The box just got bigger and bigger.

"Everybody [saw] it. So I feel like these coaches are going to come in, they're going to watch film and they're going to see. They're going to see what type of players that want to be here and don't want to be here, and he's going to get rid of them. " In those last two sentences, Walker is referring to new coach Ken Whisenhunt and his staff.

As far as the so-called cancers, Walker wouldn't name names, but he also said the players and coaches in the locker room know who they were.

It has recently been some days since Alex Rodriguez's record 162-game postponement, interruption was first announced, and, with regard to the most part, ideas have calmed down. fairly speaking, of course. A-Rod remains suing everyone within sight plus scorching every last bit of Earth. Yet at least right now there not necessarily non-stop reports about this anymore.

From the owners' meetings during Arizona on Wednesday, Yankees' owner Hal Steinbrenner mentioned Rodriguez for the 1st time since the suspension system was handed down. Here's exactly what the person said, courtesy regarding Ken Davidoff of typically the

New York submit:

“He's a great professional, ” Steinbrenner said inside the Yankees' managing general spouse-to-be's first public comments because independent arbitrator Fredric Horowitz reduced Rodriguez's suspension through 211 games to 162 games. “I have not seriously considered 2015, nor feel I going to right now. My focus needs to be right now. But when your dog is on and when he's healthy and balanced, she has obviously an advantage. We'll see where the night takes us. ”

“Those of a person that discover me, I am pretty ambition in our thinking. This is online business. I'm just focusing about they, a player. Is the player a property to the club or not? which about as significantly as I glance. I actually don't get personal. ”

That is not a "yeah we're going welcome him back following your suspension, " but difficult a "he'll never execute for us again" possibly. Keep in mind that Steinbrenner has no reason to come out and mention their life plans regarding Rodriguez. probably they may release him adopting the postponement, interruption, but there's no fact to say that today.

In person, I don't believe A-Rod may ever play the next MLB game. I think typically the Yankees will cut the dog loose following the suspension not to mention eat the $61 thousand left on their contract in order to be free of the head ache. Simply no other team will trouble giving him a call following that. Maybe if this was first in-his-prime A-Rod, nevertheless the 35 (soon to be 39) year old edition isn't worth the particular muddiness.

Rivers calls Griffin-Anthony trade rumors ‘stupid’

Doc Rivers has himself a high horse to ride. (USATSI)
Doc Rivers has himself a excessive horse to journey. (USATSI)

When Doc Rivers was in Boston, rumors have been a pretty common commodity about attainable trades. Every week for three years, there have been discussions leaked to the media about doable trades. And every time Doc Rivers would deny that they had been going on. Ray Allen confirmed that a number of that the Celtics denied ever having taking place had been actually true.

Oh, and he denied right up until he left for the Clippers that he wished out of Boston, too.

But after all, that did not stop the parade of (falsely) righteous indignation on Saturday as Rivers sounded off in regards to the rumors of the Clippers and Knicks considering a commerce of Carmelo Anthony for Blake Griffin.

Woike had the perfect tackle this complete sequence:

And Rivers can take this approach constantly because trades are uncommon in the NBA and this one can be extraordinarily tough for both teams to justify. However that does not mean it was “created.” Somebody on both teams spoke to create this rumor. In any other case, the rumor would have simply mentioned that one crew had thought about it.

Is a reporter for a significant outlet going to manufacture a rumor like that, damaging credibility? Is it worth it? Why these two players? Why not Chris Paul and Dwight Howard, or something? But then, as a result of it may’t be proven due to it being done on background, Rivers isn’t exposed in any respect in blasting the concept.

Simply know that that is customary working process. Trade rumor gets leaked, workforce instantly makes fun of it. That’s how these items happen. The deal is unlikely to happen, but not as a result of Rivers thinks “it’s silly.”

NY – Following the Brooklyn Nets' embarrassing 95-78 Christmas Day loss to the Chicago Bulls, an exasperated Jason Kidd referred to as his gamers out within the locker room, in keeping with a number of league sources.

