Dodgers celebrate NL West title in the Chase Field pool, get called ‘classless’ by Diamondbacks player

The Arizona Diamondbacks requested the Los Angeles Dodgers to not celebrate successful the NL West on their discipline. So the Dodgers, after beating the D-backs 7-6 on Thursday for his or her first division title since 2009, went elsewhere to rejoice. The pool at Chase Subject.

A pack of Dodgers — Matt Kemp, Hanley Ramirez, Yasiel Puig, Juan Uribe, Scott Schumaker, Adrian Gonzalez, Kenley Jansen and Michael Young, amongst them — dashed out to the pool after the win, splashing around like Little Leaguers after a pizza get together.

These two teams, in fact, have history. You possibly can ensure that brawl from June hasn’t been forgotten by either membership. And this little jaunt to the pool? How will it go over? Kirk Gibson didn’t come out with a pool noodle and a water gun to join the enjoyable, if that is what you’re questioning.

In reality, it appears like D-backs gamers, followers and even the native media weren’t too glad about how the Dodgers determined to have a good time.

D-backs pitcher Brandon McCarthy, nevertheless, put this spin on the Dodgers celebration.

The swimming Dodgers, meanwhile, didn’t appear to be they have been caring at all about what folks would think. Is that Yasiel Puig below about to fall face-first into the water? He does not appear too apprehensive about hurting himself, not to mention hurting anyone in Phoenix’s emotions.

Dodgers clinch NL West, complete worst-to-first turnaround

(Getty Pictures)

Much just like the season of the 2013 Los Angeles Dodgers, their NL West-clinching victory on Thursday required them to claw back. But these Dodgers are nothing if not resilient, a high quality they’ve shown in their worst-to-first turnaround, they usually beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6.

It is the Dodgers’ first NL West crown since 2009, they usually’re the first group this season to clinch a playoff spot. Not unhealthy for a staff that was in last place in June.

Hanley Ramirez, in the lineup for less than the second time within the last seven days, put the Dodgers forward 3-zero with a three-run homer within the third inning, then the Diamondbacks roared back with a six-run third inning off Dodgers starter Ricky Nolasco. The Dodgers — particularly Ramirez — wouldn’t be denied and crept back. Ramirez hit another homer within the seventh to tie the game at 6, a part of his 4-for-5, four RBI day.

Then, within the eighth inning, Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis had the clutch hit of the day, sending a Josh Collmenter pitch into the left field stands for the go-forward homer. The Dodgers’ bullpen did the rest as Brian Wilson and Kenley Jansen set the D-backs down in order in eighth and ninth, respectively.

The win completes a surprising about-face for the Dodgers, the crew with the $239 million opening day payroll, that tanked at season’s begin. Let us not overlook that the Dodgers spent the whole month of June in last place within the NL West. At their worst, they had been 12 games under500, 30-forty two and 9 half video games again from first place. That was June 21.

At the beginning of the July, the Dodgers started a hot streak that will be the thing of legend in L.A. for years to come back. They went 19-6 in July, then 23-6 in August. With their victory Thursday, the Dodgers (88-65) have managed to go fifty eight-23 since their most dismal point.

While we wait to see how far these Dodgers can go, having now remodeled themselves into World Collection favorites, their last-to-first comeback by itself stands as some of the memorable tales of the 2013 baseball season.

Rockies infielder Ryan Wheeler shows off beatboxing skills

Not everybody agrees with MLB allowing expanded rosters in September. I for one can understand that viewpoint, however would truly side extra with the “restrict it to 3-5 further gamers, lower than 15” crowd. That’s a debate we can have later on, but something that may’t be debated is that many of those that get the September name are fascinating characters — a few of whom are getting their one and only likelihood to prove they belong — with attention-grabbing stories and talents that we may have never discovered.

For instance, present Colorado Rockies infielder Ryan Wheeler is a guy who has made a couple quick cameo appearances over the past two seasons with each Colorado and the Arizona Diamondbacks — he was traded in the course of the offseason for left-handed reliever Matt Reynolds — when his teams have needed depth, however has by no means stayed lengthy sufficient for us to get to know him. Now that he’s here again and staying for at least the rest of the season, we are able to a while for a little research on Wheeler, and a little research turned up this tidbit.

Ryan Wheeler is one large human beat box.

