expense that might run upwards of $200,000 at Purdue.”

Burke is the athletic director at Purdue. Both Burke and Missouri’s Mike Alden, the president of the NACDA will function nationwide spokespeople according to the statement.

Pay-for-play has been in the limelight lately after a Yahoo Sports activities report discovered that five SEC gamers have been paid through an middleman last season. Houston Texas running again Arian Foster said lately that he was paid while he was at Tennessee and allegations of pay-for-play were included in Sports Illustrated’s feature series on Oklahoma State.

In Foster’s case, his admission is after the present NCAA statute of limitations expires. Because of a myriad of factors laid out by Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel here, the NCAA probably will not be capable of do much, if anything to the applications of the SEC players.

“As a group, the athletics administrators are engaged in creating recommendations that can improve the governance and operation of intercollegiate athletics,” Burke said within the statement.

What are some concepts for these recommendations? We’ll discover out when Burke and Alden schedule a teleconference in the near future.

Concordia College (Ala.) players safe but loses all of its equipment after team bus blows up

(Core360m.com)

Concordia College Alabama coach Don Lee can’t assist however think someone was watching over his team Saturday when the second of two buses headed for his or her game towards Miles College blew up in front of them.

Lee, who can also be the athletic director of the small faculty in Selma, Ala., was on the first bus when his telephone and the phones of others on his bus began ringing. He appeared behind him and noticed his second bus wasn’t there. The motive force of the second bus stated that they had blown a tire and, as they tried to pull off the highway safely, blew another tire, which began a fire in the back of the bus.

“We had about 56 or fifty seven folks on that bus,” Lee informed Yahoo Sports activities. “Once we didn’t see it, we acquired to a stop sign and circled. We bought to the bus and pulled everyone off. About 5 or 10 minutes after that, after we had gotten everybody to safety, the bus blew up. I imply blew up. We were just so blessed that we bought everybody out safely.”

Concordia School Alabama bus following fireplace (@alastormspotter)

While Lee was thankful his workforce was secure, he couldn’t say the same for the group’s tools, which included uniforms, pads, balls and every part else the Hornets carry with them on sport days.

“You already know, we’re a small school and we solely had one uniform; it’s gone,” said Lee, whose workforce is an unbiased Division I member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Affiliation. “Pads, kicking nets, every thing is gone. We practiced at 5:30 this morning, all people confirmed up, and we were in tennis footwear and shorts and we just went over approach.”

Compounding issues is the truth that the Hornets have a sport on Thursday. Lee said Morgan Academy, a private faculty catering to children from Kindergarten by means of 12th grade, is loaning Concordia Faculty Alabama its 30 sets of soccer pads. Jeff Davis High College in Montgomery is loaning out uniforms because they’re the same shade. That also leaves Concordia Faculty Alabama with out sneakers, balls and other basic tools, but Lee mentioned he’s not done making calls. He’s even thinking of reaching out to the University of Alabama, simply to see if he can get his players cleats.

“I’m going to attempt to get in contact with Alabama as a result of I do know they’ve further cleats and stuff,” Lee stated. “I just haven’t had any time. At a small college like this, I’m the football coach and the ADVERT and I paint the sphere and the whole lot else.

“We now have insurance coverage, but that takes awhile to kind everything out about who gets paid what and when.”

The state of Alabama does have an embarrassment of riches with regards to school football with program’s equivalent to Alabama and Auburn, which might most likely spare some apply gear and cleats to a in-state college in want.

Lee mentioned he’s doing something to make sure he doesn’t must cancel the season because of the dearth of funds or help wanted to keep his program afloat after this accident.

“I’ve never been apart of anything like this earlier than in my 15 years as coach,” Lee said. “We have been blessed to get everybody off the bus and get everyone protected.

“All people’s in nice spirits, they’re simply looking at me to see what’s next.”

College football game rips apart Busch Stadium turf

(AP)

For some cause, the St. Louis Cardinals allowed two college soccer teams to play at Busch Stadium on Saturday, and the game pitting Southern Illinois towards Southeast Missouri did a number on the bluegrass turf. The Cardinals, who sit two games ahead of the Pittsburgh Pirates within the NL Central standings coming in, play six more video games at home this week and, probably, two more the week after when the playoffs start Oct. four or 5.

