Angels lock up Trout for 6 years, $144.5M

L. A. – Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels agreed Friday night to a $one hundred forty four.5 million, six-yr contract, protecting baseball's brightest younger star beneath membership control through 2020.

The Angels mentioned the 22-yr-previous, two-time All-Star and his household shall be at a information convention Saturday in Anaheim to formally announce the contract along with owner Arte Moreno, supervisor Mike Scioscia and general supervisor Jerry Dipoto.

Few gamers in main league history have approached Trout's accomplishments in his first two full main league seasons. The speedy outfielder is a 5-software player and one of the darlings of baseball's sabermetrics crowd, known for putting up old style highlights and statistical superlatives on a regular basis.

"I feel all people is obviously thrilled that it got finished," Scioscia mentioned Friday night time at Dodger Stadium after the Angels' exhibition sport, which Trout missed with a abdomen virus. "He's a special participant and a particular individual."

The Millville, N.J., product was a unanimous selection for AL Rookie of the 12 months in 2012, and he completed second in AL MVP voting to Miguel Cabrera the past two years.

Mike Trout

The Angels agreed with star slugger Mike Trout on a $one hundred forty four.5 million, six-year contract extension.

Trout's deal came on the same day Cabrera finalized a $292 million, 10-12 months take care of the Detroit Tigers, the richest contract in American sports.

The free-spending Angels had been decided to reward Trout whereas locking up their prized possession past his first few years of eligibility for arbitration and free company. Los Angeles has been quietly negotiating with Trout's representatives all through spring training, and the club closed the deal three days before Opening Day at Angel Stadium.

Trout agreed on Feb. 26 to a $1 million, one-12 months contract for 2014, far more than the Angels have been required to supply him. His new deal runs from 2015-20.

The outfielder would have been eligible for arbitration for the primary time after this season, and without spending a dime agency following the 2017 World Sequence. Now, he cannot turn out to be a free agent until no less than age 29.

It is the latest massive-cash deal for the Angels, who are getting into the third season of a $240 million, 10-year contract with first baseman Albert Pujols, the second season of a $a hundred twenty five million, five-12 months settlement with outfielder Josh Hamilton and the third season of an $eighty five million, five-12 months contract with pitcher Jered Weaver.

But whereas the Angels' offers for Pujols and Hamilton have been criticized for their lavish nature and the 30-one thing sluggers' ensuing lack of manufacturing, Los Angeles is locking up Trout early in an uncommonly promising career.

Trout's contract is not worth as a lot as Cabrera's deal in Detroit, however it nonetheless would allow Trout to hit free agency at an age when he might be within the prime of his career.

And when his new deal ends, Trout will nonetheless be younger than the 30-yr-previous Cabrera is now.

Trout's average wage of $24,083,333 under the brand new deal is ninth in the majors, trailing only those of Clayton Kershaw, Cabrera, Alex Rodriguez, Justin Verlander, Ryan Howard, Hamilton, Felix Hernandez and Zack Greinke.

Trout is batting314 with 62 homers and 196 RBIs in just 336 profession video games, including 40 games in 2011. He additionally has stolen 86 bases while playing stellar protection and making two All-Star teams, starting for the AL last summer.

He's one in all 4 players in baseball history to bat320 with 50 homers and 200 runs in his first two full seasons, becoming a member of Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams and Pujols.

Trout has achieved nearly all the pieces besides group success during his quick major league career. The Angels have missed the playoffs in four consecutive seasons, and they finished seventy eight-eighty four final yr, their worst record in a decade.

The deal offers huge security for Trout. He obtained a bonus of $1,215,000 when he signed after the Angels selected him with the twenty fifth general choose within the 2009 newbie draft. He made $482,500 two years in the past and earned a $10,000 bonus for successful the rookie award, then was unilaterally renewed by the Angels last 12 months at $510,000 – $20,000 above the large league minimal on the time.

That deal sparked criticism from many Angels fans who thought Trout deserved more compensation for his outstanding play. They also nervous the relatively meager deal – and the Angels' resolution to maneuver Trout from his preferred middle subject to left final season – may bitter the budding famous person on the group.

Trout is again in middle discipline this season, and Moreno made certain Trout couldn't doubt the Angels' monetary dedication to him.

Cardinals trade Freese for Angels’ Bourjos

Angels Get Freese In Deal With Cards

The St. Louis Cardinals have sent third baseman and former World Series MVP David Freese to the Los Angeles Angels for outfielder Peter Bourjos as part of a four-player trade, the teams confirmed Friday.

David Freese

Third baseman David Freese, who hit only nine home runs last season for the Cardinals, has been traded to the Los Angeles Angels.

In addition to Freese, the Angels will receive reliever Fernando Salas. The Cardinals will receive outfield prospect Randal Grichuk.

Freese, a hero in St. Louis' 2011 World Series run, fell off markedly this past season. After hitting293 with 20 home runs and making the National League All-Star team in 2012, he batted262 with nine homers in 2013.

Freese's OPS dropped from839 to721, and he hit only179 (10-for-56) in the playoffs. Freese fills the third-base void in Anaheim that was created when the Angels traded Alberto Callaspo to Oakland in July.

Even if Freese fails to regain his 2012 All-Star form, he still appears to be a significant upgrade at third base for the Angels. Manager Mike Scioscia used seven players at that position last season, with Callaspo, Chris Nelson, Luis Jimenez and Andrew Romine logging the bulk of the at-bats.

Overall, Angels third basemen ranked 27th in the majors with an aggregate637 OPS, and they hit only eight home runs. Only Miami, with a total of three homers, got less power out of the third-base spot.

Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto has made upgrading the pitching staff a prime focus of his offseason activity, and now he has about $4 million of added payroll. The Angels are hoping that Salas, who has 186 strikeouts in 192 1/3 big league innings, can help improve a bullpen that went 20-27 with a 4.12 ERA.

Bourjos, a superb defender in center field, is a strong candidate to take over the position from Jon Jay in St. Louis. With Freese gone, the Cardinals could slide Matt Carpenter to third base and play prospect Kolten Wong at second.

"We are excited to be adding the outfield defense and speed that Bourjos provides, and Grichuk is a top prospect who will be in the mix with some of our other top position players such as Oscar Taveras and Stephen Piscotty " Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. "We wish both David and Fernando the best and thank them for their contributions – especially the many memorable moments they provided during the 2011 championship season."

Grichuk was selected with the 24th overall pick by the Angels in the 2009 draft – one spot ahead of Mike Trout.

Torii Hunter and Albert Pujols nearly fought in Angels clubhouse last season

(USA Immediately) The turmoil surrounding the Los Angeles reached a new level on Friday when Fox Sports Jon Morosi reported that the crew was anticipated to interchange both manager Mike Scioscia or general manager Jerry Dipoto before the 2014 season. Morosi noted that philosophical differences have made it difficult for Scioscia and Dipoto to co-exist, and Angels possession realizes a change has to be made rapidly to get everybody again on the same web page.

[wp_admanager_pro_display_adzone id=”19″]

I do not assume anyone on the outside trying in would disagree with that assessment. Not after the Angels made another major splash in free company, only to comply with with a largely disappointing season that can once more find them lacking the postseason. However in response to a separate by CBS Sports Scott Miller, the cracks within the franchise haven’t simply existed between the front office and the supervisor’s office, they’ve also existed within the clubhouse. And at one level the tensions virtually boiled over into a bodily confrontation.

Citing a number of sources, Miller says a team meeting last August almost erupted into fisticuffs when Albert Pujols known as out Torii Hunter for a dugout altercation with pitcher C.J. Wilson the evening before. Hunter took exception to the feedback, particularly since he’d already buried the hatchet with Wilson privately, and reportedly lost his temper.

From CBS Sports:

In a glimpse into how fractured the Angels had grow to be, they might not even agree on a gathering format. Hawkins known as for a gamers-solely meeting. Pujols, insisting that supervisor Mike Scioscia and the coaches attend, wound up co-opting the assembly.

Pujols called out Weaver for exhibiting up a teammate the night time before. Then he turned his attention on Hunter, blaming him for the dugout altercation with Wilson.

What Pujols didn’t know at the time was that Wilson and Hunter already had made amends, with the pitcher apologizing to the outfielder for overstepping his bounds within the dugout immediately following the sport.

“Albert, you’d better get your info straight,” a seething Hunter instructed Pujols.

Pujols mentioned one thing back, and Hunter jumped him for being a bad teammate and pouting all season each time he didn’t get hits in a game, even in games the Angels gained … and now he was going to name others out?

“Shut up, Torii,” Pujols snapped.

It was then that Hunter, from across the clubhouse, lost it and charged Pujols. Hawkins and outfielder Vernon Wells had to restrain him.

Miller additionally referenced an incident in Minnesota the place Hunter punched teammate Justin Morneau when he felt like Morneau wasn’t receptive to his recommendation about being a greater teammate. The confrontation would find yourself serving as a bonding moment for the pair, which cemented Hunter’s position as a clubhouse chief. But it additionally illustrates that his anger typically gets the most effective of him. They may be a part of the reason the Angels told Hunter they didn’t have the money available to carry him throughout the offseason.

As for Pujols, it’s mentioned he needed no a part of the physical confrontation. Once cooler heads prevailed, there have been additional troubles between the two men. Actually, Hunter was quoted in Miller’s piece as saying the two stay buddies and have talked often this season. Nonetheless, it gives us a glimpse at how unstable the ambiance was within the Angels clubhouse last season, and factors to why new leadership on the top may be mandatory.

Felix Hernandez wears Angels memorial patch for Dr. Lewis Yocum

(Getty)

Los Angeles Angels players mourn the loss of team doctor Lewis Yocum, who died May 28, in part by wearing a patch on their uniforms that honors him. A circle shape stitched to the jersey, just above the heart, the patch is dark blue and says “Dr. Lewis Yocum 1947-2013″ and “LEW” in red Angels script.

And now Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners wears it too. He was the starting pitcher against the Angels on Thursday night at the Big A, but he also showed solidarity with the opposing team:

It’s getting a little dusty in here. Hernandez always has seemed to be one of those thoughtful superstars, often looking out for others. A benevolent King. It’s not just his dominance on the mound that makes Mariners fans love him, but it’s also his attitude and personality. This is yet another example. But he wasn’t just being chummy for the sake of it.

He also knew Yocum, having visited him recently in Los Angeles, just before Hernandez signed a rich contract extension with Seattle. Yocum, a protege of Frank Jobe who specializes in elbow and shoulder medicine, ensured that Hernandez’s right elbow was sound. No Tommy John surgery here! Sign your $175 million deal, Felix.

So his acquaintance with Yocum has something to do with Hernandez having the patch sewn to his Mariners road grays. But mostly, we can credit Felix with just being an empathetic person.

No other Mariners players appeared to be wearing the patch.

An aside: The Angels probably had to get special permission from Major League Baseball to wear the Yocum patch. Usually/always, that’s how it works with uniform additions. But he was a team employee of theirs. He had no relationship to the Mariners in an official capacity. I wonder if King Felix will get a letter from the league telling him to remove the patch or risk a fine. Or maybe he asked for permission and got it — MLB’s not heartless, you know!

Another aside: You’d think they’d put the patch closer to a joint, given that Yocum was a renowned orthopedist. No matter, it’s still a classy tribute.