Check out his abilities from this Youtube video he posted last 12 months.

I’m anything however a beatboxing skilled — whistling did not even come simple to me — nevertheless it seems Wheeler is pretty versatile and might cover a number of floor together with his beats. Even the burp at 2:06 did not appear misplaced.

It’s a really impressive exhibition, which is nice information for Wheeler if he struggles protecting floor on the corner infield positions and continues hitting230 within the huge leagues. It’s all the time good to have one thing to fall again on if the baseball gig falls through, but here is hoping Wheeler gets more than a limited probability to succeed in Colorado or elsewhere.

He looks as if he’d be a fun man to have around the clubhouse, too.

MLB releases 2014 schedule with Dodgers and Diamondbacks opening in Australia

Crikey, is this real about Major League Cricket Baseball opening the 2014 season Down Beneath in Australia? Yep, it is truthful dinkum, mate. MLB released the ’14 schedule Tuesday and, as reported in June, the Los Angeles Dodgers will play the Arizona Diamondbacks at the Sydney Cricket Floor on March 22 and 23. These would be the first regular season games ever performed within the Southern Hemisphere, which means the MLB season will open and shut within the fall.

The Ground looks like a stunning facility, based mostly on the picture above.

MLB has opened the season exterior of the U.S. and Canada six other occasions, most recently in Japan in 2012. The one difference this time: You know that Paul Hogan is going.

Other schedule tidbits:

The first Sunday night time sport of the yr will likely be March 30 (groups to be announced), with 14 different opening-day match-ups taking place a day later.

The All-Star game in Minneapolis is July 15.

Jackie Robinson Day (the primary one without Mariano Rivera) is April 15.

The season closes Sept. 28.

Near perfection: Eric Chavez breaks up Yusmeiro Petit’s perfect game with two outs in ninth

Recalled on Aug. 23 to exchange an injured Matt Cain, who pitched the 22nd excellent sport in Major League Baseball historical past on June 13, 2012, Yusmeiro Petit fell one out wanting changing into the twenty fourth pitcher to throw a perfect recreation within the San Francisco Giants 3-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday evening.

All that stood between Petit and perfection was 35-yr-outdated veteran Eric Chavez. The rely went full — though Petit’s 2-2 pitch was close enough that it drew a response from every of the forty one,180 in attendance at AT&T Park. That solely added to the drama and nervousness. After which Chavez calmly flipped a ball into quick right subject that was simply out of the reach of a diving Hunter Pence. Actually, the play was very much paying homage to Pence’s nice catch to preserve Tim Lincecum’s no-hitter on July 13, however there’s a bit more floor to cover at AT&T Park than Petco Park and Pence simply couldn’t quite get there.

Petit was that shut, literally inches from perfection. As a substitute, he becomes the 12th pitcher to lose an ideal sport with two outs in the ninth inning. The newest? Yu Darvish on April 2 against the Houston Astros, so at least Petit’s maintaining good firm on that quick listing.

(USA At present) A 28-year-outdated right-hander from Zulia, Venezuela, Petit was appearing in solely his 76th sport — 40th begin — over his six yr career. Friday night time represented his fourth begin for the Giants this season. He had been spectacular in his first three begins, permitting no more than two runs in each outing. However he was on one other level in opposition to Arizona. Dominant can be one word to describe Petit‘s performance, however what actually made it work was his effectivity. The Giants had but to permit Petit to surpass the one hundred pitch mark or go previous six innings coming in. On Friday, he needed solely 95 pitches to set 28 up and knock 27 down.

Not bad for a guy with a 12-20 report and a 5.37 career ERA coming in.

It was an sudden masterpiece, but a masterpiece nonetheless. From start to end, Petit had the D-Backs off balance and swinging with hope, not confidence. But even with that level of efficiency, a bit assist defensively is necessary. Petit was the beneficiary of two spectacular performs in his remarkable outing. The first came simply three batters into the sport when Nationwide League MVP candidate Paul Goldschmidt ripped a grounder deep into the outlet at shortstop. Joaquin Arias, playing rather than gold glove contender Brandon Crawford, made the exceptional again-handed stab and the lengthy throw throughout for the out.