So a lot for Busch being a baseball-solely facility. The ballpark this season already has hosted concerts by the Dave Matthews Band and U2, along with a world soccer pleasant. What’s slightly American college football to high it off? Nicely, it was a lot to handle, contemplating the heavy rains St. Louis endured Thursday and Friday.

Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch lined the game and talked to groundskeeper Billy Findley and VP of stadium operations Joe Abernathy. Strauss’s recap, predictably, described the damage with a stinging truth:

Kickoff was still an hour away when Findley seen turf arising as linemen went by way of drills. Even the kickers’ sideline ballet rubbed bare spots.

By the time Abernathy and Findley took their halftime tour, the turf seemed as if it had staged a cattle drive followed by a rodeo capped by a monster truck pull. (In hindsight, such an all-inclusive extravaganza would have generated a wider revenue stream whereas exacting no extra damage.) Findley at one level stooped to lift a 2-foot-lengthy grass pelt. He didn’t faucet it down or use it to exchange damage elsewhere. He merely carried it with him as a memento from a worst-case situation come true.

Sounds like Findley was carrying a physique. At the least the gridiron stayed away from the infield, for the most half. And Strauss should not give the Cardinals any recent ideas with the cattle drive/monster truck rodeo concept.

(AP)

Of all the times for Busch to host the first soccer game in its history, now wasn’t the very best moment for the baseball team, the primary tenant. However, with the Ohio Valley Conference schedule beginning next week and working by way of the final week of November, apparently this was one of the best time for the colleges.

But about that: As Strauss notes, whole enrollment at SIU and SEMO is about 30,000, and game attendance at Busch was 14,618. Is all of that price it to the Cardinals, simply to make some cash and drive their groundskeeper batty? Cardinals president Invoice DeWitt said he expects the sector to be in higher form than how the baseball team left it. In fact, that opinion relies on the group reshaping the field by importing 13 truckloads of sod from Colorado, the place it has been flooding.

The gamers already are thinking about what kind of floor awaits them, with outfielder Matt Holliday telling the P-D:

“It’s something you concentrate on — the situation of the field, how it’s going to play and what a soccer game would do to that. And you think about at this level of the season, being in a pennant chase and the timing of it. You don’t need something to keep the sphere from being at its finest.”

At least Team Fredbird could depend on the bogus floor at Busch II holding agency when the soccer Cardinals still performed in St. Louis in the eighties. If the Cardinals want to use new Busch for any previous occasion, they could wish to consider putting in the newfangled fake stuff. Not that Dick Allen’s horse might eat it. And it will just kill the Rally Squirrel.

Winners and Losers: College football’s worst weekend lives up to its billing

(USA Immediately Sports activities Pictures)

We have been promised a horrible weekend of football and we weren’t disenchanted.

Yes, there have been good video games here and there, however unless you take pleasure in watching patsies get 70 factors dropped on them, this weekend was just about a bust.

But there may be good news – LSU coach Le Miles gave us this gem for the weekend:

And the weekend is over.

The weekends of terrible non-convention video games are a thing of the previous and we are able to now move forward with conference play.

If there’s one factor we can take from this weekend, it’s that offense reigns supreme. 4 groups – Ohio State, Louisville, Baylor and Miami – scored greater than 70 factors. Seventeen groups scored greater than 50 points and 30 groups scored more than 40 factors.

The increase of offense is a big win for followers who love to watch dazzling scoring performs and superb runs and catches, but a big loss for defensive coordinators, who are doing all they’ll simply to maintain up.

Here are the remainder of the winners and losers from the weekend:

WINNERS

Kansas: It’s been more than two years since Kansas may brag a couple of win over an FBS crew – until Saturday. Matt Wyman’s 52-yard discipline objective as time expired gave the Jayhawks a 13-10 win over Louisiana Tech and snapped a 22-recreation losing streak to groups from the FBS. On the flipside, nevertheless, Kansas followers belong in our “Losers” section for speeding the sector for a win in opposition to a 1-3 Louisiana Tech workforce. Hey, keep in mind when Kansas was within the Orange Bowl in 2008?