In opposition to Chicago, the Nets surrendered 36 points within the frame to the Derrick Rose-much less Bulls. They trailed by as many as 23 on their home courtroom.

"I think once more, it is easy, it is simple," Kidd instructed reporters after Wednesday's rout. "After we do not put the ball in the basket or we miss pictures which are makeable, it interprets to our protection of transition for us the place we'll surrender a layup and then that turns into another layup for the opposing staff… That is the carryover of missing shots and never giving the trouble. The underside line is effort, and we're not doing that proper now.

"At the finish of the day, the coach can solely maintain you liable for power and energy," Kidd said. "Should you're not giving it, I've to take you out. For those who're missing shots, that is just a part of the sport. But in case you're not giving power or effort, I've received to take you out."

What Kidd mentioned he has not been able to abdomen is the group's almost apathetic approach when adversity hits in a game and the opponent makes a run towards them.

"I believe it is getting very close to only accepting losing," Kidd mentioned of the mental state of the group on Monday. "We're sort of getting snug with losing."

"And we acquired to make a stand with that as a result of when issues get powerful, do we just give in?" Kidd continued. "And more often than not proper now, we do."

Garnett and Williams disagreed and mentioned they do not settle for losing. However the Nets had been still blown out by Chicago. Now it remains to be seen if Kidd's postgame locker room yelling will jumpstart the Nets, who face Milwaukee at house on Friday.

"I am very stunned," Pierce mentioned of the staff's struggles. "We've just got to have the ability to climate the storm. We have to be more mentally robust. You possibly can't get down when issues do not go your means. You've got to continue to fight."

"I believe it is just that we lose confidence, like we expect things to go south," Pierce added. "But you've got to keep your head up on the finish of the day. It's embarrassing to lose on Christmas and in entrance of thousands and thousands of people watching, but I'm not going to maintain my head down. That's the way in which we have to be on the market on the courtroom. We've got to continue to keep pushing."

Typically NFL players determine to take their filters off and say what they really suppose and one of those times was Tuesday when Packers offensive lineman Josh Sitton went on radio in Milwaukee and called the Lions ‘scumbags.’

Throughout an interview with WSSP-AM, Sitton didn’t maintain something back as he took jabs on the Lions protection, the Lions defensive coordinator and even Lions coach Jim Schwartz. It all started when Sitton was requested if he thought the Detroit protection would try to take out Aaron Rodgers if Rodgers were to suit up and play on Thursday. Rodgers isn’t anticipated to play.

“Completely. They go after quarterbacks, their complete defense takes cheap photographs on a regular basis. That’s what they do, that’s who they’re,” Sitton stated. “They seem to be a bunch of dirtbags or scumbags. That is simply how they play. That is how they’re coached.”

Sitton didn’t cease there either, he additionally had some alternative words for Schwartz, defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham and even Lions defensive line coach Kris Kocurek.

“That starts with their frickin’ coach. That starts with their head coach, Schwartz. He’s a dick, too,” Sitton stated. “I wouldn’t want to play for him. It starts with him and their D-coordinator and their D-line coach. They’re all simply scumbags and so are the D-line.”

The Lions defensive line is made up of starters Ndamukong Suh Nick Fairley and Willie Younger, three guys that Sitton will see loads of on Thursday because the Packers starting left guard.

Complaining about the Lions protection has been a popular thing to do this month. In mid-November, Bears vast receiver Brandon Marshall said that the Lions defense plays ‘borderline unlawful.’ Marshall additionally added that their model of play is ‘sort of disgusting.’

In fact, Marshall made his comments after the Bears performed the Lions for a second time, meaning he knew he most probably wouldn’t be seeing Detroit on the sphere once more till 2014. Sitton’s comments come two days earlier than the Packers play the Lions in a huge NFC North showdown. Here is guessing he probably won’t be shaking fingers with anybody on the Lions protection after the sport. Or earlier than the sport. Or anytime.