Then with two males out within the sixth inning, the opposing pitcher, left-handed hitting Patrick Corbin, flared a ball into short left area that had base hit written all over it. But identical to Pence did for Lincecum in July, an outfielder would save the day. Only on this occasion, it was defensive substitute Juan Perez, who was enjoying in solely his 19th career recreation.

Another tidbit value mentioning in Petit’s near historic outing, he never went to the windup, which is the same old beginning setup for pitchers when there are not any runners on base. Petit threw solely from the stretch your entire recreation, and in need of one hiccup, it could not have worked out any higher.

Trades! Jason Kubel to Indians and John Axford to Cardinals

Axford’s mustache is legendary, while Kubel’s beard is conservative. (Getty)

Two trades had been accomplished Friday morning, beating the Sept. 1 deadline for playoff eligibility. The Cleveland Indians, hoping slugger Jason Kubel regains his power stroke in the season’s ultimate month, acquired him from the Arizona Diamondbacks. The St. Louis Cardinals wager on right-hander John Axford, buying the Milwaukee Brewers’ former nearer.

The D-backs will get a minor leaguer to be named. The Brewers anticipate likewise for Axford.

Kubel, who hit 30 home runs and 30 doubles a season ago with Arizona, has struggled with leg injuries and decreased taking part in time in 2013, reviews Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. Kubel, 31, batted220/.288/.324 with 5 homers in 267 plate appearances. He also had a string of above-average performances with the Twins from 2007-2011. He will put on No. 12 for the Indians, they report.

Axford saved one hundred and five video games from 2010 to 2012, however misplaced his job to Jim Henderson early this season and didn’t get it back when Henderson gave it up (for some time) to Francisco Rodriguez. Nonetheless, Axford put collectively a long streak of success in middle relief for the Brewers, compiling a 0.34 ERA with 25 strikeouts and eleven walks in 26 2/three innings from late May to late July. He has struggled since then. It’s all small sample sizes. Perhaps the Cardinals will get a nice closing push from him, like they did in earlier seasons from different late acquisitions by GM John Mozeliak. St Louis leads the NL Central by one game over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Brewers’ GM Doug Melvin mentioned a pleasant factor about Axford in a press release:

“John has been a big contributor to the Brewers, and we do not go to the playoffs in 2011 without his excellent efficiency. He and his spouse, Nicole, can even be missed as contributors to the Milwaukee community.”

Axford, with his award-successful Buffalo Invoice/handlebar mustache look and outgoing persona on Twitter and in person, was a fan favorite in Milwaukee. Of course, love might be fickle, and when Axford struggled, Twitter wasn’t as much enjoyable of a place to have interaction followers.

Kubel is quiet by comparison, however by all accounts a great man in the clubhouse, for what it is value. It would be price much more if he also hit some residence runs.

The Indians came into Friday 6 half of behind the Tigers in the AL Central and 4 video games back within the wild card race. But they’ve a650 OPS as a crew in August, and have lost several gamers to harm, most not too long ago Ryan Raburn. The Indians have used Jason Giambi, a participant with the same ability set to that of Kubel, as a left-handed hitting DH. However at age forty two, Giambi is batting185/.278/.383 with eight homers in 187 plate appearances. Kubel also could possibly be auditioning for a job in 2014.

In case you had been questioning, and this comes up every year, Main League Baseball groups still can make trades after Aug. 1, as long as the players concerned either go unclaimed on waivers or a deal is worked out with a team that does make a claim. And, by making these deals earlier than Sept. 1, Kubel and Axford are playoff-eligible for his or her new golf equipment.

Let’s speak baseball.

Mark Reynolds will start at second base for the Yankees on Wednesday night

Mark Reynolds turns a double play at second base on Tuesday. (USA At the moment)

Just once you thought the New York Yankees injury woes have been lastly calming down, Tuesday in Toronto night occurred.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”19″]

First, All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano was compelled to go away the game in the first inning after being struck on the hand by a J.A. Happ pitch. X-rays were negative, which allowed Yankees fans to breath a sigh of reduction, but his status will likely be up in the air for just a few days.

With Cano out, New York’s solely true backup infielder on the roster, Eduardo Nunez, entered the sport as his substitute. Nevertheless, within the ninth inning, he was additionally forced to leave the game after tweaking his right knee while working the bases. That left supervisor Joe Girardi with Mark Reynolds as his solely possibility to complete the sport at second base.
Sure, the identical Mark Reynolds who once committed 34 errors while taking part in third base for the Arizona Diamondbacks. And yes, the identical Mark Reynolds who has committed 19 errors in 235 career video games at first base.