Baylor: Is this our favourite in the Massive 12? Don’t giggle, but the Baylor offense may be the most effective in the state of Texas and has a case for finest in the country. The Bears put up 70 factors on Louisiana-Monroe Saturday, and that was after a scoreless last 22 minutes. Working back Lache Seastrunk is averaging eleven yards per carry on the season, and Bryce Petty has tossed eight touchdowns.

Yeah, Baylor hasn’t played anybody but. However they’ve scored sixty nine, 70 and 70 this season. That is an unmatched offensive resume, especially when you think about the effectivity.

Texas: Mack Brown’s said crew purpose of winning the Big 12 is still on monitor. Is it enough to stop the printing of hundreds extra Saban 2014 shirts?

Texas controlled Kansas State for a 31-21 win Saturday evening to move to 2-2 on the season. The sport was slightly too close for many UT fans late — Kansas State had the ball inside the Texas 10 with two minutes left — but a Jake Waters fumble after he ran right into a teammate sealed the deal for the Longhorns.

It wasn’t a pretty win, and while Baylor is piling up the points, this is nonetheless a flawed Large 12. Texas nonetheless stacks up fourth at finest if you’re ranking the conference at this time, however the first win in opposition to Kansas State since 2003 goes a great distance.

Steven Nelson: With Oregon State trailing by two with 2:30 to go within the fourth quarter and San Diego State with the ball, Nelson’s role as cornerback would primarily be in run assist, right? Nope. On second down, San Diego State drew up a go play and Quinn Kaehler wildly overthrew his receiver on a fast cease route.

Nelson was there behind him, snatched the ball out of the air and waltzed into the tip zone for a 34-30 Oregon State lead that may in the end be the ultimate score. The Beavers trailed a lot of the game, but got here back with 20 fourth-quarter factors to win their third straight after dropping the primary week of the season in opposition to Jap Washington.

Jeremy Hill: The LSU working back ran for 2 first-quarter touchdowns and 184 yards in his second start of the season against Auburn on Saturday night. After being suspended for a bar incident for the primary recreation of the yr against TCU, Hill has made essentially the most of his return to the sphere. He’s totaled 351 yards on just 42 carries and has six touchdowns. With Hill bursting by way of the line and the improved play of Zach Mettenberger, LSU’s offense may be much better than we thought it might be.

BONUS WINNER

(USA Today Sports activities Pictures)

This photograph was top-of-the-line of the weekend as it confirmed the sport-dropping drop by Marshall receiver Davonte Allen throughout a 3 extra time loss to Virginia Tech.

LOSERS

West Virginia: Things aren’t good in Morgantown. The Mountaineers have been shut out 37-0 against Maryland on Saturday, the first time that coach Dana Holgorsen has been shut out on the D1 degree either as an assistant or a head coach. Holgo has gone by way of three quarterbacks this season, Paul Millard, Clint Trickett and Ford Childress, and none have been effective. Childress received the call on Saturday and was a measly eleven-22 for sixty eight yards and two interceptions. In a large open Large 12, West Virginia appears to be like like it’s going to be at the bottom with Kansas and Iowa State.

Georgia ball boy: Things move quick in the Georgia offense, particularly when the Bulldogs are going through a potential upset by North Texas. That’s why even the ball boys must hold their heads on a swivel. Luckily for this guy, he appeared rattled, however unscathed.

Miami (Ohio): It’s a must to reap the benefits of the occasions when your protection is pitching a shutout. The RedHawks didn’t do this. Miami held Cincinnati scoreless for fifty five minutes, but once the Bearcats acquired into the top zone, it was throughout.

Why? Miami totaled a single web yard in the second half. One. It was a putrid offensive outing, failing to convert a single third down and ended up leading to 12 web yards speeding after 5 sacks on 28 carries. That’s 0.4 yards per carry. Cincinnati ought to almost be embarrassed the ultimate score was just 14-0.