MLB owners OK new replay; players, umps to vote

There may be no need to argue or discuss anymore, if the players and umpires approve this proposal.
There could also be no have to argue or talk about anymore, if the players and umpires approve this proposal. (USATSI)

Main League Baseball’s proposed expanded instant replay challenge system nonetheless must be permitted by the MLB Players Affiliation and the World Umpires Affiliation, but the 30 membership house owners unanimously permitted the proposal at the GM meetings in Orlando, Fla., MLB introduced Thursday.

“My father always said life is a sequence of changes and I’ve made an adjustment,” commissioner Bud Selig said in a press convention Thursday (by way of usatoday.com). “There isn’t one play or one instance that changed my thoughts. It has simply occurred over time. I do know we’re doing the suitable factor.”

The unique plan was for every supervisor to have one problem within the first six innings of every recreation with two more obtainable per crew from the seventh inning till the tip of the sport. That has been tweaked, though, because now the system calls for two challenges per crew, per recreation with no rules on when the challenges are used.

This could be negotiated down to at least one problem per staff, per sport as a way to get this measure permitted by either the gamers or umpires.

Additionally, if a supervisor wins his problem, he’ll get to retain it. From that light, there’s actually no limit on challenges, as long as they are used to appropriate incorrect calls. And, really, there wouldn’t be a lot harm in limiting managers to 1 challenge. If he wins, he’d get to maintain it.

The challenges do not apply to performs that were already reviewable – boundary plays, akin to honest/foul calls on residence runs or fan interference on home runs. Those will still be dealt with by the umpires as they have been this past season.

Additionally, balls and strikes aren’t reviewable. MLB seems to be conveying – at least initially – that just about every thing else can be reviewable. We’ll know full details if and when the proposal has handed and expanded replay turns into part of the written rules.

“It’s a pit,” Selig mentioned. “It reminds me of previous County Stadium and Shea Stadium. We have to cope with that. I’ve had a committee working on it for two or three years, and there’s no question we’re going to have to unravel that problem.”

However hasn’t the committee been working on it for a very long time? What’s the hold-up?

“We have, John, but I’ll inform you it’s far more complicated,” Selig said. “Look, you may have one staff that wants to maneuver and the other group doesn’t want them to move, and it’s a very difficult state of affairs. Earlier than I go away, I’m happy we’ll work out one thing.”

The A's desired destination continues to be San Jose, however the San Francisco Giants have claimed ownership of the San Jose market and stay unwilling to budge. These issues have already been dragged out over the past couple years, and till the authorized matters might be resolved, the A's and MLB will likely be stuck in a holding pattern. These are the problems Selig spoke of, and even if the A's have been ultimately allowed to build in San Jose, we're talking one other 12 months or two added before they're taking part in in a brand new residence.

That is not nearly soon sufficient for Selig, who made it clear he isn't thrilled concerning the O.co Coliseum enjoying a prominent function in the postseason.

“I’m not comfortable about it,” Selig said. “It’s an unlucky mess. I wish there was a simple answer, but in fact, there may be not a simple resolution.”

Selig also weighed in on the Rays attendance issues at Tropicana Field, calling the situation "disgraceful." And offered this response when asked who he considered the all-time residence run king between Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds.

“Henry Aaron and I, as you understand, have been extremely shut mates for fifty eight years now; it’s exhausting to consider,” Selig stated. “I consider he’s the greatest participant of my generation. I saw him — I want everyone might have seen him within the ’50s when he was younger and not attempting to pull all the things. He was unbelievable to watch. Unbelievable. He’s a man of class, a man of dignity. He’s represented our sport superbly, and his carer is famous. I’m not going to say any more on that. You can figure out from my reply, I’m sure.”

Contemplating Barry Bonds was ignored in that response, we can.

The one matter pushed by Feinstein that Selig wouldn't contact was Alex Rodriguez, but who can blame him on that? He'll have plenty of time to talk about A-Rod once his hearing begins on Monday in New York.