Needless to say, Reynolds’ fielding would not pay his bills.

Sure, the Yankees had been able to get by simply superb in one inning on Tuesday — Reynolds’ third one inning look at second base in seven years. In truth, Reynolds helped flip a double play to shut out New York’s 7-1 victory. But there is not any doubt they have been hoping to avoid using Reynolds on the position for an entire game on Wednesday.

No such luck.

All I can actually add is this: When fans are wondering if Alfonso Soriano is still a chance to log time at second base, you realize you might have a conundrum of epic proportions.

Believe me, that would not be a good suggestion in any respect, but it seems the Yankees are another little tweak away from that possibility turning into a reality.

Bottom line, if there was ever a night for Hiroki Kuroda to reach double digit strikeouts for the first time this season and hold the pressure off his protection, that is positively it.

Dust storm in Phoenix engulfs Chase Field

Back in February, a freak snowstorm covered the Arizona Diamondbacks/Colorado Rockies spring coaching facility in Scottsdale, Ariz. with snow and hail. The place regarded like a elegant winter wonderland. It does snow in Phoenix, however hardly ever that much. Even with Al Gore’s Climate Change ™ occurring just as he stated it would, it was unnerving.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”19″]

What larger Phoenix really needs is an effective dust storm. That’s closer to normal, no? Nicely, they obtained one Monday and area photographers caught it as the haboob — because it’s called — approached Chase Subject downtown. The Diamondbacks and Padres had been safely inside the baseball stadium, which incorporates a retractable roof for events identical to this. And for those 110-diploma days.

Beautiful, however there is no method the game might have played by way of such a dusting. All hail the domed stadium! The D-backs beat the Padres 6-1 behind proper-hander Brandon McCarthy and slugger Paul Goldschmidt.

This is a view simply outside of the stadium. It appears to be like like a dust assault.

Eerie shot of downtown from Chase Subject, with not much light getting by means of.

Soriano continued his rampage in Wednesday’s 11-3 victory with a grand slam to straight away heart field off Jered Weaver in the first inning. One inning later, he doubled in two extra to push their result in 8-zero. In the fifth, the Angels have been still pitching to him — likely because he was leading off — so he homered but once more. Then in his fourth plate appearance the Angels lastly pitched round him a bit, though Soriano deserved credit score for laying off a pair sliders that he typically flails at. He is positively in a great place proper now, both mentally and physically.

“Right here, it is like extra motivation,” defined Soriano, who returned to the Yankees in a July 26 trade with the Cubs. “All of the players, they need to win. If you put the Yankees uniform on, you realize what it’s all about. It is all about wins. That is all I take to the game each night.”

The only change in the prime five is the Dodgers, whose crimson-scorching July moved them to 7/1 odds, now being invited to the get together. They had been 22/1 on July 1.

A few other issues:

This is why “Are the Pirates for real?” continues to be a question folks ask.

• The Reds, who’re in third place within the NL Central however nonetheless one of the most dangerous teams in baseball, are holding regular at 14/1. Seems like there’s some value there.

Diamondbacks send Ian Kennedy to Padres for bullpen help

(Getty Photos)

The Arizona Diamondbacks wanted to unload beginning pitcher Ian Kennedy and they did so, transport him to the division-rival San Diego Padres. It was the first swap of the busy two-hour window before MLB’s commerce deadline.

Kennedy — who was 21-four with a 2.88 PERIOD in 2011 — has been a disappointment in Arizona this season with a 5.23 PERIOD and a 3-eight report. A surplus of starters in Arizona (not a nasty problem to have) made Kennedy expendable for the D-backs.

The Padres are giving Arizona some bullpen assist and a compensatory-spherical draft choose — probably the most assist-us-now player being lefty setup man Joe Thatcher (3-1, 2.10 ERA). The other player going to Arizona is relief pitcher Matt Stites, who is currently in Double-A. All these details confirmed by Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan.

The commerce has a few fascinating factors:

• Ian Kennedy is under workforce control by way of 2015. That makes him interesting to the Padres, who aren’t precisely in a win-now position and could use starting pitching. Kennedy could enjoy pitcher-friendly Petco Park too.