Braxton Miller: Ohio State’s star quarterback sat on the sideline – once more – while backup Kenny Guiton took benefit of his alternative to begin and shined. Guiton threw an Ohio State document six touchdowns – by halftime. Miller has been on the bench nursing a strained MCL since Week 2 and in that time Guiton has been enjoying higher and higher and gaining quite a lot of momentum to be the starter.

While coach Urban Meyer stated Miller — a Heisman Trophy candidate coming into the season — wouldn’t lose his beginning spot to damage, it’s a must to surprise how much leash he’ll get before Meyer turns again to Guiton.

(USA As we speak Sports Images)

Michigan State playcalling: Coach Mark Dantonio took the credit score for a botched trick play late within the third quarter that ultimately led to Notre Dame scoring the sport-winning touchdown early within the fourth quarter. With the offense rolling, Dantonio determined to put receiver R.J. Shelton in as a wildcat. Shelton threw the ball into double coverage and safety Matthias Farley picked him off.

“I felt like we would have liked a giant play,” Dantonio mentioned.

It was a giant play all proper. An enormous play that led to a 17-thirteen Notre Dame win.

Julian Boyd, the Northeast Conference participant of the yr in 2012, tore the ACL in his proper knee for the second time in 9 months earlier this summer season, assistant athletic director Dan Lobacz confirmed to Yahoo Sports activities on Wednesday. A January return for Boyd would be the very best-case state of affairs, however the 6-foot-7 senior could miss your complete 2013-14 season, thus ending his school profession.

Boyd was averaging 18.5 points and 6.1 rebounds by means of eight video games last season when he tore his ACL diving for a loose ball near mid-court docket in the second half of a 97-70 win over Rice. He might solely watch from the sideline as his teammates initially dropped six of their first seven video games with out him earlier than righting themselves, profitable 12 league games and capturing the NEC tournament.

Though Boyd also missed the 2010-11 season on account of a coronary heart situation, the NCAA granted him a sixth year of eligibility in April. Lobacz stated he was on monitor to make a full recovery from the primary ACL tear before re-injurying the knee this summer season.

Whereas LIU Brooklyn had sufficient scorers on its roster to beat Boyd’s absence final winter, the Blackbirds could wrestle extra next season. NEC participant of the year Jamal Olasawere and NEC match MVP C.J. Garner are among the four key gamers already gone from last year’s crew.

The greatest returning player for LIU Brooklyn is point guard Jason Brickman, who set an NEC assists document final season at 8.5 per sport. Brickman has thrived creating scoring alternatives for the wealth of scorers round him the previous few seasons, but the move-first point guard could have a tougher time as a senior with Olasawere, Garner and Boyd every unavailable.

Texans rookie Cierre Wood says he once said hello to college teammate Manti Te’o’s girlfriend

(USA Right this moment Sports activities Images)

Houston Texans running back Cierre Wooden played at Notre Dame last season, which normally wouldn’t be that interesting in a NFL locker room.

But, Wooden picked an attention-grabbing 12 months to be at Notre Dame, with the Manti Te’o story and all.

[We’ll assume you do not forget that debacle, about Te’o believing he had a girlfriend, then it turned out she didn’t exist. A Deadspin story exposed the hoax, which Te’o had no half in orchestrating regardless of cries to the contrary when the story got here out. Since then Te’o has been the punchline for tens of millions of unfunny jokes. (Severely people, should you’re nonetheless using Te’o faux girlfriend jokes, please work on your routine.)

NFL players are like the remainder of us, and it isn’t stunning that Wood was asked about Te’o not lengthy after the Texans signed him as an undrafted free agent.

“All people asks me about Te’o,” Wood advised CSNHouston.com. “That was simply something I expected was going to occur. I acquired asked on the street a couple times, so I anticipated it in the locker room.”

It seems that Wooden actually has a good story to tell when he’s asked. He had some contact with Te’o’s girlfriend. Type of.

He said he heard a number of the conversations, and even took the chance to say whats up once.

“It was alongside the traces of, if I got here in here with a goldfish and said, ‘Hey, this is my goldfish, Larry.’ You guys are going to go, ‘OK. So what?’” Wood mentioned on Monday. “You go home after that. I might come over to ask for a controller and he could be like, ‘I’m simply gonna talk to my girl.’ I looked on the computer screen or no matter and it was clean. I really don’t care. I simply heard somebody speaking to me … ‘I just need to introduce myself. Hi. I’m Cierre. How are you doing? Nice to meet you.’ And I went on about my business.”