‘SafeOut!’ Confused umpire John Hirschbeck calls it both ways on Yoenis Cespedes

johnh“Name it each ways, Blue!”

— Loudmouth at any baseball sport, ever

And finally, someone has. John Hirschbeck, one of many longest-tenured and most-revered umpires in Major League Baseball, made some of the unintentionally hilarious calls in the history of.. calls.. Tuesday evening at Angel Stadium.

In the seventh inning, slugger Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland Athletics hit a grounder to second, where Los Angeles Angels infielder Howie Kendrick stepped on the bag and fired to first, making an attempt to show a double play. Hirschbeck began to sign “protected” — no, he did signal “protected” — but then, continuing the same movement, changed his mind and signaled out. It was the quickest self-reversal in umpiring lore.

Video replay showed Hirschbeck appeared to get the call right (the second/final time), which perhaps is why no one on the A’s went to argue.

First-base coach Tye Waller had an incredible response, turning to the dugout and smiling as if to say, “What was that?” And A’s supervisor Bob Melvin stood on the top step, on the verge of claiming one thing, however by no means actually committing. The A’s have been in a scoring drought, so perhaps it could have behooved Melvin to lift a stink, just to see what happened next. However contemplating that Hirschbeck is an umpire that many of the teams appear to love and respect, he gave him he benefit of the doubt. And, oh, there was doubt to spare.

The Angels received three-0, they usually beat the A’s again Wednesday afternoon 3-1. That nudges the Pink Sox nearer to dwelling-discipline benefit all through the playoffs. However the heck with that. What about Hirschbeck starting a new train craze with his isometric SafeOut stretch?

Anthony Pettis calls out Jose Aldo minutes after winning lightweight title

(USA In the present day Sports activities Pictures)

Jose Aldo, Anthony Pettis has his eye on you.

Minutes after successful the UFC light-weight championship with a first-spherical armbar of Benson Henderson, Pettis had his next battle picked out. He needs featherweight champion Aldo.

“Joe Silva mentioned to make his job simpler. Jose Aldo, we’ve some unfinished enterprise. My belt or your belt?” Pettis said to the digicam at UFC 164 in Milwaukee.

The struggle isn’t out of the realm of possibility. Aldo was originally scheduled to battle Pettis at UFC 163, earlier this month. The UFC has floated the thought of matching up champions previously.

But Pettis isn’t the one one who has earned a shot at Aldo. Chad Mendes won with a knockout on Saturday night time. He lost to Aldo in January of 2012, but has earned four straight knockout wins since.

Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open: November Niner Ryan Riess Calls His Shot

Ryan Riess is a 23-year old professional poker player from East Lansing, Michigan. He also happens to be fifth in chips heading into the World Series of Poker Main Event final table, which is set to resume on Nov. 4 in the Penn & Teller Theater at the Rio Hotel All-Suit & Casino. The youngest of the November Nine was kind enough to sit down with PokerNews at the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open $10 Million Guarantee Championship Event to talk about life after making the final table, prepping for the big day, and more.

PokerNews: What have the last few weeks been like after becoming a member of the November Nine?

Riess: I’m just been relaxing a lot, and I’m getting into the swing of playing now. I hung with family and friends. Did a lot of interviews [laughs].

How have you coped with the media? Are you embracing the exposure?

It’s not really hard, but it takes a lot of time. Bernard Lee is waiting on an hour-long interview that he wanted to do today, but I didn’t have time. It takes a lot of time, but I embrace it. I enjoy it.

Do you like the concept of the November Nine, or would you have liked to finish it the next day?

Personally, I would’ve rather played right after we finished because I’m not going to do as much studying as others people are going to do. So I would rather them not have the chance to study considering I’m not going to do it that much. So I would’ve rather played it out at the time, but I also like it because it gives family and friends a chance to come out that would’ve never been able to see it otherwise. There’s (sic) pros and cons.

Both professionals and amateurs alike have had coaching during the break. It doesn’t sound like you are going to seek any?