• The D-backs will need to have actually wanted to maneuver Kennedy if they sent him to a division rival, particularly one for whom he may play for a pair more years.

• Kennedy, who was on the heart of the D-backs-Dodgers brawl earlier this season, joins another batch of players who’ve put up their dukes towards the Dodgers this year. Suppose he and new teammate Carlos Quentin will evaluate notes on Zack Greinke?

Jake Peavy headed to Boston Red Sox in three-team trade involving Detroit Tigers

(USA Right this moment) Maybe the most important chip on the trade market, Jake Peavy is headed to Boston Crimson Sox as part of a 3-group deal involving the Detroit Tigers. CBS Sports activities Jon Heyman was the primary to report a deal was in place between Chicago and Boston. A number of reviews, including one from WEEI, rapidly identified the rumored third crew to be the Detroit Tigers.

To fill in the particulars of the deal, along with Peavy the Pink Sox will obtain reliever Brayan Villarreal from Detroit. The Tigers will receive shortstop Jose Iglesias, who would step in for the quickly to be suspended Jhonny Peralta, from Boston. The White Sox will receive highly regarded outfield prospect Avisail Garcia from their divsion rivals and three lower-degree prospects — pitchers Francelis Montas and Jeffery Wendelken, and infielder Cleuluis Rondon — from Boston.

It’s a really interesting commerce that appeared to develop shortly late on Tuesday night. The White Sox wisely scratched Peavy from his scheduled begin in opposition to the Cleveland Indians in case a deal would fall into place. In response to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick, a three-team deal was the truth is materializing with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Angels earlier within the day. That report appeared to have numerous momentum, too, contemplating the D-Backs had been being considered as probably the most aggressive suitor for Peavy, nevertheless it was additionally recognized Arizona would have to rearrange some furnishings and create wage relief by dealing starter Ian Kennedy or outfielder Jason Kubel to make it work.

The potential three-means deal would have included the Angels acquiring Kennedy to help up that money and the White Sox receiving multiple prospects from both teams, but they obviously discovered a greater match for their wants with Boston and Detroit.

As for the Crimson Sox, the deal is straightforward. They wanted so as to add depth to their starting rotation with Clay Buchholz’s status nonetheless up within the air. According to Heyman, they had been also in strong on Cliff Lee all day Tuesday, so they have been determined to fill the necessity. How a lot Peavy ultimately helps is yet to be decided. He is a seemingly fixed damage concern — just lately returned from a damaged rib — and has allowed 14 home runs in considerably limited time this season. That stated, he has huge sport expertise, and now has a bit extra motivation by getting into directly right into a vital race within the American League East.

All things considered, it appears to be a properly thought out deal for all three groups involved. Whether or not or not we’re saying that six months or a 12 months from now could be anybody’s guess, (trace: we most likely won’t) however for now it appears like a potential win-win-win.

Diamondbacks’ Matt Davidson named MVP of Futures Game after homering

NEW YORK — If you hit a home run at a Major League Baseball stadium, it’s kind of like pulling a fire alarm on a starship. Sirens go off, lights blare, pyrotechnics explode and people scream. And, at Citi Field, a giant apple is activated.

Not that Matt Davidson of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization noticed. When he went deep for a two-run homer Sunday at the MLB Futures Game, Davidson slipped into his own little world, like he usually does.

“I’ve actually hit a couple of home runs this year and stopped at second base,” Davidson said. “I’m not really good at pimping them.”

Davidson kept going this time, eventually realizing what he had done, and started to enjoy it by the time he got to third base — even if he missed the apple lighting up.

“I didn’t actually see it,” Davidson said. “I was trying to put it all together — like, ‘What is going on here?’ — and I couldn’t help but smile coming around third.”

Davidson had it together enough to be named MVP of the annual top-prospect game, which the U.S. won 4-2, beating the World team.

“It makes you want to work harder and play in a stadium like this,” said Davidson, who plays at Class AAA Reno. “The ball looks a little bigger here. Today it did. Sometimes it probably won’t.”

Davidson’s batting helmet and gloves are being donated to the Hall of Fame in Coopertown, which wanted his bat too, but he wanted to keep it for the home run derby in Reno on Monday for the Triple-A All-Star Game.