So there you go. But please, no Te’o jokes. They’re lame.

(Streeter Lecka/Getty Pictures)

A South Carolina restaurant goes to need to print some new menus following what is going to certainly be thorough conversations with the South Carolina and Clemson compliance departments.

The Daniel Island Grille gives Clowney’s Turkey Avocado Wrap, Tajh Boyd Chicken Quesadillas and Sammy Watkins Reuben, which isn’t precisely cool with NCAA guidelines. Considering the significance of Jadeveon Clowney to the Gamecocks and Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins to the Tigers, it’s not surprising the colleges will probably be taking every attainable step to retain the eligibility of their stars.

(through @mkierce) The rule in query is NCAA Bylaw 12.5.2.2., which states:

If a pupil-athlete’s title or image appears on industrial objects (e.g., T-shirts, sweatshirts, serving trays, enjoying cards, posters, photographs) or is used to promote a industrial product offered by an individual or company with out the scholar-athlete’s knowledge or permission, the scholar-athlete (or the establishment acting on behalf of the scholar-athlete) is required to take steps to stop such an activity as a way to retain his or her eligibility for intercollegiate athletics.

The Put up and Courier bought statements from each universities as they take the required steps to maintain the potential first round picks on the sphere:

On Sunday morning, South Carolina sports information director Steve Fink stated in an e-mail: “We had been unaware that Jadeveon’s title was being used on this manner. We will comply with up and take the appropriate actions vital.”

Clemson released the following assertion to The Put up and Courier on Aug. 7: “The Clemson Athletic Department works hand and hand with CLC and the College Common Counsel to stop any unauthorized use of our scholar’s title or likeness.”

The on-line menu for the restaurant would not listing the faculty stars (although we’re unsure if they had been ever there in the first place), however you may order items named after Andy Pettitte, Michael Phelps, Luca Brasi or Rocky Balboa, amongst many others.

Ricky Williams returns to college football…as a coach

University of the Incarnate Word new assistant football coach Ricky Williams, left, talks with gamers during an …

Ricky Williams’ lengthy, attention-grabbing soccer resume has one other line on it after Thursday: Coach.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”17″]

The 1998 Heisman winner and Longhorn great was hired by the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio as an assistant coach, the place he’ll work primarily with the operating backs. As a two-time Doak Walker award winner because the nation’s finest working back and the quantity two all-time profession rushing chief, Williams is greater than certified for the function.

“This my first experience teaching, but after all,” stated Williams. “Even when I was a kid growing up, I liked soccer players, but the people on the field that I idolized were truly the coaches.”

Cardinals head coach Larry Kennan was impressed with the legendary back and fortunately welcomed him into the fold. It probably did not harm Williams’ trigger that both Mack Brown and Nick Saban wrote him letters of recommendation for the job.

”He is a superb man and was an important, nice football player,” Kennan stated. ”He’ll be a beautiful mentor for our guys each as a running backs coach and a man who’s lived lots of life and has bought some knowledge. That is what we do as coaches; we impart our knowledge to them.”

The Cardinals – with an enrollment of over 9,000 students – are making the transition from NCAA Division II and the Lone Star Convention to NCAA Division I and the Southland Convention. As a consequence of his broadcasting obligations, Williams will miss some games, but plans on serving to the gamers as much as attainable throughout the week at follow. However since their first game is on a Thursday, he’ll be a part of the squad on their nine-hour bus experience to face Central Arkansas.

”I haven’t got anything to show to these youngsters,” Williams said. ”I simply wish to show them that I am right here to help them be as good as they need to be. That is not just on the football area, that is also off the football field.”

Adrian Peterson joins the list of people who think college players should be paid

(USA At the moment Sports activities Photographs)

Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops thinks school players shouldn’t be paid. The perfect participant Stoops has coached, a player who helped Stoops become a really rich man, disagrees.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”20″]

Put NFL MVP Adrian Peterson on the listing of people who see the hypocrisy of school sports activities for what it’s.