Well, I have a couple of coaches. We haven’t done anything yet, but I think I’m going to run a couple of simulations with Loni [Harwood], [Bryan] Campanello, Jarod Ludemann, Jon Taylor, Phil [Hui], and Danny Illingsworth. We’re going to run a couple of simulations with a couple of other people, but I’m not going to do it as much as others because I’m traveling so much. I think it’s really big if I can run deep right now, it would be huge before the November Nine.

Yeah, it’s much better to be in the chair and deal with real ICM situations, right?

Exactly. I know [Mark] Newhouse is doing a full simulation with a whole bunch of people. Jay Farber has Ben Lamb and Chance Kornuth and a whole bunch of other people that he’s having coach him. I know that Jay Farber is going to be coached a lot. We’ll see, I guess.

At what point in the Main Event did you look around and come to the realization that you could win?

It probably wasn’t until Day 5 — five or six. I won a huge pot to take the chip lead with 58 left, and that’s when it really hit me. Before that I was obviously playing the tournament to win, but once I took the chip lead with 58 left, that’s when it kinda hit me. I don’t remember what day it was, but the cameras missed the pot. It was a big one [laughs].

"The title is everything. I would not be happy with second place."“The title is everything. I would not be happy with second place.”

When you guys redrew to the unofficial final table of 10, what was your reaction to your placement at the table?

I actually liked the table draw. I still do. A lot of media and other people have said that I don’t have a really good spot considering the big stacks are to my left, but I personally like it. Most of the hands I’m going to play, I’m going to be in position, because if I raise in late position the big stacks will have to play from out of position. Then Newhouse is to my right, which I don’t mind because he’s short stacked and if someone opens, he’s going to be three-bet ripping and I have a chance to wake up. So I really like my table draw.

Who is the toughest player among the remaining nine?

Marc McLaughlin. Hands down. The Canadian. He played really good and he had my number in a couple hands with three tables left. He got me in a couple big ones, but he played really well. He was really active and played really solid.

Did those hands go to showdown or are you waiting for the broadcast?

No, they both went to showdown and I lost them both. He four-flushed me twice [laughs]. The first time, he turned the flush and the fourth spade in the river was meaningless. I like how I played against him, but it was kind of unfortunate.

How much would the title of Main Event champion mean to you, or is the money more important?

The title means everything. The money’s great, but being a professional poker player money comes and goes. You can go on $100,000 downswings or upswings every month if you’re playing big enough.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”29″]

The title is everything. I would not be happy with second place.

What are you plans for after Florida?

I’m going to the Legends of Poker for the WPT, then I’m going to Puerto Rico for a couple of days to party, and then to Borgata for the WPT, and then to Europe for all of October.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I’m gonna win it. That’s about it.

A-Rod denies involvement in leaking Biogenesis information, calls Franciso Cervelli his brother

Francisco Cervelli and Alex Rodriguez throughout the 2010 postseason. (Getty Pictures) Speaking to the assembled media at Fenway Park prior to the Yankees-Pink Sox battle on Friday evening, Alex Rodriguez vehemently denied a “60 Minutes” report that he was concerned in leaking the names of Ryan Braun and teammate Francisco Cervelli to Yahoo! Sports in connection to the Biogenesis scandal.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”17″]

ESPN New York has a full transcript of A-Rod’s quick session, which he opened with statement and stuck around to reply six follow up questions. This is an excerpt, beginning with that brief statement:

Alex Rodriguez’s opening assertion in response to the report by “60 Minutes”:

“It is a robust state of affairs,” Rodriguez said. “It is not surprising. I think they reported this about four months ago and it did not get much traction. It’s bizarre, bizarre timing.”

Are you saying it’s not true?

“It is not true,” Rodriguez mentioned. “I spoke to [Francisco] Cervelli and had a positive dialog. He understands it is not true and we’re on the identical page.”

As normal, there’s nothing really shocking about A-Rod coming forth with a denial, but on this case he positively made a robust effort to assure everyone that he wouldn’t sink to ratting out a teammate.