No matter where Davidson is playing ball, he usually runs hard after he hits the ball unless he’s positive that he “got all of it.”

“I’m slow, so my first thought is, I’ve got to get to second base, at least,” said Davidson, who ripped a hanging changeup from Oakland Athletics right-hander Michael Ynoa to left-center, giving the U.S. a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

“A changeup ran into my barrel. Luckily I use a longer bat so it hit the end of it,” Davidson added.

So he’s prudent on the basepaths and humble in the postgame interviews. Sounds like a guy who is wise beyond his 22 years. Davidson also seems older because of his major league hair/beard combination. There’s nothing about Davidson’s hair and beard that needs more seasoning in the minors. It’s major league ready now:

Davidson grew up in Yucaipa, Calif. and played on the same high school team as Taijuan Walker, a Futures teammate who pitches for the Mariners organization. Walker (presumably but obviously) colors his hair blond. Davidson swears he was born with white blond hair, and what’s on top of his head today is a remnant of it.

“A lot of people think I dye it because it’s a different color than the rest of my head,” Davidson said. “But no, I don’t. It’s super-thick and it’s tough and it kind of goes everywhere. I’ve been asked about it a lot while I’ve been on the East Coast.

“Honestly, that’s how it is, man.”

Hey, don’t apologize, bud. It’s great hair. Better than any of the other prospects in the room. But what about the beard?

“I started shaving when I was, like, 14. It was crazy,” Davidson said. “My dad taught me how to shave and I had more facial hair than all of the seniors. I remember Coach [Jeff] Stout making me shave. I had to be clean-shaven in high school to be on the team. And they say, the more you shave it, the faster it grows back.”

Davidson is batting291/.354/.500 with 14 homers and 24 doubles for Reno. Someday soon, he’ll get a major league shot with the D-backs. Much about him — not the least of which is Davidson’s hair — is ready.

Minnesota Twins are the new AL Glass Joes after getting swept by New York Yankees

(Getty Images, BLS Illustration)

The New York Yankees have swept themselves free of The Stew’s “Glass Joe Title,” handing it off to the Twins after winning four in a row in Minnesota.

The Yankees, who had a really tough June, had held The Stew’s “Glass Joe Title” longer than any team since we invented these silly things a month ago. The “Glass Joe Title,” if you haven’t been following along, is a (dis)honor badge passed around after a series loss. The Yankees had held it since June 16. By sweeping the Twins, the Yankees not only broke free of Glass Joe status but put together a nice little winning streak to raise their record to 46-39.

Want to know more about this “Glass Joe Title?” Here’s an FAQ:

• It’s adapted from Eye On Baseball’s Heavyweight Championship Belt. Only the opposite. It’s for losers.

• It’s named after Glass Joe, a 1-99 boxer from the “Punch-Out” video game series.

• The Glass Joe Title is like a hot potato that no team wants to be left holding. If the current Glass Joe beats another team in a series — no ties, only a legit series win — they are free from Glass Joe-ness. It doesn’t need to be a sweep either. Just a series win.

• There are two Glass Joes, one in each league. It’s our hope that one day, through the wonders of interleague play, the “Glass Joe Title” can be unified. The Angels and Mets were the first Glass Joes after losing series to the Astros and Marlins, respectively.

• It’s for fun. Don’t get so bent out of shape.

The Twins now play three games against the Toronto Blue Jays with a chance to send the AL Glass Joe Title to Canada. Meanwhile, our NL Glass Joes, the Arizona Diamondbacks, keep their title after splitting a series with the Mets. The D-backs now play three against the Colorado Rockies in what looks like a good chance to offload their Glass Joe status.

The Juice: Tigers, Pirates and Dodgers lead a day of exciting finishes

The Juice returns for season No. 6! It’s almost eligible for free-agency! Stop by daily for news from the action, along with great photos, stats, video highlights and more.

Sunday’s slate of baseball games gave us a handful of exciting finishes — walk-offs, heroic homers, come-from-behind rallies and, of course, a little bit of bickering.