Peterson, in an interview with Ross Jones of Fox Sports activities, said he thinks college players should be allowed to profit off their identify, in response to the investigation of Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel probably getting paid for signing autographs.

“I feel so,” Peterson advised FOXSports.com. “The colleges are making a lot of money off of student athletes normally. So, yeah he should be able to make cash. I feel so. They make thousands and thousands off of those school athletes and so they made thousands and thousands off of the guys I played with as well. Yeah, he must be getting paid.”

The extra excessive-profile players who point out the hypocrisy of faculty athletics, the better. Dez Bryant additionally did so this week when he said he would be upset at the NCAA if it did not suspend Johnny Manziel over the autograph-signing investigation, considering Bryant was suspended for most of his closing season after lying about having a legal dinner with Deion Sanders.

However, the identical NFL that employs Peterson and Bryant helps the college system exploit gamers. NBA, NHL and MLB groups all pay for a minor-league system. How does the NFL get around that? By the rule that players can’t declare for the draft until they’re three years faraway from high school. The NFL doesn’t need a minor league, as a result of their minor league is college soccer. By an unfair rule that retains gamers like Jadeveon Clowney, Marqise Lee and (maddeningly) Marcus Lattimore in faculty for at the least three years even if they’re ready to play within the execs, the NFL gets free scouting. The NFL players’ union has no motive to fight against that rule in collective bargaining classes, contemplating it may cost some veterans (its current membership) some jobs. And then football-playing faculties can proceed to fill stadiums and drag in television cash as a result of the best players need to undergo their system. It’s a fairly tidy monopoly that permits schools to chase every penny attainable through realignment and television contracts. And it could be political suicide for anyone in power to significantly change school athletics, the only multi-billion dollar business in America in which the most expert laborers don’t get paid. Everybody wins! Besides school athletes, the only individuals not allowed to revenue off faculty athletics.

It’s great when stars like Peterson draw consideration to how ridiculous the college athletics system is. Perhaps if professional gamers continue to talk out, somebody will pay attention.

College player who was struck by a skydiver diagnosed with a concussion, out for the season

The college baseball player who was struck by a skydiver during a pregame ceremony on Saturday didn’t just achieve viral Internet fame (though, the video of this mishap does have more than a million hits now). He also suffered a concussion that will end his season of summer ball.

Mattingly Romanin — let’s all just pause and think about how great that name is — is the infielder for the Hannibal Cavemen — another great name — who was hit during a skydiving stunt gone awry.

At the time, it didn’t seem like he was hurt too bad. But after seeing a doctor on Monday, Romanin was diagnosed with a concussion. Since he suffered another in the spring while playing for Chicago State University, Romanin’s coaches shut him down for the 18 remaining games this summer.

All things considered, Romanin seems to be taking the whole ordeal quite well. From the Quincy Herald-Whig (yet another great name):

“I still have headaches and stuff like that, and I just feel a little slow,” Romanin said during a phone interview Tuesday. “It is unfortunate that it ended my season, and I’m a little upset about that, but you know what, it’s just a freak accident and there’s nothing we can do now. So I’m still trying to be upbeat it, and I’m still laughing with everybody.”

It’s good that he’s laughing about it — other ballplayers might be fuming that they got hurt in such a ridiculous way, especially with a head injury. Heck, some people would probably be discussing lawsuits.

Mattingly Romanin might go down as the guy who got hurt because of a skydiver, but he certainly doesn’t belong in baseball’s Silly Injury Hall of Fame for this. Only the Cool Baseball Name Hall of Fame

Looking ahead to college football: Week 13′s five games to watch

(Brett Davis/USA TODAY Sports) The college football offseason is long and arduous, but its end is almost in sight. We’re going to take a look at five games you have to look forward to for every weekend of the season. (This is also a handy guide to decide how to RSVP for any autumn weddings.)

All times are Eastern and all games are played on Saturday unless otherwise noted. This week is “Rest up for your rivalries week,” so a lot of teams (Hello Florida, Florida State, Clemson, South Carolina and Alabama) are taking it easy with cupcake opponents.

These games are played the weekend of November 23.