“Once I heard about the story, it was very stunning to me,” Rodriguez said. “The most important thing is that I spoke to Cervelli. Cervelli is like my brother. He fully understands that it is not true.

When pressed additional, A-Rod drove dwelling the point that he and Cervelli are still on good phrases following the report.

“We had that conversation. He understands that it isn’t true. You already know, I’ve been a member of this union for 20 years, and it’s important for all the blokes to know that my loyalty is to this union and it would never occur, it could never happen and it did not occur. Let’s make one factor clear: For the subsequent seven weeks, it will be a really bumpy highway. Day by day anticipate a narrative like this, if not larger. After arbitration, I will have a chance with a full platform. Possibly a narrative with Wally [Matthews]. And I will inform my full story.”

I do not know how much of what A-Rod says is truth or fiction nowadays, but he is in all probability proper a couple of new story tarnishing his title popping out every day. It looks like every way he turns, someone has him of their cross hairs. But hey, that’s the bed he made for himself, he may as nicely get snug laying (or mendacity) in it

Brandon Phillips calls his $72.5 million contract a ‘slap in the face’

(Getty Images) Brandon Phillips, the Cincinnati Reds star second baseman, signed a six-year, $72.5 million contract with the team in 2012, a nice hunk of cash, no doubt.

But in a new interview with Cincinnati magazine — in which Phillips is given the title “the most entertaining player in baseball” — he reveals that to him the contract is a “slap in the face” compared to the 10-years, $225 million the Reds gave fellow star Joey Votto just five days earlier in 2012.

Here’s what Phillips said:

“I just feel like they didn’t have to sign Joey (Votto) to that contract (10-year, $225-million extension). He still had two more years on his. And for (the front office) to go out there and sign him before they sign me, and they knew I was going to be a free agent?” Phillips shakes his head. “I understand Joey’s a good player. He’s one of the best players in this game. But I feel like I am too. I told them that this is where I wanted to be. I begged them. I told everybody I want to finish my career here. And then they give someone a contract who didn’t ask for nothing?”

“To this day, I’m still hurt. Well, I don’t wanna say hurt. I’ll say scarred. I’m still scarred. It just sucks that it happened,” he says. “For (Castellini) to sign somebody for $200 million, there must be a new vegetable or fruit coming out that we don’t know about. For him to do something like that and tell me they didn’t have any more money, that’s a lie. But what can I do? I just feel like it was a slap in my face … But how can someone slap you in the face with all that money. It’s a nice slap in the face.”

A nice slap in the face? At least he admits that. There are a large number of Reds ticket-buyers to whom a million dollars, let alone $72 million, is not a slap in the face. In fact, some people will probably say calling that type of contract a slap in the face is the actual slap in the face.

Probably sensing this was a story that could easily be twisted into a feud and become a distraction, Votto responded with tact, saying Phillips’ reaction was “totally human,” then praised his teammate for being honest. This, from C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer:

“I haven’t read the article and I’d heard snippets of it, but from what I gathered, Brandon’s reaction was totally human. It’s a feeling I’ve felt before, it’s a feeling most people have felt before.

“Brandon’s a teammate I’ve played with six, seven years now and I love playing with him. I really have an immense amount of respect for him. Those comments have nothing to do with me. It doesn’t change a single thing, it makes me like him more, to be honest with you. Not many players are very honest, usually they give catch phrases, similar to what I’m doing right now. He’s a refreshing guy because he is honest and he does tell people how he feels. You can tell how he feels in that given moment and that’s a great thing. It’s great playing with someone like that. Variety is the spice of life and I love playing with Brandon.

“The smiles and the high-fives and everything we share on the field are genuine. That’s how we feel about each other. That’s how it’s going to be going forward. We play together for this city, we’re tied together because of our contracts, because of the uniform we wear and because of the championship we’re trying to seek out for Cincinnati. I know Brandon feels that way and I feel that way also. That’s really all that matters.”