Here’s a closer look:

Controversial Win of the Day: The Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox 7-5, scoring three runs in the eighth inning to bust open a 4-4 game. But that’s not the controversial part. It’s the play above — Daniel Nava dropping a fly ball in the eighth on what looked like the exchange from his glove to his throwing hand. The umpires ruled it a dropped ball. Nava and manager John Farrell argued, with Farrell eventually getting ejected and the umps not changing their mind. That helped Detroit put up their three runs and eventually get the win.

Had the umpires ruled Nava dropped the ball on the exchange, it would have been an out. That wouldn’t necessarily have stopped the Tigers rally, but it couldn’t have helped it.

Wild Finish of the Day: The Pittsburgh Pirates were down 6-3 to the Los Angeles Angels going into the ninth inning. That’s when things got wild. The Pirates rallied for three runs to tie the game against Angels closer Ernesto Frieri, who isn’t Jose Valverde, so this kinda thing isn’t an everyday possibility. Once the game went into extra innings, the Pirates put up another four runs, including a two-run single by Travis Snider, to make the score 10-6.

After giving up seven runs in the ninth and tenth, you’d think the Angels could be deflated. Actually, they rallied for three runs of their own in the bottom of the tenth. The score was 10-9, with two outs and runners at second and third when Mike Trout came up for the Angels. When it looked like the score might swing again, Trout stuck out to end the game.

Walk-Off of the Day: Kendrys Morales played the hero role in Seattle, hitting a three-run walk-off homer in the tenth inning to give the Mariners a 6-3 win over the Oakland Athletics.

(Getty Images) Back-to-Back Heroes of the Day: Tied 1-1 in the ninth, the Los Angeles Dodgers got back-to-back homers from Adrian Gonzalez and Hanley Ramirez to earn a 3-1 win over the Padres.

(Getty Images) Blue Jays 13, Orioles 5: The Jays win their 11th in a row, as Edwin Encarnacion, J.P. Arencibia and Jose Bautista have big days.

Rangers 2, Cardinals 1: Sunday Night Baseball turns into Monday Morning Baseball after a three-hour rain delay. When it clears up, the Rangers finish a three-game sweep of the Cards.

Reds 4, Diamondbacks 2: On “Star Wars” day in Arizona, Mat Latos plays the role of Sith — striking out 13 and surrendering just one run for the Reds.

(USA Today) Marlins 7, Giants 2: The Marlins get two homers from Justin Ruggiano to take three of four games from the Giants.

Rockies 7, Nationals 6: Rockies hold off a four-run, eighth-inning rally by the Nats.

Mets 8, Phillies 0: Matt Harvey dominates again: six innings, two hits and six strikeouts.

Cubs 14, Astros 6: Ryan Sweeney has six RBIs for the Cubs against the Astros, which is like four RBIs against a regular team.

Rays 3, Yankees 1: James Loney’s two-run single in the seventh inning gives Rays the win.

Royals 7, White Sox 6: The Royals scrap together three runs in the eighth for a come-from-behind win.

Braves 7, Brewers 4: Braves break a 24-inning scoreless streak, then decide seven runs sounds good.

Twins 5, Indians 3: Thank you and goodbye. Pedro Hernandez, called up from Triple-A to make an emergency start, helps the Twins avoid a sweep, then gets sent back down to the minors.

”I’m a big chips and salsa man, and there was some excellent chips and salsa. I wanted to talk to Jake [McGee] and Joel [Peralta]. So I got a little bucket of salsa, a little bucket of chips and I sat down with both of them. It was a good moment to just exchange thoughts, and I wanted them to know how much I believe in them, because that was a tough game for those guys.”

— Rays manager Joe Maddon, about a pre-game chat with two of his relief pitchers who had a tough day on Saturday and did much better on Sunday in Tampa Bay’s 3-1 win.

Things obviously aren’t going well for MLB umpires if they’ve resorted to Storm Trooper bodyguards. Just kidding — this is from “Star Wars” day at the Arizona Diamondbacks game.

• Michael Cuddyer of the Rockies extended his hitting streak to 21 games, the longest in baseball this year.

• In their last 10 games the Miami Marlins are 6-4 — against tough opponents: The Giants, Cardinals and Diamondbacks. (via Clark Spencer).

• Angels closer Ernesto Frieri had retired 22 straight batters going into Sunday’s game. Then he blew a save, giving up three runs in 2/3 innings to the Pirates in the ninth inning.

Baseball is back. Don’t miss anything.