Texas A&M at LSU (TBD) – Kevin Sumlin’s team dropped two SEC games last year: the opener to Florida and a mid-October 24-19 home loss to the Bayou Bengals. The Aggies led 12-0 before the LSU defense started to go to work, forcing five turnovers and not allowing Manziel to throw or run for a single touchdown. On the plus side for A&M, a lot of really talented players from last season’s LSU defense are now in the NFL. On the minus side, instead of the friendly confines of Kyle Field, they have to travel to Death Valley, their first trip to Baton Rouge since 1994. If the Aggie season is going as predicted – they could easily be 9-1 or 10-0 at this point – the atmosphere is going to be amazing.
Oregon at Arizona (TBD) – A trip to Autzen was Rich Rodriguez’s first Pac-12 game last year, and while the Wildcats came in 3-0 and feeling pretty good they were quickly brought down to earth, getting waylaid 49-to-zip. Will the Arizona defense that returns all of its starters be able to improve on last year’s effort, or will they simply be more experienced at watching De’Anthony Thomas run past them? And after shockingly getting shut out, will Year Two of the Rodriguez spread offense in Tucson prove more effective against the Ducks this time around?

Can Bryce Petty fill the talented shoes of RG3 and Nick Florence? (Jerome Miron/USA TODAY Sports) Baylor at Oklahoma State (TBD) – I wonder if Art Briles is happy with how the Big 12 schedule ended up breaking for the Bears. On one hand, it would take a couple big upsets for Baylor to go into November worse than 6-1. On the other, their closing stretch is absolutely brutal, as they face Oklahoma, Texas Tech (in Arlington), travel to Oklahoma State and TCU before closing with Texas at home. New quarterback Bryce Petty (there are other options, but every Baylor preview I read has him as the starter) will presumably be comfortable at the controls, but this trip to Stillwater comes in the middle of an incredibly rough stretch. Last year, Baylor won this matchu up 41-34, ending a six-game Cowboys win streak.

Arizona State at UCLA (TBD) – If you are under the impression that there is no true favorite in the Pac-12 South and that it is instead a likely round robin of death between USC, these two teams and possibly Arizona, then this is a huge game. Last year’s edition was 45-43 classic, with the Sun Devils taking a one-point lead with 1:33 remaining only to watch Brett Hundley set up a game-winning field goal that was went through as time expired. If this game is half as fun as that one – which featured a whopping 50 combined second-half points – we’re in for a treat.

Vanderbilt at Tennessee (TBD) – Derek Dooley was fired as head coach on Rocky Top for a number of reasons, but it certainly didn’t help last year was only the second time in three decades that the Commodores have knocked off the Volunteers. What made it worse is that it wasn’t particularly close in the second half, as a 13-10 halftime lead for Tennessee turned into a 41-18 loss. New coach Butch Jones has fans and recruits fired up on speeches and sales pitches, but a victory over their surging instate rival would be tangible evidence that things are getting back to normal in Knoxville.

Other games considered:

Washington at Oregon State (TBD) – Two teams that should just be very solid in 2013 but have a minimal chance of competing for a league title unless something unexpected happens to both Oregon and Stanford.

BYU at Notre Dame (TBD) Last year’s 14-10 Irish win was less “football game” and more “bored child smashing rocks together while he’s ‘helping’ his parents landscape.” Two of the finest defenses in the land last year square off again, and barring a drastic burst by either offense, points will be hard to come by.

Boise State at San Diego State (10:30 p.m., CBS Sports) – We’re going to need to come up with a Twitter hashtag for these late-night Mountain West games. You might laugh at them now, but they’re going to be quality teams with a late enough start time you can try to recoup your gambling losses from earlier in the day.

Northern Illinois at Toledo (8:00 p.m., ESPN2, Wednesday) – Primetime Jordan Lynch #MACtion! The Rockets are at home and return a bunch of nice pieces on offense, so they should make a capable foil for the Huskies quarterback.

Indiana at Ohio State (TBD) – Last year Indiana only lost this game 52-49. Yes, that was at home and this is on the road, and yes, Ohio State is probably going to be a lot better, but I just feel like this should be noted.
