Thomas Schaaf spent almost 40 years at Werder Bremen.Albion have been searching for a full-time successor to Steve Clarke, who was sacked in December, and have spoken to a long list of candidates. A move for Schaaf, 52 – who has never coached outside Bremen, where he spent almost 40 years as player, coach and manager – would represent a gamble for WBA chairman Jeremy Peace.
It would also involve some form of compensation, because although Schaaf left Bremen by mutual consent at the end of last season after 14 mainly successful years in charge, he remains under contract to the Bundesliga club.

Bremen have been paying him for the final year of that deal, which expires at the end of the season, and an agreement would need to be struck for him to be released from it.

Negotiations will also have to take place over his backroom staff. West Brom want to keep their existing structure in place, but Schaaf is believed to be keen to work with his former Bremen assistants Wolfgang Rolff and Matthias Hoenerbach.