There’s one reason why Joey Votto got that big contract, aside from his consistency and prowess at the plate: He understands how to (try to) put out a potential fire. Votto makes face-of-the-franchise money, and this shows why.

Phillips, on the other hand, sounded a bit defensive when asked by reporters Friday if he stood behind his comments from the Cincinnati Magazine interview. Again, from the Cincinnati Enquirer:

“What did I say wrong? Please tell me, what did I say wrong? I want to know what I said wrong. Please tell me. I want everyone to tell me exactly did I say that was so wrong?”

“I haven’t paid attention to what people are saying. When someone wants to do a story about you and they want to ask questions, that’s what it’s all about. It’s about people asking questions and you don’t back down from any questions and you tell them how you really feel. I don’t feel like I said anything wrong, I didn’t disrespect nobody, if I did, it’s someone in the front office. The thing is, they know what happened, so I don’t understand why everything’s a big deal. And fans, I didn’t say anything, I love this city, I love Cincinnati, I’m happy to be here, I’m happy with the contract that I got. I’m happy for Joey. I talked to Joey about it, Joey doesn’t really care about what they say. He understands. He respects what I said. I say things people other people won’t say, that’s the type of person I am. What I said. I didn’t say anything wrong. If I said something wrong, tell me what I said wrong.

“Do I feel like they lied to me? If someone tells me they don’t have no money and you find $200 million somewhere, what does that sound like? You tell me.”

So what have we learned today? Brandon Phillips is happy for Joey Votto. Votto likes Phillips more now. They’re both capable of far more than five-word answers to questions. And getting in slapped in the face with $72.5 million is nice. Thanks, guys.

Fernando Torres calls Tahiti ‘an example for other teams’ after Spain’s 10-0 win

Spain beat Tahiti 10-0 in their Confederations Cup group-stage match to set a new record for margin of victory in a FIFA senior tournament. Though a decisive win for Spain was an inevitability, part of the reason the score got to be that lopsided was the mostly amateur Tahitian players’ refusal to just sit back and defend against their supremely talented opponents. They tried to attack instead of parking the bus, as far better teams often do against Spain. They didn’t play scared (or pragmatically), they just played.

As a result, Fernando Torres led Spain with four goals in the game. That makes him the tournament’s top scorer, so it probably shouldn’t be a surprise that he appreciated the positive and porous nature of Tahiti’s play and declared them an example for other teams to follow. Because winning every match 10-0 really would be great for Spain.

From Reuters:

“They are the example for other teams,” Torres told reporters after accepting the Man-of-the-Match award for his four-goal haul.

“They tried to play football and although the result proved there is a massive difference between the teams, that was not the most important thing. The most important thing was it was sporting contest.

“All of us have become big fans of that team. We have all had our photos taken together – it was a joy to play in that match and not just because we won so easily, but because they were sporting and despite losing they played with a smile on their faces from the first kick to the last.”

Spain manager Vicente Del Bosque added to Torres’ sentiment by saying that Tahiti were “noble opponents” and that “it was humbling to play them.” Tahiti boss Eddy Etraeta, however, explained that he and his players were a bit more critical of their own performance. Because it’s easier to argue the nobility of a record thumping when you’re not the one getting thumped.

“Of course we were never going to win, but some of the goals we conceded were a bit naive and we could have done better,” Etaeta told reporters.

“But we have won a major victory here by winning the hearts of the Brazilian public.

“I think its fair to say we are better known in Brazil than we are in Tahiti.

Tahiti were undoubtedly had more support at the Maracana as the Brazilians resented both Spain’s possession heavy style of play and the success it’s brought them. But even if Tahiti aren’t praised at home, they’ve certainly won over a legion of fans — some patronizing, others genuine —around the world.

Fernando Torres, meanwhile, now has twice as many goals as Brazil’s Neymar in the Confederations Cup after playing half as many matches. And that’s even with Torres missing a penalty in the second half against Tahiti. Clearly this is all the sample size necessary to see that he’s worth far more than Barcelona’s €57 million signing.
